If you will email me directly at bfox@jasnetworks.net, I will scan this and send it to you. I would like to know your line of descent.
I believe the German Iden immigrant was

Johann Friederich Eiden
christened: 12 Apr 1653
Veldenz, Rheinland, Preußen, Germany
Died at sea: 12 Aug 1694.

His father was Hieronymous Eiden (all of this from Family Search.org).

He had a son Hieronymus, who coincidentally was born the same day as Randall Iden 17 Mar 1693/94 on shipboard. I got this from Quaker Church Records.

The Gilmore book takes it from there.

Barbara Fox (bfox@jasnetworks.net)

Brenda,

Your Thomas b. 1813 is not in "Sons and Daughters of Randall Iden". I have him in the 1850 census in Houston saying that he was born in Virginia. The Idens in the Gilmore book were originally "Eiden" and from Germany even though that is not what the book says. Gilmore had them from England but I believe he was wrong. If Thomas really was from Virginia he may also have been the son of Samuel and Rebecca (Russell) Iden who also lived and died in Virginia.

Barbara Fox
Richland, Michigan

I will go to the site for ancestry books. I ordered a book online for Calverts of Virginia and will do the same for the Iden's. I go to the genealogy library in Knoxville with others for research. That is where our registrar found the recorded marriage for Lizzie Iden and Stephen Hallmark in Houston Co., TX. My mother did tell me that Thomas Iden, she was told, ran away from his family in England, with a man servant. Several years later his brother came over to bring him back for inheritance. When the ship left Galveston harbor, he jumped overboard and swam back to shore. Some Iden's didn't hear that, but I saw on a message board a similar question about being straight from England. Your mentioning Galveston rang a bell.

Thank you
Brenda W. Holt
Tennessee

I will check my records and also Gilmore Iden's book. Have you checked this yet?
Generally speaking, The Iden's came from England to Bucks County, PA. From there migrated to the area of Leesburg, VA. From there they travelled to many other parts of the country with many going to Ohio. From there some went to many parts of the country, IN, IA, CA, TX and many parts in-between.
Bill Iden

He may have been the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Parkerson) Iden. But this is only a guess. Both Jacob and Elizabeth died relatively young and left several small children. Thomas would have been about 13. I have put him with this family but have no proof. I have that Thomas was born about 1813 in Virginia and died about 1887 in Galveston, TX.

Barbara Fox

My brother has picture of John Iden. It was labeled as Grandpa Iden (see attached). We thought that it was probably the father of Carrie Iden, our great grandmother.

Found 1880 Census in Kansas, Oak Township, Smith County with J. T. Iden and daugther name Carrie B.

Also, listed a Eliza Shurtz as a mother of John T. Iden. She may have been the mother of John T. or John's wife, Caroline. She may have also remarried or went back to using her maiden name later in life.

I don't have much information but I hope that it helps. I attached a portrait that I have. I also attached some pictures with the grave stone information in Greenleaf Cemetery.

I have a great grandmother that was named Carrie Iden. Could she have been one of the five daughters? She married Chris McCollom and lived in the Oklahoma City area.
I found a picture of her father which was labeled John Iden. Any information would be appreciated.

The mother was Nancy Rollins according to a biographical sketch in the "History of Logan County, Illinois" published 1886. I have done a lot of Iden research and I believe that Humphrey may have been the son of Samuel Iden and Rebecca Russell of Virginia. This is all circumstantial from searching the 1810 and 1820 census records. Samuel left no will that I have been able to find but I know that he is the son of John Iden the Rev. War soldier and his first wife whom I do not know. John married second Hannah Russell and came to Ohio.

I checked out some Greenleaf Sentinel newspapers from the Kansas Historical Society so that I could check out some of my relatives.
While reading the papers, I thought it would be a shame if I only copied down my relatives so I just kept typing on all of the obituaries that I found.
Your? relative was listed in the paper so I posted it in hopes that people would enjoy the information. This is all of the information that I have. Maybe the "attended the funeral" information will give you some hints . . . obviously he had a step-son.
Good Luck!!

Is this John T.Iden brother of James M.Iden, and sister Mary Jane Iden. Parent was Humphrey Iden. Do not know who the mother was. The John T. I have was born in 1855 in Ohio and married to Caroline Shurtz. I have that they had eight children, Laura I, Thomas, Eliza J. Carrie B. James R. Nettie, Mary, and John M. James M. was my g.g. grandparent. If this is him I would be interested in any information you have on them. Especially his parents and their parents.

Re: Thomas B. Iden

I have received a copy of Thomas Billingsley Iden's Confederate Pension and it states that T. B. Iden enlisted with Capt. D. A. Nunn in April 1865 and was discharged in June 1865 at Sabine Pass. He was never actually in the Battle of Sabine Pass which occurred in 1863. According to his brother M. F. Iden's sworn affidavit, Capt. D. A. Nunn's company camped on Dillard Creek near the Iden farm in Walker County,Texas for several days and nights. During that time T. B. Iden assisted the company with hauling wood and tending the horses and left with Capt. D. A. Nunn's Company on an army wagon and did not return until 2 months later after the war had ended with an army gun and caps.

There is also some dispute as to his actual age. His pension documents state he was born February 18th 1849. When he applied for a pension in October 1932, he stated his age was 82 years. His pension documents also state that he was 96 years of age 1946.

According to the Census Records Thomas B. Iden was not born until after 1950. He was not in the 1950 Census. In the 1860 Census he was listed as 6 years of age. In the 1870 Census he was listed as 18 years of age. In the 1880 Census he was listed as 22 years of age. And in the 1900 Census he was listed as 49 years of age.

According to his obituary he was 101 years old in 1950. There are some other contraditory statements made in his obituary that I would like to mention.

His father was Thomas Iden, and not Merrit Tarleton Iden. According to Census records as well as Texas Revolutionary Pension documents Thomas Iden and his wife Nancy Iden both received a pension from the State of Texas. Also, Thomas and Nancy Iden are found living in Walker County in the 1850 census. By 1860 Nancy Iden is a widow.

Texas Revolutionary Pension
http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/search/index.html

You can view the actual documents by clicking on the links below.

http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/222/22200188.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/222/22200189.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/222/22200190.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/222/22200191.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/222/22200192.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/222/22200193.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/222/22200194.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/222/22200195.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/252/25200390.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/252/25200391.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/50/05000192.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/50/05000193.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/50/05000194.pdf
http://tslarc.tsl.state.tx.us/repclaims/50/05000195.pdf

Also, I found the name Thomas Iden in a roster of volunteers that fought in the Texas Revolution.

http://www.mindspring.com/~dmaxey/l/ratcwd9l.htm
http://www.mindspring.com/~dmaxey/rep_ni01.htm

Ratcliff, W.D.
Company, San Augustine Volunteers
Apr 1, 1836 [A3; T1 p67-68]

Names on transcribed roll. Iden - "Young Tom" Iden - who joined up under Lieut Dick Dowling in the fall of 1862 and was among that small band of Confederates who repelled a Union invasion of Texas at Sabine Pass in September, 1863.

Mr. Iden died Monday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. W. Sheppard, 3921 Falls, with whom he had lived since 1945. The family was getting ready to celebrate the 103rd birthday of Harris County's last surviving "boy in gray" next month.

The Iden ancestors who settled in Virginia in 1712, came to Texas before it was a Republic. "Young Tom's" father, Merrit Tarleton Iden fought at San Jacinto and then had his commander in chief, Gen. Sam Houston, as a wedding guest.

Mr. Iden was born two years after Texas joined the Union. Father and son used to fight Indians and hunt together near the old family home in Huntsville.

After the war, Mr. Iden got through the Reconstruction years as a farmer in the Brazos Bottoms. Later, in the 1880's he had a mercantile business in Belton. He and his brother, the late M. F. Iden kept a farm in Lovelady until 10 years ago. In 1945, Mr. Iden moved to Houston to live with his daughter.

Two years ago, friends and relatives gathered for Mr. Iden's 100th birthday from all parts of the state. Mrs. Sheppard baked a cake inscribed in white icing to "Young Tom" his old Confederate Army nickname. Among those present were Mr. Iden's 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Sheppard recalled Tuesday that her father really enjoyed the party, although he had been in failing health in recent years. He had lost much of his eyesight and his memory was bad, she said.

He died quietly in his sleep Monday afternoon. Other survivors include another daughter, Mrs. J. A. Stanley of Crockett; a son H. A. Iden of Houston; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Antioch Baptist Church at Lovelady. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery.

Hi Lisa, I just found this on the web:

sheet of notes from bible, signed "Yours Truly E.V.I" (Ella V. Iden)
"Jacob Iden was born March the 15th 1804"
" Jacob Iden departed this life Jan 20th 1888 aged 83 years 10 months and 5 days"
"Jacob Iden was born in Loudeu County, Virginia" (sic)
"Jacob Idens own Brothers were John, Alfred, and Thomas and Lot. his half brothers were Jim ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~."
"Catherine Logau was his own sister. Ackey Tumbleson and Polly Parker his half sisters."

The names above should be Catherine Logan, Achsah Tomlinson, and Mary (Polly) Parker. Just as I suspected - there was no Isaac Iden as is written in the V. Gilmore Iden book.
