Hello,

The Guilford County, NC Starr brothers, as well as Casper/Gasper Starr of Rowan Co., NC are German Starrs.

Dear Vicki,

Thanks so much for all the new information. I had just about given up hope of getting back behind James L. Starr. It's been some time, but there is a rather large book on the Quaker Starrs - and I just couldn't seem to find them.

Is there any ships log showing their voyage here that you're aware of? Is anyone aware of the precise place in Germany from which they came?

It'll be interesting to see if there is any connection between the German and English Starrs. I presume the dna will show this.

Thanks for all the information you provided.

Sincerely,

Barb Starr

Don Claypool published a book on this Starr family early last summer -- "The German Starr/Stoehr/Stöhr Family". He gave all rights to the IGHS Library (Illiana Genealogical & Historical Society) in Danville, IL.

At this point, we don't know where in Germany the family came from. Research continues on this family.

Feel free to contact me via email.

Hi Barb,

Conventional research has identified several different Starr (multiple spellings) families -- English, Quaker, German, and Cherokee. DNA research clearly identifies these as different families:

Dear Vicki,

I see on the Starr DNA project a descendant of Casper Starr is one George W (Washington) Starr born in Indiana.

Do you know if their is any way to connect him to the ancestor Jacob Starr thought to be the ancestor of James Logan Starr, father of William Atlee Starr - or am I confused.

Thanks.

Barb

Hello Barb,

Based on DNA, we know that Casper Starr of Virginia and Rowan Co., NC is related to the Guilford Co., NC brothers (Adam, John and Jacob Starr).

We have theorized that (based on age and near associations) that Casper might be the uncle of the Guilford Co., NC brothers. However, we do not have paper proof as of yet.

We don't have a paper trail that proves that Jacob Starr of Lincoln Co., NC is the same as the Guilford Co., NC fellow of the same name. We can't prove that he isn't, either. We have not gotten a DNA test from a man that descends from Jacob yet, which should prove or disprove this theory.

cheers,
Vicki

Vicki,

I spent the day with my parents the other day, and have to appologize to you. My grandfather's name was James Freeland at birth, but he changed it later, here is the story: Before my ggrandmother gave birth, a Dr. Freeland told her if she would name the baby after him he would buy its first set of clothes, and my ggrandmother agreed to it. It seems the good Dr. never held up his end of the agreement, and when my grandfather could he changed his middle name to Freed. I found this amusing and thought I'd share it with you.

Hi Steve,

It's fun to actually know where some of these unusual names come from. That's quite an amusing story (both the name and the change)to have in your family lore.

Thanks for sharing.

Vicki,

I'm really getting confused. I thought that James Logan Starr was a descendant of Jacob Starr.
