Vicki,

I spent the day with my parents the other day, and have to appologize to you. My grandfather's name was James Freeland at birth, but he changed it later, here is the story: Before my ggrandmother gave birth, a Dr. Freeland told her if she would name the baby after him he would buy its first set of clothes, and my ggrandmother agreed to it. It seems the good Dr. never held up his end of the agreement, and when my grandfather could he changed his middle name to Freed. I found this amusing and thought I'd share it with you.

Hello Barb,

Based on DNA, we know that Casper Starr of Virginia and Rowan Co., NC is related to the Guilford Co., NC brothers (Adam, John and Jacob Starr).

We have theorized that (based on age and near associations) that Casper might be the uncle of the Guilford Co., NC brothers. However, we do not have paper proof as of yet.

We don't have a paper trail that proves that Jacob Starr of Lincoln Co., NC is the same as the Guilford Co., NC fellow of the same name. We can't prove that he isn't, either. We have not gotten a DNA test from a man that descends from Jacob yet, which should prove or disprove this theory.

cheers,
Vicki

Hi Barb,

Conventional research has identified several different Starr (multiple spellings) families -- English, Quaker, German, and Cherokee. DNA research clearly identifies these as different families:

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/s/starr/

cheers,
Vicki

Don Claypool published a book on this Starr family early last summer -- "The German Starr/Stoehr/Stöhr Family". He gave all rights to the IGHS Library (Illiana Genealogical & Historical Society) in Danville, IL.

At this point, we don't know where in Germany the family came from. Research continues on this family.

Feel free to contact me via email.

-vicki

Dear Vicki,

Thanks so much for all the new information. I had just about given up hope of getting back behind James L. Starr. It's been some time, but there is a rather large book on the Quaker Starrs - and I just couldn't seem to find them.

Is there any ships log showing their voyage here that you're aware of? Is anyone aware of the precise place in Germany from which they came?

It'll be interesting to see if there is any connection between the German and English Starrs. I presume the dna will show this.

Thanks for all the information you provided.

Sincerely,

Barb Starr

Hello Barb,

So, DNA studies don't prove specific relationships. However, the census records document the later relationships pretty well. Early relationships are documented by other records. Phillip Starr's relationship to his father Jacob in Lincoln County, NC is based on a land record. Phillip's relationship to his children is documented via a son's estate records.

The Guilford Co., NC Starr brothers (Adam, John and Jacob) are proven to be related to Casper Starr who came out of Virginia into Rowan Co, NC via DNA records.

It is believed that Jacob of Lincoln county is the same fellow as Jacob of Guilford Co. We have only recently located a male Starr descendent of Jacob willing to participate in the DNA study. Many of Jacobs descendents daughtered out.

-vicki

Vicki,

If I understand you correctly, the following is likely according to DNA study. Please verify that I am understanding this accurately.

James Logan Starr m. Florence Ikerd was the son of Cornelius Starr m. Miriam Litten was the son of Philip Starr m. Elizabeth Fry may have been the son of Jacob Starr b. abt. 1765 and living nearby in the 1810 census. This Jacob was probably a nephew of Casper/Jasper Starr according to the dna study. Is this the Casper Stoehr line out of the Palatine in Germany? Or is this from one of the English lines? Any additional information on this?

Thanks.

Barb Starr

This information is very much appreciated, as obviously for us it was a missing link.

Are you still a resident of Lawrence County. I would love to be able to keep in contact with you. Atlee had at least several sons and at least the ones I'm aware of are no longer living.

Is your name Sam Starr by chance?

Barb

Yes, James Logan Starr was married to Florence Ikerd. They had Five sons: Atlee, Norman, Roscoe, Fred, and My grandfather James Freed. My Father, James Freed,Jr. said Atlee moved to Indianapolis, the rest remained in Lawrence county. There were also two girls, one is Bess(Miller) the other I can't remember her name, but she married a Dalton.

I am trying to figure out if your James Logan Starr was married to Florence Ikerd? If so, do you know if James Logan Starr had a son named Atlee? Another website I saw indicated that James L. Starr m. Florence Ikerd had a son Atlee. I am trying to figure out if this is, in fact, the same lineage.

I am aware of my ex's father and grandfather, but haven't been able to get back any further.

Thanks.

Barb

James Logan Starr was my g-grandfather, his father was Cornelius who married Caroline Litton. There are Ikerds buried in the Leatherwood Cemetary, just east of Bedford. I realize your post is old and you may already have this info, if not I hope this helps.

Looking for maiden name of Arminta A. IKERD, 12 Oct 1879 - 24 Feb 1899, buried Jake Alone Cemetery, Dixie Community, Forrest Co., MS. I am pretty confident (but need further confirmation)that she was the first wife of Andrew J. IKERD, born about 1870 in MS, and the mother of the IKERD infant, born/died 17 Jan 1899 and also buried in the Jake Alone Cemetery. Andrew J. married second Cynthia Enola McInnis and this couple and three children were enumerated in the 1910 and 1920 censuses for Perry Co., MS. The information is needed for a Dixie community history. Many thanks.

Adam Ikerd d. Lincoln Co, NC by 1804 leaving minor children

Hello,

According to Lincoln Co, October Court 1804:

“Ordered by Court that Michael Cline, Benjamin Dorsey & Peter Little, Esquires be a committee to settle the estate of Adam Ikerd dec'd. & make report to the next County Court. Daniel Iker & Henry Iker being under age to choose a guardian, the Court appointed Michael Cline Esqr. Guardian who gave bond & Security Jesse Robinson in L100. Molly and Margaret Iker being under age to choose a guardian, the Court appointed Simon Horse Guardian who gave bond & Security Jacob Shoeford in the sum of L100.”

All four children would have to be under 14 years of age (e.g., born say 1791-1803).... This has to be a different fellow than the Adam who had brothers Martin and Simon who is still available to respond to the census taker in 1810. Anybody know more about Adam or what happened to his children (Daniel, Henry, Molly and Margaret)?

Thanks,
Vicki
Does anyone know where she connects? I found Hattie Ikerd in 1900 census in Rock Island Ward 7, Illinois, ED123, p. 19B. She is listed as daughter in the household of Smith Moore and Sarah Moore who is listed as a wife. This Sarah, I am presuming is Hattie's mother by another marriage. This Sarah was b. Feb 1856 in IN, both parents b. in IN. Hattie is listed as being born in IL on May 1876. There is also a Floyd Ikerd listed as a nephew b. Dec 1895. I know he is the son of Meredith Jackson Ikerd, but I am unable to locate a sibling of Meredith, who had a wife named Sarah and a daughter named Hattie. Can someone help me? Thank you.

I'm working on a website: www.ikardfamily.com. I have a lot more information that I've gathered since the "Family Tree" link was last loaded. I probably won't upload until next weekend, however.

Please feel free to get in touch with me. We can learn together!

Vicki,

I have seen a message which states that Florence Ikerd married James L. Starr. Florence is a descendant of Peter Ikerd. I found this on another website, which is no longer accessible. It stated Bedford, IN, I believe. I'm trying to figure out who this James L. Starr descends from. Have you any ideas?

Barb

Vicki,

I noticed that your surname is Hutchison. Would you have a Nellie Hutchiso B. 11/27/1886 in your Hutchison background? If so, is there a relationship to either/both the Starrs and the Ikerds?

Barb
