Located Franz's obituary at the Schdy Library and from there found his birthplace to be Burstadt which led to a GEDCOM discovery at http://www.genealogienetz.de/genealogy_de.html

Schenectady Ille

I'm stuck at Franz Ille (aka France or Frances Ely) b July 13, 1828 in Darmstadt d February 25 1905 in Schenectady.

Next steps include going to the Sch'dy Historical Society and contacting St. Joseph's Church in Sch'dy. But I don't think they have additional info, either.
