There is a book" Immel and Imel Families of America" by
Velma Byrum Keller. You can probably order thru your library
or check with a LDS library in your area.

The Immel/Imel brothers: Henry b 1756,Thomas 1757/8, Jacob
1760,Joseph b 1762 and Peter b 1764 were brought over as
Hessen soldiers during the Rev War. Keller said that the
brothers went awol shortly after arriving and then fought
fought for the
continental Army.
Peter was a drummer boy in General Morgan's VA Riflemen. The others probably were water boys and so forth.
Joseph(my line) and Henry lived close in Maryland and then moved to Fayette Co.,PA.

Thanks,

I had an 1820 death date, and this confirms that is likely a guesstimate based on what you have deducted from census records. It also listed the place of death as Wayne, Georgia which is also likely just a mistype for Indiana.

I had no solid borthdate, but I did have an (unverified) birthplace of Baltimore. I've deleted this from my records until I can find verification.

"None of the dates and places of her birth and death I've found seem accurate."

It would help to know what you've found, in order to substantiate or refute your findings.

Susannah was, according to the Evangelical Lutheran church marriage record of she and Peter Imel in 1787, the widow of a man named Pul. This may be the surname Poole which is prevalent in Frederick Co, MD at that time.

According to the 1810 census, the elder female in Peter Imel's household was no older than 44 yrs, and so if this is Susannah, she was born no earlier than 1766.

Neither she or Peter have been found in the 1830 census.

In the 1840 census of Wayne Co, Ind., youngest son James Imel has a male aged 70-79 in his household, the right age to be Peter. No female of that age group.

It has been assumed that Susannah died in Wayne county, between 1820 and 1840.

I'm also looking into this line, and I'm finding the discussion about whether or not Peter Imel was a Hessian soldier to be very illuminating.

My Imel line is this:

Peter Imel
Thomas Walter Imel
George H Imel
James Madison Imel
Lillie Imel
Ella Jordan
Hobert Jordan
me

I've never had any contact with this family at all, Lillie died in 1927, 50 years before I was born. So I don't have any kind of family history to fall back on.

Particularly I'm interested in Susanna Kirkwood, Peter Imel's wife. None of the dates and places of her birth and death I've found seem accurate. Any help in tracking her down is appreciated.

This is not that uncommon in families where there have been children born out of wedlock.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier. I don't check my email too often when I'm not online at ancestry.

I don't know a lot about the Scroggins family, but my husband's cousin Brenda Loupe has a web page on Ancestry and is a granddaughter of Clara Beever, the sister of my husband's father, Wm. Beever.

My memory is rather fuzzy on that part of my hubby's family--Clara lived in Oklahoma. For some reason, I have it in my head that Jack Scroggins and a brother were children of Clara's (out-of-wedlock) and when she married (forget her husband's name, but NOT Scroggins), the two Scroggins boys were raised by her parents (Lewis BEEVER & Lillie (Imel). The boys were in one of the Kansas censuses prior to 1930 living with their BEEVER grandparents. Hope that helps.

I think Brenda knows how to contact Jack Scroggins (if still living) but I seem to recall he wasn't too up on talking about all of this......

His wife's name was Clara Beever Scroggins Anson.

I see in your post that you alluded to the information that he and Clara were never married.
As a result of Xandervan's census find. I confirmed) that Lewis Edwin BEEVER's grandfather, John BEAVER was b. in W CANADA, then moved to Lyme, Jefferson Co., NY (1850-1860 Census); then Mason Co., IL (1870-1880 census). Son William BEAVER is found in those 1850-1870 censuses, but has moved to Walnut, Jewell Co, Kansas for 1880 Census - age 27, living with wife Emma age 19(STILTON) and sister Helen BEAVER (age 29). His wife Emma (STILTON) Beever died before 1900 and after the birth of Lewis Edwin BEEVER in KS. William BEAVER was found in the 1900 Census for the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma Territory, living with a new wife Mary, his son Lewis Edwin (now 18) and stepson Omer NIGHTINGALE and stepdaughter Clola HUGGINS (b. to Mary in 2 diff. states by 2 diff. men/husbands.

Have not yet been able to locate a 1910, 1920 or 1930 census for them, but am searching.

I am now going to re-examine the aforementioned English prison record -- assuming it is either John BEAVER's (b. W CAN) father or grandfather.

Have to see if timelines match. Also want to try and find an 1841 Canadian Census record with John BEAVER's parents.

In a file or box I have a photo of Andrew Jackson IMEL and Catherine Lucy HASKELL and my husband's grandmother Lillian IMEL is included in the photo with all her siblings. (The photo is torn across her hairline on the corner...have seen other copies where she has been edited out...same photo).

Note: according to a Scroggins desc., Clara Viola BEEVER-Anson never married the Scroggins father. The 2 Scroggins were in census records with their BEEVER-IMEL grandparents. Family never discussed the situation. Also, Ruth BEEVER-Richie was not married to MILLER, a full-blood Cherokee; her half-blood MILLER son was the result of an assault; I believe he was adopted by her husband, Byron RICHIE.

Xanderven
The 1860 federal census for Lyme, New York lists John Beaver, age 47, b. Canada; Mary, age 36, b. NY; children Ellen-13, William-10, Clarissa-7, Mary-5, and Lewis-2, all b. NY.

Your post is of interest to me, even tho it says John BEAVER (spelled with A) was b. Canada because I recently found a prison record in England showing a John BEEVER had been convicted 1st of larceny, then of breaking & entering (burglary) for which he was sentenced to 7 yrs. in prison; a notation was made "Transp" -- by which I inferred that he was transported to the colonies--or possibly Canada?

Since John, William, Lewis and "Clara" all appear in later generations in my husband's line, I am interested to see if any of this is part of the puzzle.

In my own line, my grandmother had a family history which omitted 2 generations of John and William's and caused me some confusion until I realized if they were pasted in, the lineage timelines worked perfectly.

Also, recently on my brickwall with my mom's paternal line, I found an 1875 Cass Co MO census which had similar names of siblings to those my great-grandfather chose to give his children, thus pointing to the high probability (incl. time/locale) that this was my next generation beyond my Civil War gr-grandfather.

In the case of this census, I'll have to do some checking. I have to see it on paper and check dates/locations, etc.

Will get back to you -- one way or t'other!!! This may be an important clue to get us across the pond. The John Beever who was transported after sentencing could have been sent to Canada. The fact that this 1860 Census for a John BEAVER shows he was 47 yrs. old means he was born about 1813 in Canada. Will have to see if this jives with the age/probably transport date for the John I found in England.
My William was born in NY -- and the 1860 NY Census record you found lists a son William b. NY. SO--this is a possibility.......

jshepherd_beever@yahoo.com
jbeever121 on Ancestry.com

Where do you live?

Hi Ronald. I am also an Imel, descended from Peter Imel. My grandmother was Margaret Imel (Clayton) from Shelbyville, Indiana. I have not been able to find any reliable sources that the family story of the 5 brothers coming from Germany and defecting to the American forces. It's been the "family story" for so long that it's hard to say where it's true or where it's legend. I cannot find any records prior to the marriage of Peter in Maryland. The brothers are not listed in the books listing the Hessian soldiers coming to America for the war. I'd love to see reliable records of any of the brothers. Although, I think there's some truth to the stories, for many reasons, there's some conflict also, since there is no record of the meticulously kept records the Hessians kept of who came and went during the war. I have my own personal theories, but no facts to back it up, so if anybody has any further reliable sources, I'd absolutely love to see it!

...ok so I finally figured it out...I was beginning to think this was going to be a big headache, seeing as though there are so many Imels...but alas, only six generations before reaching the German Lineage of Imel in Hesse Cassel, Germany...so far I haven't found anything of importance that these names may have contributed to in history...I plan on changing that in my own life, but if anyone else knows of anything, please let my sister and I know...here's what I've discovered so far...

Laura A Imell b 1976
Arthur W. Col in WWII...he had mentioned that his original last name spelling was Imel...but when he signed up in the Army, his last name was altered....he said he was very angry at this, but was never able to correct it...so since that day it's only been us four Arthurs and my older sister Laura, with the altered spelling, that we know of at least...

NY; Alzaida-8, David-7, Helen-3, William-7/12.

By 1870, the John Beaver family is living in Mason county, Illinois:

John, age 57, Mary, age 46, Helen-22, William-19, Mary-15, Alice-9, Jane-4. Lewis, who would be about age 12, is not listed and probably died between 1860-1870.

They are still in Mason county in 1880: John, age 67, b. Canada, parents b. England; Mary, age 56, father b. Mass., mother b. NY.

My family is on the side of the family who spells our name Emal. Find my reference on page 4-270. At one time I saw the Imel book. It looks much like the pages listed on this site. Is this a copy of the book? Indeed I’d love to again find a copy of it. If you have information that can lead me to a copy I'd be grateful. Reach me via eMail (for a year everyone called me email...doesn’t our family get royalties?). Please use russ@saber.net for contact

My family originates on the Emal side and I found the Imel Book to be a rich source of info, perhaps it will be for you too if you've not seen it. I see on page 23 a Gilbert Augustus Immelt b. 8/9/16 in Massieville, OH to Joel Immelt (one of Frederick C.'s children) and Odessa Marie McPherson. Joel was born 10/29/1882 and died 1/2/1947 in Columbus, OH. It says, "Joel and Marie are buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetary, Worthington, OH." Here is the link that gives more info on Joel. I hope it works for you.

http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~imel/imagepages/1-023.html
Do you know the father of Gelbert Immel and any birth years? It has been very hard researching this line as alot of the children changed the spelling of the name for some reason in the mid 1800's. I have found Immelt, Immel, Emel and Imel all to be related. If you can give me some additional information I would be happy to share family info.

I hope somebody has found some documentation and proof of any of the family legend that has passed down through the ages as fact. Seems like everbody believes the story even though there's never been any proof of it. Maybe someday we'll find something...It's a fun hunt in any case.

"It's now been replaced, I've heard, and doesn't say "revolutionary war soldier" any longer. "

Well, you heard wrong, and you have your facts reversed..

The original stone said

Peter Imel
died Jan. 3, 1849
aged 84 yrs., 9 mos., 5 das.

It is the new one that says

Peter Imel
1754 - 1849
A Soldier in the Revolutionary War
(photo attached)

The birth year was transcribed incorrectly on the new stone, and the Rev. War bit was added at the suggestion of someone (family?), nearly 100 years after Peter's death. Is that valid proof? No. Perhaps that is why no one can find any evidence of his war service.

I agree totally with your position. Unfortunately, I am now also looking for proof and documentation of the "family legend" of the five Immel brothers. Legend says they all came over with the Hessian army to fight in the RW. There is no documentation of this that I can find. Of the official German book on the people who came to fight, there is a Heinrich, which very well could be our Henry, but no other brothers and no other proof that Henrich is our Henry. The earliest true records I have of my ancestor, Peter Imel, is his marriage in Frederick, MD. On research, I have discovered that Frederick, MD, had a large population of German people and a prisoner camp was placed there for many of the captured Hessian soldiers. The population was very sympathetic to the Hessian men and pretty much let them incorporate into the population and many of them married. I think it's mighty likely that this might have been what happened to our family rather than the typical "legend" they defected and joined the Americans. I have seen my Peter Imel's original gravestone which said "Revolutionary War Soldier" and, of course, that lends more to the 'family legend" than what I suspect, so I don't know. But I would LOVE to find proof of the brothers' births in Kassel Hesse Germany, of their membership in the Hessian army that came to fight in the RW, of their defection and eventual involvement in the virginia's riflemen, etc. There is nothing that I've been able to find of any of these proofs. So if anybody has any proven documents of the "family legend" please let me know. I've been looking for it for a long time.

oh! I know what you mean. "WFT Est." has nothing to do with "Estates". It stands for World Family Tree Estimate, which means that the software that created that family tree estimated the dates you are seeing.

I'll assume that some or most of the 43 pages on that site may be accurate but I'm really not going to waste my time there, because the owner doesn't document anything and has admitted that she is just a "name collector". If anything on that site were in question, the owner probably couldn't tell me where they got the information anyway. That happens soooo often with people who just "collect" anything and everything they see, and don't verify any of it.

But as I said earlier, just because you see a name listed somewhere (or a birthdate, or marriage date, or anything else) DOES NOT MAKE IT FACT. In most cases, it probably is correct. But in the case of Solomon Imel, he just popped up out of nowhere, and NOBODY can tell me where they found the original documentation. Not other websites that somebody has copied over & over & over, but original SOURCE DOCUMENTATION, like a Will, Probate records, Land Records, etc. That is the type of thing that would factually connect Solomon to our Imels, and PROVE the connection. A website of undocumented names does not do the trick.

So ... we're right back where we've been forever. No documentation that Solomon existed. That means that nobody has any business putting Solomon's name in their tree or any tree. At least that is my position on the matter :-)

That's not what I'm asking. You wrote earlier "And if you go down through the generations there are a number of families who had Estates which were listed for Solomon Imel. Are these then true or false?"

An Estate usually means extensive land holdings plus personal property, whether it be 5 acres or 5000 acres, and things like a barn, house, livestock, furniture, etc.

So when you say "a number of families who had Estates" is that what you mean?

I've already cautioned that just because that website you're going to lists Solomon Imel at the top, IT DOES NOT MAKE IT RIGHT. Somebody has dreamed up Solomon Imel and now you're taking it as the gospel truth. THERE IS NO PROOF that Solomon Imel ever existed.

Unless you can PROVE otherwise, with something better than a website like you listed that has ABSOLUTELY NO DOCUMENTATON or SOURCES.

If you go to this web site it gives 43 pages from Solomon's desendants. On the first page where it lists Solomon Imel it says that the WFT Est. was born from 1708-1739 in Hesse-Cassel, Germany and the death of the WFT Est. was 1767 to 1825 in Hesse-Cassel, Germany.

Then under Solomon comes Henry Imel who was born in 1756, married to Margaret Disher. Then under her name is an Issac Imel who was born 1780. Under his name is Anna born 1782, there is no last name for her. And then under her name is James Imel born 1803. Under his name is Elizabeth born 1808 which must be his wife.

Then comes their children - - John Imel b: 1828 then the death of the WFT Est. is 1829-1918. The other children are Samuel, Thomas, Sarah, Robert, Henry, Jackson. All these have the years starting and death of this WFT Est. And this estates goes clear down through many generations. This web site is at:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/e/l/Debbie-L-We...

If this url doesn't get you there you might try just searching for familytreemaker.genealogy.com

Then search for Solomon Imel- - - his descendants.

Mary
