That sounds like the posh side of the Innes clan. The Dukes of Roxburgh and their offspring.

Definitely not my side of the clan - not many claims to fame there I'm afraid. Servants to academics in Edinburgh for over 150 years!

I've checked all the names and can't find any links, at the moment.

Greetings
Mike

Wondering if this info. provides any clues. My mystery is why Andrew Innes made Janet Mclaws executor of his estate while her husband was still alive

James INNES and Mary FLETCHER had
- at Selkirk, Selkirk
Andrew INNIS [sic], bap 12 Jan 1752
William INNES, bap 29 Nov 1753
Isobel INNES, bap 12 Oct 1755
- at Kelso, Roxburgh
James INNES, bap 11 Nov 1762
Wilimina INES [sic], bap 14 Nov 1764
Margaret INNES, bap 12 Mar 1767
So there's an Andrew, a James, and a Peggy (i.e. Margaret). But no John; but note the gap from 1755 to 1762. Also no Janet - but again note the gap.
I can't find any marriage of a Janet INNES (or even a Janet FLETCHER) to anyone with a name remotely like McLaws.

Andrew Innes Will

To all whom it may concern

Whereas I find it necessary for sundry good reasons to go to and travel the remainder of the summer in the Northern states, and I therefore from the uncertainty of all sublunary things consider it requisite a least to express my desire in regard to the disposal of whatever property I may possess at the time of my demise.

In the first place there is the material and trade of Jack & Co. as our books will show was put in altogether by all, some small matter expected put in by him last season. In case of my decease I wish that concern closed with all convenient speed. The debts of the concern discharged and all my lawful debts. Mr. W M Jack is by our agreement a copy of which accompanies this is entitled to one half of net property arising from the benefits some under that co-partnership which commenced on the 10 of March 1796, on the winding up of said concerns of WH Jack & Co. I bequest on half of the whole net proceeds thereat belonging to me as also any other personal property to my good prospects. . Parents James and Mary Innes (who by their last letter to me was living at Pennacle hill near Kelso in Scotland) and I wish my sister Peggy for her particular attention to them to participate with them, and at their decease that the property one half, the remaining half shall be for my brothers James and John Innes or their heirs, when I say heirs I mean children begotten in wedlock, then the other half of all my personal property I bequeath to James W. Mclaws youngest son and also all my real property I bequeath to the said James, which consists of the two tenements on Broad Street Augusta, at present occupied by Wm H Jack and Co and David Reid and CO. together making one entire lot as sold by the commissioner and known by the (No. 37), thirty seven, and all that two lots in the village whereon the rope workings, and two bounties of land which I received in payment from John Lamar lying on the Oconec River containing 575 acres. There is also a track of land of 700 acres. I received in payment from Thomas Murray but, I consider it only as personal estate, as by agreement it is to be sold and all of my demands paid back to him, and for the faithful execution of the above I desire that all who consider themselves my way interested that they my pay all due respect to that as my last and only will and testament, nevertheless its want of form and I request my good and trusty friend Mr. Urquarhart Esq. Wm H Jack will act as executor and Mrs. Janet Mclaws executress in all matter worthy of deliberation that they will act conjointly and beg of them that they will as far as in their powers see this my last Will and Testament put in force according to they true intent and meaning through of that each of them with Mr. Mclaws two youngest children Ann and James accept of a suit of mourning to be discharged from thy personal property, IN testimony of the above I subscribe my name this 10th day of July 1797 Andrew Innes

XXX I hold citizen rights (as they are stated) about 130.0000 in the several company, vir in the Georgia, Mississippi 105.000 any the remainder in the Femmesec? of Georgia Companies, the above consider as my person property.
Andrew Innes

At a court of ordinary held I and for the County of Richmond on the 6th July 1815
The forgoing last will and testament of Andrew Innes deceased Is as present in court and the hand writing and signature of the said dec. having been proven on the oath of Joseph Hutchinson and Wm J Hobby. It was Andrew Innes that the said will be established so far as respects the personal estate only and that be admitted to record.
_____ Isaac Herbert, Clerk

Very brief mention of "planted dells of Pinnacle Hill" and several "mansions" including "Pinnacle Hill" was in the Scotland Gazetteer on the page about the History of Kelso at:
http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/towns/townhistory235.html

The Roxburghshire Gazetteer index lists Pinnaclehill, Kelso and Pinnaclehill Farm, Kelso at
http://www.vivdunstan.clara.net/genuki/ROX/gazetteer/P.html

Mike do you have a James Innes, who would be the right age to have fathered a William Innes, b. ~ 1784/5? I'm thinking he might be the Wm Innes, b. 1785 Aikenway, but not sure. (There are 4 possibilities of Wm Innes, b. 1784/5 ish to a James).

My Wm Innes m. 1802 Helen Hay in Forfar, she b. 1780, Forfar, dau John Hay/Mary Nichol. Had two (known) children: James, b. 1803, Mussleburgh; Wm James, b. 1807, Sterling. Lived at one point in Alloa; by 1820 in Dundee, where son James m. 1822 Helen Reid and had 10-12 children.

Family stories have this line tied to the Innes of Innermarkie/Innes of Edingight. (I remember the stories of the beheading, but in my horror/fright of being a kid, don't remember which line we were of).

Wm Innes, b. 1807 Sterling, sentenced 1823, Forfar to 14 yrs transportation VDL. M. 1829 Greens POnd (Hobart), Tasmania Ellen Goodall (or Helen Goodhall). Unclear what happened to them or if they had children.

Any connections to these names or to Aikenway, Dundurcas, Boharm Parish (the 1802 marriage was supposedly also recorded there but I couldn't find it).

THANKS!
Marilyn

PS I've been to Elgin and stayed at Innes House -- very cool!!!

Sorry Sarah - I can't find any links of matches to my Innes family tree and it's many branches.

As you probably already know, Innes is a fairly common name originating in the area of North-East Scotland (the town of Elgin). I visited Elgina couple of years ago and almost every gravestone in the local cemetry was an Innes.

Frustrating.

Best of luck with your search.

Greetings
Mike Innes

Charles Innes

I am looking for information on Charles Innes who was born in Rothiemurchus about 1820. He married Jane Fraser (b 1820)in Boat of Garten 31 December 1846. They lived at Bennie Side, Tulligrue, Parish of Duthill & Rothiemurchus, County Inverness then travelled to Australia with sons William and Charles aboard the Sir Allan McNab 28 October 1853. Jane was pregnant and gave birth to son Allan McNab Innes at sea in December 1853. The Innes family arrived in Hobart Town on 1 February 1854. Charles and Jane were employed by Sir Richard Dry. Charles eventually purchase land at Duck River and was an early pioneer of the area (Horton / Circular Head, Tasmania). Their children were William, Charles, Allan McNab, Margaret Ellen (my great grandmother), Selina and Mary Jane.

Any information about the Innes family in Smithton / Circular Head / Duck River Tasmania would be greatly appreciated. Information as to Charles and Jane's parents and siblings would be greatly valued.

There were only 5-6 or so christenings in these records by Cockburn I do recall as one of the middle names (since it was unusual).

If you send me your email, I'll try and find my notes.

Marilyn
marilyn.arnold1@verizon.net
An Australian Innes - Searching For Scottish Ancestors

Hi, I have been researching Innes ancestors from Scotland. If anyone has any information regarding any of the below listed names, it would be very much appreciated.

My Great Grandfather is John "Jock" Innes, b 19 June 1904 in Glasgow, Scotland to Grace Nisbett (b 12 August 1883 in Renton, Dumbartonshire) and Angus Innes (b 30 July 1881 in Bonhill, Dumbartonshire). Angus and Grace married 26 January 1906. John had four brothers -
James "Jim" Innes b 9 September 1906
Angus Innes - b about 1908
Andrew Innes - b about 1912
Frank Innes - b about 1918

John immigrated to Australia in 1923 on his own, his brother James came out later that year and his parents and other brothers came out in 1928.

John married someone after arriving in Australia and had four children, names also unknown. He divorced his first wife and married my great grandmother in Melbourne, Australia in 1942, after they had already had five children together.

John's dad Angus is the son of a James Innes born about 1853 and Mary Miller Wright b about 1853.

James and Mary were married on 30 March 1877 in Alva, Stirlingshire. They had six children -
Nellie Innes b about 1877
Jeanie Innes b about 1878
Angus Innes b 30 July 1881
James Innes b about 1884
Mary Innes b about 1886
Thomas Innes b about 1888

James is the son of Angus Innes and Helen Wilson.

Angus and Helen dates of birth unknown, I believe had about nine children -
James Innes b about 1853
Margaret Innes b 22 June 1859
Mary Innes b 7 February 1861
Duncan Innes b 26 January 1863
Helen Innes b about 1865
Catherine Innes b 24 November 1866
Elizabeth Innes b 16 October 1867
Janet Innes b 16 October 1867 d 26 October 1867
Jessie Mellis Innes b 14 November 1870
(Catherine, Elizabeth and Jessie all died young from Scarlet Fever)

From information on census records Angus spent most of his life in or near Couligarten in Aberfoyle, but was possibly born in Renfrew.

I believe Angus's parents could be a James and Catherine Innes.

Cheers
Sarah Innes

Hi Gavin,
From your previous posts you know Harold was wounded and his wife was Mrs. Irene Innes of Bathurst Street, London, Ontario. Have you tried getting in touch with the owner of the tree on Ancestry? Although he lists Harold's wife as Ruby it seems very likely to be the same person.

Are you still at this address?

I think because your subject line was so general (no name, no approx dates, no name of wife) that it was too generic to get any responses. I only found this by searching for Dundee.

FYI -- Best to have
Subject: Firstname INNES (182x-188x), Dundee
Subject: Firstname INNES m. Firstname LAST NAME, Dundee
Subject: Firstname INNES, Dundee to TOWN, COUNTRY

You'll likely get a better response.

In any event. I am researching an Innes family of Dundee -- William Innes m. Helen Hay 1802 in Forfar. Children: James, b. 1803, Inveresk; William James, b. 1808, Sterling. James m. Helen REID, lived in Dundee (1841, 1851 Census). Had # of children including: Ann Reid, Alexander, James, William, Jane Haddon m. POWRIE, Helen Hay, Elizabeth Simpson, and Juliana m. SMART(not in correct order), just from memory. James and sons Wm and James and grandson Wm Innes were all sawmatkers. James/Helen and Helen Hay lived on Peter Street.

There are other Innes families in Dundee ... so don't know where you've looked (that is also helpful in a posting, so people can better help you.

Marilyn
Any connection to your family?
do you have a genealogy chart
walter de flandyrs to alexander innes?

i saw a copy of a book about the innes line once and it appeared that alexander was not a hugely common name, innes family members were relatively sparse.

the only alexander innes that fit that time period was an aide to bonnie prince charles. he went to ireland to supervise prince charles' interests.

then when bonnie prince charles landed in scotland, his parents were there to welcome him. the innes were protestants, i think, but jacobites.

there was a john innes who was a colonel at the battle of dunbar. cromwell trounced the scots/jacobites, and took many prisoners but let most of them go. he only kept the more "dangerous" prisoners and transported them to a church in england. they trashed the church. then cromwell got permission to "sell" them into indenture and this is how alexander innes came to lynn, MA. he appeared on the inventory of property of the lynn, MA ironworks when it went bankrupt. he had traveled between the ironworks in lynn, MA and taunton, MA.

i couldn't find a record of his marriage to catherine, but i wonder if he was the aide to bonnie prince charles and married in ireland.

the adultery case of catherine innes and a guy with a surname of paul or pauls was in the court records about taunton, MA.

then there was a land record in RI, providence.

after that, there was a copy of a letter that turmot rose wrote to alexander innes, inviting him to come to block island, RI. that's in the town minutes.

i think turmot rose was also one of those sold into indenture and was likely a relation or acquaintance of alexander innes, because otherwise how would they know each other.
Sorry to take so long to reply (not presently member of Ancestry).
If you are also a grandson of George Innes, I believe you are indeed my nephew and a cousin to my 3 children.
