My Innocent ancestor was William, from Newark upon Trent. He was convicted of breaking into a dye shop and transported to Van Dieman's Land ( Tasmania ) in 1831. His brother Thomas was also transported. William used the name Bradley as an alias.

Hi Leah,
Am still searching for any INNOCENT family associations in Sheffield, and have written to all of the ones listed in the Sheffield phone directory. Only one answer came back from an "F" Innocent, probably Frederick, who only got back as far as the 1850's in his own genealogical search, (telling me that the family probably came from Spain or Italy), but I have John the shopkeeper, born 1803, in Eccleshall.
His mother, Sarah, was living with him when she died in 1836 and was 75 years old, but can't find what her maiden name was, nor what her husband's name was..

Family name

Hi Patrick
Innocent, from what I've been told, is a French Huguenot name. I understand that originally it came from the Italian Innocenti and that due to persecution of the Protestants many Italian Innocenti families fled to France where the name changed over the years. During the revocation of the Edict of Nantes again many protestants were forced to flee and settled in other European countries. My ancestors came to England and settled in the Midlands to work in the linen and silk factories. Maybe you have some more detailed information about your family, I would love to hear about it.
