Hi Cheney2208,
Pretty sure they aren't the same Eleanor, worse luck.
My Eleanor 1879-1963 married Alfred Spurling Boldero 1878-1963 and had 2 kids. Eleanor was one of 10 children.
Her parents were William Insley ~1845-1881 & Margaret McGavin 1843 - 1923. William & Margaret came to New Zealand in the early 1860's. I have a fair amount of information about them and their children but haven't yet found any Insley links further back past William, who was from Cork, Ireland and Margaret from either Glasgow or Ayreshire, Scotland.

Where is your William Gardner Insley from? Are there any other Williams in your tree that could be mine?

-Ellen

Mary Eleanor Insley daughter of William Gardner Insley and Mary Kemple is my great grand aunt. I am descended from James Insley, Mary Eleanor's brother. My father is Howard Insley. I would be interested to know if my Mary Eleanor is your Eleanor. She married Robert Deringer in 1858.

I'm descended from William Insley & Margaret McGavin. I am their daughter, Eleanor's Great Granddaughter. I'm guessing you are a Cullen from your user name. I'm wondering which of the 3 Nazer Cullen marriages you are descended from;
Marguerita & Guy, Vera & Arnold or Myrtle & Douglas? Am I right about there being 3 Nazer Cullen marriages, or was there a 4th?
Where you at the last reunion, I think it was held about 1996? Pretty sure it was the 90's anyway :)

What would you like to know?

-Ellen Cooper

Wife of Asbury Insley

In the 1850 census for Nottingham, Harrison, Ohio, Asberry Insley was age 24, living with a Pittis family. The IGI lists a marriage in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, of Laronia Wagy to Asbiry Insley on 14 September 1854. (The entry was submitted by a member of the LDS Church, not by the transcription of a public record.) The 1860 census for Rush, Tuscarawas, Ohio, has Lavona, age 22, in the household of Asbury Aimslee. The 1870 census for New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas, Ohio, has Lavina, or possibly Larina, living with Asbury Insley. In 1880 Asberry was a widower in a boarding house in New Philadelphia.

The censuses of the 1800s show no Wagys in either Harrison or Tuscarawas counties. A respondent of a Tuscarawas County mailing list did not find the 1854 marriage among those for that county.

Does anyone have knowledge of Laronia/Lavona/Lavina Wagy and her parents?

Rock
rockjohnson@earthlink.net
I just wanted to clear up some information that I had previously posted on the Walker board in regards to Zachariah Walker, born 1785 Maryland, died 1841 Greene county, Ohio, married unknown to Sarah unknown. For several years, I had believed Zachariah's wife to be Sarah/sally Barngrover and that he had come out of Highland county, Ohio to Greene county around 1830. I had based this information on information that was given to me several years ago. I now believe this to be incorrect. I am basing this on the fact that I know all of the children of said couple etc. and the Sarah that this other Zachariah Walker could not be mine as the marriage took place in 1807 meaning that my Sarah Walker would have been only 9 years old. I know for a fact that the Zachariah and Sarah Walker Ritenour buried at Bethel cemetery in Greene are mine. I have documents to prove this. I believe that they perhaps were married in Maryland and came to Greene county between 1820 and 1830. I believe that there may be a connection to these Highland county Walkers...what I do not know yet. Sarah Unknown Walker remarried Daniel P. Ritenour c1848 in Greene county and is found on the 1850 census with her new husband along with some of his children and hers. Living next door is her daughter Rebecca Walker Ritenour who married Daniel B. Ritenour, son of Daniel P. and his first wife Elizabeth. (hope that I got that right...memory)..I believe that the INsleys were connected to the Walkers in some way which I hope to find this year. I am looking for the maiden name of Sarah and any Walkers who are related to this family. Children names were John W, Samuel L, William H, Mary M, Walker McFarland(Joseph), Zachariah, Rebecca Walker Ritenour and Zara Marion. SusanDFenn@comcast.net

By the way, I found the book I mentioned online. Here's the entry about Zara Insley: "Zara Insley, one of the first settlers in the township, came, with a large family, from Maryland, about 1804, and purchased one hundred acres of land, now owned by John Little. Mr. Insley was married twice, and had a family of twelve children, none of whom reside in the neighborhood of their old home." From "History of Greene County" by R.S. Dills, 1881. http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Greene/GreeneRossTp.htm
Further: "The Bethel grave-yard is still in use, and was established about 1830. Perhaps more old settlers are buried here than in any other place in the township. Members of the families of Gordins, Walkers, Insleys, Tarkins, Millers, Ballards, Shigleys, Frasiers, Snodgrasses, and a host of others, are familiar to all persons in the township as having been influential persons in the community in which each resided. Requiescat in pace."

I am a great-great-great grandson of Zara Insley. (My grandmother's maiden name was Insley, and my mother is still in touch with her Insley cousins.) I also visited Bethel Cemetary and surrounding area in 1985, and did some family research at that time. Two notes that you probably know, but aren't mentioned in the posts. Zara Insley's will is on record in Greene County. I located the former location of his farmhouse from the information provided in the will. I have a copy of the will, but it's at my parents' house in Maryland, and I'm currently living overseas. Also, I found an old book in the Greene County library about the early settlers of the county, and it included a sentence or two about Zara Insley coming from Maryland. I don't have my research here with me, but as I recall, he had at least 11 children by his two wives. I'm sure you've seen all this, from the level of research indicated in your posts. I grew up in Maryland and would sure love to track further back from Zara. I did some research on Maryland records and find many Insleys at that time on the Eastern Shore and Prince George's County, but cannot find the connection to Zara that would lead to his parents. Unfortunately, many of the original records were lost in fires long ago.

Michael

My great grandad was Thomas Insley d.o.b.: 1883. He was the son of George Insley d.o.b: 1855 and his brother was Thomas Insley d.o.b:1846. They were the children of Thomas and Mary Insley. Thomas was the son of William and Ann Insley. William was a farmer at Nether Whitacre. I can remember an Aunt Ada Insley visiting us from America where she went to with her sister Elsie Insley. Two other sisters also went to America. Annie and Florence Insley but I can find no record of them. Hope this is not too confusing.

Regards Judy Jennings

A little of the info I have on Griffin M Bruffett or Bruffitt --he was in the 107th Illinois Infantry Co E Rank 2nd Lt was in as Bruffet. He was in 1880 census Piatt Co Mansfield with second wife Julia (Bowman) he had married Susannah Freeman in Madison Co.Ohio 11 Oct 1841 before coming to IL. There is a lot of cem records in Madison Co. and that pretty much ties the families. Susannah died 26 Oct 1853 in Piatt Co. Il she was sister to Amanda Freeman that married Wm Bruffett 2 and mother of my great grandmother Amanda Freeman Miner. I do not have Griffin's death record but was after 1880. In Emily Piatt's History of Piatt Co. there is a section on him. Ch. John W, Elam W, Mary Ellen, Daniel, and Jacob
Jacob Freeman, brother to two sisters above was researched fully by MJ Good in OK and I have that info I will check and see if she had proof of Griffin

You may contact me at email address if you would like info on children of Griffin and Susannah. I have cem info and so on but do not want to over load the list if only you and I are interested !

Kay

Susan,

I am very interested in learning more about the estate sale that the Insleys took part in.When did Zachariah die?
I have been to that cemetery many times (Bethel Cemetery). The last time I was there in the 90's I had to keep my eye on 3 pit bulls who lived in the nearby house and were not happy I was in the area. They kept barking at me and I thought they were going to chase me, but they stayed near their home.
I have not been able to link Mitchel Insley to Zara but believe they were related. Please explain what you mean about the two Zara Insleys.
Thanks,
Michael Little

Interested in your Zara INsley from Greene county, Ohio...the reason....
1. he is buried closest to my grandparents in Bethel cemetary, Greene county, OHio
2. That grandfather Zachariah Walker and Sarah Barngrover Walker named their last child Zara (and Zara is NOT a common name)
3. I have recently acquired a copy of the listing of Zachariah's estate and not only are the two Zara Insley's listed as purchasing items but so is John & Sarah Insley, Thomas INsley, and Mitchel Insley. IT lists what they purchased and how much they paid for it.
4. I have found the INsleys living near some of my relatives back in the mid 1800's.

So, my question is ...were they just friends or perhaps related by marriage. Zachariah was born in 1785 in Maryland, then went on to Kentucky and then moved to HIghland county, Ohio around 1799/1801. He married in Highland county to Sarah(Barngrover is also Berngruber), they moved up to Greene county around around 1830. ...give or take a couple of years)

It is not just the unusual name but the fact that they are buried not too far from each other. Another Walker grandchild is buried near the Insleys also. I have been to the graveyard twice. I can't remember if I took pictures of those graves but I can if I go out there again in the future. The cemetary is uncared for and the Insley graves are falling apart. etc. I was just there on Friday, Oct 20th. Get back to me....by the way, It is possible that Jane Ash and Jane McCauley(mcCully) are the same person as they were both married to a Zara Insley on Dec 30, 1817 in Xenia. SusanDFenn@comcast.net

It also appears that Georges mother Ida married a scond time, this time to Eli Joushua Miles my Great Uncle . I have a picture of George and bud taken in the late 1920's and a picture pf El Miles with a small girl named Judy described on the back of the picture as Georges daughter.

Darrel Beatty

Andrew Insley 1600s, son William, Dorchester MD land

Andrew Insley had large amounts of land surveyed for him ca. 1668+ in Dorchester Co. area boundary with Caroline Co. MD and Kent Co. DE

In 1715 pursuant to Andrew's will some tracts were consolidated and resurveyed for son William as part of land division between William and his brother James Insley. This is spelled out in the resurvey for the tract, the whole called "William's Desire."

But by 1758 nearly all of this was considered to be Vacant Land and was resurveyed for Archabald McKallum / McCallum, now called "Addition to Williams Desire".

Key locations were Hackett's cart road and the east end of Green Pond in 1755, not given these names in 1715. Does anyone know where Green Pond was or what it is called now?

It appears that the son William d. in or by May 1726. What happened to his son James? Why didn't other members of the family inherit the land? Or did they not pay taxes on it so it reverted to Lord Baltimore?

All help appreciated,
Jade

The Insley's

I would love to hear from any Insley's on the Derbyshire/Leicestershire/Staffordshire border - particularly around Church Gresley/Swadlincote in order to try and tie them in to my family tree.

My branch is in Warwickshire, but it seems we originated from Shackerstone and Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire if this helps.

Branches of the family alao went to Burton on Trent and Aston in Birmingham

Dear Shelly,

Many thanks for your E-Mail. Sorry to say that as things stand most of my Insley's seem to come from Leicestershire or Warwickshire. It's not to say we aren't connected, as the name is comparitively unusual in the UK, and geographically mostly located in the Midlands.

Anything more you have to go on, and I will have another look in my records!

For now, all the best

Gary

Dear Allison,

Many thanks for your e-mail which I read yesterday. My own family comes from Shackerstone nr. Market Harborough in Leicestershire, which is close to Derbyshire, and a lot of them lived either side of the border.

There are a lot of gaps in information, but I have a line back to the 1750's. Do you have more information on where Bill Insley's family came from prior to the 1940's? I ask, because of the 300 Insley's or so listed in the phone books, 80% of them are all still in Staffs, West Midlands, Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Derbyshire, but unfortunately, there are
several distinct branches.

Perhaps if you get any more info I may be able to help further?

Best regards

Gary Insley
