Morning, I am researching my husbands African-American line. I am stopped at the slave schedules of Freeman B Irby. We have Jennie Irby born 1827, and son Barber with wife Lucy. Was wondering if these names have shown up in any of your records.

My gg g/p were Martha Jane (Irby) and James Buchannon
Rennaker from Mo.. I could'nt find much about her including any pictures. Her folks also came from Laurens County, S.C.. I could not find anything about Amanda Jane in my records on the Irbys but there must be a close connection between her and Martha Jane. I did finally find Martha Jane's daughter (Etta Mae - my Grandmother) after 25 years and now pretty much have quit looking further. If I do run across anything on Amanda Jane, I will get it to you.
Hi everyone...sorry this took so long. I have spoken with a Mr. Ron Irby who is not only the caretaker of New Bethel Cemetery, but a descendent of John Stewart Irby and owner of the cemetery. He spends the weekends in Energy close to the old home place. I specifically asked him about John and his wife and told him of the confusion with the U.S. government's accounting of where John and his wife are buried. He says the government is wrong, that John and wife have always been at New Bethel. The new tombstones were issued from the government to mark John's service in the War of 1812 and put on their graves in the last ten years by the family. (I'm assuming thats the family still living in Energy)
My brother went to all the cemeteries in Savoy, both black and white and could find no John Stewart Irby. I hope this helps. Sorry for the delay.

Irby is the name of a small Irish township. It was common when people came to the U.S. back then to use the name of the town they were from, or in some cases of course the town had been named for the family. Hope this helps.

Her daughter Bernice Lenore my school friend had died in August of 1999.

Would like to be able to contact Carole but haven't found out how to do that yet. Carole has written several religious articles. If you figure it out let me know.

Hope you vaction for the harvest in Colorado went well.

Marie

However, there are a number of Irby decendants living in California. Yes, he was a great escape artist. We have a video of him performing with Houdini's equipment.

I'm sure others have replied at this point, but thought I would email just in case.

We've talked but thought a post for all to see is worthwhile. My ancestor from Greene County Missouri is John S Irby, a mason from VA born about 1815 (varies slightly in each census). Pretty sure this is John Saunders Irby -- papers for military enrollment show John S Irby, mason, from Halifax VA. Described as having black hair and black eyes, which fits the photo you sent of John Saunders Irby.

Phew, love it when something connects!

My brother just called from New Prospect Baptist Cemetery on Highway 11 in Savoy, Mississippi and reports there are no Irbys buried in this cemetery. He also says there was a picture of an African-American man on a tombstone so could be an African American Cemetery and Church. I will check out the history of both New Bethel in Energy and New Prospect in Savoy next week at LCDAH. Hope this helps.

Louise and I were great friends and collaborated on my side of the Irbys. The wooden mausoleum you speak of is at New Hebron Church cemetery outside Energy. There are two new tombstones with John Stewart and Wife. I was there last weekend and have those pictures. The stones are US government replacement stones and relatively new. Sandraperry says US GOV has John Stewart listed as buried at New Prospect Baptist Church in Savoy. I will let you know. If you want the pics from Energy, will be glad to send.

thanks, I found them. However, I am interested in further information if you or malinda find anything. louise stratton, who did so much research on this family, died; but her research has been donated to a couple of genealogical societies. MJFickle told me that Louise had a picture of a shelter where J S was buried. Perhaps it was the same one you have. Thanks for your reply to my message.

I don't know exactly where that is but I can find it I feel sure. Is that where John Stewart and wife are supposed to be buried? I have printed it off and will ask at LCDAH when I go back in two weeks. I will also double check on New Bethel. I descend from John and Martha Irby through my mother. I don't think I have anything on John Williams but I will look and get back to you. Maybe we can get this thing sorted out. Did you by any chance call the number of Roy Irby on the fence at New Bethel. I assume he is the caretaker. Wonder would he know. My brother is going this weekend. I'll get the number and call.

That I don't know. I descend from him and am in Meridian on a regular basis to care for my mother. I will check with the Lauderdale County Department of Archives and History. They usually have church histories which could shed some light. I will keep you posted on what I learn in the next couple of weeks.

Hi, thanks for the response, I have been there also and seen the wooden building and the new stones that have been added in recent years. My concern is why the government has them listed as being buried in a different cemetery. Were the markers put at New Bethel because he is thought to be there or are there records proving he is there and the government records are incorrect.

My mother and I went yesterday to Energy, Mississippi in Clarke County. I asked a man in town where New Bethel Church was and he gave me directions. The church which is no longer in use and has no sign is probably 7-10 miles from energy. John Stewart Irby and his wife are buried in a wooden mausoleum in the cemetery there along with lots of other Irbys. I have pictures on my phone.

Well, I did see it after all :).

I don't think this Irby and mine are the same because mine was born around 1808 (from my faded memory) in Knoxville. Thus, my Irby would have been about 52 in 1860. However, it seems highly likely the two are related in some way, perhaps father/son. I will have to check to remember all of Irby's sons names. If you want, I can give you what information I have and you can see where it meshes with yours. Email markt207@hotmail.com.
