They later moved to Kansas and resided in Elk City in both the 1920 and 1930 census schedules. I am especially interested in the Strouss family line.

Has anyone researched this family beyond what is written in the Descendants of John Irish ... p. 181?

I think I may have a connection to this line but have been unable to document it.

Isaac C. Irish born abt 1811 in CT (death record of his son Samuel says his father Isaac was born Lebanon, CT.)

1810 census - Lebanon CT has 1 Irish family headed by Job Irish.

1820 Finds a Job Irish in Columbia, CT.

1840 Census finds Job Irish and Isaac Irish heading households in Southbridge, MA.

Isaac Irish married Lucy Dodge in Southbridge, MA on 13 Jan 1840.

I have plenty of information and documentation to share on the descendants of Isaac and Lucy. I am looking for documentaion and information to support or refute the theory that Isaac C. Irish was a son of Job Irish and Betsey O'Brian. I have not found mention of this family in the Barbour Collection.
I do know that the Descendants of John Irish has been recorded on the internet. I have the book, and find many mistakes in it. However, it is informative and gives many sources. As for a Gedcom, I doubt if any one has taken the time to do such extensive work. Not sure if the book was copied on Roots Web or another site. Has been a lone time since I looked at it.
Gayle Irish Wolz

Dear Thomas,

I misstated where James was from. It was not Tipperary County. I didn't look at my tree and got him mixed up with the McMahons. There is a US Census record for James that has County Kerry Ireland as the place of birth but Kerry is crossed out and "Mayo" is written.

idget was born in Rathmore with Nohaval and Kilcummin, Kerry, Ireland and baptized at St. Josephs Church in Rathmore. I have been there. I have James and Bridget on English census records in 1881 (Harrington, Cumberland, England),1891(Distington, Cumberland, England) and 1901(Workington Cumberland England). Left 6/25/1904on the St. Paul Arrived in New York City Ellis Island 7/4/1904 and went to Rome, NY. Their daughter Cecilia was my paternal grandmother.

Yes James is from Glenmore in county Kilkenny. All the Irish families have been from there for the past 250 years. My family are from there so I am pretty sure and I have lots of documentation on them. The only Irish family in co. Tipperary live in Carrick on Suir and originally came from Glenmore. If you know of any Irishes from Tipperary I would be interested as it would be a line I would like to look at. Ryan is a tipperary name but is also found in other counties. James is not listed in any of the parish registers for his birth year or there about, so I have constructed a possible story to let him fit. It is long so it would contact me by email at thomasirishartist@gmail.com
Could you let me know where Bridget was born? regards T.

Do you have any documentation showing they lived in Glenmore? I have found where Bridget was born and where James and Bridget lived after they went to Wales. I have been unable to find any documentation on James, where he was born or baptized or who his parents were. He may have been born in County Tipperary.

Aine, I can give you some information on James Irish and Bridget Ryan.I dont know how much background you have on them but I imagine it is mainly their lifes in the U.S.
They came from an area in South Kilkenny called GLENMORE.
If you look at a map of Ireland it is about 8 miles north of Waterford city. You may have heard of Waterford Crystal, well it is the same place. A number of people have made the same enquiry as you on James and Bridget all residing in the U.S. but I have not been able to make contact with them. They may have moved on. Please do contact me and I will do my best to help you move on your interest in your Irish ancestors.
Was there any connection of the wife of Eugene, s/o Schuyler IRISH, to the first wife of Clark M. IRISH?

Schuyler IRISH, 49, was on the 1860 census in Dodge Co., MN, with wf. Julia, 46. Willis & Stella Irish's book, Descendants of John Irish, p. 416, has Schuyler IRISH (13 Aug. 1810 - 4 Feb. 1879, Milton Twp., Dodge Co., MN) m. 26 Aug. 1835, Boston, Erie Co., NY, Juliana HOYT (6 Jan. 1814 - 8 Aug. 188_, Dodge Co., MN). Their eldest daughter Oleann (17 Sep. 1856, Michigan - 16 July 1920, St. Paul, MN) m. 12 Apr. 1857, Dodge Co., Henry E. WARNER. Son Eugene Allen IRISH (6 Je. 1844 - 7 Je. 1908, Mantorville, MN) m. 28 May 1869, Emma STONE, b. 28 Feb. 1845, Parishville, St. Lawrence Co., NY.

In 1860, Hopkinton P. O., St. Lawrence Co., NY, STONE:
John, 53 [44 in 1850, Parishville]; Pilinthy, 46 [Philantha, 37 in 1850];
Emma, 15; Almira, 13 [Elmira, 4 in 1850]; Oscar, 11; Huldah, 7; Amos, 4.
RootsWeb shows older children, but the 1850 online database is alphabetized, so households aren't clear.

RootsWeb says Philantha TUPPER (9 July 1812, Parishville, NY - 21 Mar. 1893, Mantorville, MN) was dau/o Silas TUPPER & Polly EASTMAN. One RootsWeb entry says John STONE, s/o Wm. STONE & Lucretia BLOOMER, was born in New York and another says in Ireland.

Any clues?

Re: Susan Irish m. Gilbert Barns or Barnes, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada

It’s been some time since I even thought about Barn(e)s genealogy, but let me see what I know for fact... The problem with those boys is that there are several Gilbert Barns, and it’s generally difficult to tell how many and who is who.

I have looked at the early census records for Haldimand Twp. in Cobourg Library. Here’s a little of what I found:

Gilbert Barns first shows up in Haldimand Twp. with his own household in 1816, as does Thomas Barns.

Collation of census records for Haldimand Twp. for Gilbert Barns/Barnes:
1816 himself, 1 woman over 16, 1 male under 16
1817 himself, 1 woman over 16, 0 males under 16, 1 female under 16
1818 himself, 1 woman over 16, 1 male under 16, 1 female under 16
1819 data too illegible to read clearly (although Gilbert Barnes does appear)
1820 Did not find Gilbert. Thomas Barnes is there: 1 male and 1 female both over 60.
1821 himself, 1 woman over 16, 2 males under 16 The female under 16 who appeared in the 1816 and 1817 censuses is no longer in the Gilbert Barns household. Unless she was a teenager in 1816, she would not have been old enough to leave home. I think that is unlikely because other children under 16 show up subsequently. Of course it is possible she was not a child of Gilbert and Unknown to begin with.
1822 himself, 1 woman over 16, 1 male under 16
1823 No record of Gilbert, but there are 8 people in Thomas Barns household (6 more than 1822)
1824 himself (Gilbert), 1 woman over 16, 1 male under 16, and 1 female under 16
1825 himself, 1 woman over 16, 1 male under 16, and 1 female under 16
1826 ???
1827 himself, 1 woman over 16, 1 male under 16, and 1 female under 16
1828 himself, 1 woman over 16, 1 male under 16, and 2 females under 16
1829 ???
1830 himself. NO OTHERS IN HOUSEHOLD. What happened???
1832 himself, 1 female over 16, 1 male under 16

1832 is the last time I can find him in Haldimand Twp. data.
--------------------------------------------------
However, there is a marriage in 1834 where Gilbert is a bondsman:
William Horace Farrar of Colborne, potter to Jane Smith of Sidney, spinster; bondsman: Gilbert Barnes of Coburg, carpenter and Leonard Perrin of Cramahe, blacksmith. June 26, 1834 at Coburg.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
BARNES GILBERT .... HAMILTON TOWNSHIP .... A 18 ... 1835 ...

There is Gilbert Barns who married Lydia Lawson (FamilySearch, so unreliable data):
Gilbert Barnes
Birth: Haldimand,Northumb Co, , , Ontario
Marriages: 01 JUN 1830 Murray Twp, Northumberland, Ontario
Spouse: Lydia Lawson Birth: 30 MAR 1806 Murray, Northumberland, Ontario
Father: Matthew P Lawson Mother: Margaret OR Peggy Lawson

In Men of Upper Canada- Militia Nominal Rolls 1828 - 1829,
by: Bruce Elliot, Dan Walker and Fawne Stratford-Devai; there is this:

1st Reg't Northumberland Militia [Hamilton and Haldimand Townships]
1st Company, Capt. John Grover has listed:
Pvt. Gilbert Barnes, age 38 (so he’s born about 1790)

4th Company, Capt. Ozem Strong has listed:
Pvt. David Barnes, age 28 (born about 1800)

Muster Roll signed Dec. 15, 1828

-------------------------------------------------
Letter from Gilbert Barns (2nd) to Edward McMahon, Sept. 15, 1831: Gilbert has discovered a lead mine containing some silver and wants permission to mine it. It is in the rear part of the Newcastle District in one of the surveyed but uninhabited and he believes ungranted townships. Is this where he went after he left Haldimand Twp? (I probably have a copy of this letter.)

In 1880 census (long after Gilbert is dead), his son Eldridge P. Barnes and his family are living in Michigan (Antrim Co.), and their neighbors are Hubbells who were born in Canada. Gilbert's daughter-in-law is a Hubbell. Seth Hubbell, b. 1824 in Canada, says his parents were born in Vermont. Seth's wife is Almira Kellogg, b. 1835.

Per FamilySearch.com:
Seth Hubbell Compact Disc #102 Pin #279342
Sex: M
Birth: 2 Mar 1825 Place: Myrtle, , Ontario, Canada
Death: 13 Jul 1888 Place: Milton Twp., , Michigan
Father: John Hubbell Disc #102 Pin #279335
Mother: Sylvia Hubbell Disc #102 Pin #279339
Marriage(s):
Spouse: Julia Ann Kellogg Disc #102 Pin #279395
Marriage: abt 1846 Place: , , Ontario, Canada
Spouse: Rachel Almira Kellogg Disc #102 Pin #279400
Marriage: abt 1854 Place: , , Ontario, Canada

But I don’t trust FamilySearch.com’s accuracy. You really need to see a primary source, and they are not a primary source.

Are you confused? : ) I sure am! My Barns is John Barns b. about 1822. He lived all of his adult life in Northumberland County. There is a John Sr. and a John Jr., but they only show up in one census (1821), so neither one of them is mine, or they stayed under the radar. Is my John Barns a son of Gilbert Barns b. 1790??

This whole bunch definitely seem to be related, and it’s my guess that Thomas b. 1860 (who dies in Northumberland Co. about 1842) and John Barns are either brothers, or John is maybe a son or nephew of Thomas. They are first granted land in Emily Twp. but sell it and move to Haldimand Twp. Land Grant: BARNES JOHN ... EMILY ... 1821 Thomas gets a grant too.

My interest in Susan Irish is simply a hope that she might shed some light on the relationship between these various Barns in Northumberland Co., Ontario. As a descendant of John Barns b. 1821, I would like to figure out who his parents were.

I hope that some of this information is of help to you. Do tell me about Susan Irish and who her three husbands were!
If you would like more details, I would be happy to share them through e-mail. (I`m still working out exact details myself, but I have another researcher`s help at the moment.)

Frank Chandler's parents were Forrester Chandler and Mary Pennington. Not sure what happened to Frank Chandler but Letia (spelling varies) remarried and becomes a Roberts.

Here are a few more details, mostly from census databases. Otsego Co., NY, census has two men named Oliver BUEL(L) in 1820 & 1830, & Oliver BEWELL in 1840. That must have been Oliver BUELL (18 Je. 1792 - 22 Aug. 1855) per FamilySearch.

Ancestry database of the 1850 census of Middlefield, Otsego County, has first names alphabetized, so you cannot identify households, but it does have the names BUELL, Oliv(i)er, 58; Elisabeth, 49; Ira, 27; Amanda, 20; & Menso (Amasa?), 12.
Middlefield, Otsego, NY, 1860 Census, BUELL:
Elizabeth, 48; Ira, 38; Amasa, 22; Amanda, 35; Emma J., 1.

1870: BUEL, Ira H., 46; Manda, 40; Emma, 11; Helen, 5; Elizabeth, 60.

FamilySearch database of the 1880 Census, Middlefield, Otsego, NY, BUELL:
Amanda, 56, NY NY NY, wid.
dau. Mar. 1878, NJ.

Otsego Co., NY, 1910:
FITCH, Willie C., 50, Helen D., 45; Peter CHANDLER, 27, & Paul F. CHANDLER, 2.
PICKENS, John, 52; Emma, 52; Kennet CLENDLER {CHANDLER?}, 4.

RootsWeb: Amanda IRISH (26 July 1822, NY - 20 Je. 1909, dau/o George IRISH) m. 185_, NY, Ira BUELL. Dau. Emma, b. Mar. 1859, m. John PICKENS (22 Sep. 1852/7 - ca. 1920). The IRISH line is taken back to Little Compton, RI, but I don't know of any proof for the maiden name of John IRISH's wife Elizabeth, possibly THURSTON. Both RISLEY & SAVORY have been suggested and discarded as Elizabeth's maiden name. Helen & Emma BUELL are in the book Descendants of John IRISH, Immigrant, 1629 - 1693, & Allied Families, by Willis Luther IRISH & Stella B. [PUTNAM] IRISH, 1964, Dingley Press, Freeport, ME.

Could you clarify what you mean by "they both get babies bearing the Chandler name"?

Looking for info on Helen and Emma Buell, they were the children of Amanda Irish Buell (1822 New York). Emma married John Pickens and i think her sister married Will or Willie Fitch. I'm trying to piece my family together. My mother died when i was a small child. Several names in the mix. I can see in the census that Helen FItch and Emma Pickens live close, that what makes me believe they are sister's. Than they both get babies bearing the Chandler name.

Linda NEWTON, 8 in 1880

I believe that I've found the NEWTON side on censuses.

In 1870, Chautauqua Co., NY:
NEWTON, Daniel, 32; Minerva, 35; Daniel, 10; George, 5; Henry, 3; & John, under 1.

In 1880, Irving, Cauutauqua, NY,
McGRADY, Patrick, 45, blacksmith, he & parents b. Ireland.
McGRADY, Mineva {sic}, 44, she & parents b. VT.
Stepchildren b. NY: NEWTON, Daniel, 19; George, 15; Johnie, 11; & Linda, 8.
Son James McGRADY, 2, NY.
[Since Linda NEWTON was 8 and James McGRADY was 2, the death of Daniel NEWTON must have been ca. 1872 - 1876.]

In 1850, there was a Daniel, 13, of Hanover, Chautauqua, NY, but on RootsWeb Family Trees, it says that his father was Charles, and the only Charles there was 15. His grandfather was supposedly Philo, but the only Philo was 12. Perhaps microfilm of the actual census would shed more light on the subject.

USGenWeb has in Maple Grove Cemetery (among others named NEWTON),
Philo NEWTON (21 June 1838 - 25 Aug. 1872)
Albert NEWTON, d. Aug. 1864, aged 17 mos., s/o D. A. & Minerva
[That explains the four to five year difference in ages of Daniel & George].

Index of the 1830 Census, Hanover, Chautauqua, NY, NEWTON, Heman & Samuel, 381; Philo, 382; Lyman, 387. There's more on RootsWeb Family Trees but little documentation.

My great great grandfather is Nehemiah Leavitt, and I have a photograph of William Irish at over 100 years old (!) here. What I will give you is the info my mother scribbled down long ago--whether the dates are births or marriages I haven't researched yet. She wrote:

James Irish, b. England
Wm. Irish 1741
Mary McAllister
______
Thomas Irish May 17, 1766
Eliz. Roberts b. 1769
_____________
Wm. Irish June 25, 1805
Lucilva (unsure of spelling?) Leavitt

____________
Wm. Irish 1741
Mary McAllister
________________
Phoebe Irish
Jonathan Record, Jr. 1782
___________

Margery Record 1809
Nehemiah Leavitt
_________________
Joseph S. irish 1832
Hannah G. Leavitt
_____________

That's it on the scribblings of my mother. Nehemiah Leavitt's son John Greenleaf Leavitt married my great grandmother Susan Chapman Blazo, they had Robert Greenleaf Leavitt, who had my mother Constance Ruggli Leavitt Hanson, who had me--Mary Freeman (I've been through a lot of name changes and finally took my original first and middle name "Mary Freeman", which happens to be my great grandmother Susan leavitt's mother's maiden name, Mary Freeman (Blazo).

Hope this helps!

mimifreeman@gmail.com

Our family descends from Cora Irish b. c1865 Lamoille, Hyde Park Twnshp., Vt. m. Arthur James (James Arthur) Pixley c1880 in Lamoille. Their son was my grandfather, but they may have also had: Stella & Anna?
My grandfather was adopted his Arthur James' father James M. Pixley in Chippewa Falls, Wi.
I had understood that Arthur & Cora had been divorced...but have more recently discovered that they may have both died c1890.
My grandfather had a dtr. Stella-who died young. Was she named after his 'sister'?
This line has been a real problem...nothing but 'dead-ends'
Do any of these names 'ring a bell' with anyone?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
For more on these lines you can check out my website:
pixleyblair.tribalpages.com
Thanks
Email: troypix@webtv.net

I Googled and didn't find anything of importance except that others have different birth years for Benjamin, ca. 1761 - 1771, instead of 1774, which would seem logical. Parents David & Ann m. 1759, and only the first child had a specific date of birth listed.
Did you copy the 1860 census records for both families while they are available free on Ancestry?

Oh, well, we're all a little crazy. The others in the family think we are--to spend all this time on genealogy. We went to my husband's aunt's place and asked her to identify some of the people in photos. She said, "What does it matter? They're all dead."

She was crazy and so was Lewis Erickson, atleast that was the family story. LOL perhaps that is why my 2 older Aunts were a little crazy. My mother and her brother often would say atleast they weren't crazy and either were their children - HA. And to top it all off- one of the kids of my crazy aunts has all of the pictures so it is a little difficult for me to get them to see if there is any pictures of Lewis Erickson, his wedding or Georgia's parents or Lewis's parents. I just hope they haven't tossed them out.
Ancestry has free access for three days. In 1860, Montraville & his son Luther were together, and Abner and another Luther, 22, were together. You could check whether Abner left a will.

Have you ordered Luther's Civil War PENSION record (different from the military record)? I checked online and found only Luther C. IRISH, widow Theresa. It's hard to read. He served in B 77 NY Inf, [B and? 77 NY Inf.?] He received a pension [illegible, but probably #942,081], cert. 724,488, WI; Widow's pension, 6 May 1897, #653,661, cert. 718,033, WI.

If Georgia had four husbands, she must have been more than a little crazy. :-)

This is what I have, confirmed for Luther and family-
Luther Clark and his wife Theresa Alma Clark Irish are my
great great grandparents. If you look in ancestry I have posted on the web site a picture of Luther's headstone-
I also have a picture of Georgia Louise on the web site.
I have not been able to confirm who his parents were- his death certificate does not list it nor does the obit that was in the local paper. The 1860 census shows Luther Clark with an Abner S. Irish and Hannah but he is not with them on the 1850 census- so what their relationship is one can only guess. I had the opportunity to vist the Irish web site and found him their and they had Montraville Irish and mother as Louisa Platt. Georgia Irish is buried by the Erickson family grave site here in Rockford Illinois. Family lore is that she was a little crazy she had atleast 4 husbands. She divorced her husband Lewis and is buried by her last husband one Herbert Ford. Georgia L Irish Erickson is my great grandmother on my mothers side. I have been trying to find more pictures of Georgia and I hope Luther but the family member that I believe have is being difficult. I will keep on trying. It would be great if Georgia looked like the Irish- then perhaps via looks we can even speculate more- HA. I found some info on Luther's civil war record on ancestry but not alot. after he died Theresa remarried but chosed to be buried in the Irish family plot. Someone but I have no idea placed a newer larger family headstone on the grave site and I am in the process of trying to find the grave stone maker and to see if they have any record. I hope this pans out. the other info I got off of roots but how relable this is I do not know. I haven't had the opportunity to search the 1850's census with Montraville listed to see if Luther Clark is with them or not-he would have been 11 at the time and perhaps this would then lead one to believe that Montraville is indeed his father and the Abner S. Irish would be a relative of some sort- but who knows- if you have any other ideas please share. Thanks for all of the info that you have provided so far it has opened up some more can of worms that perhaps can provide some answers.

Shelly
