Hi My grandfather's name was also John Nicholas Irvin. He was born in Boston, married in Boston, had 4 sons in Boston and was a Merchant Marine. I have heard he had another family in NY, possibly a son and a daughter. Contact me if you have discovered anything..I have just started my search.

The above was furnished to me by David Irvin, a descendant of the William Irvin listed at the top. I am not sure about the documentation. William enlisted in the Continental Line in Bedford county, Virginia, fought the Brits for four years, and settled in Stueben county, New York. I personally believe this William and my gggg-grandfather Christopher were orphaned brothers back in Virginia. As far as I can tell, William never returned to Virginia but lived out his life in New York. Maybe your Abrahams are listed here. I have not followed William's descendants but I know they moved to southern Illinois. I chat occasionally with two descendants of this family and our DNA matches are very close. Edwin Dean Irvin.

Ok. Here's what I've Discovered.
There was an Abraham Irvin, who lived in Hamilton County, IL (born in Virginia, late 1780-1790's), and a Abraham (Abram) P. Irvin, who lived in Saline (Gallatin) County, IL (born in New Jersey or New York, 1810). Some people have confused these two as the same person, but according to Census Records, there are entries for both, in the SAME Census, but different Locations (specifically 1860 Census). Can anyone confirm this, and have any PROVABLE info on Abraham P Irvin, and HIS linage from New Jersey or New York?

CHILLICOTHE: Everett T. Irvin, 80, of Chillicothe, died 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at his son's residence following an extended illness.

He was born July 20, 1931, in Chillicothe, Ohio to Everett A. L. and Vallie V. Bragg Irvin.

He retired from C.S.X. Railroad where he had worked as a Brakeman and a Conductor for over 43 years.
Everett was Chairman of the local union for 33 years.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting and boating.

He was the loving husband of the former Marilyn L. Hertenstein whom he married on August 19, 1950 who survives; also surviving are children, Michael L. (Sharon K.) Irvin, Sharon L. (Michael E.) Proehl and Timothy R. (Maranda R.) Irvin, all of Chillicothe; grandchildren, Kimberly (Matt) Stark, Karen Black, Kristal (Matt) Spetnagel, Dustin (Holly) Proehl, Stacey (Stephen) Hart, Emily Irvin and Allison Irvin; 13 great grandchildren; brothers, Rodney (Mary) Irvin, Larry (Connie) Irvin, Marlin (Delores) Irvin, all of Chillicothe, Carroll (Wanda) Irvin, of Kingston, Clark (Elaine) Irvin, of Bainbridge, Ohio and Dwight Irvin, of Williamsport; sisters, Carlene Baker and Gayle (Rick) Clary, both of Chillicothe; sisters-in-law, Alma "Billie" Hertenstein, of Londonderry and Janet (Roger) Boggess, of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Given my ruddy complexion, size, and hubris, I was all prepared to buy into Irvin mythology.... Particularly since my two lineages are of Bruce and Irvin (my paternal side)... I was ready to find I was Scots royalty or something..

Imagine my surprise when I found my ancestors from the Irvin & Bruce clan go back to France circa 1600... (Then the trail dies)... I guess that's where the mythology comes in... Who knows, the Normans might have created a stir on the islands before settling back into France... C'mon, it's a nice fantasy...

Of course my maternal side (Easter & Stonecypher) goes to Germany... What a drag.

I do know my Appalachian hillbilly cousins learned to make whiskey somewhere... Was this my Scotch dynasty I could fantasize about?

These message boards are awash in undocumented, unsubstantiated, romantic drivel about the origins of the Irwin/Irvine/Irvins. If you are using the old vanity histories as your primary sources, you are deluded. Prime examples of genealogical rubbish is “Irvines & Kin”, The Book of the Agnews” and the “Paul Irwin book. Too many “experts” use these very flawed publications to perpetuate absolute mythology about about the very early Irvine families. Much of it is an obsession with proving descent from either the House of Drum or the House of Bonshaw. There is absolutely no primary source proof tying any of the American Irvines to any line in Scotland. It is all just speculation and wishful thinking. Not genealogy. I do not believe any of it: The fabled Alexander of the Trysting Tree; The McDowell stories; the George and Ann; The Wylies, the Shaws of Ballygally Castle, Christopher of Flodden Field; yadda-yadda. Americans are taking a five century, undocumented leap of logic when they try to tie their immigrant ancestors to these old stories. I don’t really care, but all this misinformation obscures and overwhelms the nuggets of real research that is posted on the boards. Give us all a break and contribute some primary source discoveries. Not cockeyed stories from old “histories” written in the 1890’s by overzealous heirs.

William Irvin, of Zerbe, died Monday morning at Hagerstown Hospital, Hagerstown, Md., where he was admitted after being stricken while visiting his son, John, at 1217 Sherman Ave., Hagerstown.

A native of Frackville, Mr. Irvin was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Irvin. He had been a resident of Zerbe for the greater part of his life. He was employed as a miner until his retirement 12 years ago. His wife, the former Theresa Bettinger, died 15 years ago. Mr. Irvin was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Zerbe.

Surviving in addition to his son, John are one daughter, Mrs. James Sherrick, Edinboro, Erie County and three grandchildren.

Funeral Thursday morning from Ritzel Funeral Home, Minersville. Mass in Sacred Heart Church. Interment in the parish cemetery, Zerbe.

Hello, my name is Kristi Kommer (Irvin) and Alex Culberton Irvin is my grandfather's grandfather. What information did you need on him and Rachel Clemson? I have some information on his parents and siblings and some information on her family. As well as information on some of Alex and Rachel's children, especially Reuben which is my grandfather's father. I've found there are a lot of people out there related to Alex Irvin.

Don't know if you had this info or not. Arch's birth doesn't match up but it does list Monroe, KY as inscription.

My Irvin family was also from KY via TN. These names do not seem familiar to me but if we dig deep enough we may find a connection. My Irvins were in the Barron/Monroe area. Here are some of the names in my line Dory (maybe Theodore), William, Archie, Isaac, and my grandfather's name was Lawrence b 1904 KY. I am seeking info on my gg-grandfather known as Kit Irvin. I hear that he was born in TN but later moved to Western KY in the Calloway, Graves, and Trigg Counties area. He married Parthena Williams and fathered Finis James Irvin (1883-1960) and Ida Irvin. This as not his first marriage. I am needing any info that can connect my great-grand father, Finis James Irvin (1883-1960), to his father who was known as Kit Irvin. It is important to note that "Kit" is short for Christopher. Kit was born in TN but lived and died in western KY. He was married to Parthena Williams (1840's-1932) who is the mother of Finis, however I am sure Kit was married at least once before. I was told Finis had some half brothers named Charlie and Evans Irvin. Finis, Parthena, and the half brothers are all from Calloway, Graves and Trigg Counties in Western KY. Any info that can connect Kit to Finis Irvin, Evans Irvin, Charlie Irvin, and Parthena Williams will be greatly apprciated.

I am a descendent of James P Irvin. His daughter Effie Irvin Pumphrey was my grandmother. I have been searching for James T's parents also. I had not heard your legend. I had been told that Susan C's maiden name was GLASS and that she came from Tennessee but have not been able to find any proof.
