Lots of your comments look like they connect to what I am researching. I have David Erwin, b. 1814 in Ireland; married Ellen Arnoff from Scotland; settled in Ontario, Canada; had a son John Erwin who was born 20 Sep 1839 in Ontario. Went in 1844 to Gennessee area of New York. John served in Civil War. 1868, John went to Baker City area of Oregon; married Ada Ann Brown; had about ten kids there. died there abt 1920.
I am looking for father/mother of David Erwin. Do you have any connection for me...thanks a bunch, Willard

Re: Are (John Erwin & Mary Hoge) Archibald Irwin's (married to Elizabeth Fletcher) parents?

Hi Tammy,
We have talked before but it has been a while like 2 or 3 years. I have been spending all of my time searching for Archibald's family and ancestors.

I have found his brother and sister. I am in correspondence with my 5th cousin who descends from Arthur (Archibald's older brother b.1766) and my 5th cousin once removed who descends from Mary (Archibald's younger sister b. 1770).

I also know that Archibald's father is William Erwin most likely born in Northern Ireland. He settled as a young man in Cumberland Twp, York Co, PA in the 1740's or possibly earlier. There is a court document to verify that his land was improved as early as 1741.

William was jurer of York Co Grand Jury in 1751.

In 1762 William Erwin was taxed. This was the earliest known tax assessment list for Cumberland Twp, York Co, PA. He had a brother James Erwin, also a John Ervin and William Ervin were also living on William's property and taxed. In 1768 the next known tax assessment, only William and James were taxed. John and the other William had left the area.

Sometime around 1767, James bought property adjoining to William's land from a David Greer. James received a Patent Deed in 1767 for his land and continued to pay taxes until 1782 when he and his wife Mary sold his land to Peter Piper.

In July 1770, William was a viewer for the Quarter Sessions of the York Court for a road from Shippensburg to the Widow Black's. The Widow Black's property was next to William's. This road is basically the old US 30.

William paid taxes until his death in 1774. His widow Rachel Morrison Erwin continued to pay taxes until 1782. Her family lived in the same township as William. Her father was Archibald Morrison. Archibald Irwin most likely was named for him.

The estate of William was put in trust for his children when his wife remarried a Mr. McCoy. The three under aged children were given guardians, Mr. Spears and Joseph Morrison, Jr (Rachel's cousin) according to Orphan's Court documents. Joseph was put in charge of the trust. In charge of the trust for the children, he applied for the Warrant, got the survey and received a Patent Deed for William's land the year before the children were able to sell the land. In July, 1789 when Archibald turned 21 the land was sold.

Archibald also married Elizabeth Fletcher in January, 1789. Elizabeth also had grown up in Cumberland Twp, York Co, PA. Her father Charles Fletcher and mother Esther purchased land in that county around 1767. Elizabeth and Arthur were at the selling of the land to Peter Piper who had purchased James land back in 1782.

In November, 1789 Archibald and Elizabeth purchased land in Allegheny Co (which is now Washington Co) southwest of Pittsburgh along Chartiers Creek. In January, 1790 William (their first child) was born.

The year of 1789 must have been the year that all three of William's children moved on with their lives. Mary married John Stewart in Ohio Co, VA in 1790. This is where Wheeling, WV is now. She would have been 20.

Arthur lived in Ohio County VA (now West VA) between 1789 and 1800. Arthur married Ann Morrison (his 2nd cousin and the daughter of Joseph Morrison, Jr who was Arthur's guardian). After Arthur and Ann were married they moved across the river to Belmont Co, OH.

I have put together a scenario based on my family tradition and talking to each of my cousins for each of William and Rachel Erwin's children. I have speculated who raised them and how they met their spouses and ended up living where they did in the 1790's. I can't prove all of it with documents. But it makes for interesting reading if you are interested.

Now I am spending all of my time looking for William's father. Some of the candidates are: William and Ellendor Erwin who lived in Pennsboro Twp, Lancaster Co, PA; the father (Joseph Erwin who lived in Ireland) of William Erwin b.1717 who lived in Burk Co, PA and was brother to Col. Arthur Erwin; and most recently I am interested in James Erwin who had a wife Mary Irvine and he died 1743 in Augusta Co, VA.

All of these men have children William, James, and John who would have been about the age that my William Erwin would have been. I am using the Clan Irwin DNA study to help guide me. I do know that I am finding matches to all of these men that I have listed. I just need to find a paper trail that fits.

Hope you have enjoyed my search and studies of the past 3 years. I am determined to crack this nut! I feel Archibald has been out there all of these years and no one seems to know who he is. Now we know his father and mother. This is a start.

Your cousin,

Anne Irwin
zurwin@macatawa.com
I cannot seem to trace the Thomas Dowling who was part of the 13th Infantry Regiment in Ohio. Did Thomas H.
Irwin Family: Ireland>NJ>PA>IL

I have just seen your posting of 13 Nov 2011. Since this is also my line, I have some corrections and comments to make, and questions to ask.

1. You do not give dates for Washington Irwin (s/o Jared Pinkney Irwin). If you do not already have them, he was born 7 Feb 1843 in West Nantmeal, Chester, PA; d 8 Feb 1935 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL. (My line is through his brother, Luther Wesley Irwin.)

2. You show Jared Pinkney Irwin (f/o Washington) as born in 1820. He was actually born in 1810 (13 Mar). This date is given by JPI in his diary, which is part of the Irwin Family Collection at the Illinois State Historical Library.

3. You show Jared Pinkney Irwin as s/o Jared P. Irwin. I am certain he was s/o Israel Irwin (1762-1827). In his diary Jared Pinkney refers often to his brothers and sisters by name, all of whom were the children of Israel Irwin.

4. You show George Irwin born 1892 in Londonderry. This is obviously a typo and should be 1692. Do you have documentation? I have his dob as 1680-1685, but have no proof.

5. You show George as s/o Jared Irwin b 1673 Londonderry, d 1720 in NJ. I show Jared b 1655 in Londonderry and d 1690 also in Londonderry; but, my source is hazy. If you have documentation for the dates and that Jared emigrated to NJ, I would appreciate knowing that.

6. Final question. You show Jared (1673-1720) as s/o William, b 1655 and d 1690. I show Jared and William as brothers, both of them s/o of James Irvine (1622-1658). Since the dates I have for Jared and William are the same, it does make me wonder! Again, documentation?

It has been years since I have actively researched the Irwins; I was just surfing around to see if there is anything new when I found your message. By the way, most of my information on the NJ-PA-IL Irwin family came from the research of Arthur Irwin of Springfield, IL, (a grandson of Jared Pinkney Irwin), the JPI diary mentioned above, and "A Historical Account of the Trago/Trego Family" by Jane Schaul Lutz. Arthur Irwin's materials are also part of the Irwin Family Collection of the IL State Historical Library.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Theodocia Irwin

I was wondering if you are still researching William D. Irwin. He was my great-grandfather and I have obtained some information on him - sorry still haven't found out who his parents were. Theodocia still remains a mystery. However, I do know he had a sister, Laura Ann Irwin Alexander Tyson. She was born about 1833 and first married O. P. (I think Oliver) Alexander and had a daughter about 1851 named Harriet. I am going to Alexandria, La. to research this on my vacation in May. Bill was given tutorship over Harriet and was listed as her natural uncle. Old docket #584 Rapides Parish. Laura was widowed and then married Hamilton Tyson and 4 other children. Laura died in 1864 in her early 30's. Laura had a Martha J. Irwin living with her. Martha married Seldon Parish in Colfax in 1866. If you are still doing research, I would like to hear from you.

I am trying to find my family. My Great Grandfather was Bartley Irwin who married Mary MacDonough in Glaway. My Grandfather was Martin Irwin born in 1878 in Galway and came to the US on his father's papers in the early 1880's. They came to Boston and that is where most of the family has resided ever since. They are a Catholic family. Any suggestions about going beyond my Great Grandfather would be greatly appreciated.

Tom Irwin
St. Louis, MO tirwincp@gmail.com

The one is of Agnes which would be your Great Grandmother and the other picture is of Alexander Irwin who would be your great Uncle.
For my family My Great Grandfather was Thomas, He married Eva Jalbert and they had one son Louis John. Thomas passed away in 1927 my grandfather was 9 at the time. So Thomas and Andrew are brothers. So your father and my grandfather Louis John Irwin would have been 1st cousins. You and my father would be 2nd cousin so I guess that would make us 3rd cousins I think.
I am aways look for more infomation to add but at this point this is all I have.
It is nice to find someone else looking into information.

Janet

Irwins in Feenagh/Limerick,1800's to Chicago+New Orleans. Australia connection?

oral history connected me to my Irwin roots in New Orleans and back to Feenagh, County Limerick, Ireland however missing the Australia connection to all this.

my Great-Great Grandmother, Johanna (nee Irwin) Murphy and her sister came in the mid 1800's to Chicago and their brothers and their uncle to New Orleans.

NOTE: oral history states one went to Australia and became wealthy from gold and either then went to New Orleans or Ireland to New Orleans to Australia or Ireland to Australia. see below if any seems familiar to your tree and if yes please reply.

my great-great grandmother's sibs are:

Johnanna (nee Irwin) Murphy (herself)
B. about 1832
D. 1902 in Chicago at age 70
M. Daniel Murphy
there children's names were: Ellen Scanlon, Cornelius, William, Ed, Deniel, Barthemes, John, Johanna and my great grandmother Mary Ann Keegan B. 1860 in Chicago, died 1946 she was the only one of her sibs to have children that went on to have children.
NOTE: I have a photo of here too

Mary (nee Began) Irwin
B.
D. (in Chicago)
M. John Bigane

William Irwin
he remained in Limerick per death notices of his sibs, there alive beyond 1917

Michael Irwin
B. about 1843 in Limerick
D. 1917 age 74 in New Orleans
M. Mary Dore (died 1914, perhaps born in Limerick too per one of her death notices)
(micheal came to the U.S. as a boy)
they had 2 sons and 5 daughters named Mamie, Anna M. Margaret, Josie, Ed M.(had 5 kids), John and Nellie
NOTE: I have a photo of him too

Edward Irwin Sr.
B. about 1848 in New Castle West, Limerick, Ireland
D. 9/14/1904 age age 56 in New Orleans
M. Johanna Dore in 1878 (Mary Dore's sister! and again per death notices say the sister's were born in Limerick Ireland)
she died 4/11/1915
Edward immigrated to Chicago in 1869 and 3 years later to New Orleans (where his uncle Patrick Irwin was)
they had 5 boys (named William (no kids), Johanna died age 7 mos, Ed Jr. (no kids), John J. (no kids died age 46 in NYC on 6/21/27), Michael P (no kids in Buffalo NY in 1927 and lived in Chicago in 1938), and Joseph J. died age 5.
NOTE: I have a ;photo of him too

possible other sibs:
Margaret Irwin
Joseph Irwin
John Irwin

Their (paternal) uncle was:
Patrick Irwin
B. about 1800 or 1810 (an obitituary said born 1810 but that does not make sense if died in 1878 at age 78) in Charleville Cork, Ireland
D. 1878 at age 78 (died 4/25/1878) in New Orleans with an estate of 3 million dollars and the first president of Hibernia Bank in New Orleans.
M. Catherine (nee ?)
he immigrated to U.S. in 1829 and to New Orleans by 1832.
NOTE: I have a photo of him too

Do you know anything about the Irish Irwins from Lenerevagh, Glenamoy Co Mayo? John Irwin (from where?) was granted the land in 1707 and the land remained in Irwin hands until the early 1900's.Some of my relations still live there. The Irwins who held the land seemed to have lived in Claremorris originally (George, Thomas Robert, Edward.) There were George Irwins as far back as 1804 in the Claremorris area of Mayo Irelan but I have no idea where they came from before thaT. i know there were Irwins in Sligo (Col John Irwin) and In Roscommon but so far have not been able to establish any connection with the Mayo Irwins. Can you help?
Edward George died in Rochester, Kent,England on 29th March 1869 though he was born in Ireland. My great grandfather George Irwin was born about 1852 (d 1919) but I can't find any record of his birth. He had one daughter Sarah born 1899 Church of Ireland who married Michael Irwin also of Glenamoy son of John Irwin. My father George Irwin was born 1919 in Glenamoy and so both his parents were Irwins.
Have you any clues that might help?
Ann

Great Aunt Annie (o'riely)Irwin born 1888 (she was born in Camlachie and family moved to the Sault around 1900), married to leonard o'riely. It always struck me as odd when i would visit Irwin O'rieily that his name should have been Irwin Irwin but as I aged the pieces fell together. They had 3 children all of whom I have talked to in the past.
Annie comes from a family of 10 children, who are my great uncles and aunts and I have limited info on, but some.
If this seems to fit please contact me at my email address

William Irwin

I am looking for information on two different individuals in my family both named William. The first is my great-grandfather, who is married to his wife, Ethel (maiden name also Irwin). The second is his father, William Snr. Along with my great-grandfather, he also had ten other children - Thomas, James, Francis, Annie, Isabella, Mary, Robert, Emily, Archie and I believe a second Thomas.

As far as I am aware, my great-grandfather definitely lived in Northern Ireland for some of his life. I presume that the rest of his family also lived here in Ireland. If anyone has any information on either

According to my father his father was a rr man. But his name was Charles Irwin. The reason I am replying to this is the Butler connection. I have in my possesion an old phot from around the turn of the 19/20 century of three young men. The Names are Frank and Ed Butler and George Reed.

If you are still there, and think there may be a connection let me know.

in my earlier reply I forgot to mention there is a "story" in my family that Mr. Irwin was divorced. And his first wife lived close enough to them that when Maude gave birth to my father she came over to help her.

The Charles Irwin in our family married Maude Hughes (nee Jackson) in March 1917 in Ardmore, OK. He could have worked for a railroad at one time, and possibly ran a restaurant. But our (Mike Erwin's and mine) supposedly died before March 24 1918. Maude, had remarried by August of 1918.

I doubt they are the same Charles Irwins. I am find Charles Irwin, even Charles Edward Irwin is a very popular name.
