S E (Betty) Isom

S E Isom was my gx2 grandmother and I know very little. She married J D Bullington on 12/11/1884 in Lamar county, TX. They had 2 children, my g great gramdmother Eula and my gx2 uncle James G Bullington. In 1891, J D married Della Loughmiller and my thoughts are that S E died between 1887 (when James was born) and 1891. She is listed as Betty Isom on the death records of both Eula and James and the marriage lists her as S E Isom and that her birthplace was Alabama. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all,
I am looking for information regarding Helen Jane Isom and her family. She lived from about 1934 to July 2010 most likely in Tennessee and Texas. All I know for sure are the names of her children and husband. Her children were Terri, James, and Holly. Her husband's name was Donald James Grose. I'm afraid I don't have any information on her more than that. Anything would help. If you have any information you can reply to this message or send me an email to jjg0102@gmail.com

I've had the same issue with Elijah and tying him to Bolen. According to the McMinn/Meigs Census, Bolin lived with a Charles who was married to Judy. I wonder if Elijah's first or middle name was Charles. Or if it is wishful thinking. Even though Elijah was supposed to die in 1850, he isn't on any of the Census records for that time period. Why would Bolen be living with Charles during his childhood if his father was Elijah. Until I see the actual evidence, I'm not willing to accept Elijah as Bolen's dad. This leaves us with the question of when they came over the mountains.

I have a lot of stuff on my tree that might be of interest--I've just started up again, so I'll keep adding to it.

Looking for any info for Pearl Isom listed in Tangipahoa Parish, LA in the 1920 census together with Charles Isom (Charlie)as her spouse. They had a daughter named Ruth born abt 1918. According to my records, he later married Ida Freeman in 1923. I do not find a divorce record for Pearl and Charlie. I believe they had been married in Colorado. Possibly divorced in that state? I also can not find a death record for Pearl. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I have searched for many years for anything about Pearl and Ruth with nothing but a deadend. Please help if you can. Thank you!

Jasper P. Isom ,1846 -1938, TN>IL

Thanks to the volunteer on the Franklin County IL List who shared this old obit. Jasper's father was Bolin Isom of Tennessee. J.P. was my father's great uncle.~Paula~
``````````````
per Obits & Tidbits 1937-1938 (PULLIAM) pg 49-50, 21 Jan 1938;
With the death of James P. ISOM (I believe this should be Jasper Paul Isom ) of Sesser, John M. MARTIN of Osage, remains the only surviving civil War Veteran.
Mr. ISOM died yesterday, aged 91y 3m 7d.Burial will take place at Horse Prairie Cemetery.
The following children survive: J. D. ISOM, Bennie ISOM, and Mrs. Agnes DENNIS, all of Sesser; William ISOM, Denver, Colo.; John ISOM, Kincaid, Illinois; Mrs. Anna SHERIFF, DuQuoin,Illinois; and Mrs. Allie BLYTHE, Tamaroa, Illinois.
Mr. ISOM was born in McMinn Co., Tennessee 13 Oct. 1846. One year later his family moved to Meigs Co., Tenn. In 1885 he came to Illinois and settled in Jefferson County, three miles north
of Sesser. Later he moved to Sesser where he had lived for the past 27 years.
As the troublous clouds of discord that resulted in the Civil War gathered year after year the people in Meigs County, as in countless other counties, divided into groups, who sympathized either with the North or the South. The ISOMs believed in the Union and were definitely anti-slavery. There were few of these and were greatly out-numbered in Meigs County. This led to much personal trouble between neighbors.
At the earliest outbreak of the war, the older ISOM brothers,Henry, Bill and Frank, joined the union army. Dick, the fourth of a family of
six boys, was only 15 years of age. He could not go. Some time later a neighbor was trying to force his father to join with the south and their quarreling grew into a fight and while this was going on, Dick, with all of his might of 16 years, threw a stone, which knocked the neighbor unconscious. Then to keep from being killed he hid in caves for two weeks. He was carried food by his father who sent him by night to join the northern army.
In 1863 he met a recruiting officer for the Union army at McMinn, Tenn., who
offered to mark him down as old enough to join the army and send him to Carthage where he could join others like himself. He accepted the offer and went to Carthage where he was sent with many others to Murfreesboro and placed in training for the cavalry.
While there in training he watched the great battles of that name. On Christmas Eve in 1863 he took his place to live with more seasoned soldiers and started out with the army on the Meridian Ridge campaign. He was engaged in many battles, some of the more important being at Corinth,
Meridian, West Point, and Oklona. At the last named his horse was shot from under him and he was wounded in the arm. He participated in the second battle at Fort Donelson and in many other engagements.
While at Athens, Alabama he was sent by Sergeant John WILLIAMS to carry a message to the commander of a portion of the army stationed at Sulphur Tressie - now known as Sulphur Springs - a distance of about eight miles. It was very dark at night, and before he realized it he rode into a large detachment of General Forrest's army. All at once he was surrounded by mounted men who ordered him to throw up his hands. He did so and his arms and ammunition were taken from him. Just then a lieutenant rode up, saw the commotion and a Union uniform and shot Mr. ISOM in the back. The bullet passed entirely through the body. The shot alarmed the pickets of armies and firing began all along the line. In the confusion Mr. ISOM clung to his horse's neck and turned him around and escaped back to the place from where he had started.
Early the next morning the battle began in earnest and the Union Army was forced to surrender. About 3,000 cavalrymen, including Mr.
ISOM, were taken prisoners. He was taken to Cahaba and placed in a prison under command of a Capt. WORTH, where he remained for about six months before being paroled. He was taken to Vicksburg,and later to Jefferson Barracks at St. Louis. He was cared for there until 11 Aug. 1865, when he was discharged and sent home. He arrived home on the 22nd after a tedious journey by train, stage mule and on foot. His wound was still unhealed.
Other soldiers were coming home, many of them from the southern army.Friction was inevitable. After six months at home, Mr. ISOM came to Illinois
where he stayed one year. He then went back to Tennessee and stayed until 1885. Then he came to Illinois where he remained. He was married to Miss Agnes Adline FORE 13 Oct. 1867, also of Tennessee. Of this union there were eleven children born, seven of whom are still living.
```````````````````````````
J.P.

Reading this thread, there seems to be some confusion about two different men each named Thomas M. ISOM who were both about the same age and each married in 1902.

1) Thomas Martin ISOM was born Dec 1872 in Stokes County, North Carolina, son of Charles Columbus ISOM and Lucy Laura WESTMORELAND. Charles was born 1851 in Grayson County, Virginia. This Thomas M. ISOM married 27 Feb 1902 in Alleghany County, North Carolina to Nancy ISOM born May 1872 in Grayson County, daughter of Minitree ISOM and Nancy Elizabeth HALE

2) Thomas Monroe ISOM was born 10 Jun 1874 in Grayson County, Virginia, son of Minitree ISOM and Nancy Elizabeth HALE. This Thomas M. ISOM married 27 Oct 1902 to Mrs. Hattie Lillian ISOM, nee THORN. She had first been married in 1895 to Fielden ISOM who was born Jan 1843 Grayson County, Virginia son of John ISOM and Sarah Jane JONES. Hattie THORN was born 15 May 1875, daughter of James THORN and Nancy DUNIVAN.

I have spent over a dozen years researching and documenting the descendants of John ISOM who died Feb 1830 in Grayson County, Virginia. The results of my research can be found here:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&d...

Re: Looking for parents of Nellie Louise Isom b. 6 Mar 1882 TN

I think your Nellie Isom was my great grandmother. Information I have is that her real name is Ellen Louise Isom Brown (Nellie) was born March 6, 1882 and died Sept 6, 1950. My twin sister and I were not quite 4 months old when she died. She was one of 12 children. I have all their names. She was maried to John Abernathy Brown on March 23, 1902.
they lived in Bedford county. He died on Aug 31, 1930 in a hit and run auto accident. Her father was Joe B. Isom (B July 25, 1842, D. Dec 16, 1905. Her Mother was Mollie Ellen Goodwin Isom (b. Feb 19, 1854, d. Mar 2, 1933. Mollie and Joe are both buried at the Holt Cemetery in Haley, TN near Normandy, TN. Nellie and John had four children: Joe, Callie (my grandmother) Clifton and Louise. Nellie's mother (Methodist) made a christening gown and slip for Nellie's children. I have a picture of Callie in the gown sitting in Nellie's lap with 2 year old Joe at her side with husband John and his father, David Francis Brown. My twin sister's first grand child, born in England, was christened in this same christening gown in the Episcopal church on March 21. Nellie was her great, great , great grandmother and Mollie was her great, great , great, great grandmother. My mother lived with Nellie as a teenager and her name is Louise. I hope this is a legitimate inquiry. Lezette

Date: March 22, 1903
Location: Oregon
Paper: Oregonian

PASSING OF A LINN COUNTY PIONEER

John Isom, a pioneer citizen of Linn County, who died last week at the country home of his son, J.D. Isom, near Peterson’s Butte, was born in 1827. He was a pioneer of 1853, having come to Oregon from his native state, Virginia. He was closely identified with the early growth of Linn County and the City of Albany. Besides being a large owner of real property in the county, Mr. Isom owned considerable property in Albany, and was for many years proprietor of the Red Crown Flouring Mills in Albany. In this latter capacity he became one of the most widely known men in Linn county. During the panic of 1893 Mr. Isom lost most of his property. He is survived by a wife and ten children. The children are: Mrs. Skinner, of Sodaville; Mrs. Scott Ward and Mrs. Monroe Ward, of Albany; Mrs. E.J. Lanning, of Tacoma; Mrs. F.H. Pfeiffer, of Albany; Dave Isom, of Halsey; J.D. Isom and John Isom, Jr., of Alaska

Posting for research purposes,
Eellitta

It's complicated. The answer is "Almost certainly," assuming you mean Thomas M. Isom, born 1875 and died 1951, both in Grayson County, VA, son of Minitree Jones Isom and Nancy Hale.

I can't connect specifically Thomas M. Isom, born 1875, and my ancestor Spencer Isom, born 1811. Since all those Isoms were from the New River Valley area of Grayson County, VA and Ashe County, NC, I'd guess that Spencer was a cousin several times removed (due to the 64-year-difference in their birth dates) to Thomas M. Isom.

Incidentally, I have the name of Thomas M. Isom's wife as Hattie, but her maiden name is unknown. If you have that information, I'd appreciate knowing her name.
