I'm working on entering a memorial on FAG for Martha Ives Smalley, daughter of Jacob & Sophia IVES (as a volunteer) for Honeoye Falls Cemetery (where she is buried with her daughter, Clara Smalley Ross, wife of George) and found Jacob's obit in the Rochester D&C, Dec. 13, 1901, page 4:
Jacob Ives, a veteran of the Civil war, and for the last ten years a resident of Batavia, died at his home, in the rear of No. 28 Jefferson avenue, Batavia, yesterday morning, after an illness of ten days from the grip, aged 89 years. He is survived by a widow and these sons and daughters: Mrs. Martha Smalley, of Rochester; Mrs. Mary Colbert, of Honeoye Falls; Nelson and George Ives, of Honeoye Falls, and William, of Batavia.

Hi Windy, It has been a while since we touched bases. I had to take a break from the Ives' family because of these brick walls, but you so graciously have really shed some light and SOME HOPE on my quest. Do you have a source that John Lent Ives was the son of Lent Ives? I have a feeling that the Lent Ives buried in Orleans County might be John Lent Ives. That would seem to make sense since you are sure that John Lent was married to Lucretia. That would put some pieces of the puzzle together. Would you happen to have the birth and death dates for John Lent Ives? My Merritt didn't move to Orleans County until August 1850, I'm trying to connect him to a relative who he knew there.

Hopefully cuzin Lynn in Ohio

I do have an Alexander Ives, 15 Feb 1828 Lafayette, Indiana - 17 Jul 1911 Centralia, Washington. His father was Orsen Ives and his mother Mary "Polly" Puderbaugh. He was married to Mary Deeter and had at least 12 children. He traces all the way back to William Ives (1607-1648), family progenitor.
And, he's my 4th cousin, 4 times removed to boot.

If you would like any details, I can be contacted at: davidives@ivescentral.com

David

I don't believe my Jacob Ives is the one who deserted. The info I have shows he mustered in Company K, 13th infantry on 9/27/1862 and out on Apr 20, 1864. I do not know where he is buried but he is not on the 1870 census with his wife, Sophia, and daughter, Mary (my ancestor), who was still living in Mendon. I would love any additional info on him. He is a brick wall for me. I am really interested in his parents.

He deserted at Albany in 1862 but I can't find out where he was buried. Do you have that info. I found a Jacob Ives buried in the Bath National Cemetery in Bath, NY but for some reason I didn't think that was the right person.
Diane Ham
Mendon Town Historian

Hi I am trying to trace the birth of my ancestor William Ives. He married Elizabeth Jacob in Terrington St Clement, Norfolk in 1816 but the parish records state he was of that parish. I have been to the Fenland Museum in Wisbech this week and studied the parish records but cannot find he was born there. Can anyone help please. As far as I can ascetain he went from Terrington to Walpole St Andrew where his son Jonathan was born and married an Elizabeth Dixie.

I am trying to find info regarding Arthur Ives b.1908, d, 1973, I believe. He had to two children with Hilda Annie/Anne Percy in the 1940's but believe that they never married as he was already married? He worked for Greenhams concrete in his later years as a yardsman. The only info we have is that he may have been Catholic and he may have had children with his wife. He served in WW2, and believe was in the Dunkirk retreat? Do you have an Arthur Ives in your tree? There is a photo of him on my tree. I think he must have left his wife fairly early on as the first of his children with Hilda was born in 1944.

I don't know. But Thomas IVES was supposedly the father of Martha IVES who m. William BROCKETT at New Bern on 1 Oct 1771. I have never seen a source for that claim, though. I have the 1750 will of a Thomas IVES of Currituck Co. and the 1779 will of William IVES of Craven and neither names Martha (my ancestor). The 1790 estate of John IVES does, however, name William BROCKETT. In 1895 descendants of Martha (IVES) BROCKETT had an attorney write a letter asking for information about Thomas IVES, their ancestor naming Martha BROCKETT as his only heir and saying he "died in London about AD 1846 with a large deposit in the London banks and a large estate in North Carolina." I have no idea if this is true; I've had British researchers look for an estate for him and nothing has turned up.

Barton Lewis

Dear Teresa,
Your Lineage as you state it won't work unless you substitute William's son John as the second generation (rather than William's other son, Joseph). With this substitution, your lineage from William to the present day will indeed work. I can provide you with what information I have from Isabelle G.
Re: Ives DNA

I had my uncle Lindsay Ives take the ancestry.com 46 marker DNA test. Only the paternal test can link male lines all the way back. If you look at the explanation of that on the DNA tab of ancestry, it explains it quite well. Female lines can only be taken back to coming from certain areas, but no exact lineage can be verified. That is because there is a part of the Y chromosome that gets passed on from generation to generation in males that can link father to son. Through ancestry.com message boards I found davidives@ivescentral.com who has kept and huge database of the ives and their families that they married into. Another person or two contacted me and one made a comparison chart of the 6 men or so who took the test who appear to match. I can email it to you if you give me you email, but I do not have a current subscription to ancestry.com so I can not message you back on this site at this time. Contact David Ives at the above email for in depth info. my email is vnail220@yahoo.com. Have fun with this. I did. I am 11th generation down from William. Again... contact David... he is the expert. Also there is a Richard Ives on the east coast who is writing a book about the Ives. I can obtain these emails if you write to me on mine. Valerie Nail (my mother was an Ives by birth).

He lived on a family farm in South Meriden that was called Diamond Hill Dairy. I'm not sure how many generations the farm goes back from him but I know that it was his father farm(who might also be Minor IVES, I'm not sure).

Anything you know would be helpful!!

Ethan M Ives
IVES Family DNA

Seven of us Ives males have compared our DNA, with interesting results. 4 match very well, 3 are each quite different. To learn why the differences we need more participants. If you are interested and know of a male Ives who has had a DNA test done, please get in touch with jothamw@aol.com. Hopefully we can help each other. Thanks.
