HI there,

I would love to email back and forth about Richard and Elizabeth. I wonder for example, did "Mary Ann Jacka Pearce" survive and go with them to the United States. Does she show up as one of their children (Mary?) She would have been born right about 1860. I wondered since Mary Ann Jacka (who was daughter of Mary Ann Blanchard and James Jacka) was staying with Richard and Elizabeth according to the 1861 census and was Elizabeth's sister it seems, whether they were calling her baby theirs on the census since Mary Ann was unmarried, or if perhaps there is some family record or letters that went between Mary Ann and her Michigan siblings and mother who lived with son George in Mich. Mary Ann was, as far as we know, the only sibling who stayed in Cornwall and later emigrated to Canada after her marriage to William Dobb. Anyhow, would love to chat more with both of you and to connect with other descendants. My email is wildlor@gmail.com

Hi there
My name is Laura and Elizebth and Richard Pearce are my grandmothers Grandparents. My records show that James Jacka and Maryanne Blanchard were married on Sept 24, 1826 in Parish Madron in Cornwall England. They had 7 Children. James,Elizebeth, William, Margrett, Tom, Eliza, and Mary. Elizebeth married Richard Pearce and they emmigrated to the US in 1863 on the Ship "City of New York. They settled in the upper Penninsula of Michigan and worked in the mines there. They had a daughter named Eliza who married John Dawe. These are my great Grandparents. There are many Elizas and Elizebeths that were called Eliza in the family and it is very confusing sometimes.

Hi Sally,

I would love to connect re the Jacka line. My gggrandmother was Eliza Thomas Jacka Dobb. Her mother was Mary Ann Jacka daughter of James Jacka and Mary Ann Blanchard. All her siblings and her mother emigrated to Northern Michigan about 1860. She stayed in Cornwall to have her daughter Eliza. They later emigrated to Quebec having married into the Dobb family. I am trying to find Eliza's father who the family kept quiet about. We think her middle name Thomas was somehow connected with her father's family.
Hi Marianne,

Not sure if there is a connection or not. I have Jacka and possibly Pearce relations. My grandmother's grandmother was Eliza Thomas Jacka Dobb, daughter of a Mary Ann Jacka. In the 1861 census, Mary Ann Jacka is listed as living with a Richard and Elizabeth Pearce. I think Elizabeth may have been a relation. They had a daughter Mary Ann Jacka Pearce aged 4 months in that census year....what is odd is that Mary Ann would have likely had Eliza by then and she would have been of a similar age. I have never learned who Eliza's father was though her middle name Thomas may have given us a clue. Anyway, it'd be lovely to connect and see how the trees may be connected. I am hoping to someday find her father through a descendant with knowledge, diaries or letters. Mary Ann was the only member of the family who stayed in Cornwall while all her siblings and mother went to Michigan. Her mother was Mary Ann Blanchard Jacka and I believe she lived to age 87 in the UP. Mary Ann ended up marrying when Eliza was 13 to the Dobb family (William Dobb) and Eliza married her step-brother John Dobb. They emigrated to Quebec (Sherbrooke) to the mines there. Eliza passed away in 1903 and John soon after. Mary Ann Jacka Dobb, her mother, moved to Butte, Montana with two of her sons. ....

Greetings everyone,
I am Patricia J Jacka, grandaughter of Clyde Jacka of Kansas. Clyde married Viola B Sinclair and moved to Washington state in the late 30's. They had 4 children: John, Jerry, Betty, and a fourth who died at a very young age. All three siblings currently reside in Lewis County Washington. Clyde passed away in 1980.
Jerry Jacka has three children: Sherry, Suzie, and Jim. Jim has no offspring that carry the Jacka name that I'm aware of.
I still carry the Jacka name and do not plan on changing it at the time of marriage. I am the only offspring of John Jacka and Geraldine Spencer. I now reside in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Betty has 4 offspring. One son and three daughters. None have chose to carry the Jacka name.
Just thought I would give you an update. Perhaps this will up your percentages in Washington state and now Utah.

Patricia J Jacka
fiespy@aol.com

Hi, My name is Lorena and I am in the states :-) I know where Mary Ann Jacka went, but my mystery is finding the father of her child Eliza Thomas Jacka. I can't as yet find a birth record for her. One gal who posted on the familysearch.org site lists the name of James Jacka as her father but that was apparently a custom to put the child's grandfather's name on the birth certificate if the father was not in the picture. We heard rumors that the name Thomas (her middle name) may have been the father's name...but I don't know if it is a surname or birth name. So, the mystery records would be relative to the birth of Eliza Thomas Jacka in Cornwall and whether there was a marriage or not. Eliza's mother (Mary Ann) married later and had two sons with William James Dobb. Eliza then married John Dobb, one of William's sons from his first marriage. The whole group emigrated to Canada and Butte, MT. Eliza was born in 1860 (14 Jan) in Gwennap and her mom Mary Ann in 1841 Breage.

Sorry this has taken so lomg but my Mom had to get out the family tree. Unfortunately, we have no records of any of the family living in Canada or Michigan. The Penhallegons and Jackas met in Mineral PointIn the 1880's. My grandmother, Mary Joan Jacka Penhallegon was born on Dec. 6, 1882 in Mineral Point,Wisconsin. Her father,William Jacka was born in Penzance, Cornwall sometime between 1850 and 1860. I have no information on my Great,Great Grandfather other than he was proboably born in the mid-late 1830.

Hope this helps a little.

Laura

Hi there,

I am not sure if you might be able to help me. My grandmother's grandmother was Mary Ann Jacka who came from Cornwall to Capleton in Canada and moved then to Butte. Her brothers and the rest of her family settled in Michigan and maybe Mineral Point. I am trying to find the name of the father of her first child Eliza Thomas Jacka. She may not have been married when she had Eliza but she was listed as a widow in one census I think. I came across one mention of her father as James Jacka but that was Mary Ann's father's name...so I don't know if it was an error or not. Eliza was born in 1860 (14 Jan) in Gwennap and her mom Mary Ann in 1841 Breage. I might have more details on Mary Ann's brothers and family that went to the midwest. Thanks and happy to share my info with anyone looking for more on this particular line.

Hi there,

I am studying my Jacka line out of Cornwall - to Canada and Michigan and Montana...

In particular, I am trying to find the father's name for Eliza Jacka daughter of Mary Ann Jacka. Mary Ann Jacka was married to William Dobb and her daughter Eliza married her step-brother John Dobb and they came to Capleton mines...Mary Ann lost one of her children there and moved to Butte. Mary Ann was supposedly widowed when she met and married William Dobb who was the husband of her close friend Susannah Glasson. Mary Ann moved in with Susannah to help her as she was chronically ill. William asked her to stay with her daughter Eliza after Susannah's death...but Mary Ann insisted on their marrying as she felt to adults of the opposite sex could not live in the same house unmarried. This may have influenced her pushing her daughter Eliza to marry John. Eliza's name is listed as Eliza Thomas Jacka but no one so far has indicated who her father was. Kathleen Stevens of Butte posted her father on one of the genealogy sites as a James Jacka...which I think is the name of Mary Ann's father. Eliza was born 14 Jan, 1860 in Gwennap. Her mom Mary Ann Jacka was born in 1841 in Breage. I have found Eliza and Mary Ann in the census a couple of places and Mary Ann's aunt Eliza Quintrell whom they lived with for a time but so far no record of a marriage for Mary Ann or a birth for Eliza. Since whomever the father was is part of the lineage it would be really great to learn the story. All Mary Ann's siblings went to Michigan I believe.

Thanks for any help and I am happy to share what I have about this line.

Hi Natalie Thornton from New Zealand. I'm Malcolm Rowe from Perth in WA and my interest in the Jackas stems from my mum, Irene Jacka.

Don't know of Abraham but am always interested in looking at leads just in case I find a squillionaire relly somewhere who might like to cross my palms with silver.

99% of Jackas came from Cornwall and I've no idea where the other 1% were conceived. Mum's family migrated from the St Buryan area (as a guide since distances between locations in Cornwall aren't massive) to Victoria en masse together with some Hollows, Tremewans and Bottrells, all relatives. Mum always claimed that some of 'her' Jackas also migrated to NZ and that Keith Holyoake was some sort of relative, although I've not been able to discover how. It may be a case of claiming connection to the famous; alternatively it might be so of course.

I'm not an Ancestry member but my email address is malrowe41@yahoo.co.uk. If you have any names and places of origin in Cornwall of Abraham's antecedents (or any Jacka descendents in Oz for that matter) perhaps you could email the details and I'll check them against the Vic/SA/WA folk that I know of and get back to you ASAP.
Best regards
Malcolm Rowe

Hi Wendy
I presume you are ROWE researching and I'm also presuming that you are researching Cornish Rowes? In my case I'm a Scottish Rowe and it is a common name throughout Celtic and Gaelic lands such as Britainy, Cornwall, Wales, Eire, Man, an Scotland. It is a derivitave of O'Ruadh, Rhuf, Rollo, Ruaidh et al and means in English RED, probably referring to hair colour or complexion.
The English, who belted the stuffing out of all and sundry in places like Scotland, had trouble with the pronunciation of words like RUAIDH which has a similiar sound to ROWE and since people were unable to spell in them there times they settled largely on ROWE / ROE.
JACKA has/had a vast spread once upon a time but in Cornwall it seems to have largely died out as a result of a high number of girls being born or migration. Cornish people were once expert in mining (largely tin) and troops of Jackas and others migrated to places like South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales to work in the mining areas.
It you are seeking Cornish ROWEs can't help you, if JACKAs I probably can.
Please let me know. Make your email subject matter ROWES/JACKAS because if I don't recognise the sender I presume spam and just delete it.
My email is: malrowe41@yahoo.co.uk and despite this address I live in Perth in Western Austral;ia.
Best wishes
Malcolm Rowe

I'm not too sure how much space I have here so I'll give you my email address: malrowe41@yahoo.co.uk - please use it to contact me and make the subject matter 'JACKA' so that I don't think it is spam and delete it.
My name is Malcolm Rowe & I live in Perth, Western Australia despite the email address.
My interest is that my mum's name was Irene Jacka and I have a fair amount of interest in and details of troops of Jackas in Oz. You are quite correct about Jago etc but the origins of the name are Britainy, a derivitive of JACQUES, this being a Celtic land and the probable origin of the Cornish, Welsh, some Irish and some Scots as the Celt expanded westwards back in the mists of time.
I'm probably running out of space here but would love to have a look at your info and share mine so please contact me when you can.
Best wishes
Malcolm

Hi,

Buryas Bridge, Penzance & Paul.

I am researching the line of James Ladner Rowe b1831, son of John Rowe & Maria Matthews, and grandson of Jacob Rowe (Aka Jacka, Jakeh, Jakah) and Bridget (nee Ladner?.

Other siblings include "Margeret" (unusual spelling?)and Mary Ann.

According to LDS, Jakah Rowe has another child called James Ladner Rowe with a lady called Elizabeth - who I suspect is a Ladner aswell.

So far it appears my ancestors were very fond of giving their offspring family surnames as middlenames.

I have also stumbled upon a "Benjamin Jacca Rowe" in the LDS searches, so I thought I would put these variations into the Community to see what came up!

I have just stumbled across your post, not realising Jacka is a surname aswell.

I would be grateful if in your travels, you have had any of these names crop up in your trees you could give me any pointers or concrete info!

Many thanks

Wendy

Jacka Surname DNA Study and Posting (2001) update

New email address: alan.jacka@verizon.net

Dear Jacka Family,
The most important news, deals with the possibility of identifying family members by using DNA testing. Anyone interested in participating in this Jacka DNA study? If so please contact me using the email address above.

With this posting I am updating my posting of 2001.

I am working on the Jacka family history. I would like to make contact with others in the Jacka family to share information. I have traveled to Cornwall England and have collected considerable information about the Jacka name and my direct Jacka Family. The Jacka name came from the Cornish names Jago, and Jacco. The more I get involved with this project, the more I feel that it is our generation’s obligation to document our heritage for our families. We are blessed with a name like Jacka that makes this project a great deal easier than a family name such as Jones or Smith. I have published a draft Jacka tree on Ancestry.com if you are interested, please email me and I will send you an invite to visit the site.

We have identified several Jacka clans (mobs) that originated in Cornwall England and immigrated to America in the 1800s. I have collected information / names of a number of these families. We have identified several areas across the country that seem to be the originating points for most American Jacka families.

Keweenaw County area, of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

Iowa County ( Mineral Point) and Lafayette Counties of Wisconsin

Pennsylvania

Have reason to believe individuals from Eastern Europe, Ukraine and Poland are using the Jacka name. Believe that they may have anglicized their family name and are not related to the Jacka clan from Cornwall.

My direct line immigrated from St. Day Cornwall, England (c1850-1860) to SW Wisconsin areas mentioned above and moved on to Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas. With many staying for several generations in various Kansas locations and Ness County KS. in particular. They now are living throughout the United States. Joseph Jacka b 1835 and wife Ann Toy, started this branch of the family in 1857 when they married in Shullsburg, Lafayette County WI. We are still trying to locate a brother of Joseph by the name of John Jacka b about 1837.

Okay, now you ask what is the catch? I can assure you this is NOT a commercial venture and all possible precautions will be used to protect your privacy, to the extent you desire. The web page is provided free of charge. If you share information with me, that you do not desire to be posted on the web I will not enter the info into the computer. I would ask that you consider the sharing of at least the names and birth place / dates, if at all possible. Names of all individuals believed to be still living, are listed on the internet as Living Jacka without a first name. All I would ask in return is a desire to learn about and to conserve our heritage and to consider sharing your family history, photos etc. I do think the Jacka name has a fascinating history. Hope to hear from you. Please submit any information or comments.
Sincerely yours,
ALAN W. JACKA

In seeking my grandfather, Richard Jacka, I found a family that appears to be his in the 1891 census. They were located at Redruth, Cornwall - Illogan Parish. His age at that time (14) is four or five years off from the birth year our family had for him, but his brothers and sisters have so many of the same given names as my dad's brothers and sisters, it could be him. His father is listed as Richard, age 37. Then I went back 30 years to the 1861 census, to look for 7-year old Richard. Found only a 5-year old, but also in Redruth, Cornwall, Illogan Parish - son of John and Mary. My grandfather didn't leave Redruth until the turn of the century (1899 or later).
