I have a William Jacques b1805 which would be the right sort of age for your Amos's father. I have no more information on William himself.

His parents were Thomas b1786 and Hannah Mewkill b 1780.

He had siblings John b1808, Mary 1810-1851, Ann b1811, Charles b1815, Elizabeth 1817 - 1820, Thomas b1819, and Joseph b1822.

I'm descended from Charles. All children of Thomas b1786 were Leicester based.

David - (david.ledger@ivdcs.co.uk)

Ora Jaques

Hello! I am looking for the family of Ora Jaques born 1891 in Iowa. Both of his parents were born in Canada. He is African American.

He has two children, Rolland & June both born in Omaha There names were changed to Jakes, he married Willa Mae Michels (Who was african american and her father was part french) in Omaha NE, and shortly died there after in 1934. He was shot dead in the streets.

I would like to find more information about his parents. And being that his birth was in 1891, I'm assuming I should hit the slavery road block.

Any information helps

Thank you so much for replying! I am looking for Pierre-Noel son of Nicolas. I question everything I look at as I have learned the hardway that there are alot of errors out there. I will track down your page and see what I can learn. Looking at actual records keeps me straight, but this one I could not find a way around--until you answered! Thank you again!
Dear Kathy,
It’s hard to know to whom exactly you are referring. Assuming you mean Pierre-Noel Jacques, son of Nicolas JACQUES & Marie Louise Hélène LANCELEUR, baptized 25 Dec 1753 at Charlesbourg, I have his father Nicolas born 20 Mar 1724 & died 28 Aug 1800.

Nicolas, the son of Louis JACQUES & Marie Marguerite SÉGUIN / SIGOUIN, was the brother of my husband’s 6th Great Grandfather Pierre JACQUES, who married Marie-Ambroise CHALIFOUR on 12 Feb 1720 at St-Charles-de-Charlesbourg.

I do have a Nicolas JACQUES, son of Pierre JACQUES & Marie-Anne BOUVIER, who was born 1748 & buried 28 Oct 1751 in Verchères.

Where did your information come from?

There is a lot of misinformation on the Web, which is why documentation is so important. I invite you to check out my J R JACQUES website on Ancestry.
My name is Schalk, but the family name was Jacques when they entered the United States. The name was misunderstood and was written on the entry form with the spelling "Schalk". there are several of the family members (decendents) with names that are different but still related. ex Chalk, Schalk Schalck, Shalk etc.

There is still a part of the family in Hoste, France where they have been for hundreds of years. I visited them about three years ago, and met various members of the family. The family speaks French, some German (due to the German control during the war), and limited English. You will be very proud of your French family.

The name may have been Jewish if you go back to the early part of the millenium, but most of the later records show them in France.

There is a "cousins" reunion held at three year intervals in Hoste, France. I believe the next one is in 2012.

Excited to see this message. My Jacques history starts with Solomon Jacques in Union/Townes County Geogia. He was born about 1795, married twice, had a son also called Solomon. Second wife Martha mother of my great grandmother Martha Hannah married to Floyd Collier and ended up in Cherokee County NC. Other than one census record showing Solomon and Martha in Georgia (he as an old man) I can't find more about him.

Cordialement,

Jean-François JACQUES

I have a hit a brick wall on them and haven't been able to find them after I found them on an 1880 census in Manchester NH.Their son Frederick was my grandfather. Does this make us related? Having another older child would make sense since Hannah & Thomas were married 5 Nov 1804 and the first child I have for them is John born 1 Feb 1808/bpt 7 Feb 1808. I would love to know about William. I have some more info further back on Hannah's family but not Thomas'. I would be more than glad to share.
Yes, I think I have a connection to this family. Thomas and Hannah Jacques would be my 4 x grandparents too. Mary also had an older brother I believe, William Jacques born 1805, he was christened at a different church so he doesn't show with the other baptisms. I will have to recheck my records to be sure but all the names and dates of siblings match the information that i have.

I would say the name is French not Jewish. Jacques or Jaques as a surname was in usage in English parish records in the 1500s. It could predate the French Huguenots remember that England in the middle ages was an Anglo-French country ruled by the French speaking Normans.

C
