Alexander Jamieson the painter

I am looking for a photograph of my Great Grandmother's brother Alexander Jamieson. He married Gertrude Biddy MacDonald and they were painters from Scotland. He has paintings in the Louvre and the Tate Gallery. I have heard many things about photos of him being taken when he served with the 10th York and Lancaster Regiment during World War 1 as Quarter-Master. Does anyone know how I can access these?

I have a Samuel Jamieson married (Maria Scott) 1849 in Maghera, family from Knockloughrim, father James (a merchant).

Samuel was born around 1821, so James born 1800ish. Samuels mother was Agnes, as she was living with the family in Scotland in 1851 census, then family emigrated to New Zealand in 1863.

Not in 1851 Ireland census, and can find no records before then.

Would love to find any relatives over there as planning a trip. Samuel was a carpenter at marriage, a joiner in Scotland and started a famous building company in Christchurch NZ, a number of their building currently being demolished due to earthquakes.

Hi Cathy, Clara Duffrin Jamieson died in 1927. The death record is here at ancestry.ca. The death was reported by her brother Clarence Jamieson. Clarence immigrated to Chicago in the early 1900's and brought his 14 yr old niece Clara Davis with him to Chicago to keep house in 1928. She is listed as Mary in the US Census in 1930. The reason he brought her to the states was because both of her parents had passed away. We believe this woman is my husbands Grandmother.
I would like to exchange information with you privately if possible.
Fred,
Thank you so much for responding!! I do not have a photo or anything from her headstone, but I do have quite a few copies of Civil War documents, one that he personally signed, spelling it as JAMIESON. He also seemed to be very proud of that Marshall Lee middle names. He was also a Provost Marshall in Mo. he also was a census taker in one year I believe 1860, I will have to look when I get home.
He continues to sign as James M.L. Jamieson, was educated, a teacher at one point, shot a "bushwacker dead" and was imprisoned by civil authorities for almost a year and finally turned over to the military and released as he shot this "bushwacker" while in the duties of acting Provost Marshall and carring papers for some of the commanding officers, one being Gen'l Grant... I have more information on his military time than when he passed or where. Still do not know any of that. I do have some actual pension papers that Sarah filed for in about 1885 and finally got about $300 in 1905!
Have to leave this moment, I am sitting here in a genealogy class in Ft Myers Florida, such a surprise to get this response at this moment!!
Will email you later, here is my direct address
owenswesties@netzero.net
Joyce Owens

She had 5 sisters but my father (her son) Colin, was adopted at an early age and we have no information about his birth family other than aquired through my research, which isn't a great deal! My father was also named Barney & his brother was Stanley. Laura's b-day was Feb. 14. I think Laura had a sister, as I called her Aunt Bea. I think there was a brother who I called Uncle Bob. There is a famous lady Roberta Jamieson. Google her. I think she has a sister Laura. I was just told they are my 2nd cousins twice removed. I might have more info. Regards Judie

Richhill (Richardson's Hill) is in County Armagh between the city of Armagh and Portadown. There were Jamieson's listed there in Kilmore Parish. One family were farmers listed in the townland's of Mulladry. As far as is known, the were protestant farmers who most probably were transplanted in Armagh. Hope that helps a bit.

My Jamieson family (originally Jameson) went the other way. They were catholics from Antrim who migrated to Scotland for work in 1860.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for your response. I haven't been very active doing research on my Jamieson family tree for awhile. Just checked tonight and saw your query and your family tree. I am related to the Jamieson's from my grandmother, Elsie Gordon Espie (nee Jamieson), from Glasgow, Scotland. Her brother, James Craig Jamieson, came out to Hawaii, as did his uncle, William Jamison. I don't have the dates handy, but it doesn't quite jive with your Jamieson's so far. However, it's good to hear from a Jamieson seeker. Keep in touch.

Olivia Edwards

I do love these Bingos!

At this point I'll ask you to go to www.findagrave.com where I've posted a bunch of our Jamieson family records in Cypress Hills Cemetery in NY. (No sense in my repeating all that info.) There are photos of the gravestone. Some 25 or so Jamiesons were buried in that plot. Many of them children. Have been there several times in the past 15 years.

Would love a photo of the portrait of James Jamieson. Did it hang over a fireplace in one of the sitting rooms in Berkeley? We visited the house as tourists when I was a child, and I recall seeing such a painting. My dad clearly looked related to the man in that painting.

Do you have any info on how / where James died? We have several stories and I'd love to get to 'the facts'. He was buried in Cypress Hills. He was the first person buried in that plot.

I have a studio photo portrait of John Jamieson. Will be happy to send to along to you once I find it on this computer.

My g'g'mother was Mary Jamieson Wood, one of John's 2 sisters.

Have collected a fair amount of Jamieson info over the years, especially about Walter, John's brother. And I tracked the family back to Thomas J. and Mary F. via the Old Parish Registers [OPR] in Scotland. Also, have birth records for several of the children in Bourlogne, France. John was born in Dundee, after the family returned from France and before they sailed for NY. Have found the family in the 1851 Scots census in Dundee. They lived at 3 St. Davids Lane, Dundee.

FYI, I believe that Jane Taylor's parents were David Taylor and Margaret Robertson.

Have connected with one of Henry Jamieson's descendants, Jamie Figenbaum. Henry was another of the brothers.

What is your preferred email address . . .so that I can send you John's photo? Please send James' to me at celtictwigs@yahoo.com WOW! Finally a connection with another Jamieson branch!
Pat Wood

Harriet Barber was my husband's grandmother. She died in the late 1930s. My husband was born in 1941 and lived at Berkeley until age four, in the smaller house (formerly kitchen) next to the big house. His father Frank and Aunt Connie (Constance Stirling) sold their shares to Malcolm. Mac and Grace died in the late 1990s. My husband John has no contact with his only cousin Jamie (Malcolm Jr.) who now owns Berkeley Plantation. I visited there about 12 years ago. Grace was still alive, but not well. I did not meet her. Since my msg to you, I have learned that John Jamieson's grandfather was James and grandmother was Jane Taylor. Also got info on Thomas Jamieson and Mary Farquhar. We have a watercolor portrait of who I now know is James Jamieson. Would you like me to send a photo of it? Best regards, Marian Jamieson (Danville, CA)

Greetings from Canada, Cousin ~ Definately still a working e-mail address after about 12y ~ otherwise I would miss exciting messages such as your's!

If your Gran was John Ingram CLARK's daughter, she would have been a 1C to my gran, Martha Clark BROWN, which makes you my 3C. My gran was the daughter of Martha Jamieson CLARK & Andrew BROWN.

Wonderful & thrilling as you are the first contact we've had from one of John's descendants. You will have to tell us all about him, etc. Might be a good idea to put John's details on the boards, if you haven't done so already.

There are several of us, from 5 of Martha Clark JAMIESON's & Andrew BROWN's children. Not all of us are actually 2C, as Andy in Scotland & I (Canada) are 1C, as are Carole in Gloucs & Sue in Yks. Paul in Lancs; William & daughter Marnie in Scotland, as is Ali way up in Wester Ross. Jan in Scotland & Yvette in Spain are sisters; Joe & Elizabeth in NSW Australia are siblings. Heather & her 5 sisters are in Qld, Au. Mainly we are 2C & I suppose more than "several" eh? Then there is Jeanette & her 1C in NZ who are great-granddaughters of Thomasina JAMIESON's sister, making them our 4C.

I can be contacted at: amheater[at]cogeco.ca Some of us are also on Face Book (me under ~ Trena Wyatt Heater)

Looking forward to hearing from you and where you are located ~ UK? or elsewhere?

Toni

John Jamieson, of Jamieson and Bond Lumber and Coal of Rockaway Beach, NY, was born in Dundee, Scotland. In 1904 John purchased Berkeley Plantation in VA. Berkeley passed on to his son, Walter, and is still in that family.

John's older brother, Walter, served in the Civil War, and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Walter never married; he was also known as Sam Collyer, light weight boxer.

Brother Henry also served in that war. He died in 1882 in Rockaway Beach. The older brothers were Thomas, Joseph and James. We believe that James, the oldest son, remained in Scotland. Joseph died as a yhoung adult, and did not marry. Thomas was a blacksmith who came over to Brooklyn when their widowed mother died in 1869 in order to care for the minor teenage children. John was a minor at that time.

There were 2 sisters: Mary and Jennie. Mary was my great grandmother.

There was no Chuck or Charles in this generation of the family.

Pat
