I am really curious as to where this information comes from. In the many years i have researched this family (incluiding having walked on both parcels of land David owned in Berks co Pa) Having hired a profesional researcher in Phila. and three for Berks Co.& Macungie Pa. No one has come up with this sort of information. So I guess my question is, how did we miss all this ? It would be exciting to learn more. also to make contact with pljarrett1
Thanks
lowell1@ioa.com

Re: Isaac Jarrett in West Virginia

Hi, jmjarvis1952

In response to your recent post on Isaac JARRETT and Mary Ann JARRETT, nee GRAHAM (see below), Isaac JARRETT did not die in
"1842 in Jackson co, IL" as stated below in your post. According to info that you also posted below, he was alive in 1850 as he was living then with his wife, Mary Ann and family. (See quote from 1850 census record.)

The info you posted on the legal case between Isaac JARRETT and Lewis Y. GRAHAM, who was my G gdf, was my info that I found in the court records of Kanawha co, VA (WV). Another JARRETT/GRAHAM family researcher had requested info on the wife, of Isaac JARRETT and I responded using the records that I had discovered on Mary Ann GRAHAM, sister to my G gdf, Lewis Y. GRAHAM. Mary Ann had mar a man named Isaac JARRETT and in 1850 they were living in Kanaway co, VA (WV).

In Feb 1856, this Isaac JARRETT, the husband of Mary Ann GRAHAM, filed an A & B case again Lewis Y. GRAHAM. The case never came to trial as this Isaac JARRETT did not appear and finally in Feb 1859, S. ARNOLD, the county sheriff, reported that the could not be found and was believed to "not be of this world." Thus this Isaac JARRETT disappeared or died sometime between Feb 1856 and Feb 1859. I have no info about the Isaac JARRETT you listed as having died in IL in 1842; however, that Isaac can't be the husband of this Mary Ann GRAHAM as he was living in 1850. I posted this info in response to Robert FITCH's query. Moreover, as the court case info was copied from my posting verbatim, the info should have been in quotes and some indicated given as to whom had posted the info. Otherwise, the info appears as just random copying and of no use to anyone to verify or to contact the originator of the info posted.

Also, there is confusion in the info posted here about my ancestor, Patrick MURPHY, who was my 2G gdf, and his genealogy. He did have three wives. My ancestor is his last wife: Mrs. Anne "Nancy" MILLER, nee JAMES. She was the widow of Cornelius MILLER, who was deceased by 1786 according to report by the Sheriff of the 2nd Battalion, Augusta co, VA in the "List of Delinquents...Tax Record." Patrick MURPHY and Mrs. Ann "Nancy" MILLER, nee JAMES< were mar08 Mar 1791 , Greenbriar, VA (WV) by Rev John ALDERSON.

I researched the info on Patrick MURPHY years ago and traced all of his children by his three wives. Some descendants have joined NSDAR on Patrick MURPHY's Revolutionary War service. I've had the privilege to have been in contact with some of his descendants. I hope the info gets straightened out and is presented as it was posted originally.

How are you descended from the GRAHAM/Murphy and JARRETT families? I would be interested in viewing your line of descent.

Many thanks for your understanding and assistance.

Ellen Whitehurst Robertson

"jmjarvis1952 Posted: 28 Mar 2012 12:14PM
Classification: Query
Surnames: Graham, Murphy, Jarrett"

"Isaac Jarrett.... and died 1842 in Jackson Co., IL."

More About Isaac Jarrett:
"Census: 1850, Kanwaha Co., WV: age 39 with wife"
"Property: 1856,Sold land to John Y.
Ancestors of Mary Ann Graham

Generation No. 1

1. Mary Ann Graham, born 14 Oct 1815. She was the daughter of 2. John Graham and 3. Nancy Mary Murphy. She married (1) Isaac Jarrett. He was born Bet. 1775 - 1811 in Greenbrier Co., Va, and died 1842 in Jackson Co., IL. He was the son of James Jarrett and Elizabeth Griffith.

More About Mary Ann Graham:
Census: 1850, Kanwaha Co., WV: age 34

Notes for Isaac Jarrett:
The following information was taken from the WV Kanawha County Court Records (FHL film # 190090, pt 189)

"County Court, 1858-2: Commonwealth vs Lewis GRAHAM, Msd [sic], A & B, against Isaac JARRETT. Indictment.

From Commonwealth of VA to wit: Summons for L. GRAHAM: appear before Justices of County Court, 1 Jun. 'To answer us of an Indictment found against him in said court for Tresspass, Assault and Battery, 22 Mar 1856.'[I used commas to make the reading easier.]

VA Kanawha Co, to wit:

'The jurors of the said Commonwealth of VA, in and for the body of the County of Kanawha and now attending the said court, upon their oath present, that Lewis GRAHAM, on the 12 Feb 1856, in the said County of Kanawha, in an upon one Isaac JARRETT did make an assault and him the said Isaac JARRETT did then and there beat, bruise, wound, and ill treat and other wrongs to the said Isaac JARRETT, then and there did to the great damage of the said Isaac JARRETT and against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth of VA.

This indictment is found upon the information and testimony of Isaac JARRETT sworn in court to give evidence to the grand jury at the request of the Grand Jury.'

Summons: Isaac JARRETT, appear 1st Aug
Summons: 18 May 1857 testify against Lewis GRAHAM
Summons: appear next term, 1st Feb - 07 Dec 1857
Summons: appear next term, 1st Feb - 04 Dec 1858
Summons: appear next term, 1st Aug - 15 Jun 1858
Summons: appear next term, 1st Nov - 18 Sep 1856 [sic]
Summons: appear next term, 1st Feb - 22 Dec 1856 [sic]

07 Jun 1856: Commonwealth vs L. GRAHAM - Summons on Indictment

Served: Aug 1857 - L. GRAHAM, not found
Served: Feb 1858 - L. GRAHAM, not found
Served: Feb 1859 - L. GRAHAM, not found 'first day'
Note written above summons--'Isaac Jarret not found said to have departed this life. S. ARNOLD'
Served: Aug 1858 - L. GRAHAM, not found
Served: Nov 1856 - L. GRAHAM, not found
Served: Feb 1857 - L. GRAHAM, not found"

According to my information, an Isaac JARRETT married Mary Ann GRAHAM. Lewis GRAHAM had a sister by that name who married a man named Isaac JARRETT. Isaac and Mary Ann JARRETT were in the 1850 Census, Kanawha Co, WV. Mary Ann GRAHAM was b 14 Oct 1815. Isaac JARRETT was b about 1811 in VA. This is the same info given by Robert Fitch about the Isaac JARRETT he is seeking. His query was posted 29 Jan 2004.

Lewis and Mary Ann GRAHAM's parents were: John GRAHAM and Nancy Mary (MURPHY) GRAHAM, of Kanawha Co, VA (WV.)

From the Court Records it appears that this Isaac JARRETT died sometime during these court proceedings. I think that this Isaac JARRETT, who was involved in this altercation with Lewis GRAHAM, was the Isaac JARRETT, who married Mary Ann. I also think that he is the Isaac JARRETT that Robert Fitch mentions in his original message. Robert states that his Isaac JARRETT was last heard of in 1856. That time is the year of this A & B incident; 12 Feb 1856. Does anyone know the DOD of the Isaac JARRETT in this court case?

I found no other record about this case. It appears that once Isaac JARRETT was said to have "departed this life" the case was over. This statement was written close to the date of Feb 1859. But since Isaac JARRETT was listed as "not found" for long periods during this case, he could have died at anytime between the date of the complaint, up to the note stating that he was said to have "departed this life." I have no information on the identify of S. Arnold.

Does anyone have any additional information about any of these individuals? Please contact me if you have or if any of these folks might be your ancestors. Lewis GRAHAM was my great grandfather.

Thanks for your interest and assistance.

More About Isaac Jarrett:
Census: 1850, Kanwaha Co., WV: age 39 with wife
Property: 1856, Sold land to John Y. Jarrett

Generation No. 2

2. John Graham He married 3. Nancy Mary Murphy.
3. Nancy Mary Murphy, born Abt. 1794; died 19 May 1882 in Anamosa, IA, USA. She was the daughter of 6. Patrick Murphy and 7. Ann Nancy James.

More About John Graham:
Residence: Kanawha Co., VA (WV)

Children of John Graham and Nancy Murphy are:
1	i. Patrick Murphy, born 1751 in Cork Co., Ireland; died 1821 in Nicholas Co., VA. He was the son of 12. Francis Murphy. He married 7. Ann Nancy James 1791 in Greenbrier, VA, USA.
7.
Isaac & Mary Ann Jarrett were my 3rd great grandparents. I have been trying to trace the maternal lineage on up the line (everyone seems to concentrate on the paternal) -- mother to mother has value also.

If Mary Ann Graham's mother is indeed Nancy Mary Murphy, that would offer some proof from information via my 1st grandmother that she was Scotch/Irish.

Anyone have any updated info? Thanks!

Re: Long lost 4 generational great grandson of Howell Jarrett looking for other family members here

We have something in common! According to the trees on Ancestry.com, Howell Jarrett is my 4th great grandfather. It is certain that Florence Mae Jarrett (married surname Ninestein), who lived from 1879 - 1961, was my grandmother. According to the 1880 U.S. federal census, she was the 8 month old child, at that time, of John Jarrett and Sarah L. Jarrett, residing along with her then 2 year old brother Eugene in Thomasville, Davidson, NC. I had heard my father speak of Uncle Gene Jarrett so this is definitely his and my family on that particular census record. Beyond her generation, however, I realy do not know. I have relied on the Ancestry.com trees for info beyond that. I do not even know with any certainty about her parents John and Sarah. I know that my father's sister (given first name Sarah, so that is some clue, perhaps) joined the DAR by tracing back along the Jarrett line but I was told it had been by the skin of her teeth at the time due to names and dates on headstones being worn away making it hard to submit necessary proof of lineage. If you or anyone else has anything enlightening to share, whether a theory or absolute proof pertaining to this line, please feel free to come forward.

What do you have that ties David Gerrad of Robinson twp, Berks Co. Pa. to David and Mary of Scotland. I have done extensive research on this line over the years and have not been able to find proof of his orgin although many historical records say they came from Scotland. I have walked on his land in both Exeter Twp an Robeson twp.

Henry Carnes that married Jane Jarrett, grandson of Henry Kerns that married Catherine Hotzenbella

To many coincidences. Henry Carnes that married Jane Jarrett is the grandson of Henry Kerns and son of Jacob Kerns that married Mary Lewis. Mary Kearns is found in the 1810 Charleston Kanawha census with two boys age 1-10, James and Henry. Neighbors to Mary in the 1810 census are the Phillips and Massies, in-law families to James and Henry.

Neighbors Robert, Jonathan and Moses Massie that married Rebecca Lewis (sister of Mary Lewis Kearns Carnes) are all brothers to Henry Carnes mother-in-law, Margret Mary Massie.

Another neighbor James Phillips that married Elizabeth Lewis (sister of Mary Lewis Kearns Carnes), is father-in-law of James Carnes that married Comfort Phillips.

Jacob and John Kerns were both married in Greenbrier County, to Mary Lewis and Elizabeth Pope, respectively. Just as Jacob and John Kerns were left as orphans at a young age, James and Henry Carnes were left fatherless at a young age.

As per "Historical Record of Old Frederick & Hampshire Counties, VA, Revised" by Wilmer L Kerns p 225 & 226
"It is believed Henry Kerns died as a soldier during the Revolutionary War. His will was probated in Shenandoah County" Kerns
p 226
--List of children as per the 1776 Frederick Co will & 1801 estate records of STEPHEN HOTZENBELLA, Henry Kerns' father-in-law, and the children's grandfather.

--List of children as per her father's 1776 will & 1801 estate records:
1801 Frederick Co VA Estate of Stephen Hotzenbella (Hotzenpillar); Executor: Valentine Switzer
Legacies paid: NICHOLAS, ELIZABETH, MARY, MAGDALINE, FREDERICK, JACOB & JOHN KERNS, surviving heirs of CATHERINE KERNS
Rudolph Bumgardner
Rebecca Bumgardner
Peter Switzer (son of Valentine)
Anna Maria Stroup
Sarah Coffman
Elizabeth Hoover
Susannah Hicklind (Hickle?)
Jacob Hoster
Abraham Bernard (wife's legacy)
Mary Switzer (wife of Valentine)
Some vouchers found irregular by court; Power of Attorney from several heirs to Nicholas Kerns, assigned by Mary, Magdaline, & Frederick Kerns, before Magistrates of Greenbrier Co VA.
After looking at the preview, this message may appear as a extremely long run on with out proper paragraphing, if so please forgive.

Alright Jarrett researchers, listen up :) I am back after my last thank you response in Jan 2010

This thread discusses the Henry Carnes "Bible" and establishes that Jane Jarrett is the daughter of Isaac and Margaret Massie Macey (daughter of Jeptha Massie) and grandaughter of James Jarrett and Elizabeth Griffey.

My proposition to the Jarrett Family is that Elizabeth Griffey (wife of James Jarrett) and Rachel Griffith(wife of Wilson Lewis-1750-1808) are sisters or cousins.

One file I found shows the father of Rachel as Thomas Griffith, but I have nothing on Elizabeth. Wilson Lewis and Rachel Griffith have a son named John Jarrett Lewis 1790-1860.

Obtaining information on the aforementioned proposition is my first quest in perhaps determining Henry Carnes as the son of Jacob Carnes 1773-? and Mary Lewis(daughter of Wilson Lewis and Rachel Griffith). Some files have Henry Carnes' middle name as "Lewis"(in memoria to his mother?), but no file shows his parents, mother Lewis or otherwise, except for those files that reflect Henry's parents as Alexander Carnes and Catherine Foster of Waxhaw SC. I find no reason whatsoever that Henry's parents were Alexander and Catherine.

In other words, it appears that someone has been down this path before, i.e. determining that Henry's mother was a Lewis.

I am also proposing that James Carnes is the son of Jacob Carnes and perhaps brother to Henry. James married Comfort Phillips whose parents are James Phillips and Elizabeth Lewis and grandparents are Wilson Lewis and Rachael Griffith. James and Comfort Carnes were very close to the Jeptha Massie, father of Margaret Massie (wife of Isaac Jarrett) family of Lawrence, Ironton, Ohio and intermarried with them.

So that about sums it up, as far as the information I have to work on. It is difficult for me to see how James, Henry and Jacob Carnes were not related to each other considering the close relationship they all had with the Jarrett, Lewis, Griffey, Griffith and Massie families.

Any help from the Jarrett Family is extremely appreciated.

Respectfully,

Keith Vance
San Diego CA
keithvance@cox.net
Do you have a copy of "The Jarrett's of Pa and NC and Beyond" By Dr Charles Jarrett? 450 pages of years of research of the line of John Jarrett of Macungie Pa. I have worked with him before he passed away in 05.
I was wondering how the name Hass came up on Anna Maria. Chuck could not find her maiden name and I have a copy of her Will and there is no mention of Hass in that will????
Also Marie is a sur name.
I have hired professional researchers to do the work on my line of David Jarrett(Garred) of Pa, John Jarrett of Macungie Pa and John Jarrett(Gerit) and Mary Luken of Horsham twp of Pa. just nw of Phily. Not one person has been able to trace their origin except that there several historical records that say Scotland and England and before that French Huguenots, which was Lutheran. Henry Jarrett did come from England and his descsndents settled in Suffix Co Va

This i s my line of Jarrett in the Macungie Twp., area. Elizabeth Jarrett d/John Jarrett, Sr., & Anna Maria Haas b: 1726 Easton, Macungie Twp., then Bucks Co. 1752 becoming Northampton Co., PA. She died aft 1780 in TN. she married Daniel Turney/Dorney abt 1747 S. Whitehall Twp., Northampton Co., in 1812 becoming Lehigh Co., PA. They had 11 kids. Elizabeth Jarrett is my 6th Great-Greataunt.
-------------------
Gilbert-Knappenberger-Jarrett
& Allied Families 1990
-------------pg-368----------------
ELISABETH JARRETT second daughter of JOHN JARRETT SR. and his wife ANNA MARIA (HAAS), was born circa 1726, and is presumed to have grown up in the Macungie area of Lehigh County, Pa. She was married circa 1747 to DANIEL DORNEY.
DANIEL DORNEY was born in the western Palatinate area of Germany and baptized there in the Rieschweiler Reformed Church on 30 November 1713. He was a son of John and Eva Dorney (Thurny). DANIEL arrived in Philadelphia in 1740 on the Ship Samuel. Records indicate a brother PETER arrived in Philadelphia a year later on the Ship Friendship, a brother HENRY arrived in Philadelphia in 1743 on the Ship Phoenix. This information is from "18th Century Emigrants Volume II" by Annette Burgert.
Land and church records indicate that all three brothers settled in the Lehigh County, Pa. area, and all three had children who received similar names in many instances. This duplication of first names has resulted in some confusion in the records of the three families involved. For instance, an earlier historian has written that DANIEL DORNEY who married Eva Barbara Guth, and ANNA MARIA DORNEY who was the second wife of Lorenz Guth, were children of DANIEL DORNEY, SR., the emigrant. Accumulated evidence does not substantiate this - both appear to have been children of HENRY DORNEY and his wife ANNA APPOLONIA nee Haberle.
DANIEL DORNEY JR., the son of DANIEL SR. & ELISABETH JARRETT DORNEY, survived his father who died in early 1780 and he was one of the executors of his father's will. DANIEL (husband of Eva Guth) died February 1778. A study of land records in the Northampton County Courthouse, indicate the DANIEL who died in 1778 was a son of HENRY DORNEY. HENRY DORNEY died in 1771 and his land was divided between sons ADAM and DANIEL. Studying sponsors at baptisms for children of ANNA MARIA DORNEY (second wife of Lorenz Guth) it was noted that sponsors JACOB and ADAM DORNEY were sons of HENRY, and brothers of the younger deceased DANIEL, who had been married to Eva Catharine Guth. ADAM DORNEY (the sponsor) was already married when the child he sponsored was baptized in 1784. ADAM DORNEY, son of DANIEL SR., was only 16 years old at that time. If ANNA MARIA DORNEY GUTH had been a daughter of DANIEL SR., she would most likely have chosen her own older brothers for sponsors - JOHN, DANIEL, PHILIP - and assuredly, her mother, ELISABETH.
NOTE: Lorenz Guth's first wife - SALOME DORNEY - was most likely another daughter of HENRY. SALOME, daughter of HENRY DORNEY, was a sponsor for a child in 1764, together with her sister CATHARINE.
DANIEL DORNEY, husband of ELISABETH JARRETT, wrote his will January 1779. It was probated in Easton, Pa. at Northampton County Courthouse 24 March 1780. His two eldest sons, JOHN & DANIEL, were named executors. Under the provisions of the will, JOHN & DANIEL were to receive the "plantation" for 1700 pounds. They paid 600 pounds, and the other 1100 pounds was to be divided among the eleven children, and paid to them as follows:
100	pounds to HENRY DORNEY in 1782
100	pounds to CATHARINE DORNEY in 1787
100	pounds to PHILIP DORNEY in 1783
100	pounds to MAGDALENA DORNEY in 1788
100	pounds to ANNA MARIA DORNEY in 1784
100	pounds to PETER DORNEY in 1789
100	pounds to EVA DORNEY in 1785
100	pounds to ADAM DORNEY in 1790
100	pounds to BARBARA DDRNEY in 1786
-----------pg 369--------------
The widow ELISABETH and her maintenance were also included in DANIEL'S will. For the complete will see WILL BOOK 1, page 240 (1780) Northampton County Courthouse in Easton, Pa. In addition, there is an original document on file at the Lehigh County Historical Society, Allentown, Pa., dated 26 April 1786, which was signed by both JOHN DORNEY an DANIEL DORNEY (sons & executors of the last will & testament of DANIEL DORNEY SR.,, dec'd, late of Macungie Township), related to the settling of the estate.
Because of the duplication of first names for the children of the three DORNEY brothers (who all settled in the same area) it has been impossible to determine marriages of DANIEL & ELISABETH'S children, or possible grandchildren. Available information which follows is from church records and the enumeration of the children in DANIEL'S will:
(1) JOHN DORNEY - born circa 1748 - still living in 1786 when he signed document re father's estate.
(2) DANIEL DORNEY - born circa; 1750 - still living in 1786 hen he signed document re father's estate.
(3) HENRY DORNEY - born circa 1752 - named in father's will to receive 100 pounds in 1782.
(4) PHILIP DORNEY - born circa 1754 - named in father's will to receive 100 pounds in 1783.
(5) ANNA MARIA DORNEY - born circa 1756 - named in father's will to receive 100 pounds in 1784.
(6) EVA DORNEY - born circa 1758 - named in father's will to receive 100 pounds in 1785.
(7) BARBARA DORNEY - born circa. 1760 - named in father's will to receive 100 pounds in 1786.
(8) CATHARINE DORNEY - born circa 1762 - named in father's will to receive 100 pounds in 1787.
(9) MAGDALENA DORNEY - born circa 1764 - named in father's will to receive 100 pounds in 1788.
(10) PETER DORNEY - born circa 1766 - named in father's will to receive 100 pounds in 1789.
(11) ADAM DORNEY - baptized 3 July 1768 Western Salisbury - sponsors: Adam & Anna Maria Haberle. He was named in father's will to receive 100 pounds in 1790.
JARRETT historians state members of this family moved to either Carolinas, Virginia, Kentucky or Tennessee, depending on version in hand:. It appears certain that some of the children, and possibly the widow, did leave this area sometime after DANIEL'S death in 1780 - final estate settlement document was signed April 1786 by two eldest sons. In 1989 a letter was received at Lehigh County Historical Society from RALPH TURNEY of Nevada, Ca. stating his ancestor, DANIEL TURNEY (DORNEY) was born in 1788 in Tennessee, & was believed o be descended from Lehigh County DORNEYS
