Hello Sheila and Delece,
I've only just happened upon this correspondence, and hope you still keep in touch with this message board.
I don't know whether your
Jarvis connections are the first you've checked out in this area of
England - if so, there's a lot of interesting material available about the area for you to look at, if you're like me and really want an idea of what it was like when your ancestors were living there. The maritime trade was predominant, and the local families whose names crop up again and again were mostly involved in it one way or another. The towns and villages in the area which have often turned up when I've been looking for someone are Salcombe, Malborough, Kingsbridge and East Portlemouth. There were many Jarvises at East Portlemouth, including my gggggrandmother Petronell (married at Malborough to Samuel Tolcher in 1801) - check out
www.ford.ndo.co.uk/chron/jarvis.htm for a list.
I'm particularly interested in the Tolcher family (mariners, master mariners, shipwrights, a Salcombe
Harbour pilot and harbourmaster), and in the Thornings, who were mostly carpenters in the shipbuilding trade. (Also the Lezanto/Santo family, but they came from just over the
Cornwall side of Plymouth, so I shouldn't think you'll stumble over info on any of them except my ggggrandmother Esther, who married Petronell's son Samuel in Malborough).
I'll be interested to know if you find a link between Petronell and your own Jarvises.
Regards, Eileen.
