Would this be the Thomas Saffin that lost a son in a house fire in Danville 1896? A surviving son, Donald, moved to Latah and lived for a while with the Jarvis family. I have an account of the fire from a Danville newspaper.

William Jarvis was a soldier in the Union army. He enlisted August 15, 1862, in company B, Twenty-third Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, went south and participated in the battle with Kirby Smith, also with Morgan's forces in Kentucky, and was in thickest of the fight in many other engagements. He was discharged in the spring of 1863 on account of disability, the result of a wound received at Arkansas Post. In August, 1864, he re- enlisted in company E, of the Forty-third Wisconsin and served until July, 1865. After his discharge from the service, he returned to his home in Lafayette county, Wisconsin. He is a native of Pennsylvania, born April 25, 1830, where he grew to manhood, and received his education in the public schools. At the age of eighteen he engaged with a carpenter and joiner to learn the trade and served two years, then went to Fairmount, Pennsylvania, and worked under instructions one year, then went to work in a cotton factory for an uncle and remained in his employ until 1856. He then moved to Lafayette county, Wisconsin and farmed rented land for a time, then purchased a farm in company with H. B. Commings, in Kendalltown, Lafayette county, where he remained until 1875, when he came to Cass county, Iowa and bought farm in sections 31 and 32 of Noble township where he now lives. He was married in 1851 to Mary Jones. They have seven children - Elizabeth, Mary J., William H., Viola, John R., Clara and Frank G.

Story from History of Cass county, Iowa.

Are you just starting? Let me give you some help. I have a lot of Jarvises in a disjointed tree because I've been trying to track down my 18th century Jarvises in Delaware. I don't think your Jarvises are in my line, but here is what I know. Forest's father was Columbus (1878-1933) and his mother was Maude Blake (1888-1981). Columbus' father was Solomon (1845-1896) and his mother was Louisa Lane (1848-1921). Solomon's father was Caleb (1801-1880) and his mother was Diana White (1803-1866). Caleb's parents are unclear. Lots of trees say John Jarvis and Sarah Hood but too many children are attributed, apparently wrongly, to this couple. Happy hunting! Ann

I am a descendant of Isaac Jarvis, who married Elizabeth Ann Chapman. From what I know they had 6 children, William Isaac and twin Mable who died at 1 month, Edward, Nellie, Winnie and twin who died at birth. William Isaac married Gertrude Jones and had 5 children, Harold (Buss), Donald William, Viola, Laretta, and Ruby. Ruby married Lowell Chapman. Ruby had 3 children, Cheryl, Kathy, Rick. So finally I am the daughter of Cheryl. If any of my information differs from yours let me know.

Through a Jarvis Family Tree posted on Ancestry.com, I have learned that Myrtle Tripp Jarvis and her 1st husband
Caludious Bernard "Charles" Jarvis divorced.
It has also been mentioned James T. did not live with his parents, even his father, after Myrtle died. Apparently he did not get along with my grandfather (Harry Rupp) and may have gone to an orphanage. The 1930 Census shows him living with his maternal grandparents and the 1920 Census shows him living with my grandfather and his children or at least my grandfather and Myrtle. My mother and her siblings were raised on a farm with their paternal grandparents. They may have not lived with Myrtle or James.
Do you know anything about James having been burned and having facial scars and part of one ear missing from the burns?? The source on Ancestry says it was not talked about.
The Ancestry source also says James T. was hard to live with?

Thanks again for your information.

Christine Scallon

PS James would have been 8-9 when Myrtle died (1920)

As I am going back through Jarvis posts I thought I would reply back to you on what my outline says. My information is from an outline called The Jarvis Family by John M. Robinson dated July 1970. I was sent this by Harold Gilliland and also found it at the Ripley County Historical Society in Versailles, Indiana.

There was a Parker N. Jarvis, 3rd child of 10 to William Jarvis and Margaret Thompson. These Jarvises came from Harford County MD, to Pendleton KY and then to Ripley County. Parker was born 1792. He married 1st to Martha (Patsy) Gaither in 1814. They divorced in 1827. Then she remarried Thornton Jarvis b 1806 (son of Daniel Jarvis III and Martha Thompson.

He married 2nd in 1832 in Louisville KY to Eliza Lowery (Dunn). They had 3 children.
I have more detailed dates and children's names if this is your relative.
Let me know if you think this is the same Parker Jarvis. It appears you have some of the same names but in a different position in the family than the way I have it.
Suzy

Sorry to bug you about James T. Jarvis. According to information I have from the 1920 Census, a James T. Jarvis,
he was 8 years old and living with (for census pruposes) my grandfather (Harry Rupp), Myrtle Tripp Jarvis Rupp, and my mother, aunt and uncle. He would have been the same age as my aunt at the time. The census was completed the year Myrtle died.
Does this square with what you know? I was also puzzled about Myrtle being an army nurse. I had never heard anything like that in my genealogy quests.
Thanks again.

Christine Scallon

ON SECOND THOUGHT:
I am wondering if the James T.Jarvis you are talking about is the same one I am wondering about. What prompted my 2nd thoughts is when his mom Myrtle died you mentioned he went to an orphanage until his dad got out of the service.
Was his dad divorced from Myrtle?? If not, then James T. Jarvis cannot be the same one I am researching because she married my grandfather. I had assumed perhaps her first husband had died, though divorce was also a possibility. So many other factors do fit though: James's mom's name and his middle initial and the fact of his mom's death.
Please advise when you can. Thanks so much.

Christine Scallon
Thanks so much for this extended information about James T. Jarvis. Myrtle did die of TB Dec. 8th, 1920. Myrtle and my grandfather, Harry, were only married a short time. They married Dec. 14th, 1918.
I do have information from the 1930 Census that a James T. Jarvis was living at that time with Talefirro J. & Elizatbeth Tripp who were in their 50s. I had assumed those were his grand parents as indicated in the census.
The idea of an orphanage(maybe earlier in his life) is intriguing, though.
Thanks again,

Christine Scallon

John Jarvis & Ann Richards

My grandaughter descends from Thomas Jarvis 1804 VA - 1879 WV. Almost all Jarvis researchers show his parents as John Jarvis, some with Anne Richards, some with Sarah Hood.
In trying to research John Jarvis I came to realize is that the pedigree for John Jarvis 1750-1826 is hopelessly messed up. Public and private member stories on Ancestry.Com are only partly true. John Jarvis clearly did not have 16 children by two wives. The article: "John Jarvis and his two Sarah´s" seems to be a myth. There is no researcher that I know of giving any credible citations and most cite:
Ancestry.Com World Tree (a mix of truth and gossip)
Intl. records for birth, mg. & death. (not even a good lead)

Whether any of these trees are true is impossible to evaluate, but most seem to simply be copies of someone´s originals - and the original seems to have issues too. Why someone would post something they know little about has long been a mystery to me but this is rampant on Ancestry.Com and the LDS site as well.

There are many John Jarvis´s. Personally, I think the John mentioned in the Rev. War file never left Anne Arundel Co. MD. The census info below are only leads to help me find the truth.

Census, 1800 Annapolis, Anne Arundel, MD pg. 6/9
John Jarvis
1m <10, 1m >45
1fm 10-15, 1fm 16-25, 1fm 26-44
(1 son and 2 dau)

Census, 1810 Annapolis Co. Maryland, Anne Arundel pg. 4/5
John Jarvis
1m<10, 1m >45
1fm <10, 2fm 10-15, 1fm >45
1 slave
No other Jarvis in county.
Wife Ann would be abt. 52 if correct fam.
(This census, if the correct John, certainly matches the children mention by Ann Richards.)

Now, if you insist he is in Virginia in 1820:
Census, 1820 Harrison Co. VA pg. 5/30 (Aug. 7, 1820)
John Jarvis
5m <10, 1m 10-16, 1m 16-18, 1m >45
2fm17-26, 1fm >45
This would clearly be an elder John.
7 sons and 2 dau)
(This can not possibly be the same John as the one in 1810 MD, nor the John, husband of Ann Richards. The 5 sons under 10 are not possible at their ages, plus Ann Richards had only 5 total children.)

Many Jarvis researchers do cite his wife´s pension file ect. but even then they seem not to have read it. No one seems to have the correct death date for Ann, even though it is online and easily available.

I would like to take this opportunity to inform all Jarvis Researchers about the two Rev. War files for John and Ann Richards Jarvis:

1. John Jarvis died 13th March 1826.(no place mentioned)
2. Ann Jarvis was 83 in 1842 and resided in Baltimore, MD (Anne Arendel & Baltimore counties)
3. Ann testified that John enlisted as private in Capt. Bird Co. 1st. MD Regiment under command of Col. Otho A. Williams and served until wars end. He received pay for his service from John Hamilton, agent for the Maryland Line.
4. Ann´s surname was Ann Richards (Not Anne, and no mention of Sarah)
John Jarvis married Ann Richard Dec. 1879 by Rev. Walter Magowan in James Parish Anne Arundel Co.
5. Ann and John were parents of 5 children: Sophia, Eliza, Rosilla, John and Mary (no mention of my Thomas)
6. Ann has remained unmarried after John Jarvis died. (My note: (This strongly implies that he had no second marriage and that they were married when he died, prob. in Maryland. My personal feeling is that since she was testifying from Baltimore, Maryland, if he had died in VA, she would have so said)
7. The pay rolls of the Rev. kept by John Hamilton, Agent for the Maryland Line were found in the Land Office at Annapolis in 1842, confirming that John Jarrvis, a private, received $80 pay from the 1st. Jan 1782 to th 1st, Jan. 1783. No further record or muster roll found as to time he entered service.
8, Ann Jarvis, #5653 was admitted to pension roll Vol. A, pg. 371

Citation:
Md. Rev. War Pension Record, wife of John Jarvis (Ann) #W9331. Maryland #3784 giving testimony in 1842 as to why she should have pension.
This was after the Rev. Claim Act 4 July 1836.

------------

1. Ann Richards Jarvis seems to be John´s only wife.
2. She died not before 1800, nor early in 1800, nor was she abandoned by John as he migrated to VA. As she claimed his pension, she was the wife of record. (It is doubtful that John migrated anywhere)
3. Ann Jarvis died 10 June, 1852 in Anne Arundel Co. MD

Citation:
Index to Selected Final Payment Vouchers, 1818-1864
Veteran given name: Jarvis, John
Jarvis, Ann (John)
date of act: 1836
date of payment: 4th qtr. 1852
date of death 10 June 1852
Final payment voucher received from the General Accounting office
NARA, #2733385 Identifier 544/ Record group nr. 217
Records of the Accounting Officers of the Department of the Treasury, 1775 - 1978

These records (graphics of the originals) are clearly available on Fold3 - John Jarvis - 20 pages, as is the Rev. War Pension file for Samuel- 37 pages, in which he says his mother is Hannah and 99 years old in 1829.

Now, I would really appreciate it if anyone with a real source as to Thomas Jarvis parents would be kind enough to share. It is entirely possible that my Thomas Jarvis came from John´s line but his parents must have been in VA for him to have been born there in 1804. Could Thomas have been a son of John Jarvis Jr?

Duane Mills
Stavanger, Norway
Re: Elias Jarvis Port Washington NY m Pamela or Nellie Devoe/Deveaux

Lotta questions...not sure where to begin....
I do not have hard-copy proof that Daniel(1835) et al are the children of Daniel and Sally West. There is circumstantial evidence as follows: the 1820C N Hemp shows Daniel and Elias within 7 lines, close to a John West and in the area where David Jarvis was enumerated in the 1810 C. Per the "Records of the Reform Dutch Church..." David Jarvis(Jervis) died in April or Aug/9/1819(can't read my scribbles ,) killed while blasting rocks whereupon he lost "a hand, leg, thumb and eye. " I guess he bled to death. It is likely, therefore, that Elias became the head of the household which explains his 1820C appearance, with I might add , an elderly female, prob David's widow Elizabeth Cornelius. I remember seeing a few more references to David Jarvis in the N Hemp area .
David Jarvis (3/12/1759- 4/9/1819) and Elizabeth Cornelius(4/17/1763-3/21/1825) were married 10/7/1784 and had the following children:
Phebe..m Abraham John Manett
Elias..m Nellie Devoe or maybe Pamela ... Her nickname may have been "Mellie" and not "Nellie"
Ann....m Thomas Francis
Daniel..m Sally West
David...?
Sarah..poss m Charles Hewlett
Elizabeth..m Jacob Seaman
The above marriages mention two of the surnames you inquired about....I have not seen a connection to the Valentines.
Emma Sweeney may be Daniel's niece on his wife's side. I have not seen a Jarvis/Sweeney marriage. There was a Brooklyn marriage of a James Sweeney and Mary A Robinson in 1869...close to Emma's b/y. This Mary may be Amelia's sister?
Are you sure the pilot Daniel in Brooklyn is your Daniel? You have letters addressed to Daniel in Brooklyn from the names you mentioned? Reason I asked is there was another Daniel Jarvis in Brooklyn at the same time. I have not researched this however.
I have other incidental notes, but my typing skills are like 1 word-per-minute .
Have you tried the Reform Church records? The Brooklyn Eagle Online? The "Jarvis Family or the Descendents of..." (E-Book)? There is alot of info there and are sources for the above.
Regards,
C

From what I am told, He was living with his mother until maybe age 5. He then went to an orphanage until his father was out of the service. His dtr myrtle was told that me went to an orphanage because his mother (myrtle)died (she was an army nurse).

His father had then remarried Mildred. Then married a Sue. James had a brother Robert who married a woman Gussy and they had a dtr Ruth whom I think may be deceased.

James married Vada Fowler in WV. They lived in Texas at one point. There was dtr josephine who died at age 2 (she was before the other three children) and then they moved. Most of his time was in NY. I think he or vada were with the civil patrol but I have not found information on that. James died in 1968 from what sound like heart complications. Vada died in the late 1980s from renal and liver failure.

Daniel b 1744, was the son of John and Hannah Hill Jarvis who are listed on ship records as arriving in Baltimore in Jan 1750. They had John, Solomon, Philip, Daniel and etc. the 2 brothers John and Solomon (at least) served in the Revolutionary War. John and Solomon got land grants for their service. John took his land in VA, now WV, and Solomon took his in KY. Daniel and Philip and several sisters seemed to have moved to KY.

Hi, I am a Jarvis direct descendent of John and Hannah Hill, and direct from their oldest son John, older brother to Solomon. Both John and Solomon fought in the Revolutionary War and received land as payment after. John took his land in VA and Solomon took his land in KY. I just did a trace on a Jarvis family from Jarvis Store, KY and I believe that the unknown Nathaniel is actually Daniel b1744, another son of John and Hannah. Daniel has a son listed as Peter and Daniel also died in Clinton, KY which indicates he may have moved with his brother to KY after the war. I think that is accurate. Best, KJarvis
