Hello Bob, for some reason you have answered a message I put out in 2009, however you and I have already corresponded some 10 years ago in 2002!! You replied to a message I put out on a Kingsbury Episcopi site and you and John Jeanes sent me some wonderful details of the Jeanes family. You worked out that your wife and I are 4th cousins.

For some reason I lost touch with both you and John about the time he was setting off travelling, I am delighted to see that you are still on the Jeanes hunt, I must admit that I got bogged down somewhat whilst trying to sort out the Dimmocks.

I am attempting to finalise my searches on the Jean9)s family and get everything down on paper.

I would love to hear from you again and my e mail address is ja_darcy@hotmail.com

reegards Joan

Hi Joan,
My wife is a descendant of Joseph Jeanes. Her great grandfather was Job Hallett from Kingsbury Episcopi. I also know that he came to Adelaide in South Australia with a Manning and a Dimmock. I have considerable info re many of these families in Adelaide. I am going away for awhile tomorrow but will try to check any messages.
Cheers
Bob

When I saw your query I thought I'd answer. First, my mother in law's mother is a deadend so far as far as parents even though I was told her siblings, I'm not sure of her parents. I do have a picture of John O'Neal Jeanis with his brother in law, Oscar Bellard just before he left for the war.

The strange thing is this, Mae said her mother's mother's name was Julia and that she was from Ireland and died when a baby, I am assuming it was Heloise, was born in Orange, Orange Co, TX and that an old couple came from LA and picked up the baby and carried her back on horseback. Heloise was born 23 Dec 1882 in Church Point, LA.

I am trying to locate the final resting place of my great great grandparents, George Washington Moore and Martha Elizabeth Jeanes. George was born about 1829 in Tennessee. Martha was born about 1837 in McNairy County, TN. Her parents were Jesse Paul Jeanes and Martha Canzator Prather. The last record I have of them is in 1880. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Mike Moore
Oro Valley, AZ

I cannot even advise the names of his parents.
I think he once told me he was born in Somerset, although his parents were at the time resident in Tonyrefail. What the circumstances were leading to this I have no idea.
Regards, Mike Jeanes.

Did he ever marry and have children?

At a local flea market, I found an original deed on vellum that transfers property from William Deal (a Sheriff in Philadelphia) to Joshua T. Jeanes dated September 14, 1852. The deed also mentions Anna T. Deal and Mary Deal.

I would appreciate learning more about Joshua T. Jeanes, and was wondering if a published biography exists.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

From the lack of a will you can't tell whether he had children or not. He might have died suddenly. Or some families just were more diligent about making wills than others. Usually, though, if he left a widow the letters of administration would be granted to her, often along with someone else to help her. So the fact that the letters in 1805 were not granted to a widow suggests that she had died before him (if in fact this Isaac had been married, which we don't know for sure).

According to my notes, the Isaac Jeanes who was the son of Joseph Jeanes and Sarah Roberts, was born in 1758 and lived in Abington. If he is the Isaac Jeanes who died in 1805 in Philadelphia County, he left no will, and letters of administration were granted to Joseph Jeanes, possibly his brother.

From the administration books at City Hall, Phila.
Feb. 26, 1805. Letters of Administration to Joseph Jeanes and Jesse Thoreson? on the estate of Isaac Jeanes, carter. Sureties were George Thomas and Thomas S. Field, both merchants of Philadelphia.

Jeanes/Janes from Ireland to Pennsylvania 1700s

I am researching the family of Frances Jeanes or Janes, who married William Baker (1714-1785) as his second wife in 1755, probably in Pennsylvania. According to a record in the possession of the Cumberland County Historical Society in Nova Scotia (where one of William's sons emigrated), she was the daughter of a Robert Janes of Marshcreek, York Co., Pennsylvania, who was originally from County Derry, Ireland. Does anyone have any information on the family of Robert, or other Jeanes/Janes in those areas in the 1700s?

I also found a record in the Pennsylvania Archives that one of William Baker and Frances Jeanes' sons, Hance Baker (1760-1831), an ensign in the Bucks County (PA) militia, sought permission from Pennsylvania's Executive Council on Feb. 5, 1783 to go to New York (then in the hands of the British) and from there on to Nova Scotia to visit his brother on family business. [His half-brother Charles Baker had lived in Nova Scotia for many years.] A Joseph Jeanes sought permission to go to the same destinations on the same day, no reason given. Hance Baker was given permission (if he paid a hefty bond) but Joseph Jeanes was refused permission. My theory is that Joseph Jeanes and Hance Baker were cousins, through Hance's mother Frances Jeanes. Does anyone know anything about Joseph Jeanes? He would presumably have also lived in Bucks County or thereabouts.
At the time I read it as Janes, but now I think it was Zane.
I have never been able to find any connection between the New Jersey Jeanes family and family of William in Moreland.
It is intriguing to see that there is a large Janes family in early Massachusetts, where some of the common names are William and Abel.
And I have never been able to substantiate the rumor that William Jeanes and his brothers came from New Rochelle. I think this was based on people assuming the name was French, whereas it is common in England, especially in Dorset and Somerset.
Cheers,
Sue

Thanks for contacting me. I spent a year in Philadelphia in 2002 at the Pennsylvania Historical Society researching this family and found a lot of references to the French connection as well as references to the Jeanes family being English. None of it was sourced. I went back and reviewed my notes and found the following which I wrote and may provide clues to the father and brothers of William Jeanes. Let me know your thoughts.

"Who his father and two brothers were, I do not yet know for sure, but I did find records of early Jeanes who could be related to William. In Philadelphia Will Book B, page 98, I found the administration of the estate of Joseph Jeanes who died intestate. Letters of administration were granted 13 February 1712/3 to William Jeanes of Bucks County to administer the estate of this Joseph Jeanes.
William Sluby was executor of the will of a Nathaniel Jeanes of Penns Neck, Salem County, New Jersey on 5 February 1702/3. He was William Slooby of Philadelphia County, when he conveyed to Jasper Yeates of Chester County a 600 acre plantation on Lucas Point in Penns Neck on 21 July 1709.
At the Abington Monthly Meeting of 27 September 1714, Robert Jeanes and Jane Satterthwaite were given permission to marry. Robert could have been a brother of William."

I you do use this information, I'd appreciate it if you would cite me as the source. Thanks. Ron Miller, Madison Wisconsin.
Jeanes Family

I am descended from Joseph Jeanes and Sarah Roberts through their daughter, Esther Jeanes, who married Nathan Thomas who died in Abington, PA. I recently saw a list of earliest settlers of New Haven, CT and it included a William Jeanes in about 1643. Could he be the father of the William Jeanes who married Esther Brewer. I recall looking at some notes of a relative of mine which traced the Jeanes family back to colonial Connecticut. I have had no luck with researching Sarah Roberts either. I have her d/o/b as 9/10/1716 but nothing definite as to her parents.
Would appreciate some info on this.

My Jean(es)came from East Lambrook, and Kingsbury Episcopi and the reg. district was Langport. I go back to Joseph Jeans born circa 1705 in Kingsbury and he married a Ann Trinoch in 1730, descendants did in fact go to Australia.

I will send further details later but unfortunately I will be unable to do so for a couple of days. regards Joan

Hi Steve, I am in the US and several of us have been trying to research our connections back to England.

I have done some research on the Dorset and Somerset families primarily in the 1500-1700's. Most of our American Jeanes and Janes ancestors left England in the 1600's, so our research has focused on that time period.

We have a fairly large dna database, as we can't find paper documentation.

Our dna efforts have managed to connect the Cornwall Jane family to our Jean/Jane family of Virginia.

We have hoped to get other Jeanes and Janes families in England to test, in order to connect to our heritage but also in order figure out which families from different counties were connected.

What connection in the US were you looking at?

Renee Newman

David,
Hi, I have researched the earlier Jeanes in and near Yeovil from around 1500's to early 1700's. I believe a William Jeanes who died in the 1560's and John Jeanes who died in the 1550's were brothers. There descendants were hard to separate and both had ties to Yeovil.

My ancestors came to the US back in the 1600's. As did many Jeanes families.

We have a fairly large dna project and have hoped to get some families in England to test, so some of us in the US could figure out where we fit in the families back in England.

Anyway when I opened your message it allowed me to see other messages re the Jean(e)s family I never realised that some of them had moved to WAles. I am at the moment trying to tidy up my tree and there are still one or two loose ends so if you get this perhaps we can compare notes. regards Joan D'Arcy

Hi Sue
I'm not sure whether this is the same Jeanes family as I am tracing. My last verifiable family member was Henry Jeanes who appears to have been born in 1831 in Brighton. According to his marriage certificate, his father was daniel jeanes, who was a shipwright. Henry married Sarah Gillard on December 24, 1854 in St Lukes Parish church, Chelsea. If you want to keep in touch concerning the jeanes family history, I will be happy to share info. with you. My email address is dwjeanes@btinternet.com
Regards David Jeanes

Hi, We have Jeanes ancestors too. Our William Jeanes was born in Mudford, near Yeovil in about 1829 and moved to Barton St David. One of his sons was Boaz, who is easy to trace because of the unusual christian name, but I am getting stuck with the many Williams, Harrys, Thomas' etc. I would like to get back before William of Mudford to find his parents and siblings. Anyone out there with any information?
Interesting to read about the Hugeonot link - we have heard this but did not know if it was true. Is it to do with glove making? (Our William was an agricultural labourer)

Sue

Hi Kirsten,

Yes, we are definitely related. Were you at the family reunion at Alan and Raewynne's home in New Zealand in 1998? I was there for that one but not the 100 years one in 2000. I have all of Alan's family tree findings here and the birth date is one that Alan had noted. I have Annie's mother's name as Jemima and her father as John James Jeanes.

Any photos you have of Annie would be great to see. Are you on Facebook at all? Yes, I do know Aunt Daisy, she lives in Perth, although I haven't seen her since 1998 at the reunion. My email address is graydsvj@optusnet.com.au if you would like to email directly. Are you located in NZ or Aust or somewhere else in the world. I am the granddaughter of Grant Arvidson and Vera Blake.

Be lovely to keep in touch with you if you have the time.

Cheers
Shelley

Have you had any further luck? Do you know Daisy Arvidson of Ausralia... Last surviving daughter of Annie and Knut

Kirsten (granddaughter of Roy Arvidson)
ps are you sure about Annie's birth date as our is different.
ps
