Martha, great to hear from you. Yes, still researching the Alfred Jenks and Barton Howard Jenks people. I have had great success on finding out numerous facts, references to them in history books, patents, etc. I just purchased an Alfred Jenks and Son 1862 Smithfield musket! I am so excited!

So, your husband, Bob and myself are 'cousins'! I am a great great great granddaughter of Alfred. My great great was William Alfred Jenks, brother to Barton Howard Jenks. WoW! Neat stuff. Where do you live? I live in Missouri now. But, was born in Norristown, Pa.

My tree name is 'Oelschlager'. My paternal grandmother, Norine Jenks married George Long Oelschlager. Her daddy was a son of William, Barton Howard Jenks, a name sake for his brother, Col. Barton Howard Jenks. The Col's son died in infancy in 1850. Col. Barton had his portrait painted by Renoir! I got a 'poster' copy of it hanging over my gun. Love this genealogy stuff. I'm hooked.

Please keep in touch...would love to share more, and any facts or stuff you know would be greatly appreciated!

Margee McGee

I'm looking for information on my grandfather, George Walter Jenks, born April 1851 in Rhode Island, married Tamar Adelaide Gail, lived in Hennepin County, Minn., had 2 sons, George E. (my father) and William G. I have some information on him, but he seems to disappear about 1904. I haven't been able to find anything on him after that date, and no record of his death. The search is complicated by the fact that there were several George W. Jenks born in Rhode Island during the decade of the 1850's. If anyone has any information on him, I would appreciate hearing from you.

It was dated Feb 24 1811 so the death of his wife's Aunt Jenks would have been before that date and probably no earlier than the autumn of 2010.
"She(Sarah Russell Gladdings) likewise informed me of the death of Betey’s Aunt Jenkes.
I can't help you identify the aunt, but I can tell you what the Jenks-Howland connection is (or at least what A Jenks-Howland connection is -- there could well be more than one).

John Howland & Elizabeth Tilley (Mayflower passengers) had a daughter Hannah Howland who married Jonathan Bosworth. Their daughter Hannah Bosworth married Nathaniel Jenks. According to my records, both Hannah Bosworth and Nathanial Jenks died in 1723, long before that letter was written.

Perhaps the aunt in question was a descendant of Hannah Bosworth and Nathanial Jenks -- but I couldn't even begin to guess which child of theirs might be the ancestor of that aunt.

It could of course be the case that it would be easier to identify the aunt starting first from this Zebulon and his wife.

Hezekiah Brown was born 7 May 1725. So, Daniel died no sooner than 9 months before this. Since it was quite common for men to re-marry soon after their wife's death, especially is there were small children in the home, I would peg Patience's death closer to the end of the 10 year range.

Thanks. I found one source w Daniel Brown's date of death 1721, indicating that Mary Sprague married William Jenckes sometime after that.
I also concluded that Patience Sprague must have died after 1711, the year she had her last child.
So, that gives us a 10 year range, and seems to be the best I can discover so far.
I also notices the two sisters have the same date of death reported in a lot of the documentation -- probably not true. I have that Mary and William were married 3 Feb 1727. I believe Patience had already passed away. This date is after the birth of her last (10th) child. Daniel Brown (Mary's first husband) died prior to 1726.
William Jenckes married first Patience Sprague (b. 1674), then her sister, Mary Sprague Brown(a widow) (b. 1697). Almost all of the ancestry.com records show identical dates of death for the two sisters. That can't be so. Do you have a date of death for Patience Sprague Jenckes or a date of marriage for William Jenckes and Mary Sprague Brown Jenckes?
Martha, I too am a descendant. I have learned quite a bit about Barton. You can see him on my 'Oelschlager' tree. My grandmother Norine was a Jenks, her father being a name sake for Barton having the same name.

Hi,

I just posted an old advertisement for "profiles," or silhouette portraits, in which W. BACHE announces his impending departure from Salem, MA, but that Mr. NIXON will remain in Salem "a short time longer" to paint portraits. The Profile & Painting room was located over the store of Daniel JENKS.

This was scanned from an original issue (NOT microfilm!) of The Essex Register newspaper (Salem, Massachusetts) dated October 29, 1810, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/bache-profiles08291810essexma.html
I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com/old_news_ma.html
http://theoldentimes.com/ads.html
http://theoldentimes.com
Her married name was Jenks. But as far as I know she never lived in Liverpool. She lived mainly around Warrington. Her Grandmother lived in Liverpool Road. I would be interested to have the postcards if you think this is the same person. You can e-mail me sueday1@hotmail.co.uk.
Re: Jenks or Jenckes Herefordshire England

I am not a descendant of this family. I developed a short interest of a Descendant who married into another line I am interested in, then that family seemed to disappear. So I spent a day or so investigating the various descendants of John Pleasant Jenks at least as far at the 1930 Census. I noted on both the Genealogy.com Jenks Board and to a lesser degree the Ancestry.com Jenks Board that various descendants had done an excellent job of describing various descendants of John P Jenks Father, William Jenks, Immigrant from Herefordshire, England except for the family of John P. Information on that family was very incomplete, spotty, unorganized and incomplete. So just for fun, I spent a day completing much of the empty space on this family and am posting it on both Jenks Family Boards. For anyone interested in greater details, Sources, etc you can visit RootsWeb, World Connect Project Home Page, and at the spot where you see “jump to a specific Database” enter in the box edclgenealogy1 and go to the Jenks Surname in the Tree that appears. Just make sure the Database has been updated after the date of this Post as I have not yet uploaded the new information.

Descendants of John Pleasant Jenks 1829 - abt.1916

1 John Pleasant Jenks 1829 - 1915 b: 07 Jul 1829 in Pearisburg, Giles Co., VA d: Aft. 11 Jan 1915 in Prob Lebanon, Russell Co., VA
.. +Elizabeth Jane David ? - 1855 d: 19 Feb 1855
...... 2 Marietta Elizabeth Jenks 1852 - 1862 b: 06 Nov 1852 in VA d: 13 Aug 1862 in Russell Co., VA
*2nd Wife of John Pleasant Jenks:
.. +Mary S Thomas 1833 - 1900 b: Abt. 1833 in Montgomery Co., VA d: 21 Feb 1900 in Russell Co., VA
...... 2 Manderville Jenks 1855 - 1855 b: 04 Feb 1855 in Russell Co., VA d: 04 Feb 1855 in VA
...... 2 Allice Geneva Jenks 1856 - 1856 b: Abt. 1856 in Russell Co., VA d: 13 Jul 1856 in VA
...... 2 Medora Jenks 1857 - 1857 b: 09 May 1857 in Russell Co., VA d: 04 Aug 1857 in Russell Co., VA
...... 2 John Pleasant Jenks 1858 - 1862 b: 01 Nov 1858 in Russell Co., VA d: 01 Aug 1862 in Russell Co., VA
...... 2 William B Jenks 1861 - 1915 b: Abt. 1861 in Russell Co., VA d: Bet. 1915 - 1920
...... 2 Kate Virginia Jenks 1865 - 1866 b: Abt. 1865 in Russell Co., VA d: 06 Aug 1866 in Russell Co., VA
...... 2 Charles Manderville Jenks 1866 - 1941 b: Abt.

In my research, I have found many spellings for Jenks.
Jenks, Jencks, Jenckes, Jinx etc. Often in the same family.
This mostly is in the 1600's through 1700's.
It has been discussed and proven that names that us researchers discover were not written by our ancestors but rather the person recording the record. So in other words, they recorded what they thought would be the spelling and went by what they heard not necessarily the correct spelling. So...no matter what you think you are looking for, you have to think outside the box and use your imagination to discover you records.
Not as accurate then as it is now.
Confused? Sorry but this has been my experience.
It has been our experience with researching our JENKS family (English spelling) that when they came over from Europe to North America, they often changed their name to the 'JINKS' spelling. So, we have to research both: Jenks for pre-immigration, and Jinks for after-immigration. I have no idea why the name changed.

I'm looking for family of Thomas Jinks/Jenks born in Stafford, England in 1840. He immigrated I believe to New York State but eventually lived and died in Southern Ontario, Canada (Hamilton Wentworth County). He was married to Hannah Higgs.

Bela Whipple Jencks - NH to Calif. Daughter Maria Wike

I am looking for information my GG grandfather, Bela Whipple Jencks, born in NH around 1827 and apparently left for the gold rush in about 1850. He went to Orleans, Klamath California where he was known as B. W. Jencks. He become a county clerk and is also listed as a lawyer. He apparently married a Klamath indian woman. I would like to know more about her -name unknown. In the 1880 census he is listed as a widower living with his 11 year old daughter Maria (my gg grandmother) who is listed as Indian. Is his father Bela Whipple Jecks born in 1785 in Newport NH and died in Sullivan NH in 1860? Maria Jencks married William Wike, a miner from Illinois and they lived in Sawyers Bar, California with their children, John Striker Wike (my Grandfather), Ruth and Helen. Ruth married two times - Cramer and Markon. My grandfather, John or Johnnie as he was known died in Boston from his injuries in WWI. He met my grandmother Mable Cox when he was in the Chelsea naval hospital. CAn anyone provide any infromation on any of these people? If so, Iw ould appreciate it very much.

Jenks, Barbara D.

Looking for information on Barbara D. Jenks-DOB 1926 or 1927, mother of Florence Blanche Jenks-DOB 7/29/48-Union, New York-Broome Co., in Springer Private Hospital. Barbara may have been a waitress-she had an older son, and probably lived with her mother. Her husband (?) allegedly deserted the family, circa 1948. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Could this be Harry A. Jenks? If so, I'd lost your former e-mail address. In both cases I still would be delighted to have you contact me. Current e-mail address is cchadwic1@optonline.net. I spend April to mid Oct. in NY, tel. 516-797-8898 and from Oct. to Apr. in FL, tel. 863-956-8898 -- the e-mail address is the same in both places. In 2008 I didn't spend any time in FL due to various health issues, but managed to return there from Jan. 2010 to Apr. and hope to resume my yearly sojurns.

Sincerely, Carol Chadwick
