I know very little about my family background.
I had a falling out with my parents, so I am starting
from scratch with my research. I think my grandfather was
James George Jervis but I don't have any other information about
him. My father Robin Jervis had a brother but I am
not sure of his name. Any family tree info you can
give me would be appreciated, so that I can research it. We know very little. we are
basically starting from scratch.

Yours Sincerely,
Jason Jervis or Annette Jervis
Hi Patricia,

I have a great deal of old scanned-in family papers on Herc C Jarvis including ancestry and personal info by his grand-daughter Caroline (my great great aunt). Let me know if you're interested and I can email them to you. I've attached his family tree here so that we know we're talking about the same guy!
Cheers
Steven

Southport Colliery St Helens, Lancs, UK was indeed part of the Parr Colleries, Parr Nos 3 and 4 were known as Southport colliery - 1982 - 1936. Did your family member ever live in Canada?
Hi, This photo may well be related to my Jervis family who lived in the Parr/St Helens area of Liverpool, Lancashire. Could you scan the photo and email to me please. I will also check the Mine records, as he was a Manager will be able to find more details that way. I live in England, if you are willing to post to me.

Hi, I live inMelbourne, Australia. My late grandfather, William Tunstall was from Manchester. I have found a post-card size photo of a man in a suit and an almost indistinct pencil note on the back that says "Jim Jervis, Manager Southport Mines (? this word) Parr, St. Helens."

Does this belong to anyone's family - happy to post it to them. It is pasted on a dark grey backing which has, in silver writing underneath the picture, the words CABINET PORTRAIT. Hope this is helpful to someone.
Jan

Hello.. my name is Greta jervis Pfeiffer. I am the natural daughter to kenneth earl jervi that you have contacted me about.. I just came onto the message you posted over a year ago to me.. I havent done alot of my geneology until just recently and I happened to come onto your message to me. how is it that you came to send me a message about kenneth jervi through ancestry.com?
I am so sorry to hear that he married your sister. she is just so young and he is such a manipulator and very abusive and hurtful. (i mean you and your sister are old enough to be my children)plus, I do believe that a person should stay within their own age group when marrying a partner.. that is just sick!!! if he is my natural father, then he would be close to 70 years old now.. you asked about details about him. i havent seen him for over 25 years, I prefer it this way as does the rest of our entire family.. I only contact you in hopes that your sister is safe and away from him. I tried to contact you through my home phone but wasnt able to get through the line becasue it is a international call.
Mr. Kenneth earl jervi was born kenneth earl Jervis son to Myrtle blanche thomas and George harrison jervis of Bellfountaine ohio on april 1 1940.. he had 12 other siblings. most have died.. as a youth he was sent to a reform school and then he went into the US navy. From what I have been told through a cousin of mine.. He was always getting sent to one ship or another becasue he would get into trouble and get disciplined.. He served in the us navy in came home to columbus ohio in 1961 and later met my mother charlene dye of columbus, ohio the met at the state mental hospital. my mother worked there in the laundry dept and was attending classes for nursing.. ken had much older sister who was a patient there, her name was christina, they bumped into each other in the hallway. this is how they met. later..they married on june 1 1963 and later i was born in 1964 in columbus ohio.. after myself, there were 3 other children ( boys ) born in this marriage.. my parents moved us to Utah (usa) and raised us all there.. we didnt know our relatives on his side of the family at all. we kept in touch with my maternal g parents. ken was abusive and hurtful to us all. we covered up for all of the abuse and hurts and lied to family and friends. we didnt talk people about our home issues and we also were threatened that if we said anything we'd get beat even more!! we put up with so much through the years and becasue of his actions against us all it still effects us today in different ways. my mother finally got away from him and they got divorced in 1984. you asked about his past jobs that he held.. i believe that he worked as a door to door salesman, also he was butcher in a meat shop... he had his own tree removal lanscaping buisness in the70's to 80's I dont remmeber him ever having real steady work at all and that we went without alot of the basic needs that we needed..
he always had us children helping him to do landscape and tree removal work with him. at all times of the year and had us pulled out of school just to go and to complete a job with him..our childhood was very sad with him in it.. we lived a very frightened and scared lifestyle. One time he cut up his arm from a chainsaw that was still running.. he let go of the chainsaw and it bounced off the tree limb hitting him several times in the arm and leg.. I believe it was his right arm and right foot ankle area. we drove to the hospital and the entire way there I was hoping that he would just die so that when we got home we would all have our nightmare over with and not have him in our world any more. I was about 15 then... i dont trust him and never will trust him. we moved around alot to differnt places while I was growing up..always the lights were being turned off or there was no heat in our home or other things were in chaos..

he was always very smart when it came to doing math and using numbers, but he couldnt spell out words at all. he always had me to come to and ask me to type up his letters for his job and landscaping estimated that he would have to give to clients.. i was approx.. 13 yrs old at that time...
I heard through my mother that ken had taken money that was his mothers' money and he was to be the exector of her estate and to split the money equally amoung her remaining living children.. but he didnt do that he pocketed the money and never gave his siblings their share.( this was back in 1982) when I was a senior in high school and ready to graduate he told me that I could start all over in a new school ect.. and graduate under a new name of Greta Jervi. I told him that I wouldnt do it becasue I wanted to graduate in the next few months. I believe he was running from creditors at the time.. in a conversation that my mother had with him and i saw, she told him that if he kept being so hard on all of us ( his kids) that he was just digging his own grave and nailing himself into his own coffin by the ways that he treated us all and that he would die a very sad and lonely old man with no one to turn to and no where to hide. I imagine this is what has happened to him.. he hasnt ever stopped his bad behavior has he? He was abusive to me . One time ( when I was 18 yrs old) he had beaten me so badly that he bloodied my face and my contact lense broke in my left eye. he kept me confined to the house for almost 2 weeks and I wasnt allowed to go out of the home or use the telephone. he monitored everything that I did, one day the police came to our door and asked if I was there and he said that he dint have a daughter named Greta jervis that our last name was jervi.. not jervis..but I quickly came around the corner all bruised and beaten up and stood in front of the police officer and told him who I was and that my father had beaten me this way. of course the police offered to take me to saftey and get me out of the home but I told them that if I left, i would be leaving my mother and 3 younger brothers with him and so i couldnt leave them. If there's anyone who knows what kind of abuse and rage this man has it is my family.. due to him beating me, my left eye has scarring in it which cant be repaired and I am blind in that one eye.after a few weeks the bruises were still able to be seen and he took photos of me, telling me to 'smile"
at my graduation he made a fool out of himself coming up and trying to take photos of me ect.. and later it was discoverd he never even had any film in the camera.
this is not all that has taken place but only some of what i choose to share..
the only ways that will help your sister is to get her away from him quickly if that hasnt already happened.. if he has done anything at all to anyone that needs to get reported to the police. I am not certain of the laws in your country but I hope that they take abuse seriously. i have not seen from Kenneth earl jervis "jervi" since 2 days before I was married. I now have been married to my husband for over 25 years.he has never been involved in my life since then and never had the opportunity to be involved in my children's lives either.
my children are all now grown adults beginning their own families and lives and they have each been told about Ken Jervis and they have no desire to seek him out and to know him.
the man they consider their grandpa was my mother's 2nd husband, stepfather to me.. we were very close to one another. sadly he died many years ago..
I have had to deal with some very dark and hurtful things that he has done to me and to my family members and I had to turn all power to God to just have him deal with it all becasue when he dies he will meet his maker!! that will be justice enough for me. but I still have no desire to be in his life or him into mine!!
you stated that your sister and him had only chatted for 2 months before she met him. how did he connect with her? email? yahoo messenger? myspace? facebook? I am not surprised to hear that he is in the philippines due to the fact that when he was in the us navy (1959- 1960) he would get to got to the philippines and took many photos that I remember looking at in books as a child.. He served on the US ship o bannen and he was a navy chef/ cook for the entire crew. he also was a boxer in the navy too.. one of his common phrases he would use in speaking.. was.. 'friend' he would say this with a distinct letter "t' on the end so that it was pronounced FRIENDT.. and he would say this in a very condensending way and especially if he was angry.. his anger could burst at any moment and time. it would scare the devil himself.
from what i have seen On-line he has been married to several other women through the past 25 years.. I have never met any of them at all.. one of the last things he said tome was to always look behind me, to the sides or in front of me because when i would he would be there and he would kill me. I believe that this is what he would do to me or any other person that he tried to control and demean like he did to me..
He was very racist to others of differnet religions and colors of skin..especialy to blacks and to hispanic individuals. but he was married to a woman who had adopted children of differnt nationalities and also married again to another woman who was chinese or japenese. and now to a philipino young woman...I do know that he was excommunicated from the church that we were all raised in
( the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints) ( mormon church)
It would be very helpful to me and my family if you might have current photos of him to be able to email or send so that we can verify that it is him.. if he is still around be very careful becasue he could do alot of harm to you all. he is a manipulator and will rob you and your family blind.. especially your sister. it would be best for you to not mention anything to him about me contacting you and replying to you at all. I dont want to be contacted by him at all, and if i am contacted then I will have suspicion to believe that you gave him information about me..
he cares nothing about the people that he hurts but only about his own personal gain.. seeing this information has me concerned for your sister and i hope that for her sake she has nothing to do with him and moves forward with her own life.
I believe that he possibly came there to the philippines to get out of whatever trouble he was/is in here in the USA and used marrying your sister to get a "green card" or dual citizenship... possibly might be best for your sister to also contact me back too. Im not trying to judge but this all seems a little overwhelming to find out.. I literally shook and cried when I saw the posted info..
if you have information to share and any photos please send them to my email at gpfeiffer63@yahoo.com hope this has helped ..thank you Greta Pfeiffer

Thank you very much, that was most helpful. I've always known that they had issue but have never found any information on them. I have around 2000 individuals in my Jervis family tree (all descended from James Jervys b. abt 1490) should you require any more information. I am descended from the Admiral's uncle Thomas Jervis (b. 24 Oct 1699, d. 14 Oct 1759) and wife Mary Dutch (d. 18 Jun 1782).

I have exported my tree as a GEDCOM for you. References are given where possible e.g. Census data, GRO Index etc. I have made the living individuals private purely because the file is freely available on the 'net. Hopefully it will be of use to you.

Re: The Family of Admiral John Jervis

Do you have any documentation to show that William Jarvis is the son of Swynfen Jervis and Elizabeth Parker? Burke's and Debrett's both show William to be married to a Jane Hatrell from Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. Due to the marriage date it is perfectly plausible that Jane Hatrell is his second wife.

I have had a look through the IGI and have found a Stephen Henry Jarvis b. 16 Jun 1748, Woodchurch, Nr. Tenterden, Kent. The information comes from a family group record submitted by a member of the LDS Church. The second reference is an Ancestral File which has not been verified against any official records. The second reference shows Stephen married Diana Kingsworth and that his parents are William Jarvis & Elizabeth. William Jarvis is then shown to be the son of Swynfen Jarvis and Elizabeth Parker.

I performed a quick search on the internet and found reference to a Dinah Kingsnorth b. c1759 to parents Henry Kingsnorth & Elizabeth Moore. She is shown to marry Stephen Jarvis and from there the trees are the same. The site is http://alft.net/familyhistory/kingsnorth.htm There's also another site with a Stephen Jarvis and Diana Kingsnorth marriage: http://www.nor.com.au/users/sbrown/surnames.htm Neither indicate a link with the Jervis family.

Having looked through census records and the GRO Index this branch does indeed spell their surname Jarvis rather than Jervis. The Jarvis branch is located in rural Kent which is quite unusual. The Jarvis family tend to be employed as servants, gardeners etc which again is unusual considering their father William is from a Landed family. The marriage date of 20 May 1740 for William Jervis and Elizabeth Darby is also makes the link questionable as William Jervis would only have been 12!

William was the first-born child of Swynfen Jervis and Elizabeth Parker therefore as a rule he should have inherited his parent's estate/wealth. If he didn't have any children the estate would pass to his brother John Jervis (the Earl) upon his death and John did indeed inherit. My personal view is that Jarvis family are not connected to the Jervis family through Swynfen Jervis and Elizabeth Parker.

I uploaded the GEDCOM as an attachment so I was hoping it would show up next to the post. It can be viewed with any genealogy software however I have been using Family Tree Maker 2006. I believe you can also upload the GEDCOM to your ancestry profile to view. If you cannot see the attachment I can e-mail it to you. My e-mail address is jervis.genealogy@ntlworld.com

I have actually relocated to Cheshire within the last couple of years so I might try and find Willaston Hall. Darlaston Hall no longer exists however Meaford Hall is still standing. The old barns at the front of the hall have been made into new homes. The Hall itself is currently undergoing refurbishment. Have you seen the surname profiler? The link is http://www.spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames/Surnames.aspx

Re: DARLASTON HALL

William Jervis of Meaford puchased Darlaston in 1655. This William Jervis was probably the eldest son of John & Elizabeth Jervys of Chatcull. William's nephew, John Jervis, married Mary Swynfen. Their eldest son, another John, is credited as being the ancestor of the Jervises of Darlaston. A younger son, Thomas, is listed as being the ancestor of the Jervises of Darlaston and Chatcull. A third son, Swynfen, was the Earl st. Vincent's father.

The last Jervis to own the Darlaston Estate was John Swynfen St. Vincent Jervis. John sold the estate in 1881 when he married for the second time. His wife, Jessie Elizabeth Benbow, was his 18 year old parlour maid! Darlaston Hall was demolished in 1951 but the estate remains. The road/track up to the former gate house is named Jervis Lane. There's a pub on a nearby roundabout named the Darlaston Inn.

John Swynfen St. Vincent's father was Swynfen Stevens Jervis and he supposedly inherited Darlaston from his second cousin. His family were living at Darlaston at the time of the 1851 census. He is incorrectly listed as "Stonifa Jervis" if you wish to take a look. The previous owner was yet another John Jervis. Considering John Edward Jervis (formerly Ricketts) inherited from the Earl of St. Vincent the manor of Aston and "all other real property" in 1823, I presume John Edward is the correct John Jervis. John Edward Jervis' great uncle was the Earl of St. Vincent. Swynfen Stevens Jervis is John Edward Jervis' 3rd cousin.

Hello Graham,

I don't know if you can help but I am researching the Jarvis family who were in some way related to Admiral John Jervis.

I have a brother and sister, John and Sarah Jarvis born about 1778 and connected to Montgomeryshire, Wales.
John Jarvis served in the Royal Montgomery Militia and before that in the Essex Fencibles. He died suddenly in 1808 leaving a widow with 6 children and no money (having lost it all in a wine venture in London) and no Military Pension. He is mentioned as a relative of Earl St Vincent and in fact one of his sons was baptised Vincent Robert Jarvis. Another of his sons was Hercules Crosse Jarvis (one time Mayor of Capetown) and reputedly related to Admiral John Jervis. Admiral John Jervis is also said to have offered another son of John Jarvis a Commission. My relative is a daughter of John Jarvis - Sophia Saint Ives Mary Jarvis who married Nicolas Duus, the first Danish Consul in Shanghai.

Do you have any knowledge of how my family could tie in with Earl St Vincent?

I would be most grateful for any help you could give.

Patricia

Burke's LG names Maria Anne Anderson's father as William Anderson. There's an extracted marriage entry in the IGI for a William Anderson & Anna Maria Cooper on 13 Dec 1764 at St. Leonard, Eastcheap (Cheapside) in London. This couple had 12 children in total; 7 boys & 5 girls. Maria Anne was their 4th child, but first daughter, and was christened 26 Jun 1771 at St. Leonard, Eastcheap.

Maria Anne's issue is documented in Burke's LG as mentioned in the post above. Based on Elizabeth Anderson's marriage date, maybe it would be worth investigating whether William & Elizabeth were brother & sister?

I had an uncle, Arthur Jervis, who emigrated from the Liverpool/Widnes area in about 1950 to Adelaide together with his wife Edie and their son Brian. I have tried to find out what happened to them but with no success.
Geoff

Jervis/Jarvis of Stone, Staffordshire

I was tempted to put this query onto an exiating thread regarding the Jervis of the Stone area but felt no, try a new thread,

I have traced my ancestors to Thomas Jarvis who passed away in 1782 and was buried in Barcheston, Warwickshire shortly after his wife Catherine who also died in 1782 and buried in the same place,

In the will of Thomas Jarvis reference is made to property and money in Willington near Barcheston. But Thomas also refers to other property and this is I think pertinent to the Jervis/Jarvis of Stone.

Quotes from the will:-

"and also other of my estates in Staffordshre"

" my son Samuel (born in 1745 in Barcheston but referred to as Jervis)in which he now lives dituate and living in the parish of Stone in the county of Stafford"

"unto my grandson Thomas son of my son Samuel all that....... now lives and situate in the parish of Stone in the county of Stafford"

These references lead me to believe that further tracing of my ancestors leads me to Stone. I have no details of the DOB or marriage of Thomas to Catherine or any details relating to his wife not even the maiden name. Thomas and Catherine had a son John born in 1736 in Willington, which may indicate the name of Thomas's father or grandfather as it appears John may be the oldest. I think this may indicate that he marriage tok place about 1730 +/- 5-10 years and DOB 1700 +/- 10 years.

Does anyone have any information from their researches of the Jervis living in and about Stone which may assist me in tracing more of my ancestors.

Thank you

Robert Jarvis

Hi Pamela
I think we have a common relative. My Peter Jervis (my GG Grandfather was born in Mucklestone in 1853 and married Louisa Barnett(?). I am descended from their daughter Margaret (b 1881).
If you have any information you can share with me I would be most grateful since all but one of Margaret's children including my grandad William are no longer with us and I am a bit stuck on a couple of family mysteries.
Regards

Karen

Re: The Family of Admiral John Jervis

Thank you, Cliff Walton and to everyone who has contributed information re William Jervis / William Jarvis.
My belief that our ancestor Stephen Jarvis was related to Admiral John Jervis was based purely on oral history passed down by generations of ( Kent ) Jarvis descendants. Some Jarvis families also claim to possess memorabilia reputed to belong to the Admiral. Where and why such stories originated is anyone's guess.
I do not have any documentation to support these views and due to lack of any evidence from the research of others, believe that it is unlikely that William Jarvis from Kent was related to Admiral John Jervis.

Delores Woodhouse.
