JEWITT'S FROM MARKHAM, ONTARIO

Hello Rob, Thank you for your email. My great great grandfather Francis Jewitt 1814 and his wife Elizabeth Dove 1814 are found missing in action in Markham, Ontario on the 1861 Canada Census. Their oldest daughter Jane Jewitt 1842, age 19 is found working as a servant in nearby Vaughan while the two youngest children John Jewitt 1847 and Mary Ann Jewitt 1849 are listed living by themselves in Markham on the 1861 Canada Census. I can't believe the Markham town council would allow two school children ages 12 and 14 to live by themselves even if under the care of their older sister age 19. I need to find out what happened to Francis (Frank) Jewitt and his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Jewitt while living in Markham, Ontario.

Rob, please take a look at my JEWITT DNA family group on Ancestry.com. Just hit the DNA link on the Ancestry bar on the top of the page. I'm a member of both the JEWETT and the JEWITT family group. It doesn't cost anything to join and I would appreciate it if you would join me and my sister in my JEWITT family group. I firmly believe most all JEWITT's are related from the same tribe in the past.
My email is blackace8@earthlink.net for your convenience should you care to communicate offline.
Regards,
Joe Jewett

Hi,

I currently live in Canada (Ontario) and my Great, Great Grandfather was Robson Jewitt, who left England and settled in Markham Ontario. His Wife (My Great Great Grandmother) was Amanda Woodard W. Horner. I have always been told that he came from Yorkshire. Maybe some of this helps in your search for the Jewitt's in Canada.

Rob

I am looking for the parents of Annie/Anna Stout (1872) who married Frederick Jewitt (1868) who was a butcher in the Shambles, York.

In 1881 the Jewitts were living next to Mark and Mary Stout who had a child Anna.

There is a thought though within the family that her father was an Aaron Stout.

However I cannot trace any details of a marriage between Frederick and an Annie/Anna.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hello Mick,

Thanks for the hello! The next time you visit Ancestry.com, you might want to visit my DNA Group JEWITT. I'm the only member at this time. Hit the DNA button at the top and type in JEWITT. It's free to just join. I also joined the JEWETT Group at their request, and you can see where I'm a very close match to a Rodney Jewett even though my line is Jewitt. That means we were probably from the 12 Norman tribes in Normandy.

John Jewitt 1784 married Jane Smith 1768 28 Sep 1807 in Eastrington and they moved to Bridlington where John worked as a brickmaker. My great great grandfather Francis Jewitt 1814 was born in Bridlington.

Best regards,
Joe Jewett

ELIJAH JEWITT

I am searching for descendants of Elijah Jewitt 1855 who arrived alone at the Port of New York 17 Nov 1871 headed for Ontario, Canada. He is found on the 1881 Canada Census along with his brother John William Jewitt 1865 living in the household of their great uncle John Smith Jewitt 1812-1883 in Lucknow, Ontario, Canada. They are again found living as lodgers in a boarding house on the 1891 Canada Census but not thereafter on any Canada census.

Elijah Jewitt is next found arriving again at the Port of New York 21 Dec 1891 with a destination of Wisconsin.

Elijah Jewitt 1855 and his brother John William Jewitt are descended from Benjamin Jewitt 1784, the brother of John Jewitt 1781, both born Thorner, Pontefract, Yorkshire.
Elijah's sister Rose Helen Jewitt 1861 lived a hard life with much tragedy, and remained in Yorkshire, England. She was designated a beneficiary on John Smith Jewitt's estate file along with other extended family members Ascough, Beebe and Pye. Additional information available upon request.

I have posted my DNA on Ancestry.com should anyone wish to view this site and join the Jewitt group. It's free to join.
Hi John,
I'm afraid that's all I know. I've spent the last umpteen years tracing my grandfathers family so don't know much about the Jewitts. John & Virtue can be found in all the census records but are Jowetts in 1841 & 1851.
Their son Jack (my g. grandfather) was a liquorice confectioner and ran the factory where Pontefract Cakes were made. He married Mary Ann Rogers in 1900 and they had four children: John, Mary (who died as a little girl), Lizzie (my Grandma) and Annie.
That's about the extent of what I know, although I'm interested to learn more.
I'm also interested to know how we're distantly related.

Jacqui

Jacqui,

Thanks so much! This info is news to me. I haven't had time to get back beyond the censuses, although a genealogist recently showed me how to request church records, and so my next step would have been to try to find John in church records.

Do you have more details of this line of his family? Can you go further back beyond John 1813 - 1887 & Virtue 1813 - 1877? If you can, would you be willing to share what you know?

Thanks

John

John Jewitt was my g.g.grandfather too. I notice that your message is some 4 years old now, so you've probably found out that Johns parents were John 1813 - 1887 & Virtue 1813 - 1877. Both from Pontefract.
My maternal grandmother was the daughter of Jack and Mary Ann Rogers from Normanton.

Trying to find the ancestors of my great great Grandfather William Jewitt born 1816-1823 (depends on which census you look at!) in Barrow, Lincolnshire. According to his marriage certificate 19 May 1842 when he married Henrietta Drust his father's name was Edward. Willim lived from 1841 until his death in 1902 in Stallingborough, Lincolnshire.

Edna also had a daughter Carol who is the eldest of the two. Dad ( John ) was born 31 July 1945, and Carol was 23 Nov 1941.
I'm not sure what else I can tell you.
If you don't mind me asking, is Herbert's sister Annie your great grandmother? I'm trying to work how we are related, distant cousins?
Please keep in touch
Amanda

Hello Heather,

You are correct according to my notes. Margaret Mae Jewitt died 31 March 1938 at the early age of 34 years, 10 months. She is buried Section N-107-1, Teeswater Cemetery, Culross Township, Bruce County, Ontario.

As you can see from my posting, I am not aware of any of Margaret Mae's descendants, and would appreciate it if you could provide me with that information off line.

As for Margaret Mae's ancestors, this information is fairly extensive with a paper trail back to 1781, and I would prefer to provide it to you again off line. Suffice it to say that you are descended from a very proud heritage.

My email address is blackace8@earthlink.net.

Regards,
Joe Jewett

Hi,

Do you have any more information about this branch of the family? Margaret Mae Jewitt and James Kingsley Edgar are my great grandparents. I had been hitting a brick wall with regards to either of their ancestors until I saw your post! All I really know is that Margaret must have died in the early to mid 1940s (I know my grandmother was very young) and that James remarried and had about 8 more kids.

Thanks!
Heather

He served in Company D, 106th Bruce Battalion for 26 months from 31 December 1915 to 28 February 1918. The 106th Bruce Battalion boarded the steamship Metagama in Halifax on the 18th October 1916 and arrived in England 28 Oct 1916. They marched and trained for the next seventeen months, waiting to be deployed to France as part of the Fifth Division of the CEF. Instead, the battalion was demobilized in England on the last day of February 1918, the officers transferred elsewhere, and the men sent to France as reinforcements to front line Canadian units. Private Jewitt was assigned to the First Battalion on 1 March 1918.
Re: JEWITT'S FROM YORKSHIRE
Hi, Im interested in the Jewitts (et al spellings) of Thorner/Scarcroft etc through my connection to Benjamin Jawet who married Elizabeth Crosswaite in 1744 at Whitkirk. They lived at Scarcroft and i believe that the John bap 1781 is their grandson through their son Benjamin's marriage to Sarah Gibson in 1776.

I don't have much information on what happens to these Jowetts other than some parish records. There is also a reference to some of the children of Benjamin and Elizabeth in a brief mention in a family will which relates to Elizabeth's sister Ann's Wray family.

There are a couple of Jowitt etc gravestones at Thorner but these all seem to be descendants of other probable cousins as there seems to have ben a Jewitt etc presence at thorner for some time.

What does interest me is what happend to my Jowitt line, a lot are buried at Thorner but Im fairly certain that there was a drift away from Thorner possibly further north towards York. I don't have any later references to the Jowitts being in the Thorner area after the first half of the 1800's. Benjamin and Elizabeth children are summarised belowtogether with other references from the transcript of thorner records:

1745 5 May CHR Elizabeth
1747 21 May CHR Benjamin
1749 8 May CHR Joseph
1749 28 May BUR Joseph son of Benjamin
1750 27 May CHR James Bur 22 Feb 1816 65 yrs (NBI)
1753 14 May CHR Ann
1753 16 May BUR Ann daughter of Benjamin
1757 15 May CHR Sarah
1759 3 Nov CHR Robert
1761 10 Oct BUR John son of Benjamin
1762 13 Apr CHR Marmaduke
1763 10 June CHR Abraham Bur 7 Dec 1815 52yrs (NBI 1813-37)
1776 23 Nov BUR Benjamin Jewitt
1783 8 March BUR Elisabeth Jewitt Shadewell Widow 70 yr
1786 19 Dec BUR Benjamin Jewitt Thorner Husbandman 40 yrs

Hello,

I do have some information on the JOWITT line which would better be sent offline because of the length and detail. Please contact me at <a href="http://www.blackace8@earthlink.net" target="_blank">www.blackace8@earthlink.net for more detail.

In the interim, here is some information on the Coat of Arms awarded to Edmond Jowitt.

Coat of Arms:
According to London's College of Arms, the coat-of-arms were granted on May 17, 1836 to Edmond Jowitt of Eltofts in the parish of Thorner, in Yorkshire, and the other descendants of his grandfather Joseph Jowitt of Leeds. Thus only the descendants of the latter are entitled to the arms. The shield is blue with a white chevron (like a stripe on the sleeve of a non-commissioned officer), with two gold oak wreaths above and a seated golden lion, looking out at the observer, below. On the chevron are three black hunting horns. The crest goes above the helmet, which in turn goes above the shield. It consists of a seated lion like the one on the shield, but red, supporting a small shield with its right forefoot. This shield is decorated like the main one in the arms.

Blazon of Arms:
Azure; on a chevron argent; between two chaplets of oak in chief; and a lion sejant guardant; in base or; three buglehorns stringed sable.

Crest:
The lion gules; the dexter forepaw supporting an escutcheon of the arms.

MOTTO:
Anima et Prudentia (With Courage and Prudence)

Source Reference:
Burke's General Armory

In closing, I will do all I can to help you sort out all of the many JEWITT/JOWITT ancestors from the ancient town of Thorner in the lower division of Skyrack.
Joe Jewett
USA
