My great-grandfather SIMON JOHANN was born Dec. 27 1859 in Dernbach, Pfalz, which was part of Bavaria. He was Roman Catholic. He emigrated in 1890 to the U.S., stopping first in Pennsylvania and winding up in Greenwich, Conn. by 1895.

If you have any more info about Johann's from the Rhineland-Pfalz region, I'd love to see it.

I've recently been gifted a collection of postcards from the early 1900s and have run across one that may be of interest to this forum. I realize that the last name isn't exact but it's as close as I can find.

The postcard if of Lennes Johannick and Elain Johannick and would be from approximately 1905-1915 and the children are about 6 and 3 years old.

Based on the other postcards that I have, I want to say that these children were in Minnesota but I can't be sure about that. I have no other information and would enjoy finding this photo a good home.

Please let me know if interested.

Kathryn

From my understanding for the research I've done anyone speaking German was considered German. Prussia at that time was expanding it's borders. Much of the area kept changing hands.
In my case, I've been researching a line that I thought it was Prussian. I recently learned that they where from Mecklenburg which was neither part Prussia or Germany. Remember, all the boarders where redrawn at the end of WWI. From most of the records I've seen so far people are listed as Germans.

JOHANN, Catharine 1916 Milwaukee Communion Book (see jpg)

1916 Child's Celluloid Catholic Communion Book

This is a beautiful child's communion book from 1916. It measures 2 1/2" x 4" x 7/8". 400 pages. The covers are an ivory-colored celluloid with an imprinted color illustration of Christ on the front and metal clasp. The spine is embossed velvet. Gilded page edges. The inside cover is recessed with an inset Mother-of-Pearl cross with a metal Christ on it with a fancy cloth background.
The title page reads Perlen der Anbacht and is in German. Printed by Diederich Schaeffer Co., Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The opposite tissue-covered page has an actual line engraved print of Christ. The hand-written next page shows this book was given to Catharine Johann upon her communion on June 18th, 1916. The handwriting is in German, Swiss or possibly Scandinavian. (See attached jpg for possible handwritten genealogical information from book).

Cherie King:
Re your research for JOHANN's from Prussia. What do you have as far as family member names? My maiden name was Johann. I know my grandfather was Herman Johann, born in Prussia, (believe year of birth was 1842) came to US. I don't know where he arrived in US. But, lived in Indiana, served in Civil War. My grandfather was 51 when my father was born, and died then my father was 3. My father died in 1975 so I have little info on my grandfather. There were several Johann's in Evansville Indiana, where grandfather and grandmother lived and died. In your search were you able to locate any church files in Germany. I think I recall my dad saying he was told family was from Hanover area in Germany. Do you have any siblings of Julias? I would appreciate any info you have which might match with my family. My Johanns are also from Prussia
which according to our old German maps
are kind of districts of Germany. Other
districts are Silesia, etc. I think you
could look under Germany and if you have
no luck, then try the more specialized
Prussia. Good luck!

Johann history in Prussia / Germany

I have an ancestor, Julias Johann, b.~1833, we had always been told he was born somewhere in Germany, but the 1880 US Census lists his birthplace as Prussia. I was told that Prussia was a "germanic area". I'm not sure whether to be researching using Germany or using Prussia. Can anyone help me get started in the right direction? This is the first family member I've traced to outisde the US, so I'm kinda lost!

Thanks,

cherie'
