Re: Jeremiah Johns, b. 1745 NC

Hi Captain, I have recently came upon your posts on various web pages in reference to Jeremiah Johns, my 4th Grt Grandfather. In the past, the research we had stated that he was born in 1768 in Beaufort County, SC and that his father was Jacob Johns and Patience. But the posts that I've seen lately that dates back to December 2011, states that Jeremiah was born in 1745 somewhere in N.C. and that he may not be connected to Jacob and Patience at all. Is the information we've had on Jeremiah and his wife Levicy correct or not? Is he connected to Jacob and Patience? Is he connected to the the S.C. Johns families? You still have his son Jeremiah H. Johns as being born 4 Jan 1798 in Beaufort County, S.C. Is this correct or not? Your response is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Gavin.

I am looking for any information on Nelson (b.1816) & Margaret H.(b.1826) Johns. Nelson's was a printer. Along with their 3 daughters, Susan, Henrietta & Elizabeth, they resided in Chambersburg, PA and appear in the 1850 and 1860 census as residents. I have been unable to locate them on the 1870 census.

Margaret appears (and is noted as a resident) at Detroit, Michigan in 1867 when she is a witness at her daughter Elizabeth's marriage to Junius Severance.

On the 1880 census Nelson again appears, but as a boarder and a widow in Philadelphia, PA.

I have been unable to find any other information on this family.

Thank you!
Bette

I think Blanche is Flora's. I found Mary E. in the 1900 census and she had a 15 year old daughter living with her. I also found Flora's death information here.

http://www.cfmemory.org/Collection/CareyHand/

It was lots of undertaker and other death records from Central Florida for years 1891-1955.

Flora died September 10, 1908 from childbirth. I found no children of that age in later censuses so I presume the child didn't survive either. But she could well have had a daughter 3 years and some months when the census takers arrived.

Thanks for responding.

The children in the 1910 census seem to be Flora's: Maybel E. Daughter 10,and Annie 8. The all have FL FL AL. Mary E the second wife was born in GA has 1 child 1 living so that must be Blanch who is 3.

About the birth date, be aware that the compilers of census data often estimate the birth date based on when the census was taken, what was told by the
house hold member interviewed, etc. This is common. take the date based on
your best info.
Mr. Johns,

Many thanks for the information. I find good correspondence with all I have with the exception of Sarah's birth date. I see 1848 in our family records but 1849 elsewhere.

I have been looking for her grave and think I may have found it. She died in 1902, one year before Texas kept death records. And there is no extant obituary. Her husband is buried in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Sunnyvale, TX. Many of his family are also buried there. And there is one headstone, crudely made, which is attributed to an unnamed "Price" near other Prices. It may be hers.

VR,

William Price, PhD

My 2nd great grandfather James Franklin Johns was born on August 17, 1857. I have seen in many different US and state census that it was put he was either born in Ohio or Indiana. I don't feel either one of those two place are right. My reason for believing this is because of what a family member told me, and he had first hand knowledge of James. He had told me that a uncle of his (which was a grandson of James) had a FBI background check done on in the 60's or 70's. And either his employers or the FBI came back and started asking questions about James. They told him at that time that James came into the US illegal with a friend of his from either Wales or somewhere else in Great Britain and was making their way across the county when his friend got arrested for trying to steal a horse. This family member also told me they informed his uncle that James ran from over sea because he was wanted by the law for something. All I have is that his father's name was David and his mother maiden was Carey. Now also I don't know how true this is. They also told me that James had a British accent. I have also seen a picture of James from either the last 30's or early 40's. I have also hear others within my family say they think at one time or another are last name was spelled St. Johns, and the St. was dropped. Any help you or anyone else could give me would be great. Thank you before hand. I have attached the picture of James I was speaking of above.

My research shows that the Johns/Johnes family was an ancient one in Wales.
I think I have posted most of that info on this board. Cliff Johns

Hi David,

Sorry it has taken so long to get back you. My father said some years ago that he believed that his fathers family came from St Elizaabeth to Westmoreland but does not now remember, he's in his 80's. I have met some other Johns members living in Derby who come from a place called Johnstown in Westmoreland. Coincidently, when i met them for the first time i was quietly surprised has to how much our children looked alike. The only place I can confirm is Lacova in St Elizabeth if I have spelt it correctly is where I am aware that a Johns family has an interest.

Levon Johns

Loren,

I have hit a brick wall with my Johns family research. They told him at that time that James came into the state illegal with a friend of his from either Wales or somewhere else in Great Britain and was making their way across the county when his friend got arrested for trying to steal a horse. This family member also told me they informed his uncle that James ran from over sea because he was wanted by the law for something. All I have is that his father's name was David and his mother maiden was Carey. Now also I don't know how true this is. They also told me that James had a British accent. I have also seen a picture of sames from either the last 30's or early 40's and I would bet money on it that he was not born in US. I have also hear others within my family say they think at one time or another are last name was spelled St. Johns, and the St. was dropped. Any help you or anyone else could give me would be great. Thank you before hand. I have attached a picture of James as well.

Stephen Johns
Kansas

Said to have come with father
to America in 1645.

SOURCE: http://www.gencircles.com/users/mickey/3/data/449.html

Richard was a headright for Southey Littleton, the son of the progenitor of the Littleton family.
Southey obtained 2,340 acres 25 mar 1656 in Northampton Co for transporting 47 persons. - Deal put together by his father.
People listed as headrights are usually not even known to the person claiming them.
This headright for Richard probably purchased from his father in law, Captain John FOX and the voyage that made the headright available was that of Captain John FOX's ship "The White Horse and Curry Comb" which took place about 1650.
Entry for this headright is on page 327, Vol. 1, Cavaliers and Pioneers.

SOURCE: Rob Johns

_____________________________________

More from Rob JOHNS:

A William JOHNS christened a son Richard JOHNS at St. Margaret's, Westminster in 1585.

JOHNS family was involved in the tobacco trade between London and Colonial Virginia between 1600-1650. These JOHNS turned up as tobacco importers and trad goods exporters in London: William, Richard, Roger, Jack Robert, John (known to be Jack Robert's brother), and Thomas. Rob believes this Richard to be the son of William who was christened in 1585.

Richard sailed on the "Mayflower" owned by her Master Peter Andrewes, in her voyage of 1633-34 to Virginia from Gravesend. On this voyage, Roger JOHNS and Jacob JOHNS accompanied Richard, Sr. Richard returned to London on the same voyage with a cargo of tobacco. Roger stayed on in Northampton Co, VA and remained there as agent until his death in abt. 1652. He was a bachelor and had no known offspring.

Richard remained active in the tobacco trade and had some children with wife unknown. In a deposition he gave in 1634 before the High Court of the Admiralty regarding his treatment during the voyage of the "Mayflower", he acknowledged his age to be 42 and his residence to be St. Ethelburga Parish, Bishopsgate, London.

In about 1650, Captain John FOX set sail for Virginia with a Richard JOHNS and a Jane FOX aboard his ship. These two, Richard and Jane, turned up as headrights in two recorded land grants in Virginia. Rob believes this Richard to be the son of Richard Sr and Jane FOX was the daughter of Captain John FOX. Not long after this, Richard and Jane married and had nine children.

Captain John FOX may be the son of Thomas FOX, member of the London Co of 1608-09 (Descended from the FOX family of Great Missenden, Bucks Co, England) or of another John FOX. His wife is believed to be Elizabeth Pickernell, dau of John Pickernell. (Genealogies of Virginia Families)

******************

Richard probably was a Quaker when he arrived, but this is not proven. He may have first stayed in Northampton Co, VA where several other Johns families lived. Or he may have gone straight to New Kent Co, VA where the Fox family lived. New Kent Co later became King and Queen County and then King William.

******************

In 1702, Richard JOHNS, Justice of King William County, Virginia, was
one of the signers of a letter to King William expressing their
loyalty to the Crown. His will was dated 12 Jan 1703/4 and entered into
probate on 20 Mar

*******************

Richard was the "freighter" on shipments of trade goods to Virginia and in the return cargo of tobacco to London.
Name was probably originally Johnes.
Richard, Roger and Jack Robert (Jacob) Johns first came to Virginia in the ship Mayflower, owned and captained by Peter Andrews., 1633-34.
Roger settled in Northampton Co, VA
1638 - Jack Robert acquired land in James City Co, VA on the James River for a tobacco warehouse.
Documentation can be found in "Cavaliers and Pioneers" and the records of Northampton Co
Roger and Robert were both blacksmiths and gunsmiths
Richard returned to London on the Mayflower and gave a deposition at the High Court of the Admiralty which documented his age as 40 years and residence as St. Ethelburga Parish London. It is believed that either this Richard or John the principal of Motley and Johns, was the fiather of Richard Johns of King William County who married Jane Fox.
