Will of William Johnston, Orange Co., NC. 1785

Greetings from Sunny Texas,

Today I received a copy of the Will of William Johnston of Orange County, North Carolina, d. ca. 1785. He was a merchant of some importance. From his will I have garnered the following information about his immediate family:

Father of William: Robert Johnston of Hearthwood, Lochmaben Parish and Shire of Annandale in SCOTLAND.

Mother of William: Isabell Burnet Johnston of Mooshall Parish of Nithsdale, SCOTLAND. She had a brother Robert Burnet and a sister Mrs. Jane Burnet Craik wife of William Craik of Mooshall.

Child of William: Amelia

It would appear that Amelia was the sole surviving child of William at the time of his death.

William was also the only son of Robert Johnston of Hearthwood.

William’s wife appears to have preceded him in death as no mention is made of her in the Will.

There are several pages of bequeaths; however, there are no other Johnstons mentioned nor other relationships to William and his family.

My thanks to Charlie Weaver in North Carolina for providing me with a copy of William’s Will.

Cliff. Johnston
Jacob Laird and Jane Johnston

I have been, along with several other individuals, working on the genealogy for the Laird family, as descended from Jacob Laird and Jane Johnston, off and on for several years, and would like to ask for a little help in locating information on Jacob and Jane themselves. It appears that we have hit the proverbial brick wall.

Jacob and Jane were married, probably, around 1775 to 1776. It seems likely that they married, if not in Huntingdon, PA, then close by. Huntingdon is where they lived for several years, and is where they died in 1791 and 1796, respectively.

Jane's father, we think, was Thomas "The Elder" Johnston, and she had 2 brothers that we know of, William and Thomas Johnston. Jacob was a 1st Lt. in the Bedford County, PA, militia during the Rev. War. With Jacob, there is the apparently typical "three brothers" legend - one went south, one went to Indiana, and one stayed put - which I have seen at least 2 or 3 times during the course of researching the family. It adds a little interest to the search.

There were seven children of Jacob and Jane Johnston Laird:
1) William (born around 1778) who was married twice at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church (1-Ann Drennan, 2-Elizabeth Alexander) and had fifteen children (7 with one wife, 8 with the other). William remained in area of Huntingdon, married 1st wife c.1799, married 2nd wife c.1825;
2) Thomas (born around 1779?) who was married to Mary Ann Lapsley at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, had eleven children and ran a tavern or hotel business in Erie;
3) David (born around 1780-1781) who was married to Ann Law at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, had at least 2 children (Rebecca and Lydia), left Huntingdon between 1812 and 1820, showed up on the Missouri census for Troy, Lincoln county in 1830, then disappeared;
4) Johnston (born about 1785) who married Elizabeth Raynolds in Canton, Ohio;
5) Sarah married Samuel Hemphill at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, moved to Canton, Ohio;
6) Anne married Thomas Hemphill (brother to Samuel) at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, moved to Canton, Ohio;
7) Margaret (born in Dec 1791) married John Saxton at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, moved to Canton, OH.

Jacob Laird died intestate, "seized in his demense" on or about 1 Oct 1791. All of his children were under the age of 14 at the time of his death, and the youngest was born after he died. The mother, Jane, waived her rights as guardian, and Jane's brothers were named the official Guardians for the minor children. Jane died around the spring of 1796. William inherited his father's holdings (or bought out the interests of his siblings with the support of the Huntingdon Orphan's Court). There appeared to be a lot of fighting between the siblings recorded by the Orphan's Court between 1791 and 1815, and this may be the reason David Laird left the area with his family.

I would like to find out if anyone knows where Jacob and Jane might be buried, and who (and from where) Jacob's and Jane's parents were. So far as I've been able to determine, they haven't been located in the Huntingdon area, so I assume their remains were transported to wherever Jacob's parents or Jane's parents lived.

We are also seeking additional descendants (those we haven't found yet) of Jacob and Jane Johnston Laird. I am most particularly interested in Thomas' descendants (my direct ancestor) and the fate of David Laird (who went more or less missing after 1812) and his descendants. We have found one daughter, Rebecca, who married Elijah Galloway, but I would LOVE to learn more about David, Ann, and others of their children.

Thank you - Claudia Laird
Not sure if it's the same family. I have a John Johnston, born in Beaver Co. Penn. He married a Catherine Porter. Father's name was Robert Johnston who married Susannah. Robert died in 1871, Susannah was born in 1790. What do you think?

As far as I can tell Jane (Johnston) Laird was the sister to Thomas Johnston Jr. (1742-1812) and not his daughter. Their parents were Thomas Johnston [the elder] (1730-1806) & Sarah.

In the 1790 census, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, for Thomas Johnston [the elder], he is living alone, but living next to him is his son Thomas Johnston Jr.
Series: M637 Roll: 8 Page: 131

In the will for Thomas Johnston Jr. recorded on April 12, 1813. It list a witness for the will as "John Laird". This John Laird was the son of Jane Johnston and Jacob Laird.
http://files.usgwarchives.org/pa/huntingdon/wills/johnston-t...

Jane (Johnston) Laird's sister was Sarah Johnston who married Samuel Isop (born abt 1750). After Jane's death, this is the couple that raised her son William Laird (1779-1852). In the 1800 census for Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania you can find them living next to one another (found under the name of "Samuel Hysop".
Series: M32 Roll: 40 Page: 153

Jane (Johnston) Laird had another brother named William Johnston (1752-1813) who married Mary Reed.

George Johnston, May 1819, Armaph, Ireland - Nov 6 1911, Kinloss, Bruce Co. Ontario, Canada. Married March 15, 1849 (787 #67) Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland to Elizabeth G. Irwin, April 10, 1822, Fermanagh, Ireland - June 18, 1911, Kinloss, Bruce Co. Ontario, Canada. They had: Margaret Jane Johnston 1852, James Johnston 1855, George Phibbs Johnston 1857, Stephen Irwin Johnston 1859, Florence Johnston 1862, Robert William Johnston 1865. Most of the records in Ireland were destroyed in a fire in 1922. Can anyone help us trace our roots? It is believed George's father was George Johnston. Elizabeth's parents were Archibald G Irwin and Mary Stewart Hunter. Thanking you in advance.
I came across this message and am curious about your Johnston family tree. This is one branch of my family I've yet to trace down. The name Johnston occurs within my family quite a few times over the course of the last two hundred years or so. My Gr.Gr.Gr.Gr. Grandmother Geelan was a Johnston, her given name I believe was Mary,possibly Margaret. She was born in 1750-1751 and married to a Robert Geelan. They lived in Longford, near Newtownforbes N.I. The name Cloonageeher is where they were from exactly. The families are found in Leirtim and Longford Ireland, which adjoin at this part of Ireland. The Johnstons, Geelans, and Hunts, seem to have resided in both Leitrim and Longford for a few hundred years and intermarried quite often. The name Johnstons bridge is briefly mentioned in our family. So I believe way back you and I are connected to the same Johnston's. The name Shaw also intermarries into both families.Please reply with any info. you have and I'll do likewise. I resdide in Canada where my Geelan ancestors came 180 years ago.

I am a direct descendent of Thomas Johnston. I have been to the Johnston-Goggins Cemetery at Bush River Baptist Church, but was unable to find his grave marker. From what I understand, the marker just had a "T.J" on it and is probably washed. What do you want to know and I can tell you what I know. I believe he is my fourth or fifth great grandfather.

Hi Susan.
I always thought my great-grandfather, Albert Everest Johnston, came to Canada in 1900 from Ireland. In a 1911 census, he gives his place of birth simply as USA and indicates that he's of Danish descent.
On his marriage license he gives his place of birth as Mansfield, Nebraska and his parents as Fred William Johnston and Maria Lawrence. He was born in 1870.
I can't find a Mansfield, NE (even as a ghost town) but, looking at a map, Mansfield MO is not much of a stretch.
Perhaps your Fred William is related. Maybe a nephew.
Chuck

It appears our Isaac's are not the same. My Isaac Butler Johnston was my great great grandfather. He married two different Elizabeth's (Elizabeth King and Elizabeth Berry). Isaac Butler had 7 children with Elizabeth King. David R, John W, James F, Elizabeth A, Nancy J, Lucinda, and Rebecca. Elizabeth King died in 1842. Isaac married Elizabeth Berry in 1843. They had 6 or 7 children. Isaac Newton(my great grandfather b 1844 d 1896)Margaret L, Jesse N, George C, Adley B, a possible 6th child, and Mary Elizabeth.
John W. Johnston named one of his sond Isaac Newton too (b 1865). One Isaac Newton is the step uncle to the other. Very confusing.
I am trying to determine if James A and Elizabeth Sarah are the grandparents of Isaac Butler Johnston.
I hope this helps.

I would be most interested to learn about whatever information you might have, as well as any sources you have for the information. Isaac Johnston is my 3rd Great Grandfather. I have never located information on his middle name. Further, I have not been able to locate any information concerning the distribution of his estate or orphan records for the minor children. The information that we have says that he died somewhere between 1840 when he shows up in the census records for Randolph Co., Illinois and when his wife Clarissa married Thomas McNeill in 1846.
