Searching for the parents of Mable and Walter JOHNSTONE who lived in San Francisco, USA 19C

I have been looking for the given name and vital statistics of my great great grandfather Johnstone who was born in New York and lived in San Francisco starting around 1870 or earlier until his death. I don't know his first name, but he married a woman whose last name is Horne, not from the US. My aunt thinks he may have been a lawyer possibly William Wiley Johnstone b 1846 d 1882 and Selina Horne b 1842.

My gggrandparents died young and the children Mable Elizabeth and Walter Everett were raised by an aunt. I do not know who. When Mable married in 1907 her brother gave her away. Walter was born outside of the US.

I have been looking for the names and information on the ggrandparents for at least 10 years. The San Francisco earthquake lost most vital records for the period I need.

I only know this information from census records and my ggrandmother's death record. My aunt was the informant and lived with her grandparents. She does not know the name of Mable's parents either.

Do you know anything about this family?
I am working on my husbands family tree and I am stuck at David Johnston b: 1726 and immigrated to West Virginia area around 1736-1737 after his father died. His brother James stayed in Ireland since their father left everything to him. I haven't been able to accurately find information that leads back to their father, James(?). I'm also interested in tracing back the lineage to Scotland. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Johnstone of Annandale - connection with NE Scotland?

My grandfather spoke of some kind of family connection with someone called 'Johnstone of Annandale'. I did some research and am perplexed as my family are from the NE of Scotland originally and there are no Johnstones in the family. Was there any connection between Johnstone of Annandale and the Jacobite rebellions and was he (the 3rd earl?) in the north during the '45 war? I would love to unravel this mystery.

Thanks, Dawn
dawngrassick@gmail.com

I've seen the debate about NC Governor Gabriel Johnstone's origins -- some saying he is John of Stapleton's son, others saying he is not. It would be great to be able to see the roots of the debate. Would anyone mind sharing your sources?

The ones I can name include:

The Book of Kenan (a published genealogy of the Kenan family with a section on Elizabeth Johnstone who was married to Thomas Kenan, and emigrated from Scotland (via Ireland) to NC)

A letter by Gabriel Johnstone where he names his father as John of Stapleton and his siblings (including Elizabeth) (This source appears in the Book of Kenan)

History of North Carolina that has a small reference to him being from Scotland and being a scholar.( There are also a half dozen small bios on the web related to him being governor of NC, most all saying the same thing -- Scottish, trained as a physician, scholar at St Andrews University in languages, governor.)

Burke's Peerage, which names John of Stapleton, but does not name Elizabeth Belchier as his wife or Gabriel Johnstone as his son.

~As you can see, it's not the best list-o-sources. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: House of Lords 1985 Annandale Case

So as not to leave this posting as the last word, I will reply that I do have the full report of the Hope family's last of several attempts over 250 years to obtain the titles of the House of Johnstone. Earlier claims by the Hopes denied the existence of John. The man you quote as a reliable source was hired initially by James D. Johnstone of South Carolina. When he stopped paying for his services, he began working for the Hopes, a wealthy family who gained control of all the lands and other wealth of the Johnstones of that Ilk when the last Marquis came under the control of his relation who married a Hope. No one representing any other claimant presented any testimony and no notice was given to any American claimant that the case was being heard. The quotes used and the conclusion reached were based on the testimony of someone paid by the man who gained the title of earl. The title of Marquis of Annandale remains dormant. The mysteries around the issue are very much alive, as is the Carolina "Claim," though the case will never again go before the House of Lords. The Clan, or more traditionally for a lowland Scot family, the head of the family is a Hope with the adopted addition of Johnstone. Seems odd for a group with numerous male Johnstones of the blood, including Lord Hackness but the Lord Lyon and the Clan Johnstone Society in America are happy with this state of affairs.

Hi Jeanne. This is Lynda Johnstone Fawcett, related to you as you say. Florence Camies is my 1st cousin, 2x removed.
Anna Rosina Camies is my great grandmother. I joined the Camies Clan on Facebook too today. My mom named my sister Jeanne so don't know if it was a family name back then. My mom started all the family searching but passed away in 1999. Back then she did all the searching by writing letters, talking to relatives and even went to Somerset House in London. Since then, I have all her notes and started to add to the family tree by joining Ancestry.com. Have since been in contact with other relatives on Ancestry sharing whatever we had. If there is anything you need, don't hesitate to contact me. My email is .. postylyn@hotmail.com

Lynda

Hello,
I have just this evening found out about the Camies Clan facebook site and through some more research came to this site. I too am related to your Camies line. I live in Canada and am related to Florence Camies, Henry's daughter. You mention a Jeanne. I wonder if there is a connection to me as I am also a Jeanne. I've always wondered how I came by that name.
I'd love to hear from you. I am also trying to contact Julian Camies. He posts a photo of Henry Camies in army uniform. I have the same photo and I am curious as I always was told that was John Marsh, Florence's husband. Can't wait to find out more.
Sincerely,
Jeanne

Well you can actually see the real marriage cert on Ancestry, but what you should get is a birth cert for one of the children which will give you the mother's maiden name. Then you knw that the marriage cert is the correct one.

It's unfortunate that the census only says SCotland as his birthplace as William johnston is quite a common name there and it will be hard to track him down.

However, if the marriage cert is the right one then his father was William and he was a stone mason - so that's a step forward.

It will cost abt £9.25 bp to get a birth cert - do you know how to get one from the official site?

Hi Fiona,

In answer to your questions, I have an Irish marriage for them, but no proof without documentation, so your record may be the correct one. I also find it odd that Reverend Alexander McCormick (1741-17 Feb 1792) had two children born
after his death! Both Christian/Christina born 1794 and her brother John born 1796! Something is definitely wrong here.

If Reverend Alexander McCormick and his wife were married in 1769, then my Reverend Andrew Thomas McCormick born supposedly in 1761 couldn't be the child of this marriage, but his brother, my 3rd Great Grandfather, Alexander McCormick (1773-1821)would fit in nicely. Both of these brothers were born in Ireland and both married Irish girls. The next brother in line would be James McCormick (1776-1813) born in Scotland as were the other five.

Yes, I do have this couple dying in Balmerino. For what it is worth, I have this in my notes. I hope it will be helpful in connecting. Hopefully you can use the information.{Christina Johnstone may be descended from James Johnstone who married Bessy Stilly in Scotland. He has a son James (born about 1736) who married Janet McLennachan. Christina may be a sister to the second James since she was born in 1741. (I found this in "In Search of Scottish Ancestry"). Send your email address and I will add yyou to the people who are allowed to view my tree.

Thank you for answering. Christina Johnstone and Alexander McCormick are my fourth gr. grandparents if I have this genealogy correct. My information came originally from the International Genealogy Index. I know for a fact that Rev. Andrew McCormick(1761-1841) and Alexander McCormick (1773-1821) both came to the United States about 1795. They both played interesting and documented roles in American history. The Rev. Andrew being the minister of President Thomas Jefferson and Alexander playing a part in the War of 1812 when the British attacked Washington, D.C. in 1814. As far as I know, their siblings stayed in Scotland. I found a previous marriage for Janet Patrick (1696-1748)was married to a Mr. Patrick and that her surname is really Mitchell, the dau. of Thomas Mitchell and Marion Mudie. Perhaps you have seen that also. Do you have a tree on Ancestry? Would you care to see mine?

Christina Johnstone (1741-1815) of Balmerino, Fifeshire, Scotland married Rev. Alexander McCormick(1741-1792) in 1760 in Donegal, Ireland. Their first son, Andrew T. McCormick was born there in 1761. He and his brother, Alexander born 1773 immigrated to the Colony of Maryland about 1795. Family tradition says that they were descended from a long line of Church of England ministers. Rev. Andrew T. McCormick married Sarah Ponsonby (1757-1831) who was born in Ireland. He married for a second time, Hannah Pleasonton (-1871) His brother, Alexander married Hannah E. Quirke (c. 1775-1820) also born in Ireland. I am in hopes that some of you will recognize some of the names and be able to connect. I have struck the proverbial stone wall!

I can't prove yet that an offspring of Alexander and Christina McCormick married Alexander McDougal. McDougal family depositions show the McDougal/McCormick union, but I've seen no confirmation such as marriage records, etc. What I'm hoping to find is proof there was a Catherine born from Alexander and Christina, which could get me that much closer to proving the marriage between Alexander McDougal and Catherine McCormick.

Thank you for your quick response. So, from your response I figure you have no records showing ALL the children of Alexander and Christina McCormick. Are my assumptions correct?

Bradley McDougal Grantham

I have seen ancestry.com pages show a Catherine McCormick born from this marriage in about 1790, who married an Alexander McDougal. Do you have the names of this union's offspring?

JOHNSTONE Daniel Mackie 1920-2011 b. Glasgow, Scotland, d Mansfield, OH, USA

Dr. Daniel M. Johnstone

MANSFIELD, OHIO: From the time he left school at age 14 to work and help support his family in Glasgow, Scotland, to his years as a fighter pilot during World War II and the Korean Conflict, to his final years when he battled vascular dementia, Dr. Daniel Mackie Johnstone used his intellect and determined, even at times stubborn, character to overcome the challenges in his life. Those battles came to an end Saturday, February 19, 2011. He is now at peace.

Dr. Johnstone was born in Glasgow on April 17, 1920, the only child of John and Mary (Mackie) Johnstone.
His parents struggled financially, so he left school to help support the family.
His first job was as a rivet heater in a Glasgow shipyard. Soon he moved on to work at a fine gentleman's outfitter. In addition to his work he started classes at Skerrry's College of Educational Specialisation. Upon completion of this class work, he began his medical studies at Glasgow University.

His education was interrupted in 1940 when, after the Battle of Dunkirk, he joined the Royal Air Force. He was sent to the United States for flight training under the "Arnold scheme" which was proposed by U.S. General Hap Arnold. He trained with the U.S. Army Air Corps at Lakeland, FL, receiving his wings at Maxwell Field, Montgomery, Alabama. He then served as a flight instructor in Alabama and Canada.

In 1943 he returned to the United Kingdom and was assigned to the RAF's Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment where he began flying the famed British Spitfire as a Test Pilot and Flying Instructor. He continued these duties until the close of World War II and his Class A Release in August of 1946.

After the war he resumed his medical studies in Scotland. He was a graduate of Glasgow University and received his Triple Certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Edinburgh. He interned at Law Hospital in Carluke, Scotland.

Dr. Johnstone immigrated to Canada in 1950, and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force serving as a Flight Surgeon during the Korean Conflict. Throughout his medical career, Dr. Johnstone was licensed to practice medicine in the Canadian Provinces of Ontario, Alberta and Prince Edward Island as well as the U.S. States of New Hampshire and Ohio.

In 1952, he came to the United States to begin work with the Eli Lilly Co. at the Lilly Research Laboratories in Indianapolis. The highlight of his time doing clinical research at Eli Lilly was his work on the team that discovered and developed Erythromycin. He wrote the lead paper that lead to the Lilly patent for Erythromycin - a major antibiotic still in use today.

In 1963 he began a year of residency in psychiatry at Columbus State Hospital, followed by two years of residency at Rollman Psychiatric Institute in Cincinnati, and then one year as Assistant Superintendant at Rollman. He then returned to Columbus to take over duties as Superintendant of Columbus Children's Psychiatric Hospital. This was followed by service as Commissioner of Mental Hygiene and Chief of the Bureau of Hospitals for the State of Ohio. Prior to coming to Mansfield he was in the private practice of psychiatry in Columbus and on the psychiatric staff of Riverside Methodist Hospital.

He was recruited to come to Mansfield in 1971 to establish psychiatric services at what is now known as The Center. He maintained a private practice in psychiatry in Mansfield until his final retirement at the age of 80 in June of 2000.

Daniel Johnstone and Margaret Imrie grew up within 15 miles of each other in Scotland, but they first met at Nassau in the Bahamas when a colleague of Dan's told him he should come see this beautiful Scottish lass from Tillicoultry he just bumped into. They were married on December 20 1960. That began fifty years of wonderful, and at times challenging, experiences together.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Imrie) Johnstone of Mansfield, Ohio; his son, Philip Daniel Johnstone and his wife, Cynthia of Hockley, TX (their family - sons, Steven, Sean and Cody (Cortnie) Wellman and their son, Chaston and daughter, Chandley) also all of TX); his daughter, Sheila Anne Holloway and her husband, Philip of Mansfield, Ohio (their family - son, Erin (Nicola) Holloway with daughters, Neve Caitlin and Anna Rose of Leesburg, VA, daughter, Rachel (Holloway) Schag and her husband, Matt of Bellville, Ohio and their son, Hudson Matthew and daughter, Sophia Grace). Carolyn Zajack and Danell Allen have also become like daughters and part of the Johnstone family.

Dr. Johnstone had been a member of the American Medical Association, Richland County Medical Society, Ohio State Medical Association, Academy of Medicine of Columbus, American Medical Writers' Association and Westbrook Country Club.

Out of respect for Dr. Johnstone's wishes, the family will not have any formal services. They will hold a celebration of his life at an Open House on Saturday, February 26, 2011, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at his residence. Friends are asked to take note of this invitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions honoring the life of Dr. Daniel M. Johnstone be made to the Dewald Community Center of The Salvation Army, 47 South Main Street, Mansfield, OH 44902.

From the first time he took the controls of a plane to his last time soaring in the heavens, Dan never lost his love for flying. Throughout his life he owned twenty-six different airplanes which he and Margaret used to travel throughout the country. He often read and quoted the poem High Flight which captured for him the wonder of flight. The poem was written by fellow RCAF pilot John Gillespie Magee.
High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,

I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air. . Up, up the long, delirious burning blue

I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark, or ever eagle flew -

And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Online guest registry at www.wappner.com
Courtesy Post
Published in the News Journal on February 21, 2011
