They were all from Georgia. I am sorry I did not remove my query. I appreciate your time in responding.
From what I can understand, the original family moved to Mt. Meigs, AL from Virginia. I don't know that much about the family at all. As I stated before, my great grandmother was Cornelia (Neelie) Judkins (1880-1953). She married my great grandfather Joseph L. Fitzhugh in 1900 and they lived in Birmingham. My grandfather, Charles Fitzhugh, was born in 1904...he died here (Akron Ohio) in 1979. He had a cousin named Bozeman Judkins whom I never met, but I know that Bozeman was born in Alabama. He died in Cleveland, Ohio.

There are a couple of stories that I've heard about, but haven't been able to confirm. The first was that Neelie's mother moved to Florida and left Neelie to be raised by her grandmother, who I think was Amelia in Mt. Meigs, AL. Another family story is that during slavery one of the Judkins men was sold away but vowed to the wife he left behind that if there was anyway possible, he would be back for her. Well after the war, he did return...with another wife. He set up 2 households and took care of both families. Hmmmmm....like I said I haven't been able to verify or confirm these stories.

Do you think we talking about the same family?
Anita

I believe it was Thomas Judkins that traveled with his parents as a young child gathering plants and they left him in VT north of McIndoe Falls/Greensboro Bend area.

I am descended from Thomas payne Judkins cousin William Judkins, this branch of the family stayed in the Pattishall, Astcote, Cold Higham regions until as late as the 1980's when my grandfather John Ambrose died. However I still have relatives in Towcester and Northampton.
more on your point in addition to any church troubles the Judkins family were agricultural workers and during the mid 1870's there was a lock out of workers by the landowners in a backlash against the Agricultural Workers Union. As the Baptist and Methodist churches were heavily involved with the Union they arranged for any workers who wished to emigrate to the then colonies of Canada and New Zealand, also arranging employment too. This would explain why all one brother went to New Zealand, this was arranged by the Baptist Minister, and the others who were Methodists went to Canada.

Hello Judith
Your previous email did make sense!!, and I have Jenkinson Payne in my tree, and yes, Elizabeth Payne is my Gt Gt Grandmother. I am so intrigued by the family story.
Mary Ann seems to have had a long and eventful life,
I can't begin to imagine what it was like for her to be unmarried and pregnant so young. Elizabeth was born in Towcester workhouse. Was Mary Ann thrown out? or just afraid to tell? We may never know !!

It is exiting to find someone living in that area. Northampton is where two branches of my tree converge, but I have yet to visit.
I am a little nearer than the states, in Scotland, although traveling from my location to the midlands, usually takes longer long as to fly from the States!!

Please email me:
janeturner@fsmail.net

Regards Jane

I have just checked out the time line mentioned in your post.
The church troubles in 1874 may explain a lot. I have often wondered what happened to divide the family so at that time.
It would seem that Levi's parents John & Mary Ann became members of the Towcester Baptist Church in July 1872, along with their 2nd son, Thomas Payne Judkins. Levi joined in Sept the following year.
Their eldest son John Judkins (1847) had married in 1869, and Mary Ann's daughter Elizabeth Payne (1842)married c 1860. Neither of the elder children were members of the church, and were perhaps less troubled by any hostilities during 1874.
There is no mention of Levi's 2 older siblings in the time line.
As the gt gt granddaughter of Elizabeth, I am fascinated by her mother's troubled and eventful life, and by the fact that she has so many descendants across the world.

Actually, my dream visit would be Rome, Venice, Florence and Lake Como.

I, too, am related to a set of Judkins from Alabama. I don't have many names to research, but my great grandmother was Cornelia (Neelie) Judkins Fitzhugh. as far as I have been able to find out, the family originated in Virginia. Does any of this sound familiar to you? My aunt has told me that Neelie's mother's name was Percilla or Mariah. If this is familiar, please contact me. I can be reached here or by email, nitahew1808@aol.com

thanks
Anita
