I was told by my mother-in-law, Dorothy Kalima that my father in law original name should have been Kalima Kahoopii. That some took the name Kalima, some took the name Kahoopii and still some took the name Hoopii. Would you have information to connect these links? My father in law's family is from Maui and in my research found some came from Hana/Keanae.

If I could get the information as soon as possible because me and my sister Lori are putting out a family newsletter and we would like it to go out on Saturday. January 9. I am really excited about getting to know my Samoan side it's been awhile and would be good to know them. Thank you again.

Sandy

Aloha Bronwyn!

I remember you many, many years ago! I think you were 15 or 16 when I last saw you. You used to hang out with my nephews Eddie and Robert Kwan. You probably don't remember me. I used to live in Monterey Park with Dad, Edward Kwan, Jr. My dad and your Grandmother (Aunty Nona) are 1st cousins. How is your Grandma doing? I hear she went to Maui for vacation with Aunty Nina and Uncle Reuben. Lei Lewis has been compiling information for a while. I think she sent it to Uncle Melvin, check with him.

It's good seeing familiar family names in here! Take care and hope to keep in contact!

Aloha Jennie!

I read your reply from the "Message Board" and am
quite excited to hear from you!

My Grandmother's name is: Rose Nakahili Hauoli Kaua.
Her mother (who is also my Great-grandmother) is:
Emily Liloa Kaaiakamanu. According to my Grandmother
Rose autobiography, this is what she wrote:
"My mother, Emily Liloa Kaaiakamanu, born in Kipahulu,
Maui, was the daughter of Rev. David Kaluna and Jennie
K. Kaaiakamanu. She had a brother, Jeremiah
Kaaiakamanu and a sister, Emily Milikaa."
It sounds like you are the Great-granddaughter of
Emily Milikaa and I am the Great-granddaughter of Emily
Liloa Kaaiakamanu. I discovered that the early
Hawaiians often gave their children the same name
thus, both of our Great-grandmothers are named Emily.
Because "my" Emily was married to: Ambrose Kala Hauoli
Kaua, Sr., while "your" Emily was married to: David
Peka Milikaa.

I live in San Marcos, California but you have plenty relations in Waimanalo, as Lei Lewis mentioned in her reply.

My Grandma Rose had 4 children: Edward Kwan, Jr., Rev. Melvin Kwan, Leonard Kwan, and Mildred "Nina" Kwan (her last name is Jeremiah). My Uncle Melvin's family and Aunty Nina's family live in Waimanalo.

I tried to email you directly at schillingh@hotmail.com but the email would not go through. You can email me at hwngal38@yahoo.com, maybe we can come up with some more information that we can exchange!

Aloha,
Eileen

I have some of John Kaua and Maria Hiiaka babies birth dates I dont have the copy of the ceritifcates. I found so many of them and made copies of uncle melvin I am sure when Rose them get settled they will come across the papaers that I gave their dad. I'm at work right now when I get home I will look through my things.

How I got these papaers was strange because I was looking for my own family. Every time I would go do some research I would come across uncle melvins ohana. I felt at that time I needed to do something about it so I gathered up things as I was coming across them. Talk to you later.

Note: I was not aware that John was French! I though that he was the Tahitian and his mother is Hawaiian. I have a paper that I found at the state archives that shows this name KAUA also TAUA is Tahitian.

Aloha!

I saw some of the papers that your grandmother shared with uncle melvin. I dont know if she completed her research I only saw some marriage records and some census.

I did some research on both sides for uncle:

1. Kaaiakamnu
2. Kaua

Kaaimaunu side I found:

David Kaluna Kaaiakamnu who married Jennie Nakahili. Found his father who's only name was Kaaiakamanu had acres and acres of land in Hana. I did not go to see what happened to the lands. David Kaluna Kaaiakamanu was a very important man in Hawaii as a hawaiian pastor and as a kahuna lapaau (hawaiian herbs). I found a picture of him at the bishop museum along with uncle melvin mother (rose).

I got his obituary from the newspaper. His daughter is Emili Liloa Kaluna Kaaiakamanu who married Ambrose Kalahauoli Kaua.

What did you need?

Oops! I left out the part about my Grandmother (Winona) being Emily's Granddaughter. So that makes you two cousins? I am Emily's Great-Great-Granddaughter!
I have information which says there may have been two daughters named Emily (the 1900 census record only shows one Emily at the time, who was 7 and in school. Her birthdate is listed as 1893. My Great-Great-Grandmother Emily has other documents listing her birthdate as 1878. I am not sure which is correct, or if there were more than one Emily's...apparently that was common to give several children the same English name. Do you have any more info on this?
Mahalo!
