Kane Family - Bradford, West-Riding, Yorkshire, England

I am researching the family of Thomas Kane and his wife Catherine Durkin Kane. Both were born in County Mayo, Ireland in the late 1870s to mid 1880s.

They married in 1903 in Halifax, West-Riding, Yorkshire, England.

Their first 3 children were also born in Halifax:

1. Mary Kane, born 1904
2. Anthony Kane, born 1906
3. Ellen Kane, born 1909

The 1911 English census shows the family living in Bradford, West-Riding, Yorkshire.

It appears there were other children born in Bradford, after the 1911 census:

4. Possibly John Kane in 1911
5. Ann Kane in 1914
6. Thomas Kane in 1915
7. Bernard Kane in 1920

I believe that Catherine Durkin Kane was my grandmother's sister and am trying to confirm that connection.

Thank you for any assistance.

Barbara

Good luck. If you don't find Thomas Cain AKA Kane in your records though, you will find him in the WA BDMs, in WA convict records & in the Dictionary of Western Australians if I recall the name correctly. Thomas Cain AKA Kane (1831-1909) mostly lived at Toodyay where most of his 11 children were born, but Thomas John Kane, Henry Cain & David Francis Kane were all born Greenough between 1862-1866.

It raises the question of why Thomas left Toodyay for Greenough for a time, & whether the reasons included a family relationship to your Kanes. Many Irish went to Newcastle-on-Tyne. One guy in the Cain DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine is a Pete Cain from Newcastle whose Keane ancestors lived in Co Galway. Thomas Cain aka Kane was also from Co Galway. Keane is/was the 14th most common surname there. Kane, Cain & Caine are still found as variant spellings of the same name.

Re: Kane Family, How common is this last name

Aloha, I hope I can answer your question.

Most Irish surnames have multiple origins. Several persons named Cathan founded a clan named O'Cathain: 1. in north Ulster, now mainly Kane & O'Kane; 2. in Co Galway, now mainly Keane & Kane; 3. in Co Clare, also mainly Keane & Kane' plus several other small O'Cathain or Kane septs. In Hawaii Kane was also the name of a Polynesian god.

There are two ways to sort out which Kane clan one might belong to:
1. a paper trail leading to somewhere like north Ulster or Co Galway where a known Kane clan existed; or
2. a Y-DNA test which provides a match with say the Kanes of Ulster or the Kanes of Galway, Clare or elsewhere. See the Cain/Kane DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine

Rory Cain

Hi Cathy,

Yes I have the 1900 Census...you have to look under the spelling KAIN and you'll find them. Francis and Bridget are living with Edward and his family. Its been a while since Pat and I discussed where the Kanes were from in Ireland. Pat found some relatives whose information was that the Kanes came from County Longford. This was word-of-mouth handed down to the family...this can sometimes not be accurate...so these other family relations have been looking into County Longford. This was quite a while ago and I've not heard anything since. You might check with Pat and see if she's received any updates.

I hadn't been working on the family history lately, but you've got me getting fired up again!

If you'd like to write me direct, you can write me at yacolttom@centurytel.net and I'll be happy to help you out with any questions.

Best Regards,

Tom Schenk
Yacolt, WA

I looked through my records. Do you have the 1900 census with their parents living with Edward and Bridget Pender Kane? Have you figured out where in Lietrim the Kane's were from? My sister lives there.

Yes...Pat and I have been in touch for about five or six years now. My GGgrandfather was Edward's younger brother...Patrick...he was born in Kane County, IL around 1858 or 1859. There is also a younger sister, Elizabeth, born around 1861 in Kane County, I believe. Over the course of time we've been able to piece together quite a bit about the Kane family. Good to hear from you...if I can do anything for you...let me know.

Best Regards,

Tom Schenk
Yacolt, WA

Cathy,

I see your post was almost two years ago...the Edward John Kane you cite is my GGUncle and I have been in touch with his direct family in the Chicago area. If you have not been in touch with them in the two years or so since your post, I can pass your post on to them...so you can connect. If you've already been in touch with them, then you can disregard this reply to your post and keep my email address in mind if you should need more information or would like to share any information you may have.

Regards,

Tom Schenk
Yacolt, WA

Kane Family, How common is this last name

Is Kane like a Diaz family or Gonzales, there are just too many to all be related right? I was just wondering how that works. I know in Samoa last names are alot more individual so that u can trace lineage relitivly quickly but Hawaii has lost alot of culture so Im guessing it might not be that easy. My moms name is Georgianna Puanani Kane goes by Nani, Her Sister Gail Malia Kane, their brother George Kane Half siblings Georgette, Harry, DeeDee Kane. There are a few more I dont know them though. All of there Fathers is my Grandfather who is deceast George Kane anf brother Griff Kane his wife we call Auntie Jerry. And thats how far we know. We have lots of family in hawaii but dont know them we lost touch when she moved from hawaii when she was 6

Far too often our ancestors just stated either a county name or simply "Ireland". Plus Irish records pre civil registration in 1864 are sparse. It took me a DNA test for me to track down my Thomas Cain through the Cain/Kane DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine. You will find a fellow Geordie there, Pete Cain, mad Newcastle United supporter, plus others with your spelling, although we have found surname spelling is less important than newcomers think.

Joseph A. (Kozlowski) Kane
Civic Leader & "Good Joe" Joseph A. (Kozlowski) Kane, 97, a resident of St. Mary's Home of Erie East, passed away peacefully there Saturday, March 3, 2012. He was the oldest in his family of six children and helped raise his siblings after his father died when Joe was only 14 years old. He started his working career as an Erie Times-News carrier in the 1920s and as a messenger for the old Postal Telegraph. Joe was a Times Old Newsie since 1949 and served as president for several years. He worked as a Chief Machinist at Copes-Vulcan during World War II. He held the position of Pennsylvania Bureau of Traffic Safety Representative until retirement in 1980, during which time he taught driving safety courses and promoted safe driving across several Pa. counties. He married his wife, Della Dorau on Valentine's Day in 1942. Club life was his biggest passion. He was Manager and Secretary of the Polish National Alliance Club and the Arbeiters Club and member of many Erie clubs. He held various leadership positions in the Erie County Federation of Clubs and the Pennsylvania Federation of Clubs, including President for over 50 years (1944 on). He started the National Polish Alliance Bowling League in 1944 and organized bowling tournaments to include bowlers from all over the nation beginning in Erie in 1946 and ran the tournaments in many U.S. cities for several years. Kennedy as part of the American-Polish Delegation in March 1961. In 1983, Joe sponsored the Small Games of Chance Bill to revitalize Pennsylvania clubs. He was a free lance sports photographer for the Erie Times-News and he accompanied the late Gene Cuneo to baseball All-Star and World Series games. He served as the Promotion Director for Boys Baseball of Erie for many years after it began in 1952. Joe brought Big Ball to Erie and organized an Eastside-Slow Pitch softball league. For his efforts, Joe was inducted into the Erie Big Ball Hall of Fame in 2009. Joe arranged over two dozen testimonial dinners for notable Erieites and fundraisers for local charities. In 1959, over 700 people attended a testimonial dinner in his honor at the East Erie Turners. March 7, 1959 was proclaimed "Joseph A. Kane Day" for his contribution to the Erie community. He always wanted to be on-the-go and enjoyed traveling to Napa Valley, California with his lovely wife, Della, to visit her family. Joseph was a true gentleman and always took the time to help someone. He will be fondly remembered by his family and friends as truly a "Good Joe", and for his gentle happy-go-lucky manner, his interesting stories, and his great sense of humor.
He was born on June 15, 1914 in Erie, Pa.,
son of the late Alexander and Mary Purwikowski Kozlowski. I have found the baptismal records for Mary, John, Dan, Thomas, Patrick, and Martin. All but Patrick and Francis were from Castleconor, Sligo, Ireland. Patrick and Francis were from Kilglass, Sligo, Ireland. I believe I've also found William's wife's name (Michael's mother's name (Patrick & Francis' grandmother)). Mary Diamond.

I also think that their name is note Kane but Keane.
Hi,

I did take a look at what I had and only saw that James Kane's mothers maiden name was Dolan which matches what you had. I do have some other information such as occupation, marriage dates, location for the parents of James Kane and Mary Norton. If you want I can get that to you or once I get added into the tree i'm creating you could see there.

I know that my father and or aunt would most likely have more information. Especially my aunt who is a wealth of info for family history. And both would have stories of your great grandmother and grandfather. Let me know if you'd like some of the info above and or any photos

Hello. I just found out that my GGG-Grandmother may have been born in Londonderry,Antrim, Ireland. Her name was Mary Kane, and most likely had an older sister Margaret if you take into consideration the "irish naming system". The father's name was Thomas Kane, the mother's name was either Hanora Hagen(multiple spellings) or I just saw one for Amy Bainbridge. Mary ended up immigrating to St. Louis, Missouri, United States where she married a man named Peter Bent, also an immigrant from Ireland. If interested, you may contact me for further information, as this may be something that will help me as well! Hope to hear from you soon!

-Hilary

Hi,

Thanks for responding. I don't believe I've seen a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate before.

I do know that James Kane's father was Edward who came from Ireland over to Scotland. I believe I have James mothers name as well. I'd have to dig that info out. I do have some photos that I'd to upload. One of those is a family photo of James and Mary Kane and six of their children. Your great grandmother is in it as well.

John

Hi John,

Any information/pics/etc you have on the family would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure if you can see it but there is a copy of your grandfathers birth record in my pictures, if you can't see- I can send it to you. I only have a few pictures that other distant cousins have posted but I believe I have only seen ones of the girls. Also, any information you have on Big Reds parents would be great. I have seen a few different maiden names for his mother and I was trying to confirm what her maiden name was. I don't have to much information but please let me know if you have any questions that I can help with. (Margaret also had 3 children, 2 boys and a girl) Thank you much and enjoy your day!

James Kane (Big Red) was my great grandfather who came to the US in 1893 and lived in Duquesne. His oldest son whose birth you mentioned who was my grandfather, John. Your great grandmother Margaret would have been my grandfather's next youngest sister. John had 2 daughters and 1 son. I may have other info you're looking for.

John

There are a number of Kane folks from Tuam in the Kane DNA project. Several changed their name to Cain after leaving Ireland and another to Kain while on the voyage. They can't change their DNA though. Some are in the haplogroup I and others in the R-DF5 O'Cahan group in the Cain/Kane DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine
I match the Kain family from Tuam. They were Kane and Keane back in Ireland. My own family were just up the road at Dunmore, tenants of the family who owned 2/3rds of Tuam.
Rory
