Re: Kassell

How much/what research have you done so far on them? What kind of information are you wanting help finding?

I like starting with census records, but identifying the right couple requires knowing names of children. There are a couple of Maurice/Morris and Lillian in the 1930 census.

Maurice is often also Morris and Moritz, so I searched for Lillian Kassell instead. Surname may have been with one or 2 l's in the records, so I searched footnote.com's 1930 census for:

lil* kassel*

at http://www.footnote.com/documents/60505077/census_us_federal...

Best hit seems to be this family, is it them? This Lillian was a lot younger than her husband:

... New York » KINGS » BROOKLYN
BOROUGH » 24-890 » Sheet 4B

Kassell, Lillian (b: 1894*)
Kassell, Maurice (b: 1885*)
children Bernard, Jack and Gloria

You also may want to hunt http://fultonhistory,com for free newspaper articles about the family.

If you have a public library card in the US, you should be able to look for the 1920 and earlier censuses for them for free online from home. You can also hunt for them before their marriage as well in 1910 and Lillian earlier if she immigrated before the 1900 census or was born here.

more ideas about places to start searching and also info about library access is on my beginners resources page at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/...

Did you hunt the New York Times for articles and obituaries? That and other obit sources are available on library sites as well for free.

They can translate and send on to you.

By the way, which area of Lithuania are your relatives from?
I am also trying to research this family line. Her father's name is Nicholas, brother's name Frederick, mother's name (I believe) is Phillipine. I believe the family emigrated from Alsace about 1840: some census records show that Louisa was born in France (some in Germany), some in New York.

I haven't been able to trace back to Alsace. Have you found anything else?

I am searching for information on my family in Lithuania. I have cousins there who I have written to and asked about our family tree. Many of them do not speak English and hence they answer me in Lithuanian. I cannot translate their letters mainly because of the writing. I would like some help in translating these letters as they come in. Does someone know of a service or an individual that would do this?

Kusselewsky, 1870's?

My great grandfather came over from the Russia/Lithuania area in the 1870's, as Joseph Kusselewsky. In the 1890's he changed his name to Kassel. In his name-change papers he said some other members of his family had already changed to Kassel. We've never known of other family members. We do know his father's name was Chaim.
Does any other Kassel have the name Kusselewsky (or something like it) in their history?

Looking for information regarding John Jacob Kassell Sr., (aka Jacob), who was born in Germany about 1827 and died in Muskingum County, Ohio 1892. He married Caroline Mast in 1851 and had children John Jacob Jr., Charles, Annie, Nora, Louis and George W. I have been able to trace the family from the 1860-1880 census and Caroline and Charles in the 1900 Census. However, I have not been able to find John Sr. in the 1850 census, and have not been able to locate immigration records. Any help is appreciated.

Dawn Tonneman

I am trying to help my husband research his family.

His grandmother on his father's side was Alma Augusta Kassel. She was born in IL to Robert and Johanna Kassel.

They went to Germany in the early 1900's and she returned with her son right around the census in 1910. We have been unable to locate them in the census in 1910 0r 1920. We think they were in Missouri the majority of the time. She married in 1923 to Alphin Hadley in MO and her son Robert William Kassel or William Robert Davis married Alma E Hamilton in MO in 1928.

Also, any information regarding Robert and Johanna would be also be greatly appreciated. According to a newspaper article about Alma Augusta, they came to the states from Germany and married in Chicago IL. Johanna died in Pekin, Tazwell Co IL 1918 and Robert in Pekin, Tazwell Co IL 1920.

I unfortunately have little information on Jules however I have a good deal of information on the Kassel family as a whole. Please email me at Andreas_Morlett@yahoo.com so we can compare notes. Sincerely, Andreas

Jules Kassel

Jules Kassel was my great grandfather. I am trying to find any information on him. He was born in Indiana. The 1930 Census shows him with my great grandmother and grandmother. It shows his parents as being born in France. He was married to Colleen Vollenhals. Thank you for any help.
