NEED HELP!! Cecil F. Kays of Frankfort, KY. need info!!!

Greetings!
My name is Christopher Scott Kays I am 39 and Live in Louisville, KY. I am a History Teacher at a local high school and recent Graduate from the University of Louisville. My family hails from Frankfort, KY. And has long been in dismay over the history of my Father’s family name “Kays” , My Father Christopher F. Kays never met his father due a unnatural death in 1950, we were told its was a wreck in Oldham county, KY. What my goal is, Is to give my family a since of understanding of who we are and where we come from. My Grandmother was the last person who had the answers to our many questions and she died with many untold stories. In my research I have found many groups of Kays in and around Frankfort, but no real proof of a relation…. I have since taken over Cecil F. Kays’s grave site at Greenhill Cemetery in Frankfort Kentucky and learned of other people such at William Kays buried there as well. Is their a connection? We have no real information past my Grandfather’s Death records and birth records. If you have any information please contact me asap, I am available at :
Scottkays71@yahoo.com
(502) 240-2543
Are you a kays? And if so you should look into DNA testing. I did. We need more kays of the male gender to be tested. That will be the only way to unravel the kays mystery. Check out familytreedna web sight for the info.

I know that there was a John Kays in Newton from Scotland. I've seen his grave, I've seen the family plot. My own personal bigger concern at this point is filling in the gaps between him and about 4 generations down. That is where my information is lacking that would conclusively link myself to this Kays line. Does someone, anyone, have this information populated with source citation?
I think it would be cool to get the vital facts about this John Kays established or known out there, and THEN it would be beneficial to try and discover sources for his Revolutionary War involvement....or lack thereof. I did note that when I visited the cemetery a couple years back he had an american flag on his gravesite like a lot of veterans of wars do...so someone out there either believes of his contributions or service or knows of it.
I'm looking to get back into my geneaology project and this was a major gap in information that I know I need to fill in. I appreciate all the posts on this board and I thank you in advance for any help or info you can pass on to me!!

I did a little research on Mrs. McLaughlin ("the Marchioness") and I am pretty sure that all that stuff about Kays and Washington is bogus. I think she wanted to be part of the DAR and they were agreeable to let her as long as she was a contributor. Look at the two sources for the DAR's report about John Kays's history in the Revolutionary War. Do a "Find" on the two sources. You will find no mention of him. I wish it were otherwise, but I think the story about John and George was pure fiction.
Carolyn

Check with the library in Newton, NJ They have a lot of information on John Kays and his life there. His son Martin, had a daughter who wanted to join the DAR - and it is substantied that he had interaction with George Washington. Martin's daughter Mrs.Hugh McLauglin, erected a monument to him where Washington camped on his way to meet Lafayette. It is located on a corner in a meadow one mile west of Hamburg, NJ.

Story by John told his children that George never slept in a house on his journey but camped in a tent. He had lost his pocket watch and John found it and returned it to George who had already left and met up with them going down the other side of the mountain.

He was a weaver by trade. John Kays died at his home in Moden, at the age of 92 years old.

He enlisted in the Colonial army and served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. In General William S. Stryker's Official Register of Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War, page 427, his name is mis-spelled "John Kayn." This error has been corrected the official lists from the original muster rolls.

My grandfather was Horace Kays. My husband, began the genealogy on my side of the family, and has contributed information to the Mormon Church. We visited the site and I am proud that an ancestor fought in the Revolutionary War.

Hello blankenshipfamily1

just wanted to update your info a bit.
William Lapsley Kase was my great grandfather. He had one more child besides those in your post: Charles Edward Kase, (born 20 April 1911, died 27 Oct. 1971) was my grandfather. The child you listed as Leela Kay Kase is actually Lula Kay Kase, my great Aunt "Kay". She is alive and well at 85 years of age and resides in Myrtle Beach, SC. She is the one who I got my information from, which is identical to yours except for these two changes. If you wish more info on the Charles E. Kase line, email me and I can provide more.

The last name was either changed to Kase just after them, or the entry is mis-spelled. I'm not sure which, because this is as far back as I can trace my family name.

Yes, I know -- but "John Case" does not equal Lieutenant John Kays, esp. if John Kays was one of Washington's aides, as claimed. He should have gotten more than a passing mention (not misspelled) in the list of soldiers. Also I recall that John was a weaver and raised by Quakers. Weaving is not an occupation likely to bring a man into contact with weapons. War is a young man's game as well. John Kays was nearly 40 when the Revolutionary War started. He was married in 1772, late for those times, and he and his wife had several small children to care for by 1776, if the records are to be trusted. It could be true, of course, but seems unlikely. And the records just aren't there.

Sorry, I misunderstood your post. John Kays (from Edinburgh Scotland) who married Sarah Hull had a son named John Kays in 1775, and there was also a John Kays son of William Kays and Rebecca Simkins born in 1847 in Trumbull, Ohio. John was a fairly commmon name in the Kays line. Good luck in your search.

I am just looking to find out who my GGGrandfather's father was. He was listed as John Kays, but not that John Kays. He had to be a member somewhere of the Kays/Struble family, with his first name of Anthony.

Thank you,
Jim Kays

I looked at the two authenticating DAR records for him, which are searchable on ancestry.com, and found nothing that seemed to match John Kays. I don't think he was an aide to General Washington. I think he may have had a passing contact with the army, which he wove stories about to please his grandchildren. He was a Quaker, a weaver, an older guy, and a family man throughout the Revolutionary War, and I don't see him out there fighting. He did have one descendant ("the Marchionness") who wanted to believe he'd been a part of the war, but I think she wanted to be a force in the DAR, which had recently been founded. She had a lot of money (she and her husband were philanthropists), so a way was made for her to participate. She was the one, by the way, who erected the marker. And probably paid for it, too. Kays is not mentioned in either of the two books used to authenticate his role in the war. I have my doubts, no matter what the oral history was. I have another relative, a McAlister, whose service, when I looked into it, was nothing. He basically waited on one side of a hill while some Indians waited on the other. Then everyone went home. Just my take on John Kays. I could be wrong. Carolyn

Also Warren Co., NJ was also formed from Sussex Co., so I do believe that Warren Co.
My GG Grandfather was Anthony Kays, Born 1823 in Sussex Co., NJ. His Father listed on his death cert., as John kays. I am unable to connect to the correct John Kays. Snell's book does a diservice to most of the Sussex Co familes of that time, because only certain people were put in his book. It is very incomplete. I have not been able to find any information in the book. Anthony married Elizabeth Handy on 19 Oct 1843 in Sussex Co., NJ. Any new info would be of great help. I believe that Anthony may have had two brothers, Amos, born Nov 1831, & James, born 1833. There may have been more in the family.

Thank You,
Jame Kays

My mother has sought verification in offical records, but has not found it.

Mr. Kays. my name is James Kays I live in saline county missouri. My Kays line is believed to have arrived in America in the 1700"s. I have always believed that the Kays from N.J. were related to my line, but have no proof of that. Many of the names in my line are the same as your line. My line came from Philadelphia to Kentucky to missouri. You should check into having a DNA test done at myfamilytree.com. I have had a test done with them. It is the only way i know to break through the Brick wall. I have been unable to break through for ten years. Feel free to contact me for information.

James Kays

My Kays line begins in Orange, Essex County, New Jersey. Then it moves to Liberty, Sullivan County, New York.
We finally end up in the Philadelphia area.
Hezekiah Kays is the first Kays in America that I have found. He came between 1820 and 1845. He married Mary Burnet in 1844 and then Phebe A. Rayno in 1856.
Anything that looks familiar, please drop a note to me.
I'm most interested in his son James E. Kays who married Lydia Ward.
