Sarah and her sister Margaret are listed in the 1880 orphanage in cleveland. I am still piecing together why they were there. I believe their father and mother both were deceased. However, my grandfather James Lawrence Henry was born after that date. Sarah in 6 and Margaret is 4 in 1880. Margaret remained there for 9 yeaars. Later Margaret ran a children's home in New Castle from 1903 until her death in 1940. It was called the Margaret L. Henry children's home.

Winifred Mary Kearns Williamson Cow thief?

Any one have any ideas how to find out?

My grandfather Paul Williamson told me that one of his female relatives lived in Ireland and wanted to come to the US. (He told me the name but I do not remember it.) The story is that she wanted to come to the US but they were not letting people out willy nilly. Her family and the neighbors came up with a plan. The neighbors would claim she stole their cow, so she would be shipped to America. She would then work and bring the neighbors family over first and then her family.

The thing is, his mother and father were the first in his family in the US so it makes sense the story was about his mother right?

Winifred Mary Kearns Williamson was b. between 1890 and 1892 She died of cancer in 1937

My grandfather had a book documenting all of it (so I know proof exists because I saw it) but it disappeared after his death.

I am not sure where to look to find the proof.

Interesting, as my grandfather was Joseph Mathew Kerans, b. 1860 in Montreal Canada. His father was Mathew Joseph -- from Ireland to Montreal. My gf came to the US as a minor with his family (father had died) and settled in MA.

Hello! I am also researching this side of my family. I am the daughter of John H. Speckman, son of Sarah T. Kearns. I recognize your last name- my dad said that he shared the attic with his cousin Donald Dawson when he came to live at Brooklyn Street after his parent's divorce. He said it with a big smile- must have been a good memory, sharing the attic. I know these were difficult times for him.
Martha Speckman Shaffer

Hi, I am to Sarah Henry Kearns who lived in Cleveland, Ohio. Her sister Margaret L. Henry and she were in the St. Joseph Women's Asylum in Cleveland in 1880. I was not sure why, but believe one or both parents died. Sarah's mother was Sarah Hines born in Northern Ireland and her father was Lawrence Henry. they were married in Liverpool, England. My grandfather was James Henry who I believe was born in 1881? He married Christina Ponick in Youngstown, Ohio where he had been a boarder at her parents' home.Sarah Henry married John Kearns. Their children were John, Mary, Lawrence, Joseph, James Sarah, and Loretta

Hi, I am also researching the Kearns from Cleveland. Sarah Henry Kearns was my grandfather's sister or stepsister. I don't have much background on the Henry family. Sarah's mother was Sarah Hines and her father was Lawrence Henry. Sarah Henry married John Kearns in 1884. Their children were John, Mary, Lawrence, Joseph, James, Sarah and Loretta.Sarah and her sister Margaret L. Henry were in an orphanage in Cleveland in 1880.Margaret later ran an orphanage in New Castle named the Margaret L. Henry Children's Home from 1903 until her death in 1940.

I am looking for information about my Great Grandmother Kathryn Kearns and her brother William Kearns. I believe they come from County Mayo but know nothing about their parents. I believe Kathryn (Kate or Katie) was born around 1900ish and came to the US at the age of around 17 or 18. Does anyone have any information they can provide? I would greatly appreciate it, thank you!

My Samuel Kearns was born in the 1850's, in Ohio. His wife was Jane Taylor, who survived him by many years. Father - Albert Kearns, mother - Elizabeth Harrod Kearns. Samuel died of a bowel obstruction in Ohio, at age 43. He had two daughters, an infant, and a 20 yr. old at that time, and one son, Frank, who lived and died in Knox Co. Frank was my husband's grandfather.

Very interesting to find a Kearns family living in Newton in 1891, which is next door to Kirkham.
My Kearns family mystery lies in this area as my Grandfather Frank Kearns is found in the 1901 census under the name George Kearns in the Kirkham workhouse age 5 born Preston Lancashire, he never knew how he came to be in the workhouse or who his family was, maybe there may be a connection or not.
Thanks for your post, very interesting.

KEARNS from Newton and then Miles Platting. How to find Maiden name?

According to the 1901 Census, Mark and Bridget Kearns lived with their children Owen, Winifred, Margaret, Mark and Mary in Miles Platting, Lancashire. In the 1891 Census, they lived in Newton, Lancashire. The first children were born in Sheffield, Yorkshire according to the census. According to the little I can find on the FamilySearch.org 1911 Census, the parents were from Ballymote, Co. Sligo, Ireland.

Apparently, the birth records did not put down the mother's maiden name until 1911.

Any leads on finding Bridget's maiden name? I am thinking it is Cawley and that she was married using the name Winifred...and that the family is part of my tree.

Thanks. Kathy

PS. I did post this to the Kearns board as well

The GRO birth indexes don't show the mothers maiden name at that time , but the birth certificates will. Order a certificate for one of the children and it should say mother "Bridget Kearns ...formerly xxxxx"

Hi Gail: Thanks for your response. My Owen also had a son Owen and I had to look up his age. Good find. I wish it were my Great Great Grandfather. He was born in 1805 and his wife Sarah in 1815, both in Ireland. I found them in the 1850 US Census in Albany, with my GGF and the name was Kerness. Those who did the Census certainly had poetic license. Thanks again.

Jim

Jim: I found Owen Kearns in 1870 in NY, wife Julia and son James (1 year old). In 1870, he was 35 years old and estimated to have been born in 1835. Is this your ancestor?

I have limited my focus to the St Louis area until I know I have the right "Owen," of which there are many, though the spelling of the name is quite creative.

Gail

Hi Cate

Have you tried irish-roots.ie ? they hold thousands of baptismal & marriage records of Ireland going back to the 1700s. There is a fee for the records though (5 Euros, I think), also theres familysearch.org but that is for beyond 1850s in Ireland so probably irish-roots.ie would be better.
I just had a search on their and could only find one that fit your description.
Mathew Kerns - born 1816 in Meath - to Owen (or Eugene) & Jane Kerns. Siblings include: Thomas (1814), Mathew, James (1818), Catharine (1820), Patrick (1822), Christian (1824), & Anne Kearns (1826).

Hope thats useful.

Best Wishes
Dermot

Thanks, Dermot,
I have no idea where my Mathew came from in Ireland nor who his siblings might have been. He was born between 1811-1816 and died in Montreal in 1868. He was the gf of over 40 children. His wife, Rosetta Hopkins, died in Danvers, MA in 1902. The search goes on.
Cate
