Conrad Keck of Ohio

I am researching Sophia Keck, daughter of Conrad Keck, who married John Heintz.

I have found two biographical sketches of John Heintz of Ohio that talk about his first wife, Sophia Keck or Kech. She probably died in the 1840s. One book mentions that her father was a prominent land owner in Trumbull County, Ohio named Conrad Keck.

I can only find one Conrad Keck in Ohio on the family trees here - the Conrad born in 1764 in PA - but none of the family trees list a daughter Sophia. The dates match, but alas no Sophia, so I am not sure what to do. I can't find any documentation for Conrad Keck, his wife or his children. If anyone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Jimbob:

Thank you very much for your polite and well reasoned response.

We, too, have the death, in 1904, of 1st wife Elizabeth, Ming's marriage to Bertha and their long time residence in Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois. Lots of info about Ming & family but nothing additional (so far) connecting Ming to Peter.

"High standards?" Perhaps. However, we've learned, even the hard copy "facts" on BMD certificates (that we see with our own eyes) are often in error. It is only later, if at all, and after much more research, that we must conclude that our (fictitious) GGGM Maggie fibbed about her age on the marriage cert. in 1850 and that error was carried to the grave on the death cert & tombstone. A few decades ago, only close kin might be aware of the error, unfortunately, in the internet age, if the first error was posted in a tree then, through "cut & paste research" by others, the error spreads to very distant cousins.

In any case, I'm not posting a tee but, with your permission, I will "cut & paste" your message to my research notes on Peter Ming Keck, connect the dots to Henry & Mary, and move on.

Again, thanks & best regards,
Bill
You have very high standards. The 1945 Illinois death certificate cinches it for me - same parents and birth year as Peter.

One possible avenue of search for you could be his wife. Note at the time of his death he was married to Bertha Sullivan, not the Elizabeth Brock you found. Perhaps he was widowed or divorced? A search of those records may lead you to additional information.

You may also have seen some Family Trees on Ancestry.com that list a "Peter Mayne Keck" as a son of Henry Clay and Mary Ragle. Unfortunately they list no source information so I have no idea if they have made the right connection. However, it is possible he started going by some variant of his middle name once he became an adult - but just speculation. Good luck.

Good luck.

Elizabeth Florence Brock 7/7/1896 in Monroe Co., Indiana. One son Hollis Myron Keck b. 5/17/1901 Ogden, Utah.

"Ming" is the name used in census (1900 - 1930), affidavit of birth of son, & online marriage & death but "Ming" is not in 1880 census for Henry & Mary.

Does anyone have a CLUE about who Ming really is?
Regards
Bill

Mr. Wilson: I have long thought that there is a distinct possibility that the John and Andrew Keck referred to in Yoder's entry for Anna Barbara Keck are two of the sons of Henrich (Geck) Keck, the 1732 immigrant from the Ober Pfalz region. If you would care to have me provide information about this immigrant and his children, etc., please contact me at hrauch@infionline.net.
Pennsylvania German Immigrants (1709-1786) edited by Don Yoder lists in the emmigrants from Wuerttemberg 3 Kecks anna Barbara Keck *Oberiflingen B. 2-17-1726, daughter of Andreas Keck to the "New World" // 3PA, 19, 109; John and Andrew Keck, Salisbury Tp, Northhampton Co., PA, 1785.---- Does anyone hava a suggestion the the relationship between John and Andrew. An Andrew Keck located in what is now WV about 1800 with John moving in with his family about 1820. Census records are of little help as the result of multiple Andrews and Johns in what is available in the 1700s.

I just enrolled in ancestry.com today because I ran across a family tree dated June 1, 1916 with approximately 100 names on it. At the top of the lsit is Rosa Ziegler Keck, married to Karl Keck, they had 5 children including Sylvia and Lydia Keck, could these possibly form your family tree.

Sincerely,
Steve

Biographical and portrait cyclopedia of Monongalia, Marion and Taylor counties, West Virginia comprising about five hundred sketches of prominent and representative citizens of these counties. Rush, West & Company, Philadelphia, Pa. 1895
pp. 44 Phillip H. Keck
What a man makes of himself, and not what he is made by the aid of family or the influence of friends, is a record that he can proudly leave behind him for the inspection of the world; and the field of action in which a life of activity or usefulness may be carved out need not be national in its dimensions. Such has been the fortune of the subject of this sketch. He has won for himself the high position in life he now holds through his own efforts, and for almost a half century has been one of the most prominent and successful attorneys in the state of West Virginia. He is a son of John and Catharine (Creichbaum) Keck, and was born in the city of Reading, Pennsylvania, on March 6, 1820. His paternal grandfarther was George W. Keck, of German lineage, and a native of Pennsylvania.
In 1823 the parents of P. H. Keck emigrated to Monongalia county, Virginia, now West Virginia, settling in the western part of the county, where his father proceeded to convert a portion of the wilderness into a farm and a home, a fit place for the dwelling of man. The grandfather and his son John Keck, both gave their services in the defense of their country's rights in the War of 1812.
John Keck was born in Pennsylvanin in 1788, came with the family to the country where he lived the remainder of his days, dying in 1865. His marriage to Catharine Creichbaum, daughter of Phillip Creichbaum, resulted in the birth of thirteen children.
Philip H. Keck obtained a good common school education in the schools of the county, but the most essential elements of his education were obtained by general reading and attrition with the world. When a young man he learned the trace of a tailor, which trade he followed less than a year, when he entered upon the study of the law, a profession more commensurate with his tastes and talents. He read in the office of General R. C. Allen and R. L. Berkshire, of Morgantown, and was admitted in October, 1844, to practice in the courts of West Virginia. He entered at once with fervor upon the practice of his chosen profession, which he practiced uninterruptedly until January 1, 1893, when he withdrew from the exactions of an active practice, and now lives in happy retirement in his county home, on-half mile west of Morgantown, on the banks of the historic Monongahela.
Politically he is a democrat but has never had the time nor the inclination to enter actively the arena of politics. He served as prosecuting attorney one term, from 1852 to 1856, but on account of a large and increasing business refused a re-nomination at the expiration of that term.
Mr. Keck has been twice married; his first marriage was with Mary Johnson, a daughter of Bennett Johnson. To this union were born seven children; all are deceased except Leonidas V., who was educated in the schools of Morgatown, read law with his father, and was admitted to the bar in 1882, formed a partnership with his father in 1886, which lasted until his father retired in 1893, when he succeeded to his father's practice. He is regardedas an able and talented attorney.
Philip H. Keck married, as his second wife, Anna Brown, daughter of Reason H. Brown, on January 1, 1889. As a lawyer Mr. Keck's comprehensive mind was peculiarly fitted to grapple with the difficult quesitons arising out of a complicated case of law. His clear statement of the facts and relative points of the case, his strong and convincing arguments, his logical conclusions, his comprehensive summary of evidence and his masterly exposition of the law made him one of the foremost lawyers of West Virginia and drew to him a large an appreciative clientage, and he withdraws fromt he profession so ... sdorned happy in the consciousness of having given his best services to those who intrusted their interests to his keeping.
END
My gr. gr. grandfather was Theophilus Keck. His wife's name was Christena. He had a brother named Jacob. The other siblings I have not heard about. Theophilus married Nancy Greenwood in IN. One child is my gr. grandfsther Hiram Keck. They all lived in AR for a time then moved to OK. Hiram is buried in OK. Do not know where Theophilus is buried. I think this the same line as yours. If so,would like other info on Adam. However in my records he is Johan Keck. Alternate sp--Theophilous.

SISTERS Magdalena and Maria Keck from Aigis, Germany

I've been trying to break through my Keck wall for a year now and am so desperate for any help. My Great Grandmother was Magdalena Keck (B: abt 03 Sep 1890) who immigrated in 1911 from Germany (near Wilhams) with her sister Maria (15 Jun 1892).

Both sisters settled in California, Magdalena married Josef Schmidl and Maria married Michael Zoerlaut. I believe that the sisters had 2 brothers, Ignaz and Alois, as well as two other sisters, Elisabeth and Sophie... but I am unable to obtain any detail on their parents except for that their mother went by Christina Keck and died in Germany about 1901. If anyone thinks they can help, I would truly appreciate it. Contact me anytime at reganmiller127@yahoo.com and thank you in advance! ~Regan

Hi - If the Don you are addressing is Don Slivka, I'm sorry but I must tell you that Don died quite some time ago. I, along with several other Keck researchers, collaborated with him on an annotated version of the 1901 J. A Keck History, among other things. I personally do not have any information on WVA Keck's. If the H. Geck/Keck to whom you refer is Henrich Geck/Keck, the 1732 immigrant, I have tons of info about him and many of his descendants, but none of the ones I know about migrated to W. Virginia. If you have reason to believe your Keck line definitely descends from the 1732 immigrant, please get in touch with me directly at hrauch@infionline.net Hilary Rauch

Hi Don,

I saw your email address on a forum referencing the Keck family. My ggreatmother was Flora Keck 1890 - 1962 - daughter of Johnathan Jack Keck 1852 - 1909 and Mary Jane Ballard 1856 - 1934.

I was wondering if you had any pictures from this Keck linage or even of any Keck further beyond them up to H Geck/Keck by chance?

Also my grandmother Dororthy Jane Burns (Smith) (Spurlock) (McGraw) was Flora's daughter. There is some question as to who her father really was, but she said that Flora had 11 children. So far I can only find evidence of:

Dorothy Jane father ?
Rosa Yeager father Jerry W Yeager 1886 -
Ida Yeager
Herbert Yeager

Supposedly Flora never married any of the fathers of all her children. We suspect that she took the Yeager last name as her own, but have found no evidence of marriage. She eventually married William White but did not have any children with him.

Do you know of her other children by chance? I can't find anything concrete that says that Dorothy was Flora's daughter. My aunt can't find her birth certificate. Any help that you could possible provide on this family mystery would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, my name is Carolyn Busha and I just read your message. I am a descendant of Charles William (born 1721)and Appalonia Keck. I know that there is a connection to the Pennsylvania Keck's but I have been unable to make that connection to date. The records we have viewed all state that his father was born in 1719 but, I hardly think his father was only 2 years old. Makes no sense at all. I have wondered if he was another brother to Heinreich (b. 02/23/1710) and Johannes Jacob Keck (B. 1718). If you have any information that would help, I would greatly appreciate it. Maybe this is a question that will never be answered. If I knew where Charles was born, (I believe it was Germany), I would have a starting place. My email address is carolynbusha@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

I have been unable to make the connection to the Keck's of Pennsylvania and I am hoping that you may have the answer in the pages of your book. If you can scan those documents and forward them to me I will be very grateful. Hopefully, we may be able to share information if there is a connection.
Re: George Keck Margaret Warren

This posting is very old, but just in case.

This is what got me interested.

Baptism fo Jacob Cagg, son of George Cagg and Caty Cochnot born April 6, 1806. Sponsors: Francis Rupert, Elizabeth Cochnot.
#3649 page 162
Baptism Record of Caughnawaga Reformed Church, Fonda, NY now the Reformed Church of Fonda 1758-1899.
Transcribed and Indexed by Arthur Kelly from original documents.

I was researching Francis Rupert, who was a Loyalist from Johnstown, NY who got land in Osnabruck, Ontario, but then went back to NY before his 1794 marriage to Elizabeth Coughnet. Then his eldest son Adam went back to Osnabruck in 1826 to claim that land in his father's name..

Regarding the baptism of George Keck in 1781 in NJ. This is right in the middle of the Revolutionary War, where people were extremely displaced and it is quite possible that George was born in Long Island NY with a baptism recorded in NJ.
I have seen the name George Keck often in land records from the York County, Ontario area. Especially very early land records in Etobicoke. George Keck received land grants fairly early (1793 or so) around (what is now Toronto) and did not seem to have settled there.
My guess is that the Keck, just like the Coughnet and the Rupert were split between Loyalist and Patiots.

There was a George Kuck who petitioned for land in 1812 in York,(see Upper Canada Land Petitions) George Kuck, with one female and one male under 16 was on the census of York in 1813 and 1814. In 1814, he was pathmaster from the Don river to the East line of the Township.
George Kuck of York, was a sergeant in the York Militia when York capitulated to General Dearborn in April 1813.
Hopefully, this will help and not confuse the issue further.
Anyway, then this George Kuck disappears. Went somewhere else?
