Re: Julius A. and Lucy Keeler of Kansas

Julius Keeler married Lucy Fleming five months after his first wife, Anna Davenport, died giving birth to my paternal grandmother. Lucy died Jan 5, 1926 in Lawrence, Ks. and is buried in the Olathe, KS. cemetery. My brother and I recently purchased a grave marker for her and her only two children who died in infancy. Lucy was the step-mother to my grandmother and her five surviving siblings. My father considered Lucy as his close grandmother as did other family members. Julius died Apr 9, 1920 in Garden City, KS. and is buried there. Lucy is buried with Anna Davenport Keeler in the Davenport cemetery plots.

Julius A. and Lucy Keeler of Kansas

I am searching for this couple. Lucy Keeler, nee Fleming, is in my family tree. I have birth and living records of her until after the 1861 Census of Canada West, at which point she simply vanishes. Several findings on ancestry.com suggest that she married Julius Keeler (I don't know where) and they settled in Olathe, KS. The 1880 United States Census presents this couple and their children, showing data for Lucy that fits to almost to perfection (age is correct, place of birth is wrong, parents birth places are correct). I also have other items proving the connection.

If there are descendents listening, please, i would like to get to know you.

Kansas

A STANDARD HISTORY OF KANSAS AND KANSANS, written and compiled by William E. Connelley, Secretary of the Kansas State Historical Society, Topeka. [Revised ed.] Chicago: Lewis Publishing Co., 1919, c1918, Melvin A. Mosher, “MELVIN A. MOSHER, whose record of activities in Kearny County includes farming, ranching, horse, mule and cattle raising, also service in a public capacity, has been a Kansan since 1870, when at the age of thirteen his parents moved into the state and located near Admire in Lyon County. — Mr. Mosher was born March 26, 1857, in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. The name Mosher is of French origin, but many generations ago the Moshers became allied by marriage with people of English blood. His grandfather, Elias Mosher, was a native of Eastern New York, was a lumberman, married Miss Deal, and their only son was George W. Mosher. — George W. Mosher was born at Fort Ticonderoga, New York, and after his marriage moved out to Wisconsin, living first in Milwaukee and then in Fond do Lac County. He married Agnes Knight, a daughter of David Knight of Whitehall, New York. She died in Arkansas and is buried near Hot Springs. George W. Mosher’s calling was that of a farmer. He was a democrat in politics, took considerable interest in local affairs and died near Fall River, Kansas, in 1888, at sixty-five years of age. He was a member of the Protestant Methodist Episcopal Church. He and his wife had the following children: Kate, wife of C. W. Cox, of Hot Springs, Arkansas; Eugene, of Arizona; Melvin A.; Carrie, wife of George Howell, of Hot Springs, Arkansas; Clarence H., of Idaho; and George E., living in Montana. — Melvin A. Mosher completed his education in the schools of Lyon County, Kansas, and spent his boyhood and youth as a farmer. On reaching his majority he went to Texas and found employment as a cowboy with the Best Brothers. For this firm he helped move their stock from Collin County to the staked plains of Texas, and remained with that one ranch outfit about two years. After another summer in Kansas he went to Arizona and was employed near Flagstaff and in Williams Valley. Part of that time he was running cattle and again was working for a railroad construction company building the Atlantic and Pacific, now part of the Santa Fe system. — After this interesting experience in the far West Mr. Mosher returned to Kansas and engaged in farming and stock raising in Lyon County but soon moved to Greenwood County, where he spent fourteen years near Fall River. While there he built up a small ranch, developed a good grade of Hereford cattle, and became a dealer and shipper for several years. His stock interests made him a man of considerable prominence throughout that section of the state. — From Greenwood County Mr. Mosher came to Kearny County in the fall of 1903 and located at Lakin. Here for three years he was in the hardware, lumber, furniture and undertaking business under the name Mosher & Armstrong. After selling his interests in that line he devoted himself to ranching and land dealing. Mr. Mosher began buying land soon after coming to Kearny County. He paid 75 cents an acre for pasture land in the Sand Hills region, and also bought a tract in the Arkansas Valley. This he improved and developed to some extent as an irrigation project. From time to time he added to his land holdings until an opportunity came to sell them at an advantage. He then began ranching in the county, stocking up with cattle and horses, and operating as a buyer and seller and shipper. He sold his ranch and then settled on three sections of land in Grant and Kearny counties and began raising horses and mules. He has handled both draft horses and mules, and of late has developed an important feature in handling running horses. — In his business affairs he has been liberally prospered, and how he stands in a public way is well illustrated by his election in 1908 to the office of sheriff, in which as a democrat he succeeded in overcoming the heavy normal republican majority of the county. He succeeded F. P. McAlister as sheriff and gave two terms of creditable service. His special efforts were made in keeping down violations of the prohibitory law and contributing so far as his official functions made it possible to a better moral atmosphere in the county. Mr. Mosher is an active Mason, being affiliated with the Blue Lodge, Royal Arch Chapter and Knight Templar Commandery and also with Isis Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Salina. — In Greenwood County, Kansas, in December, 1886, he married Mrs. Alice Keeler. She was born near Oakland, Indiana, in 1856, daughter of Houston and Amelia Wade. She was one of a family of four daughters and three sons. Mr. and Mrs. Mosher have two sons, Ross, a farmer and rancher associated with his father, married Ruby Rider, daughter of George R. Rider, and they have four children, Pearl, Iva, Melvin A., Jr., and Esther, the last two being twins. The other son is Dale, now in Camp Cody, Deming, New Mexico, in training for our war for world liberty.”
Children of Melvin Arthur Mosher and Marion Alice (Wade): i. They are Pete and Cheryl Zarnowski and would love to hear from you. Their email is cpzarnowski@yahoo.com. I hope this works and they get to hear from you as it would make them excited. Thanks.

Definitely Esther Hall, unfortunatley the family beyond John and Esther are my brick wall, their families were part of the Oulton Congregational Chapel and the parish records are incomplete (no entry for John but there is one for Esther) also I can find no record of their marriage which may tie in with the Oulton Chapel as they didn't officially get married, drop me an email at nick_keeler@hotmail.com and I can share the document that I have pulled together over a number of years - nick

Hi there only just come across your posting, I am related to this line through Johns Parents, I still live in England, the information I have is as follows:
John Keeler - Was baptised on 25th February 1787 and was the first child of John and Esther Keeler. He married Susan Pegg on 23rd June 1806. Their banns were read on the 8th, 15th and 22nd of June. Susan was born 9th February 1783 in Wood Dalling and baptised on the 19th of February. She was the fourth child and third daughter of Joseph Pegg and Alice Doughty. From the records it appears that although they were married at Wood Dalling they were living at Heydon for the birth of their first child, but returned to Wood Dalling as all their subsequent children were baptised here. In the records from the Poor Law Unions for 1836 there is an entry of those families from Heydon who were seeking to emigrate to Canada and on 8th August 1836 there are listed the following entries leaving for Quebec:

John Keeler Snr	50
Susan Keeler	53
EsterKeeler	23
Maria Keeler	18
Alice Keeler	17
Feby Keeler	15
Sophia Keeler	13
Robert Keeler	11
Does this help you and I have more information - nick in bristol

Ruth would be my brother’s 1st cousin 2X removed. I wouldn’t figure that out without my genealogy program! I’ve been researching the Keeler family in Michigan for my brother and sister, who have a different father. They are an interesting family and difficult to study because they seem to marry and divorce several times. Glenn Keeler (1886-1975) married Christine Slater (1898-?). Glenn’s parents were Irvin (AKA Erwin, Ervin) Keeler (1856-1934) and Ida Isadora Loveland (1863-?). Irvin’s parents were William Keeler (abt. 1828-1890) and Harriet ? (1830-?). William was born in Connecticut and his mother’s name was Abagail. He was also a Civil War veteran.

I do not know if she is living. Ruth Ardell Keeler (Mestemaker, Lagha) is my biological mother. She left when I was around 2 years of age. I was told by my father that she died but later learned from his sister that this was not true. From my understanding she had had other children previous to their marriage and my father was willing to adopt all children. When I was around 18 I saw birth certificates of other children by Ruth, which my father had in his possession, but unfortunately he lost all vital records at some point. I do not know when they divorced, only that they were married June 19th 1948 in Los Angeles county (I have a certified copy) at the time they lived in Long Beach, Ca., he worked for Bethleham Steel and she was .a restaurant waitress. I was born June 30th 1949 in Long Beach, Ca.... I would love any ancestry which you can share. By the way who are you and what is your relationship if any to Ruth ?

Is Ruth still living? Is she your mother or stepmother? When did she and your father divorce? I have more of the Keeler ancestry if you're interested. I found a record of divorce for her and Charles Kauch for Sept 5, 1984.

I just saw this and am very interested you see my father Simon Thomas Lagha was married 6.19.1948 to Ruth Ardell Mestemaker, my name is Barbara Lagha. Her maiden name was Ruth Ardell Keeler (Keller in 1930 census), her father was Glen Keeler (Keller) and her mother was Christine Arnold. They had 2 Children: Ruth born about 1923 and Wesley born about 1918. At the time of the 1930 census they were living in Kalamazoo, Michigan in the township of Oshtemo.

Hello,
Don't know if a GEDCOM exists and not sure what you are searching for. I fell on this website quite by accident.
I am Edwin Ballou Keeler Jr. from Connecticut. I was born in 1949 and and a direct decendent of Ralph Keeler Sr. born in England 1613. I do have a hard bound copy genealogy of John Rockwell of Stamford, Conn 1641 and Ralph Keeler of Hartford, Conn 1639 if interested. This genealogy has been handed down in my family and was authored by James Boughton of Brooklyn, NY. Publisher is William F. Jones 73 Broad Street, New York dated 1903.

More info on William C. Keeler of Illinois

Would anyone have information on William C. Keeler who was
the father of two daughters named Mica and Mabel and lived
in the De Kalb, IL area where he was the yardmaster for the Chicago Great Western railroad. In 1890 he married Annetta Aurner. The 1910 census shows him farming in Brazoria, Texas.
His father may have been James Keeler of Newton, IL. I would
be especially interested to learn where and when he died and the birth mother's name of his daughters. Your help would be very appreciated.
