Keenan, Gunn, McCaffery from Fermanagh, Ireland to Philadelphia, PA

Hi everyone,

John Keenan (b. abt. 1829 in Fermanagh – d. 1884 in Philadelphia, PA *have death cert.*) married Susan Gunn (b. abt.1833 in Fermanagh – d. 1893 in Philadelphia, PA *have death cert.*).

They were to be married in the USA but not sure if Erie, PA (per relative) or in Philadelphia, PA. I’m still checking this information out. However, all their children were born in Philadelphia.

John Keenan and Susan Gunn had John (b. 1852), Patrick (b. 1856), James (b.1858), Mary, Joseph (1866-1933 *g-grandfather*), and Mary Ann (b. 1868). All the children lived in Philadelphia. [Joseph Keenan (my g-grandfather married Annie Lyons].

I do know that Susan Gunn's brother, Patrick Gunn, also came to the USA. Patrick Gunn was born abt. 1847 per the 1870 census. Patrick Gunn was married to a woman named Elizabeth. They were living in Philadelphia, PA with the two Aunts.

The story goes Susan and Patrick Gunn's parents died and their Aunts raised them. The Aunts were Ann and Catherine McCaffery. Two years after John Keenan came to the USA, the Aunts (McCaffery) took Susan to the USA to marry John Keenan. By 1870, Ann and Catherine McCaffery were here in Philadelphia living with Patrick Gunn.

Two Aunts of Susan Gunn Keenan are:
Ann McCaffery* – born abt1815, Ireland (died after 1880)
Catherine McCaffery* – born abt 1817, Ireland (died between 1870-1880)
Per Census, surname was spelled McCaffery

I only know the families came from Fermanagh, but I have no idea where in Fermanagh they are from. I have leads such as trying to get some more Marriage Acts for the children, I believe I have Patrick Gunn’s naturalization papers coming in, I also have microfilm for the Royal Irish Constabulary for I was told by a relative that John Keenan was served in it.

I’m still lost as to where to begin. I would love to find out more!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Trish
brujaojos@yahoo.com
Keenan, Gunn, McCaffrey: Fermanagh to Philadelphia

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum. I do hope you can help me. I am trying to find information on my ancestors as to where in Fermanagh they are from.

Attached is a PDF file showing all the information and source information I have on the family.

http://www.geocities.com/wheretheacornfell/keenan.pdf

Briefly, this is the information I have on them.

John Keenan
born: about 1829 in Fermanagh, Ireland
died: August 10, 1884 in Philadelphia, PA

John Keenan married Susan Gunn

Susan Gunn
born: about 1833 in Fermanagh, Ireland
died: December 11, 1893 in Philadelphia, PA

They had the following children:

John Keenan
born: August 23,1852 - Philadelphia, PA

Patrick Keenan
born: March 22, 1854 - Philadelphia, PA
died: June 25, 1926 - Philadelphia, PA
married: Margaret McRory

Mary Ann Keenan
born: August 12, 1856

James Keenan
born: February 22, 1858 in Philadelphia, PA

Elizabeth (Mary Ella) Keenan
born: October 28, 1860 - Philadelphia, PA
died: July 9, 1873 - Philadelphia, PA

Joseph Francis Keenan (my great-grandfather)
born: January 20, 1865 - Philadelphia, PA
died: July 4, 1933 - Philadelphia, PA
married: Anna Marie Lyons - July 25, 1888 in Philadelphia, PA

Mary Ann Keenan
born: September 4, 1867 - Philadelphia, PA
died: April 16, 1923 - Philadelphia, PA
married: Charles Alonzo Hood - May 5, 1888 - Philadelphia, PA

***

The story I was told was that the two Aunts of Susan Gunn whose names were Ann McCaffrey and Catherine McCaffrey took Susan Gunn to the USA to marry John Keenan.

I also know that Susan Gunn had a brother named Patrick Gunn born about 1847.

At this point in time, I am waiting patiently on information from the Philadelphia Catholic Archdiocese for information from their Archives.

My other problem is that Philadelphia Death Records from 1800-1915 do not list parents' names unless they were a child. However, on John Keenan's Death Certificate, it did list parents as John Keenan and Susan Unknown. But I'm not sure if that's a mistake ..... I'm thinking that one of the children gave the information and misunderstood the question "what is the parents' names?" And they gave his own parents' names which would have been John and Susan. (Sorry if this paragraph is confusing. Just trying to explain some of my problems I am finding)

Any suggestions, comments, or help would greatly be appreciated.

Smile for me!Smile
Trish

I am looking for the family these Lindsays born in Ireland and raised families in Scotland:

William Lindsay and Elizabeth Harrison bc 1770 Ireland (no idea where.... unusually they were RC.... and that may help to narrow the search a little although I have had not had much luck so far)

They had 2 sons: William Lindsay b1798 and James b1800 these brothers married two McCrudden girls Mary and Bridget and they lived in Eldeslie and Johnstone Scotland c 1850'S

There was almost certainly a sister Anne b c1796 who married John Keenan c1795 Ireland

William and Mary had a daughter Anne b 1826 who married John Neason or Nysson at St Margaret's RC in Johnstone

James and Bridget had a son Peter b c1843 who married Jane Glendinning at St Margaret's RC chapel

both William and James lived in Scotland there is no evidence that Anne ever did.

There is an Elizabeth Lindsay bc 1824 who married William or Satham Hodgeson/Hutchison bc 1822 in Cumberland and Colbeck England..they came to Johnstone Scotland and family all have the same names as the others above. I think this Elizabeth is a daughter of either William or more likely James given the children's names and her husband William Hodgeson/Hutchison converted to RC faith when daughters Mary 1864 and Elizabeth 1866 were baptised at St Margaret's RC Johnstone..there is a Peter born later.
Previously there were Joseph b 1849; Bridget b 1851 and James b1854 all in England and assume Coldbeck, Cumberland.

By 1881 Elizabeth and her daughter Bridget are living in 109 St Camlachie - Glasgow Barony parish

A later Elizabeth m a MAGEE in Johnstone

Anne Lindsay and John Keenan are my gr gr gr grandparents

If you have any info please let me know

Thanks

Paul Thomas Keenan
Giffnock
East Renfrewshire
Scotland

Keenans in County Down Ireland/Johnstone Chapelhall Scotland/New York/New Jersey/Boston MA/ Illinois/Iowa

A group of Keenans left County Down, Ireland in c1850 and landed in Johnstone and Chapelhall/Holytown areas of Scotland. Some settled in Scotland and others, after a brief period, left for the USA

The original family were John Keenan bc 1800 & Ann nee Lindsay their son Thomas Keenan b c1830 and his wife#1 Cecelia McCaffrey married in St John The Baptist RC. Gilford,Tullylish Co Down, Ireland in March 1854 before moving to Johnstone, and Charles Keenan bc 1830 and Catherine nee Grant to Holytown, Chapelhall all Scotland

From 1870's Arthur keenan & Catherine Treanor also married in Gilford Tullylish in 1853 left to live in Johnstone Scotland and then finally settled with family in the New Haven/Meridan area of Connecticut USA. there are loads of their family/progeny around and we would love to hear from some of them as we have detailed info on Irish and Scots origins.

From 1880's James Keenan B 1859 Ballymoney/Fofannybane, Kilcoo Ireland & Annie nee Murphy left Chapelhall Scotland with 3 daughters Mabel Mary, Susan and Roseanna and lived in La Salle, Illinois, there are living relatives in Iowa now

William Keenan and Sarah Thompson both born Ireland and married in Gilford, Tullylish 1850, then moved to Johnstone, Scotland c1865. Their son John Keenan b c1859 Tullylish and his wife Susan nee Gillan married in 1881 St Margaret's RC Johnstone Scotland 1906/7 they sailed to NYC and settled in Suffolk, Boston MA. (children elder son William b September 1881, Alexander * b 7th December 1884 Johnstone, Scotland, Peter, Elizabeth, Susan, Helen OR Ellen, Mary, John & Sarah. In 1930 *Alexander was married to Mary and living in Rosindale Boston with 2 kids Elinor and John. I found an Alexander Keenan b c1885 in Scotland died in 1973 Empire Jefferson Ohio but unsure if this is the same person.

In 1923 Daniel Keenan bc 1896 is son son of William Keenan b c 1868 and Anne nee McDade. Grandson of Thomas Keenan b c 1830 in County Down and his wife#2 Catherine nee Donaghie or Donaghy. Daniel left Johnstone Scotland on the SS Cameronia to NYC and travelled to an address in New Jersey which we think may have been ficticious (Mr John Stone 164 Kearney Avenue New Jersey)

Daniel's 2 brothers Joseph b 1902 and Andrew b 1904 left Johnstone Scotland on board the SS Regina in Feb 1927 and arrived in NYC they meet up with Daniel and a T Keenan at 513 North Fourth St. Harrison New Jersey. I know that andrew had a son Andrew Keenan and daughter Rose Keenan.
There was a 4 th child sister Jean or Jane Keenan bc 1900 Johnstone, Scotland who married a man called Farrell they had 4 sons 1 called Daniel Keenan Farrel who had a daughter Lynn Keenan Farrell who married a man called Kerr.

Patrick Hugh Keenan was born in Fofannybane Kilcoo in April 1890 son of John Keenan b 1840 Kilcoo and Mary nee Hannah. John's parents Hugh keenan bc 1800 and Ann nee Morgan are related directly to Charles Keenan also of Kilcoo Co Down.

The Keenan family were definately living working and marrying in the 'Flax/Linen Mill' area of mid to south Co Down circa 1830/1860 and probably originated outside Co Down and Armagh, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Monaghan Louth are all possibilities

We have family details from Scotland and Ireland that date back to 1770 in Ireland...the Johnsotne Keenans lived in an area that has developed into Macca Row, which is acorruption of their original townland in Ireland ...probably MAGHER AND REAGH together.

If you know of anyone who has any info on these people we would all love to find out how they are getting on.... please let me know

Thanks for reading this and a warm and peaceful New Year to you all...whoever you are..in 2007

Slan go Foill

Paul

Scotland

I found a woman named Catherine Keenan in the social security index who was born Aug 3rd 1907 and died January 1981 who i think is my great great grandmother but I am not sure. I know Catherine married Alfred Rock, who I think was born in Peru, NY and that they had several children including my grandfather, Paul Rock. He was born April 26 1931 and died Oct 3rd 2000. Paul and his wife Esther (maiden name Boyle) lived and died in Port Henry (Essex County) NY for the majority of their lives.

Any information on Catherine Keenan or Alfred Rock like their true dates of birth/marriage/deaths or the names of their siblings/parent's names would be greatly appreciated.

Keenan Des Moines Iowa - Farrell connection

I am looking for Harold Keenan or his family who used to live in West Des Moines, Iowa. He was researching his families connection to the Farrell family from Ireland to Iowa which included Patrick Farrell>John Farrell>Mary and Alice Farrell who married Keenan brothers. Harold Keenan had contacted my great grandfather Lehan Ryan and his brothers and sisters about information from their side of the Farrell family. From the letters I have seen Harold Keenan was compiling a book about the Farrell family and I was hoping that it has not been lost.

Kansas and the Keenan Name

Though this is the internet, the Keenan family became a popular name name beginning in in the late 1800's for Kansans. Frances and Anna moved to Kansas in the mid to late 1800's. They had had several sons. One noteably was Patrick Keenan (born 1886), a succesful auctioneer. Between two marriages (widowed on first) he had seven sons and four daughters who all grew up on a small central Kansas farm near Seward (Great Bend). Several of Patrick's sons became successful lawyers, and all were successful in family or business, including Pat Jr, taking over the auctitoneer buisness. The Keenan name became a large part of the phone book in central KS, but many of the Grand Children of Patrick L. Keenan have since moved to bigger cities across the country, leaving central KS, most notably to Kansas City. Of the remaining children of Patrick, most still live in the Great Bend area. ** Please note that Patrick had step children from his second marriage to Mabel Pearl Gertude Simmons Folkerts Keenan (deceased). She had eight children, including two with Patrick. Together would have 77 grand children, with the youngest in 2008, a senior in college.

Apparently they were also in Canada in the 1930s.

Family background is that they were Catholics.

Can anyone provide information on these 3 brothers?

Ciaran
crosseyc@yahoo.co.uk

I believe they were born in Ireland....possibly Westmeath and immigrated over sometime between 1823 & 1851 . They had 7 kids (Micheal, Francis, Patrick, Bernard, Kate, William, & Mary). Any information would be great...I have hit a wall and cant go any further.

William Keenan - Londonderry Longshot

Hi,

I have been stuck finding a birth record, census listing or anything about William Kennan b. 1864/1866 d. 1947, Kilsyth, Scotland, possibly in Londonderry County. Our family thought our William was born in Omagh but a record for him could not be found. All military records list Londonderry as his birthplace.

I recently received a marriage record dated 1 Feb 1866 for possibly his parents, James Keenan (32), farmer, widower, and Mary Campbell (31), spinster taken place at the Roman Catholic Church in Greencastle, County Omagh. James lists his father as Peter Keenan. Mary lists her father as Barney Campbell, deceased. Witnesses were John McGurk and William Keenan. Being an 1866 marriage it does not fit with a potential birth of 1865, but it is the only marriage found so far in N. Ireland.

William married Jessie Wood Livingston (b.1863 Partick,Scotland) in Partick, Scotland 26 Jan 1886. Father Hugh Livingston, mother Jane Bryce Wood.

A daughter of William's was named Mary Campbell Kinnon, which seems to confirm the names of his parents.

With this marriage record I have new questions:

1. Are these his parents
2. Where/When was William born
3. Is Mary his mother or is he from the widower of James?
4. If born 1866, he could have been too young to marry w/o parents consent according to Ulster historical folks. Although this may be why he says they are both deceased in his marriage certificate.

I believe William joined the service in Ballincollig but reinlisted several times and eventually made his home in Glasgow, Scotland where the spelling of Keenan on his childrens birth certificates would have variation of Keenan to the name we know -- Mckinnon. On William's death record his mother was listed as Cameron not Campbell.

Here's what I know on his service:

Joins Royal Scots Greys 28 November, 1883 in Glasgow. Gives age as 19, so born 1864
Gets Married January 26 1886 in Glasgow, but is stationed in Aldershot, England and is also AWOL. Gives age as 20 so born 1866.
On marriage cert. says his parents are Mary Campbell & James Keenan and they are both deceased.
Re-joins Royal Scots Greys, 19 May, 1900, this time in Woolwich, London, and gives his age as 36, so born 1864.
Joins the Royal Garrison Artillery 22 March 1904 and gives his age as 40, so born 1864

Cheers
Bonnie

Pat Keenan, Ireland to USA, 1804

A Pat Keenan and Mary of Markethill, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, were passengers to the USA in 1804. They sailed on October 19, 1804, from the Port of Newry aboard the ship Ceres bound for New York. The ship's passenger list indicated that this Pat Keenan was thirty years of age and that Mary Keenan was twenty-four years of age. He was a farmer and she was a spinster.

I think that this Pat Keenan went to Maryland by 1808 and settled in Kentucky by 1817. Can anyone identify the ancestry of this Pat Keenan in Ireland or his lineage in the United States of America? I seek documented evidence of same or substantial leads which I can verify. I am also interested in learning what happened to the Mary Keenan who accompanied Pat Keenan to New York from Ireland. Should you have information concerning either of these two emigrants, I should enjoy having a message from you.

I have a website containing heaps of information about the Keenans who emigrated to Australia in the 1850s and 1860s from the Portglenone area in Northern Ireland. The main focus is on the Henry John Keenan and his wife Nancy (Ann) Jane Keenan (nee Gamble) (from Lislea, N I) who settled in the Batlow/Tumut region of New South Wales. There is plenty of information about their descendants and their siblings, including Stewart Keenan and his wife Isabella Keenan (Nee Gamble) who started a family in the Margaret River/Busselton region of Western Australia. There is also information about cousins in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Canada and the US. Go to www.thekeenans.id.au.

I have a George Keenan b. 1868 in PA. I believe that I have him in Philadelphia in the 1880 census on Rabbit Lane near Grays Avenye:
Parents: Michael 55, Annie 46 born in Ireland
Siblings: John, Francis, James, were born in New England and Henry, George & William in Pennsylavania.

And I am certain I have tracted him from 1900 in Upper Darby & East Lansdowne, Delaware County, PA. I am not certain if this was his firt marriage, but he married Annie Moran (widow of Jameas) about 1890 and raised her 7 Moran children and they had a daughter Cecelia together. Cecelia married Evan Morris and they lived in Yeadon, PA.

Please contact me if you are working on the same line of Keenans.

Thanks for reading -

Denise

Looking for info on James Keenan, 1777-1837, lived in West Nantmeal Twp, Chester Co, PA. To my knowledge, he married a Mary Sheneman and had the following children: Benjamin, Jacob, John, Joseph, Maria, & Phoebe. He had at least 5 other children, mostly boys and a few daughters, but I don't know their names. Does anyone have a list of their names and when they were born? I'm guessing their names might have been James, Edward, Catharine, Elizabeth, Rodger. If anyone knows for sure, let me know. I have an ancestor who could very well be James' descendent. I just don't possess enough info to verify it.

I'm trying to find the origins of my gg-grandmother, Mary Ann (Keenan) Livermore. All I have to go on is the information from her death certificate, her obituary and census records.

Mary DOB 13 Aug 1845 (Ireland, per census records and death certificate)
DOD 28 May 1932 (nursing home Syracuse, NY; resided there for 3 1/2 years)
Parents - Peter Keenan and Nellie Roach, both from Ireland
Husband - Alonzo Livermore - married c. 1863 - he died 1927
Children - Nellie, Adin (my g-grandfather), Edward

Only child to survive her was Adin. Mary, Alonzo and Edward are buried in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Waterville. The church burial records were not helpful with regard to Mary's town of origin. Mary's obituary lists two grandsons, Merton of Madison Center, NY and Milton of Stockwell, NY, and two granddaughters, Mary Tilbe (my grandmother) of North Brookfield, NY and Nellie Williams of Utica, NY.

If any of this sounds familiar to anyone, I would be interested in hearing from you.
HUGH KEENAN - Mobile, Alabama

From the Press-Register, Mobile, Alabama
Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Yesterday’s News - from 1857:

Sudden Death. - “Yesterday morning one of the sudden dispensations of Providence occurred which startle the mind, and call up its deepest, most serious reflections. Mr. HUGH KEENAN, who was employed in one of the upper cotton presses and also kept a small grocery store at the corner of Maine and Hamilton streets, had just returned home from market, when on going behind the counter he fell and almost instantly expired. The cause is supposed to have been an aneurysm of the heart.
“He was a member of Mechanics’ Fire Company, No. 7, and his funeral takes place this morning at 9 o’clock.”
Stewart was one of five sons born to Henry Keenan, wife unknown, maybe somebody can help me as Stewart was my great grandfather. I'm not sure but there may have been more siblings.Henry farmed ''Glenone'' as had his father and grandfather before him. Apparently the land was deeded to them by William of Orange.
Keenan DNA Study

Hey Fellow Researchers,

We are starting a Keenan DNA Study at www.relativegenetics.com. If you would like to pariticpate please contact me. If you would like to transfer your results from other laboratories please let me know.

Remember:

Most of the DNA in our bodies is termed ‘junk DNA’. It is non-coding (isn’t used for making proteins) and thus does not control medical function but is probably involved in genomic organization. Genetic genealogy only looks at the markers within junk DNA and thus the Y-DNA test cannot derive any medical information.

Thanks for your interest and I hope I hear from you.

Take care
Scott
skendall@kc.rr.com
Bridget Keenan - Martin Keenan- Michael Keenan

After a long break from researching this line - I've just discovered a reply to the message I left in 2000!.

Bridget's father was Michael and she had a brother Martin and a sister Mary. She married Thomas Corcoran in 1853 at St Patrick's church in Wigan. At some stage they moved to Hindley. Thomas and three of her children had died by
1858. From my research Bridget and her son Martin were both living in Hindley, Wigan, in 1861. She was still living in Hindley in 1891 but had died prior to the 1901 census.
Bridget's brother Martin was living in Hindley with his family in 1861. He had lived in Rochdale and Preston prior to that. By 1871 he was a widower living with Bridget who by this time had remarried. If you have any further info please contact me - I promise I won't wait another 7years before checking this message board. Look forward to hearing from you.
Mary Keenan in Cumberland

I'm looking for information on Mary Keenan who married Patrick McAvoy in Cumberland in 1866. She is listed on the census as being from Ireland, though I don't know where, or when she emigrated. Her father's name was Hugh Keenan, but I don't know whether he emigrated from Ireland too. Any information on either would be useful.
