Mitch-
Thank you for your quick response. If you were related to the Idaho Prof., you are related to me albeit distantly as the prof. is my uncle (my Dad's brother) Both men were avid fishermen. I always wanted to be able to play the piano, but my other interests took too much of my time. I really envy your grandfather his talent. My email address is: cs2663@gmail.com and I would appreciate any information you could give me. I will also pass on the information to Adeline's granddaughter, Lisa. Thanks.
Claudia

I have several pictures of Julius Kegel. He was a prominent furniture maker in Detroit. He had breathing problems which were due to illness in the Civil War. I also have his entire military file from the Civil War. I do have some information on Theresa Kaulfersch. I tried to locate her grave but she is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit in the German section. I would be happy to send you what I have. My uncle told me we were related to the Idaho professor an even gave me a book he authored. My grandfather Kegel was an only child and the family history wasn't handed down to well. My mother also is a big Hemingway fan, can fly fish and so your comment struck me. My grandfather could play anything on the piano and never took any lessons, as he could play be ear. Send me your snail mail I can get a packet out to you on the Kegels.

Mitch

I have posted before on your Kegel inquiries. I believe Paul Charles Kegel is my Great Grandfather. He died when my grandfather was quite young (about 5 or so). He was an artist, a very good one though not widely acclaimed. I believe my great grandfather was consciously left out of Julius' business because his stepmother wanted that to go to her children and Julius wanted to please his wife. Paul Charles left for Illinois when he was quite young and never looked back. My grandfather, Charles Kegel, was mostly raised by his mother and stepfather and knew little of the Kegel family, so when he returned to the Detroit area he decided to look them up. He took my father, who was then 12 years old with him. The person who opened the door would not let him in, but I know that my grandfather neither sought nor would have wanted any money from this family. He was an extremely proud man. My grandfather also had a sister, Adeline, who stayed in the Chicago area. My Dad, Jerome Kegel was Charles Herbert Kegel's oldest son. He was a registered professional mechanical engineer and designed many major conveyor systems for automotive companies (primarily GM) and also worked on the Titan II missle system. His only brother, Charles Herbert Kegel (named after his Dad) was a professor of English Literature and eventually became dean at Idaho State. He went to Idaho State rather than other choices because his hero was Ernest Hemingway and he wanted to live where he had lived. He had an IQ off the charts and a photographic memory, my Dad was not a slouch in that area either. Although their father was very intelligent and invented some things for Ford, I believe the genius both men possessed came mainly from my grandmother who also had a photographic memory. I would appreciate any pictures of Julius. I am hoping that someone may have pictures or any more information on Paul Charles Kegel's mother. I will also pass any information on to Adeline's(mentioned earlier) granddaughter so that she might have this addition to her research.

I recently made connections with the Duvernois side. There is an extensive web site on this family, which I am sure will help you. Simply Google search the name and it will come up. I can tell you that Adolph William born May 16, 1853 was at the marriage of Julius Kegel and Christine Pfeiffle in Detroit with his parents. I have several documents signed by Duvernois family members in the Civil War pension files of Julius Kegel, as they stated they were at the weddings of Julius' first wife and second wife.
I have Frederick William Duvernois born in 1820 in Wuertenberg (german province) and passing away in Detroit on Oct. 5, 1890. Hope this helps.

Well, other than Charles, I don't know those names, but I hope I am getting closer. Julius Kegel's first wife had a son, Paul Charles Kegel right after the Civil War. She then died and he was remarried about a year later in Detroit. Paul Charles Kegel then saw his step mom and real dad have about 8 more kids. I lose him after the 1880 census in Detroit. However, my uncle once said a Kegel relative was living to Idaho and he was given a communication college textbook from 1959 written by Charles Kegel who was said to be a "cousin." Another story from an email from a Kegel researcher was that when Julius died in the early 1900's, Paul came back to Detroit and was seen as someone trying to get money from the will and was given the cold shoulder by his half-brothers/sisters and they parted ways and he left Detroit for good. But, they did't have any other names, so I couldn't really link them to mine. There was a second Kegel family in Detroit that came over around 1880 or so. I don't know if they were relative or not of mine. So, I have been trying to run down Paul Charles Kegel's family (if any) for many years to find a link as Julius' had only two children who had families, William and Otto. Otto had two daughters who never had kids and William only had one son. I will store your data and see if I can get it to work. Thanks.

I have some Kegel family information that might help you. My family kept some written records but most of it was oral history passed down. My Grandmother's maiden name was Kegel. Her first name, Adeline. (She passed away in 1987) Her brother's name was Charles. Her father's name was also Charles and her mother's name, Augusta. Adeline married my grandfather, Sam Militell and they had one child, Ralph, who was my father. When my mom and dad were still alive they drove out to Pocatello, Idaho from Chicago (~1978-79?) to visit Charles Kegel and he gave my father a book that I believe was called "Out Fishing with Hemingway." I remember my mom and dad saying Charles was not in good health at the time of their visit and that he had a lady caretaker looking after him. My father was born in Chicago in 1921 but also lived a very short while in the Detroit area with Adeline. Both my grandfather, Sam, and my father, Ralph, served in the US military.

Thanks for responding! I know exactly who Helen and Julius are... it's exciting finding someone else who does too! Sorry it took another year for me to notice this... I rarely get around to the message boards!

I may have found Edward's (born 1864) parents last night, actually. I found some census records from Freeport, IL that has his parents listed as Joseph and Terase (seen as Therese in 1880). The only thing is that in 1865 they spelled it 'Kegle', in 1870 they spelled the name as 'Kagle' and in 1880 they spelled it 'Koegel'.

Rebecca Knaish (married Edward in 1887, also has son named Edward Lawrence) remarried Anthony Nampel after Edward died in 1895... just to update your records if you didn't know!

If you could get any more information from your mom and sister, that would be GREAT! It could really help with finding when Edward's parents came into the US.

Franz Kegel was actually my Great Grandfather Albert Kegel's Brother.I believe Franz came to the Detroit, Michigan with his 22 year old daughter Emma Kegel. Franz would have been 45 years old when he came to America from Calbe, Germany. His brother Otto Kegel from Detroit, Michigan did pay for him to come to America. I believe Franz went to Colville,Washington to visit my Great Grandfather. From there I have no information about Franz.

If you have any information on this person and his ancestors, please let me know. In 1923, Otto would have likely been living in the Washington state area. All of his brothers and sisters were born in the USA. I do know there was also a Kegel family that lived in California at the time, that don't appear to be my relatives.

Hi there,

I know this is a really old message, but I was doing an internet search for my great-great uncle Julius Kegel and came across this message board.

Helen Kegel Kloepping was my great-grandmother. I know my sister has done a lot with the genealogy of our family and I'm sure both she and my Mom probably know Edward's parents name. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure his mother's name was Rebecca Kneish Kegel. Not positive, but it sticks in my mind.

I know he died young in a boating/swimming accident, and his wife re-married.

If you're still interested in the info, I'd be happy to get it for you. Just post back here to let me know.

I have it in my computer and then could send you the newly compiled information. I do have a picture of Julius Kegel who was a Civil War veteran. I also have a lot of Kegel stuff, including passenger list data and grave photos, etc. So, Paul Charles Kegel was born on January 6, 1866 in Deroit. He isn't buried with the family in the Detroit Elmwood Cemetery. This has been a decade long mystery for me and I hope we do connect.

I posted about two weeks ago, but I can't seem to find it. I think we are related.
Julius Kegel married twice. The first wife was a Theresa Kaulferish (sp) in Detroit. They had one son, Paul Charles. Theresa then died and Julius married for a second time, to a woman named Christina Pfeiffle. This all took place during the Civil War era. The couple then had a bunch of kids, including William who is my connection. I have been unable to locate anything of Paul Charles Kegel after he 1880 census. However, my uncle, Tom Kegel, gave me a book from a profesor in Idaho who said this Kegel was an uncle or cousin to my grandfather. Please write back ASAP.
My maiden name is Kegel. My father's name was Jerome Charles Kegel and his brother's name was Charles Herbert Kegel (both deceased). They spent their early life in Chicago, Ill, later they moved to Detroit, Mi. My grandfather's name was also Charles Kegel. I don't know his father's name. I know he was an artist and at one time his works were in the Chicago Museum of Arts. He was ostracized from his family due to the fact that he was an artist, which was frowned upon in his era. When my grandfather returned to Michigan, he tried to see his grandmother, but was turned away as the family thought she might leave him money in her will. He never contacted or spoke with them again. My grandfather had only one sibling, a sister, named Adeline.

I know little about the family name or area of Germany they immigrated from. You can google my uncle Chuck. He had a photographic memory and had an IQ of about 200. He served most of his career at Idaho State(he loved Hemingway). My father was a registered professional engineer and earned the Distinguished Service Cross in WWII. I don't know if any of this helps you, but I would appreciate any information you might give me.

most of the kegel family was up near the east coast, my great-grandfather would be the well known Dr. Arnold Kegel a wellknown famous doctor. I further my information on the history of all Kegels, or atleast any who are linked to my family...and to my knowledge but if anyone has anything about the last name and history, much thanks and looking forward to hearing.

Tenn.listed are George H Cagle /Sarah/ children listed were Eliza /Esther (later Cross)Carnis (listed as male -actually female Cumi)later Mclaney/Isaac/Ballard(aka Benjamin ).
I find them listed in the ged com of Leonhart Kegel from a totally different countyin NC other than Mechlenburgh.
Were there boundry changes ?I have been unable to locate them in any of the 1840 NC county census.
These Cagles spread to Sullivan and Carter Counties in the span of 1860-1900 and brached as far away as Michigan to the present day .
I feel i have completed this family to the best of my abilities in the descendants but am hitting a wall on George H Cagle's ancestry.
