I am researching Jacob Kegley, son of John George Kegley and Catherine Hutsell. Jacob married Mary Coopenbarger and Mary and the children were found in the 1840 census of Blount Co., TN.

Joel Kegley ran a store on Mauk Ridge and that's how he collected his information for the journel. Most likely Austin and Rosa lived near to or frequent the store often. When a baby was born in the area they had to go to the store diaper material and a such, when someone died they went to the store to buy the casket hardware and lining and when someone got married they went to store to buy items to start up house keeping, so he was in the know. I also believe he was interested in genealogy and just didn't realize what an impact his journel would have in future generations.

Thanks, Anita!

It does clear up the question of Rosa's ancestry, although it still leaves me wondering why the family of Austin Clark and Rosa Kegley gets so much attention in the J. W. Kegley diary, with most of the births, deaths and marriages of their children being recorded. None of Joel's own cousins get that much attention.

Perhaps Austin Clark was just his best friend or something.

Rosa was the daughter of Micheal & Jenny Cox Kegley. All their younger children are scattered among family members in the 1900 Elliott Co. Census. Micheal was the s/o John Henry & Ann Myers Kegley so Rosa was a first cousin to Nanny. Rosa's brothers Micheal & Franklin were living with Nanny's brother Jake and her mother Malinda Jane. Rosa's brother George was living with their Uncle Samuel Kegley who married Elizabeth Catron. I don't know what happened to Micheal & Jenny but it seems I remember something about them dying but I don't remember for sure. I hope this helped.
Joseph & Nanny Kegley Skaggs' are my husband's great-grandparents. Nanny Kegley married first William D. Kegley (his 2nd marriage) and they had one child Daniel Kegley, when William D. died she later married Joseph Skaggs. I'm not sure of the relationship between Rosa & Nanny but I will go through my information and get back to you. Anita Skaggs

Rosa KEGLEY, wife of Austin K. CLARK of Elliott Co KY

Does anyone know who the parents were of Rosa Kegley, born according to the 1900 census on Jan 1888?

In that census, she was listed as "cousin" with the family of Joseph Skaggs and his wife Nannie Kegley:

1900 census of Elliott Co., Ky, Moccasin precinct, enumerated 16 June, lists on p. 7B as family #110/112:
Skaggs, Joseph, 37, b. Aug 1863, farmer; Nannie, wife, 34, b. Aug 1865, b. Ky Va Va, married 8 years, mother of 4 children, 4 living; Daniel, son, 12, b. Nov 1887; Willie, son, 7, b. Nov 1892; Henry, son, 5, b. Feb 1895; Ora, son, 2, b. Oct 1897; Kegley, Rosy, cousin, 12, b. Jan 1888, Ky Va Ky. All except Nannie and Rosy born Ky Ky Ky.

Nannie Kegley Skaggs (15 Aug 1865 - 5 Feb 1939) was the daughter of William Kegley (1834-1897) and Malinda Kinster (1836-1920.)

I have no relationship at all to this Kegley family.

I only got curious because Austin and Rosa and their children are mentioned frequently in the "J. W. Kegley diary", written by Joel W. Kegley, posted on the Elliott Co. KYGenWeb site (see http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kycarter/journals/Kegley_D...), suggesting that Joel and Rosa were closely related. That diary (really more of a ledger) is a useful resource for Elliott Co births and deaths in the early 1900's before official recording began.

Joel, born 28 July 1878 and died 30 Oct 1938, was the son of William G. Kegley (1853-1888) and Elizabeth Pennington (1852-1884).

Joel's father William G. Kegley was the son of Joel Kegley and Diannah Hounsell, and the grandson of Abraham Kegley and Rachel Leedy.

Nannie Kegley's father William Kegley was the son of John Henry Kegley. (I do not know who his parents were, but he was not a son of Abraham Kegley and Rachel Leedy.)

So any first or second cousin of Nannie Kegley would not be at all closely related to Joel Kegley, at least not on the Kegley side. The number of mentions of Austin and Rosa's family in the diary suggests that the relationship was quite close.

Joel Kegley and his siblings were raised by their grandmother Delilah (Hounsell) Kegley, since their mother died in 1884 and their father died in 1888.

I have speculated that perhaps Joel's father William G. Kegley remarried after Elizabeth (Pennington) Kegley died, and that Rosa is a daughter of this hypothetical second wife. If that second wife was a Skaggs, she could be a cousin of Joseph Skaggs on her mother's side, and a half-sister of Joel Kegley on her father's side. But that is all just a guess.

Neither Austin nor Rosa appear in the Kentucky death index, so most likely they moved out of state sometime after 1942 (their last mention in the J. W. Kegley diary.)

To my knowledge Christian and Catherine (LEEDY) KEGLEY never left Wythe County, Virginia and all fourteen of their children were born in Wythe County as well. My records indicate their daughter Rebecca married John COPENHAVER but my records indicate that they also remained in Wythe County. I have fourteen children listed for John and Rebecca including a daughter named Katherine who married Thomas Sterling CARDWELL of Texas. I have eight childrne for the CARDWELLS. Is this your Catherine? Please contact me directly at justpeachy@greenhills.net for further discussion.

Dianna in MO

Donna,

Just checked my family tree rather quickly, but I have Flora Belle Pennington (this is my sister-in-law's line) as a daughter of Rufus C. Pennington, 1860-?, and Virginia Flanagan, 1857-1942. Rufus was 39 in 1900 so the info that says he died in 1880 is wrong. Also on the family trees on Ancestry it gives Rufus' parents as Joseph Pennington Creger and Susan Mary Kinser, but I'm wondering why Rufus went by Pennington (that may have been his grandmother's maiden name if she was Jane Pennington) rather than Creger? From the 1900 census, the children of Rufus and Virginia Flanagan Pennington were: Susan, 18 in 1900; Florence E., 16; Floyd A., 13; Samuel C., 11; George W., 9; Flora Belle, 7; and Lucinda, 4.

Hello. Yes, these are the Kegleys I'm trying to gather more information on. I'm trying to find when and where James Marion and Narcissa died. Also, any other members of those generations. I have limited information on the family. I'm married to a great-grandson of James Marion. We live in Fredericktown, MO.
