Indiana Keilmans

If anyone is working on Keilman ancestry in northwest Indiana, Germany, or whatever the route between the two was, feel free to contact me. I'm a great-grandchild of Peter Keilman (son of John Jacob Keilman, son of Henry/Heinrich Keilman(n)), and while I have at least some information regarding Peter's children, grandchildren, and so on, his siblings, cousins, and so on are a mystery to me right now.

If my first impression of this forum is right, there are a lot of you "Keilfolk" out there that I don't know about yet, so I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Judy
My name is Sherry (Koss) Cole. I am tracing the Keilman Family Tree and saw you had traced it to the 1700. I was hoping you could provide me with the information you have to cross with mine.
I am the Granddaughter of Esther Keilman Koss. Her parents were Arthur and Martha (Beba) Keilman. Arthurs parents were Frederich H. and Otillie (Stoltefuhss) Keilman who came over from Germany in the 1880's with 3 children. They had a total of 15 children, 3 passed away prior to leaving Germany, 3 came over with them and the rest were born in the USA-Pennsylvania. Fred's parents were Wilhelm and Anna Catharina Voelkmann who lived in Bodelschwingh, Westfalen, Preussen, Germany.
I would appreciate any help you can provide me on this research. My email address is slc1965@verizon.net.
Thanks in advance.
Sherry

Alma was a sister of my grandfather, Henry Edward Keilman (1874-1959). We visited her in Dyer when I was a child. I have a photo of her. I, too, am researching information about the other siblings of Alma and Henry Edward. Also info about great grandparents, Philip Keilman (1847-1910) and his wife, Mary Barbara Scheidt (1855-1936).

Henry/Heinrich Keilmann

There is a Cook County marriage cert, dated the fourth day of February, 1878. that shows Henry Keilmann, of St John in the county of Lake, and state of Indiana....of the age of 50 years (thus born in 1828), and Miss Mary Leinir (sp?) of St John....of the age of 20 years (thus born in 1858). Certificate is signed by Father Giles Christoph of St Joseph's Catholic Church (located in Chicago). The last name of the bride is difficult to read, but in both places on the cert, there are 2 (i's) in her last name. The cert is available in the updated FamilySearch database of Cook County marriages. The Illinois State data base record lists a Henry Keilmount as groom, and Mary Leinir as the bride. The actual cert certainly looks like Keilmann to my eyes.

The book "Counties of Porter and Lake", under Biographical sketches, published in 1882, indicates Henry's birthdate as 13 Sep 1821. The book notes his three wives and goes on to note about the third "....he was a third time married, in February, 1879 to Mary Loehmer, of Cook County, Ill., born in 1857, to which union were born two children."

The other Henry/Heinrich Keilman(n)s, in St John in 1880 are not this one In 1870 the Henry's father is the only other Henry/Heinrich listed. Should the marriage cert have read 58 and not 50? Should the book read "......married February, 1878"; did it get her last name wrong or is the cert wrong, or? Could this be a different Henry?

Henry's marriage to any Mary is not listed in the Indiana marriages. He did have business interests in Chicago, so being married there could make sense. Mary's census data in 1900 and forward show her as being born in Illinois. Length of marriage and birth dates vary some, but circa 1858 seems good. Henry's birthdate seems consistent thru the census to be about 1821, not 1828.

I can find no Loehmers in Illinois or Indiana prior to 1880. No Leinirs either. There are Leinens in St John, Mary Leinen married Frank Charles Keilman. Another Mary Leinen married John Roeder.

And sooo, is the Henry on the marriage cert that same Henry that the book references? It seems to me that there are too many coincidences for it not to be, including the age difference between the bride and groom. On the other hand, I'm unsure.

Any help, opinions, guesses, clues, would be welcome

My mother (Marie Keilman) b. 1899 d. 1977, was born in St. Johns, Indiana. Her siblings were Henry M., Lawrence B., Clara, Leo, Wilhelmina, Ferdanand F., Anne, and Fred. I have some information regarding their children but did not notice a Phillip. I also have info on my mothers ancestors back to Phillip Keilman b. 1828 in Bierstardt, Germany.

I have a Philip Keilman living in Hazleton, PA, born in 1864, with parents Lewis and Martha C. Keilman. Is this your relation? This Philip had a sister Mary Margareth who married my relation Conrad Fisher, but Mary died at age 32. I found an early newspaper account that listed the name as 'Keileman' so all of my postings on my Rootsweb tree go by that name. Please respond if any of this sounds familiar.

Hello! I have a Lewis Keileman from Hazleton. Lewis and Ludwig make sense, and I already posted another reply about Philip Keilman. If this is the correct person, Ludwig had a daughter Mary Margareth, who married my relation Conrad Fisher, yet died early at age 32. Do you know anything about her? I got the (incorrect) spelling of Keileman from a newspaper account, so my Rootsweb tree has all of my info under that spelling with the extra 'e'. Look there for anything that I can help you with.

Hello all,

My name is Robert Keilman, from Lake County Indiana. I don't know much about my family line and was hoping someone could possibly help me. My father's name is Robert Thomas Keilman and my grandfather's name is Robert Walter Keilman. That's as far as I know. The remaining Keilman's of my bloodline live in Hammond, Indiana.

I'm not sure if you all could help me with the information I gave you, but I figured one of you may cross my genealogy path while doing your own family trees.
