Re: Betsy Kells born 1875 Barrow England

Phoebe,
Your great-grandmother, Mary Jane Kells, was born on 23 April 1847 at Knockateggal, County Fermanagh [about 3 miles north of Ballyconnell, County Cavan]. Jane married George Benjamin of Gortaree, County Fermanagh, on the 8th January 1868 in Tomregan Parish Church, Ballyconnell, County Cavan.

Mary Jane had a brother, William Henry Kells, who was born on 10 February 1845 at Knockateggal. He moved to England prior to 1871 and there he married Matilda Birkett on 5 November 1872; Matilda was born on 12 March 1855. William died on 20 January 1920 and Matilda died on 9 August 1931. At the time of the 1881 Census they lived at 26 Raglan Street, Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire. They had 4 daughters and 7 sons, including Elizabeth (Betsy) Kells who was born on 12 April 1875 in Barrow-in-Furness and died on 5 January 1927. She married George Henry Gabriel in 1896 in St. Luke’s Parish Church, Barrow-in-Furness, and they had 4 daughters and 9 sons.

Mary Jane’s parents, your great-great-grandparents, were Edward Kells, who was born about 1821 at Cavanagh, County Cavan, and Margaret Emo, who was born about 1817. They were married about 1838 and lived at Knockateggal, County Fermanagh. Edward died sometime before 1862 and Margaret died on 21st November 1892 in Lisnaskea Workhouse. Edward and Margaret had 3 daughters and 4 sons.

Edward’s parents, your great-great-great-grandparents, were Robert Kells [3], who was born about 1788, and his wife, Mary McAllister. They lived in on Main Street, Ballyconnell, where Robert was a shoemaker. Robert and Mary had a large family of whom only 2 daughters and 5 sons have been identified.

Robert’s parents, your great-great-great-great-grandparents, were Robert Kells [2], who was born about 1757, and his wife, Margaret Wood (born about 1761) of Ardue (Ardew), County Cavan. Robert farmed at Bofealon (Buffalen), County Cavan, and also, from time to time, worked as a shoemaker in Ballyconnell, County Cavan. Robert died about 1834, aged 77 years. Robert and Margaret had 3 daughters and 8 sons.

Robert’s parents, your great-great-great-great-great-grandparents, were Robert Kells [1], who was born in Northumberland on 3 March 1699, and his wife, Elizabeth Lawrence who was born about 1711. Reputedly Robert was ordained as a priest in the Anglican (Established) Church and ministered for a while in Scotland. Robert came to Ireland in the 1730s and settled in the parish of Templeport, near Ballyconnell. Robert had the tenancy (title interest) of 81 acres in the townland of Killynaff, County Cavan, and of lands in the townlands of Bofealan (Buffalen) and Urhannagh (Urnaugh), also in County Cavan. He lived in Bofealan and died there on 4 April 1805, aged 106 years, and was buried in Templeport Parish Churchyard, County Cavan. Robert and Elizabeth had at least 3 daughters and 6 sons.

Robert Kells [1] was my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather; Robert Kells [2] was my great-great-great-great-grandfather; and Robert Kells [3] was my great-great-great-grandfather.

I have no information about the descendants of Mary Jane Kells and George Benjamin and would greatly appreciate any information you could provide me about their descendants (including yourself).

Best wishes,
Trevor McClean.
Hi Rod,
I have just come across this thread now since I have only recently started to research the Kells side of our family. Do you have any information on the Canadian Kells? Our branch ultimately settled in Cavan Township, Durham County, Ontario, Canada. Also last week I came across a grave in St James' Cemetery in Toronto of Frances Kells from Templeport Parish, Cavan, the location you mentioned in your post. You also mentioned a family tree you had put together. If it is still available, I would appreciate it if you could send me a copy.
Lorna Wright

Could I be so bold as to also request a copy of your 25 page family tree. I have only recently taken up research on my Australian family ancestors and the early indications are that our linage tracks back to Ballyconnell ? I will be happy to pay for any expenses incurred.
Best regards
Robert (Bob)

Hi Trevor,
David married Letica noble (burried in Killashandra Presbiterian church) who was my great great grandaunt. They all lived in Derryland Killashandra Co Cavan. The reason there are so many Noble`s in the border counties is because before the north/south devide it was all Ulster as it still is.My relatives had very large families back in the 1800`s I can ask Bazil what the link is if any to Nancy I can see him over the weekend
Also heard that there was Noble-Kells named in the Book of Kells but have`nt confirmed that yet
I will let you know what I find
Nigel
Thanks. Yes, I am aware of Basil. His great-grandfather was David Kells (1831-1899) who married Leticia/Sophie Noble. I am not aware of any familial link between Leticia/Sophie Noble and Nancy Noble, however, “Noble” is quite a common surname in the Border counties of Ireland. Basil’s great-great-great-great-grandfather was Robert Kells (1699-1805).

I know this is a late reply, and it's a long shot. My Gr grandfather was Richard Kells, age 18, born in Ireland, married Margaret Wilson in Ontario, Canada in 1862. He stated as his parents, William and Margaret Kells. I have had no luck tracing him back to Ireland (although there is lots of info on Kells that immigrated to Canada). However, my grandfather's name was Francis John Kells, so wondered about them passing the name on. Haven't been able to trace him to the Ballyconnell or Fermanagh Kells, so wondered about the possibility of Clones.

Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.

Hi, My name is Martin and I was looking for information re the parents of Edward and his brother Jacob who farmed at Drummany Glebe. Edward was my Great Grandfather and his son Henry was my Grand father. I have details on both Henry and alot of my grand uncles, also on a Henry Kells DMP of wood Key killed on duty in 1920 (Service Records) he was born around 1878, not sure who his parents were. I think Trevor mentioned that a George Kells was also in the DMP, was he the son of Edward born 1895.
I have A history of Kells family published 1935 by Robert Kells. He sent me a copy he had left. Iwill go through it later as I am trying to write a research paper, but it has many items in it and I may find something for you. Has anyone been to Ireland, Cavan Co.? My great aunt corresponds with family members there. I will get names and addresses of relations there.
Kim (Johnson, Hersey, Kells)

The first two children you mention, Henry and Bertha, are from his first wife, Martha. Margaret was his oldest child with Isabella.
Wendy Negley
Roger,

The following may be of some interest:

[1] I am aware of 2x George Kells who served in the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and another who served in the Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP), namely:
[i] George Kells, RIC Registered Number 26295, ie joined c1860, therefore born before 1841. I have no other information about him.
[ii] George Kells, RIC Registered Number 38875. He was my g-grandfather (1854-1929) and was not the father of Olive MCG Kells.
[iii] George Kells, DMP Registered Number 11464, who was born in 1894 in Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire), Co. Dublin, ie much too young to be relevant to your family.

[2] I am aware of 2 family lines of “Cavan/Fermanagh” Kells who have a strong association with Lancashire.
[i] Edward [1821-1860] and Margaret [1817-1892] Kells (née Emo) of Cavanagh, Co. Cavan, and later Knockateggal, Co. Fermanagh, had 3 daughters and 4 sons. The family worshipped in Tomregan Parish Church, Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan. Two of their sons (William Henry & Aaron) and a daughter (Isabella) moved permanently to Lancashire, England, mainly the Barrow-in-Furness area; many of their descendants still live in Lancashire. Further 2 other sons (John Robert & George) also moved to Barrow-in-Furness area for a while but later returned permanently to the Ballyconnell area of Co. Cavan. It may not be relevant but George (1849-1897) and his wife Eliza (1856-1931) Kells (née Albert) had 6 daughters and 3 sons, including a daughter called Matilda Kells who was born on the 9th November 1880. However, to the best of my knowledge, George worked as a labourer and had never served as a policeman in Ireland. I have no other information on Matilda but it is entirely feasible that she might have gone to England and stayed, at least initially, with her relations in Lancashire.
[ii] Elliot (1815-1885) and Louise (1819-1906) Kells (née Brown) of Scrabby, Co. Cavan, had a daughter and at least 3 sons. One of the sons (Henry) moved permanently to St. Helens, Lancashire; his descendants still live in Lancashire. Another son (William) moved to St. Helens for a while and later returned to farm at Scrabby. However, there was no relevant George or Olive/Matilda in this family.

Trevor McClean

Hi Roger,

I think I found George Kells death entry in the Index of Irish Civil Registration Death Records. It was October - December, 1897 and he was 47 years old, born ca 1850. He was born before civil registration of births started in Ireland in 1864.

If your request the civil death record from the General Register Office here in Ireland http://www.groireland.ie and click on "apply for cert" it will give you exactly where he died in County Cavan, his residence at the time of his death as well as the informant for the death which was usually a family member.

He may have died in the same location where he was born in County Cavan. You would need to check with the local church wherever he died in Cavan to find out if the church parish registers survive for his birth location and if so how you can get a copy of his baptismal record.

You have two records of Walter and Olive's marriage? Which is the official one, in other words, which one is from the England General Register Office?

Have you ordered Walter and Olive's marriage record from
the England General Register Office http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

I always recommend getting the real records, the original records for your ancestors.

If Olive's father was a policeman in Ireland at that time he would have been a member of the RIC known as the Royal Irish Constabulary. The records of the Royal Irish Constabulary are held at the England Archives in Kew. If you live in England and are close enough to visit Kew it might be easier for you to search his records there.

If you're not near Kew, microfilm copies of the RIC records are held in Northern Ireland at the PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland Museum) and you can request them to search the microfilms for George's police service records, here's the link with contact information:

http://www.psni.police.uk/index/about-us/police_museum/museu...

I think the George I gave you the link to in County Cavan in the 1911 Ireland census might be Olive's grandfather, eg. her father George's father. He died in 1921 and was born in 1828. He died in the October-December, 1921 and you can order his civil death cert from the General Register Office in Ireland http://www.groireland.ie

I think you should order the Fannie Olivia Kells birth cert from the Ireland General Register Office which I gave you the index information about in my previous message. That's the only civil birth record for an Olivia Kells and I think she's "yours".

The Uprising was in 1916 (Easter Monday it began) so it wouldn't have caused them to leave Cavan and go to Belfast in 1910. I can't find them in the 1911 Ireland census (which is online) either in Cavan or Belfast or anywhere else, here's the link so you can search as well:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Have you searched the 1911 England census for them?

I also looked for a death record entry for Olive as Olive Hollinrake in Belfast, Co. Antrim but didn't find any death record entry for her in the Ireland civil registration death records index.

Regards.

Eilis O'Hara

HELLO, I HAVE GOT THE ORIGINAL MARRIAGE OF WALTER HOLLINRAKE AND OLIVE KELLS UP ON ANCESTRY.CO.UK. IT STATES THEY WERE MARRIED 4TH DEC. 1900, AND WALTER WAS 26, AND OLIVE WAS 18, HE WAS BORN IN ENGLAND AND SHE WAS BORN IN IRELAND. ALSO OLIVES FATHER WAS DECEASED AND WAS INDEED A POLICEMAN. I HAVE ALSO HAD IT CONFIRMED A YEAR OR SO LATER THEY WERE RUNNING THE POST OFFICE IN BALLYCONNEL, BUT DUE TO THE UPRISING THEY LEFT AND WENT TO BELFAST AROUND 1910, SHORTLY AFTER THEY ARRIVED OLIVE DIED IN BELFAST. THANKS FOR TAKING TIME OUT TO HELP ME, ALL THE VERY BEST. ROGER.H

There's an entry in the Irish civil registration birth records index for Fanny Olivia Kells born in the April - June quarter 1882 in County Cavan, I recommend that you request the civil birth cert from the Ireland General Register Office to get the detail from the actual birth cert. It's the only civil birth entry for an Olive/Olivia Kells in County Cavan in the index.

The actual birth cert will give you her mother's given and maiden name as well as her father's occupation when she was born in addition to her specific birth location in County Cavan, here's the link to the Ireland General Register Office so you can request her birth cert:

http://www.groireland.ie and click on "apply for cert"

Was Olive born in Ireland and then did she emigrate to England? Did she emigrate by herself or did her parents emigrate with her? How old was she when she married? and have you looked for a civil birth record for her?

There's only one George Kells in the 1911 County Cavan census who might be Olive's father but he's listed as a farmer not a policeman and he's a widower.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?sur...

There are no Hollinrakes listed in the 1911 Ireland census in County Cavan or any other county in Ireland. Have you confirmed through the Royal Mail records that they ran the Post Office in Ballyconnell? At that time the Royal Mail was the mail service in Ireland.

Hey John,
Assuming you are my cousin. I would like to find out the family tree info that you have for the Kells family. I have information on Bertha Ingison Kells going back to Sweden if you need it. Do you have mom's email?

Russell,

As far as I am aware there is no direct family link between your Kells family line and that of Hewitt Kells.

I believe that your grandfather was John (Jack) Michael Kells who was born on the 9th January 1904 at Leongatha, Victoria, and died on the 23rd September 2002. Jack’s grandfather was Thomas McAllister Kells (c1829 – 1910) who was born in Ballyconnell, County Cavan, Ireland. Thomas emigrated to Australia in 1857.

Jack married Rose O’Brien (1901 - 1969) and I understand that they had 7 daughters and 6 sons. However, I don’t know which of the sons (viz. Stanley J., John M., Dennis P., Terrence R., Brian W. and Shane B.) was your father.

Trevor McClean
I have never heard of Hewitt Kells, but my grandfather was John Michael Kells. There maybe some link to Hewitt Kells being that my Grandfather was born and died in Australia.
Hope this helps.

Thank you, but sadly no. I have since found out that James Oliver Kells b.1857 or 1859 was a career soldier most likely in the Calvary. I know that he divorced Helen S. Leigh probably in 1891 or 1892, after the birth of his daughter, Margaret and continued reenlisting and ending up in Alaska. He was possibly buried in Washington State, but I only have family stories on that. I know his mother's name was Margaret and he had brothers William, and Frank, and a sister, Ellen all coming from the Orange county of New York.

James Kells could be the father of my father, James Wilson Kells, who was born in 1881 and had a sister Mary living at 110 Castlereagh Road in 1925. I know that James Wilson Kells had at least one brother, Robert, and perhaps more including a David Wesley Kells and another sister Elizabeth.

Owen,

Does the following "ring a bell" with you?

Edward Kells who was born about 1853 and married Margaret Karyn Kells [his first cousin, a daughter of Isaac Kells of Cavanagh, County Cavan and born about 1859] on the 17th August 1880 in Tomregan Parish Church, Ballyconnell, County Cavan. Edward and his brother, Jacob, farmed at Drummany Glebe. Edward moved away from the district in the late 1880s and lived in Westmeath and Wicklow for a while before moving to Kingstown [Dun Laoghaire] where he worked for some time with Wallace Coals. He built a vegetable shop in Kingstown and his family ran it for many years. Later Edward went into the building trade as a contractor and owned a building providers/yard at Cumberland Street, Dun Laoghaire. At the time of the 1911 Census the family lived at 8 Cumberland Street, Kingstown. He died in 1925 and Margaret died in 1933; both were buried in Deansgrange Cemetery, Monkstown, County Dublin. Edward and Margaret had a daughter and 7 sons, including:

* John (Jack) James Kells who was born on the 16th April 1881 in County Cavan. He was married twice. He first married Catherine (Kate) Ferguson (1881 – 1933). Jack worked as a plumber for several years. At the time of the 1911 Census the family lived at 5 Trafalgar Lane, Blackrock, County Dublin. After his father’s death Jack took over the family business. Jack and Kate had 2 daughters and 3 sons, and Jack had a further daughter and 2 sons by his second marriage. His children included:

** Brian Kells [a son of Jack’s second marriage].

Many Kells came from County Cavan Ireland. One branch went to North America while the other went to New Zealand and Australia. There is some evidence that the Kellses were Waldenses from Piedmont Italy who fled the Catholics to the UK and ended up in Ireland via Scotland and perhaps England.

I just pulled out all my info. I am stuck on my great great grandfather John Kells. I know he lived in Cook county Illinios. I have two census papers with his info on them. He married Addie Kirkwood and had a son Norris. I know census data is not great but all I know is that I think he died somewhere between 1920 and 1930 since in 1930 Addie is listed as living with her son and there is no mention of John. On the census John lists his birthplace as both NY and Ireland so I am not sure which to trust. Any info on this line? Poss DOB for John is 1862 but I also have 1875 listed on another census.
