Alan, I am trying to find information concerning a Nickolas Kemp who turns up in a land record from 1762 in Frederick County, Maryland, USA. He came indentured to the colony and purchased land in 1762. We are trying to trace him back to Scotland. Do you have any records for a Nickolas Kemp in Airth & Lambert, Scotland prior to 1750? Thank you for your help.
MaryAnne Kemp Anderson

I was in their class when I was in the 5th grade (1973-74?). Many years later she tried to get a hold of me, but I foolishly never tried to contact her. Now I really regret my choice.

I have other names in that period.
The booklet by Anne Roper is available on Abe Books website at £3 “THE CHURCH OF SAINT CLEMENT, OLD ROMNEY”.
Recently discovered that my gg-grandmother was Lucy Kemp, born in Virginia perhaps 1840 (+- 5yrs) or so. She was Black, perhaps Mulatto. She was married to William Woodson, also of Virginia. He was Black, perhaps Mulatto. Not sure if she was free before Emanicipaton. Please check any wills or tax docs for a "Lucy" owned by a Kemp. (Her son, my g-grandfather was Hicks Woodson (1860-1911).Thank you!

Thanks for that David. The reference to a rector came from another researcher, but I think it was possibly a whim on his part, and had not checked it out myself so wasn't relying on it. I haven't seen Anne Roper's list, very useful. I had a note of the William as a possible father (using name patterns he is a likely candidate) and assume you meant 1590 for the John you mention.
Mary

I remember now, and I have just checked the old messages. Yes I have used British History online – time consuming but informative.
I hadn’t appreciated that a Dowle had been a rector at Old Romney. I have a list of Rectors in the Church of Old Romney booklet by Anne Roper and it doesn’t mention a Dowle. I was aware of a William born c.1592 as a possible father to James, but there is another contender, John born 1690.
Thanks for your message David. I think we have been in contact before, via Genes Reunited. My husband is descended from William via his other wife, and daughter Dorothy. I did a lot of reading on the Mantel/Mauntell line and backwards more than a year agolast - an interesting lot aren't they? Do you ever use British History online, with access to material that is being uploaded from National Archive? I found a lot of manorial information in Northampton using that and documents relating to the Dacre trial and executions. I've been doing a degree so haven't had time for family research, and as yet I haven't transferred my data to this computer so can't look up any references. I suspect you have all that though as from memory you are very thorough. Do you think there will ever be a chance of linking James as a son of William Dowle the rector at Old Romney?

Actually I was quite surprised to find such a close kinship. But it would have never happened without a ydna test. If there is any way you can get someone of the surname Kemp in your family,KNOWN KIN, to do a ydna test, we will know more. Unfortunately at this point in time, I know little or nothing about how the connection came about. The first place I find my Kemp line is in VA in the early 1800s, so that can't help you. The match we found only knows from 1850, so we are still searching for the connection with him.
Lolene

PS We used ftdna (Family Tree DNA,)not connected to ancestry.

I spoke to him few years back and we didn't have connections but looking online today, I now see he has that info...but he didn't have anything new on Sidney either. I did find in another tree they had his birth listed in South Bright (Sp right?) Bahamas....

Hi Patty!

I'm so pleased you responded! I'm on the Murphy side. My great grandmother (Ella Placida Kemp) married Frank B. Murphy. They had 3 children: John Kemp Murphy, Gertrude, & Katherine (who was called Kay). John Kemp Murphy was my grandfather. Have you been able to find much information on the Kemp family?

Joseph Wesley Kemp (1917-2008)

I'm very new to all this, so please bare with me. :) I am looking for more information regarding Joseph Wesley "Wes" Kemp, born in Port Huron, Michigan in 1917 and passed away in Santa Maria, California in 2008. He was the second husband of my great grandmother, Virginia Ellen Thurmond (1918-2000).

While not a direct blood connection, he was married to my great grandmother for many years and the few times I met him he was a very pleasant man. Ancestry only shows one other member with him in their tree, at least publicly I assume, so I'm hoping to get more concrete information. Just for reference purposes though, that person's tree shows his parents to be Roy Robertson Kemp (1878-1936) and Evyline Corbett (1887-1918), though I am unsure if this is accurate.

Any insight is much appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)

Day, who was born around 1875.
There are three children I am aware of: Johnis Kemp (b. 1903), Nora Kemp (b. 1905) and my ancestor Samuel Lee Kemp (b. 1908 in Maryland, died Feb 12, 1962 in Silver Spring).

Samuel Lee Kemp married Rosie May Ennis (1913-1976) and had six children (Joseph L., Robert E., Roland B., Stanley E., William R., Samuel E., and Margaret L.).

As far as I know the family stayed in Maryland, though I don't know anything before W Edward Kemp, and that is mainly what I am looking for. Where he came from? Or at least parents' names. I've been unsuccessful in finding him in census records.

Hi, Kyle,

Sorry to be tardy in my response - am having shoulder problems, so limited typing for a while.

Long story short, I am trying to relate the SC Kemps to my TN Kemps. I believe that my Root node - Richard Kemp, born around 1720 - was a sibling to or the son of a sibling to or a sibling of the father of Moses Kemp born 1749 who founded the SC Kemp dynasty. This is my current area of research and a brick wall, but in the meantime, I am doing some research on the SC Kemps of this line. Edgar is a direct descendant of Moses.

I'll send you privately my updated notes on Edgar.

Gary

Re: Henry Kemp Line of Wake Co, NC???
Just received but have not yet digested this data. Bill Kemp and I share a common great-great-grandfather in James Riley Kemp (16 Aug. 1845 – 26 Nov. 1916), though only Bill is a direct line male descendant. Accordingly, we do our Kemp DNA tracing using Bill's DNA.

Gary Pace & Bill Kemp

A Y-DNA25 match has been found between kit 200693, Billy Kenneth Kemp, and another person(s) in the Family Tree DNA database.

Our help pages have the answers to questions about Y-chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) matches.
http://www.familytreedna.com/faq/answers/9.aspx

Follow the link below to access your myFTDNA account.
Your Kit Number is 200693
http://www.familytreedna.com/login.aspx

Our Kemp Line is

Richard Kemp (~1715 - ?), married ~ 1735, is mentioned in the Johnston Co., NC, deed books as father of Henry Kemp.

Henry B. Kemp (1743 – 1818) married Dinah (? - ?). He was born in Queen Annes Co., MD (?), and migrated with his father Richard to Johnston Co., NC. After Wake County was created from Johnston, Cumberland and Orange Counties. Henry, in 1806, migrated from Wake Co., NC, to Wilson Co., TN, and then later to the Defeated Creek area of Smith Co., TN. Some sources have the migration beginning from Granville Co., NC, which was just north of Wake Co., NC.

Suspect Burrell Jr’s father was Murphy Kemp, but it could have been Murphy’s brother Burrell Kemp Sr.

Burrell P. Kemp Sr. (~1771 – 1 Sep. 1826/1827) was born in NC/VA and married Nancy Foster/Fauster (1765/1775 – ~1835) [1830 USC/MIL] on 15 Dec. 1791, in Wake Co., NC. Their children included:

William Murphy Kemp (21 March 1770 – 1851/1860) [1820 USC] [1830 USC] [1840 USC] [1850 USC]. Born in Granville Co., NC, and married Sarah See (22 Apr. 1775 - ?); died in Smith Co., TN. They had ten children:

Burrell P. Kemp Jr. (7 Apr. 1794 - 1883) [1840 USC] [1850 USC] [1860 USC] [1870 USC] [1880 USC] married Elizabeth Jane Smith Roveling/Rawlings/Rowlings/Romling/Romeling (1795/1796 – 1870/1880) [1850 USC] [1860 USC] [1870 USC] on 3 Nov. 1813 in Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee. By 1814 they were living in Old Kemp Hollow #1, on Peyton's creek, near Monoville, Smith Co., TN, on a land grant from NC in Indian Territory. Burrell was a farmer, both Burrell and Elizabeth were literate (?). They had nine children, among them a son Larkin, born 1822/1824. After Elizabeth’s demise in the early 1870s, Burrell Jr. married Jane Russell (~1828 - ?) [1880 USC] on 27 Sep. 1874 [SCTMR]; there were no issue from this union.

Larkin Kemp (16 Sep. 1822 – 24 Aug. 1909) [LDVT] [LDVHK] [birth-LKB] [1850 USC] [1860 USC] [1870 USC] [1880 USC/MTN] was born in Old Kemp’s Hollow #1 and raised in Smith County, Tennessee. It is thought the Kemps emigrated from England. He was a farmer and a successful miller and pioneer operator of water-driven mills in central Tennessee. He first had corn meal and wheat flour mills on Payton's Creek in Smith County, then mills in Macon County, Tennessee, after he migrated. Larkin married Ann McClain Sutton (9 Oct. 1825 – 6 Nov. 1906) [LDVT] [LDVHK] [birth-LKB] [BDVFB] [1850 USC] [1860 USC] [1870 USC] [1880 USC/MTN], daughter of James S. and Mary Franklin Cornwell Sutton Jr., 17 Oct. 1844 [LKB] in Smith Co., TN, and to this union were born nine children. (Ann McClain Sutton was sister to Jesse Kemp’s wife, Elizabeth (Betsy) Crown Sutton, and to Asa Kemp’s second wife, Manerva Jane Sutton Brooks.) The spelling of “McClain” is as recorded in Larkin Kemp’s bible and in an old Sutton bible in the possession of Larry Kemp 2004. [NOTE: Some family records give Larkin’s DoD as 16 Aug. 1909.] Born in TN, Larkin and Ann died in Macon Co., TN and are interred in the Smalling-Adams Cemetery in Lafayette, Macon Co., TN.

James Riley (Riley) Kemp (16 Aug. 1845 – 26 Nov. 1916) [LDVT] [LDVHK] [birth-LKB] [BDVFB] [1850 USC] [1860 USC] [1870 USC] married Manerva/Manetta (Mary) Frances Brockett (2 July 1850 – 17 June 1879) [1870 USC], daughter of Benjamin Franklin (Frank) and Louise Goad Brockett, on 28 Oct. 1869 [SCTMR] [LKB]. Upon her demise, he wed her caregiver, Ellen Dora (Eldora) Sloan (16 Feb. 1860 – 22 Aug. 1942) [LDVT] [LDVHK] [1860 USC] [1870 USC] [1880 USC] [1900 USC], daughter of John Milton and Nancy Parkhurst Sloan, granddaughter of Jason R. Sloan, great-granddaughter of John Sloan, on 3 July 1879 [SCTMR]. Per their STCDs, Riley died of “valvular disease of the heart” complicated by chronic cystitis and Eldora of Angina. Riley and Eldora are buried in the Sanderson Cemetery on Sanderson Branch Road, Pleasant Shade, Smith Co., TN.

Riley’s family included two sons who are the roots of Bill Kemp’s and Gary Pace’s trees

Bill Kemp’s branch begins here:

Rufus Jefferson (Jeff)	Kemp (6 Mar. 1881 – 14 Oct. 1962) [LDVT] [1880 USC] [1920 USC] [1930 USC] (SSN 408-64-7088, age 76) married Susan (Susie) Beasley (25 Sep. 1887 – 29 Jun. 1937) [LDVT] [1920 USC] [1930 USC], daughter of Henry and Sarah Alice (Alice) Taylor Beasley, on 16 Oct. 1904 [SCTMR] [Kemp Bible]. [NOTE: Some family records have Susie’s DoB as 25 Sep. 1886.] Jeff and Susie produced two sons and a daughter:

Curtis Draper Kemp (30 Mar. 1911 – 18 Feb. 1966) [LDVT] [LDVSS] [1930 USC], born and died in Pleasant Shade, Smith Co., TN, who married Dorothy Mai Hackett (16 Mar. 1913 – 24 Feb. 2005) [BDVT] [LDVSS] [LDCO] [1930 USC], born in Pleasant Shade, Smith Co., TN, daughter of Hugh West and Myrtle Arthenia Sanderson Hackett, on 2 June 1929 [MDCO] in Riddleton, Smith Co., TN. They were married by Squire W. S. Payne, J.P. Curtis, a share-cropper on Rufus Jefferson Kemp’s farm, died at age 55 from a stroke and, per son Bill, “the stress and tribulations trying to feed and clothe a large, growing family.” He was a dairy and tobacco farmer and a carpenter. Life on the farm was hard with work beginning before sunup and continuing until dark – probably the usual way of life on a farm. Dorothy worked at the Carthage Shirt Company from 1955 until her retirement in 1991. They are buried in Sanderson’s Cemetery. Curtis and Dorothy had 11 children.

Curtis Draper Kemp is related to the Murphy Kemp, pere, line by blood and by marriage. He married Dorothy Mai Hackett, her father being Hugh West Hackett, son of Levi Washington Hackett. Levi married Permelia Elizabeth "Lizzie" Kemp, youngest child of John Wilson Kemp, a son of Murphy Kemp, pere. Curtis Draper Kemp himself was son of Rufus Jefferson Kemp, R. J. or "Jeff" Kemp being a son of James Riley Kemp. "Riley" was a son of Larkin Kemp and Larkin was a son of (we believe) Burrell Kemp, Jr. Burrell Kemp, Jr. was a son of Murphy Kemp, pere.

Billy Kenneth Kemp	(1931 – ?), born in Pleasant Shade, Smith Co., TN, married Jimmie Sue (Sue) Walker (1934 - ?), the daughter of Robert Alford and Chauncie Louise Reynolds Walker & stepdaughter of Donald Matthew Thomas, 1953 in Alexandria, DeKalb Co., TN. They had one child and reside in Martinez, GA.

Gary Pace’s branch begins here:

James Marshall (Marshall) Kemp (8 Oct. 1873 – 1 Oct. 1967) [LDVSS] [1880 USC] [1900 USC] [1910 USC] [1930 USC/LAL] married Ferbia/Phaerby (Ferbie/Furbie) Jane Mathews (1 Nov. 1876 – 31 Oct. 1951) [1880 USC] [1900 USC] [1910 USC] [1930 USC/LAL], daughter of John M. (Doc) Mathews and his second wife Mary A.Brown, on 13 Dec. 1894 [SCTMR]. [NOTE: Some family histories give Ferbie’s DoB as 1 Nov. 1877.] James and Ferbie were born in Smith Co., TN, where they raised all but one of their children, and relocated to the Athens, Alabama, area in 1913. After Ferbie’s death, Marshall married Zadie Unknown (Miss Zadie), who was a good wife to him and got along well with his children. James and Ferbie are laid to rest at Athens, Limestone Co., AL.

Marcellus (Cellus) Kemp (8 Oct. 1895 – 27 Dec. 1992) [1900 USC] [1910 USC] [1920 USC/SOH] [1930 USC/SOH], born in Monoville, Smith Co., TN, married Amy Hodges (26 Apr. 1897 – 31 Dec. 1998) [1930 USC/SOH] [LDVSS] of South Carthage, daughter of David Peterson and Sallie Payne Hodges, on 9 June 1920 in Carthage, Smith Co., TN, and resided in Akron, Summit Co., OH, where Cellus was a foreman with B.F. Goodrich Co. Their daughter was Marcella Latelle. Marcellus and Amy are interred in Rosehill Memorial Park, Summit County, Akron, Ohio.

Marcella Latelle Kemp (1921 - ) [1930 USC/SOH], born in South Carthage, TN, married Henry (Hank) Alexander Pace (7 Mar. 1914 – 9 Sep. 2000) [LDVSS], son of Alexander and Anna Shatkowski Pacevitz, 1945 in Akron, OH.

Their eldest son was:

Gary James Pace	(1946 - ) married Susan (Sue) Ann Quickstad (1947 - ) 1972.
