Jack Kenney, Il>CA Died 3/25/1900, Mining Accident

OVERCOME BY POWDER GAS

Jack Kenney Expires From Its Effect.

PUT IN A BLAST OF SIX HOLES, BUT TWO FAILED

After a Reasonable Delay, They Went Into the Tunnel to Reload the Holes That Hissed.

A sad affair - occurred at Jackson Butte mine, owned by R. L. Marsh, last Sunday afternoon, resulting in the death of one man and the close call of another. It appears that Jack Kenney and W. T A. Kennedy, mining partners, put in "a blast of six holes in the tunnel, only four of which exploded, two of them turning out to bo what is known in mining parlance as "stinkors.." After a . time Kennedy went in and - reconnoitered and found i£ the powder, smoke too thick for safety.' He came out of the tunnel and waited for a short time and then made a second attempt but failed. Later, he went in and fanned the smoke out and he and Kenney then concluded it was safe to clean out the two holes and reload them. They went in together, and while Kennedy fanned the smoke away with an old coat Kenney cleaned out the holes. When the holes were cleaned, both set to work to load them, but before the job was finished Kennedy was overcome by the powder smoke and Kenney after trying in vain to get him out alone, rushed out for help and he was shortly after rescued.

While Mr. J and Mrs. Marsh- and others, including Kenney, were engaged in resuscitating Kennedy, his partner, Kenney, suddenly complained of feeling faint and took a small swallow of camphor. He died almost immediately after doing so.

On Monday, March 26th, Coroner Gritton held an Inquest on the body, the jury finding that the deceased was named Jack Kenney; was a native of Illinois, aged about 43 years; that he came to his death on the 25th day of March, 1900, by inhaling^ poisonous gases from burnt nitro-glicerine powder while at his work in the Jackson Butte mine. The-jury was composed of the following citizens: John T. Kelley, Harry Ashe, P. L. Cassineli, Thomas W. Bosanko, J. S. Avise, N. Ferari, J. E. Ruffner.

The Deceased had relatives In Stockton, among them a mother and sister, and -his remains were sent there Tuesday for burial, Undertaker W. E. Kent preparing the ( remains for shipment.

Amador Ledger, Volume 1900, Number 30, 30 March 1900

This was posted by my uncle before he died. This was a HUGE hint but I am still looking. I am looking for info about Thomas Kenney father to Helen G (Nellie)Born 1890, Thomas A born 1892, or John Patrick Kenney born 1894. The family names for Kenney have seemed to follow a pattern of Thomas John first born, John Thomas Second born in successive children.

Thomas the father was born either 1848 or 1854 in PA. His parents were born in Ireland. I have found them in the 1910 and 1920 census when Thomas was Widowed from who I think was Mary his wife and the mother of the children. ANY HELP is appreciated I am stuck!!!!

I am looking for any information on my Great-Grandfather Edward E. Kenney 1886-1935, born out east. I believe New Jersey. He is buried in Watertown, WI. Married Ida Gensmer and had two sons for sure, most likely three. Ralph Willard 1921-2000 and Howard L. Kenney Sr. 1922-living. The third is buried next to Edward E. Kenney and is named Edward A. Kenney. The headstone for both Edward's is marked "Father" for Edwrad E. and "Brother" for Edwrad A. b. December 1923 and d. January 1924. It is believed that Ralph or Howard purchused the headstone when they had gotten older. That is why it is marked father and brother and not husband and son. Any information on Edward E. Kenney, Ida Gensmer b.1898 d.1967, or Howard L. Kenney Sr. would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Hello Christi,

Just stirring the pot, so to speak. So far I have matched with a Canadian who's family comes from County Fermanagh and a gentleman from Scotland who profess Irish origins. There are about 13-14 different lines of Kenny/Kenney/Kinney/Keeney lines that are identifiable. For me, SNP testing indicates possible ancient Celtic origins.

I have antecedents that explored the Upper Ohio Valley (Pittsburgh to East Liverpool) as early as 1760 and at least one who came to Jefferson County circa 1805, so there is always a possibility of a connection.

Regards, Jim K.

There was a deal on My Heritage for 89 bucks so I jumped on it. Even though it was only the Y male side, it is the only side I'm researching at the moment.

There is a good chance I'm related to Peter James Kenney, the founder of the Clongowes college. I wish there was a way to verify it somehow. (DNA from him would be great but impossible) It matches up with our oral tradition and some of the timelines of his travel and my GGG Grandfather's travel. We had lost touch with our roots in Ireland because the last Kenney came to Canada who could have kids. The others were Catholic priests and I seem to remember something about an important one.

Anyway I'll be participating with you in the DNA testing and I have my roots traced back to a spot in Ireland but past that its all guesswork.

Catholic Priests

In my family, the story was told that my GGG Grandfather Thomas Kenney who came from Waterford Ireland to Ottawa was the last in the line to carry on the family name. It was told that he had 3 or even possibly 4 brothers but all were priests. So I know he was born around 1801, and could have had much older brothers. It isn't known if they came to Canada or the USA either. But has anyone heard of a story about a "Kenney" or possibly a "Kenny" as a catholic priest who came over around that time frame? OR remained in Ireland in the Waterford area?

The roman catholic area around Waterford was the Western side near Cork and Tipperary. So that is where I've tried to focus my search for his brothers.

PS - he made up for the brothers being unable to continue the branch of the family by having 11 kids!!

Re: Catholic Priests

I think I found one of them, I'm positive of it. He fits the time period perfectly and even was in the USA exactly at the same time his brother (my GGGGrandfather)left Canada to go to the USA for some unknown reason. It must have been to meet up with his brother. He was known to have several brothers in the Catholic church. Thomas was a die hard catholic who helped build 2 catholic churches and a devout catholic. So were his brothers supposedly.

It would be remarkable if this was one the missing cathoic priests we've been searching for. Father Peter James Kenney, the founder of Clongowes Wood College in Ireland. There was a book about this priest with the correct spelling of KENNEY. I managed to get a copy of which describes his roots as a bit of a mystery, but much of it lines up with our oral history of our family. I wish we could have had a sample of DNA of this priest to find out if we are indeed related. My family would have been the only people related to him left.

Mary Virginia Foley Kenney and Silas Oscar Kenney

Looking for any information on Mary Virginia Foley Kenney (b.1868) and Silas Oscar Kenney (b.1862), both born in Essex county New Jersey. They had 2 sons, Howard Williams (b1888-d1957) and Roland Iglehart (b1891-d1972). The sons changed their last names to Evans between 1910 and 1920 for unknown reasons. Any information would be appreciated. Laura

There's never a simiple answer !

The price is about the same with the key companies - sometimes there's a sale or whatever.

When you say "inserted" I'm not sure what you mean. If you mean putting the actual results (dys numbers) into a database I think the answer is no (to almost any genealogy program). If you mean can I compare my results to those of others who may have tested at different companies . . . . the answer is - sort of - but it's awkward.

I'd recommened FTDNA because right now they have the largest database. Ancestry.com's lab is good lab - but Ancestry's support after you test is really not good at all at this time. I set up a project at Ancestry too - but it is very awkward to work with.

FTDNA now has a relationship with MyHertige. So if you order thru' them you will be in the FTDNA database. But you may not be in our project (it's soooo confusing).

So, I suggest you order a test via our project and when you get your results, I can tell you what to do if you want to look at the others.

It's rude to post a join link here since Ancestry is also in this same business. So, send me an email and I'll give you the join link and answer your questions.

gkbopp@gmail.com

I assume from your statement that you know you need a male Kenney - with that surname - because of the way the Y-DNA is passed down.

Regards,
Georgia
Georgia Kinney Bopp

I'm looking for Kenney's in Waterford as well in the early 1800's. So far I've found some Keny, and Kenny's listed at the Trinity Without church in the registers but not the people I'm looking for.

The handwriting is horrible so its been difficult.

Any Kenney's in Waterford in that time period were rare but they were all around the Mayor's walk area. Chances are we are related.

My story is that there was a few brothers but they were all Catholic priests and only one was left to carry on the family name "Thomas" who left for Canada and eventually had 12 kids and here I am. I have not been able to find the church he was baptised in or any of his relatives other than he had either a sister or cousin with him in Canada Bridget Kenney.

My Kenney line also resides in Southeastern Ohio. Although there are no data links, the two family line are in close proximity. DNA testing would open or close avenues of research.

Meanwhile, the link to your data pages does not seem to work, RootsWeb indicates an error.

Thomas Kenn(e)y and Bridget Carroll

They came to Canada before 1831 and they were Roman Catholics. Thomas was listed as unable to read and write and was a farmer. I also found his signature or someone signed for him on a petition in 1829 to get land for a church and cemetery.

I found their marriage record in Ottawa at Notre dame cathedral. After that there is a period of time that is untraceable.

Basically by 1846 he had been in the pipe to get some land and finally got some via Colonel Talbot down in Essex County Ontario. From there the rest of the family has been traced because most of the family has stayed in Essex County.

Thomas was listed on his death certificate as being born in "Waterford" Ireland. Bridget was born in "Tipperary" Ireland. It looks like they didn't live near each other and met in Ottawa.

My problem is tracing him back. I can't find the ship he came in on. He isn't listed on any of Robinson's ships, and I need to get access to the original microfiche to see if maybe there was some misspelling somewhere. There are "Kerny" family listed which hand written could look like "Kenny"

The clue is that he supposedly had a child Elinor who was born in the "USA" in 1836 according to the 1852 Canadian census. So between Ottawa in 1831 he must have left and went to the USA briefly and came back. Or cut through on his way to Essex. Possibly to visit one of his brothers who were priests.

The story was that he had 3 or 4 brothers but were all priests and he was the last one left to carry on the name. I also heard he had been through Pennsylvania. Unfortunately most of the people who had the information have passed on.

Using the standard Irish naming convention (which it looks like he abided by because of his sons in the correct order) his father would have been "Patrick Kenn(e)y" and would have lived in Ireland. Thomas's 4th son was named "Andrew" so that means his oldest brother who would have been a priest would have been the name of the catholic priest. I've been unable to find any catholic priests named Andrew Kenney in the USA or Ireland.

Thomas's mother would have been "Elinor" (As spelled on the census) most likely but I can't be sure because of the missing gap in time.

Bridget's father's name would have been John Carroll because of the 2nd Son's name.

They had these children in order. (the first women are hard to trace)

Elinor 1836-37, Patrick 1839, Bridget (aka helen?) 1840, Mary 1841, John 1844, Bridget 1846, Catherine 1848, Ann 1850, Thomas 1856, Edward 1857 (I think he died young), Edward 1859, Margaret 1861.

Thomas's wife was pumping out babies until she was 46!!

If anyone has any info on this family, please let me know!

Here is the info I posted on the other board. I know of 2 Patricks in our line and one of them could be Thomas's father.
Anna Maria Kenney (Case) (nee Nickerson)

I am hoping someone may know something. My 2nd great grandmother was Anna Maria Case. She was born in 1891 in Ontario, Canada. She first married James Harris Case and they went back and forth between Ontario, Canada and Michigan often. They show up in the 1920 Census as married. In one of their daughter's obituaries, It lists the father as James Harris Case and Mother as Anna Maria Kenney. I cannot figure out who she married and when. She did not outlive James Case and it is understood there was a divorce at some point. Does anyone know the Kenney that married Anna Maria Case (nee)Nickerson? Your help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Minnie Frances Westfall was my great grandmother's sister.

I always wondered what happened to Clinton after Minnie died. (I have a copy of his and Anna's obit)
Finding what happened to Richard would complete this branch of my Kenney research.

Thank you in advance for any info about Richard,
Anna
Hi Tim,
sorry took so long - the main part of my family settled in Jefferson Co., NY. It is Peter Dailey and his wife, Mary Kenney Dailey. But we know that Mary's brother, Patrick Kenney came over as well. We found the ship manifest that P & M came into Passamoquoddy, ME and went into NY probably by way of the St. Lawrence. We know that Peter & Patrick worked on the building of the Erie Canal.
The Bridget we are trying to find (amongst other family members), is the daughter of Peter & Mary, so she is a Dailey. Most all of the girls in that family went into service and we lost track of them. they are all in the Jeff. co. 1850 census, but by 1855, they are gone.
It can all be so confusing.....
Peter's 1st son born in the US was Dennis Dailey, who went overland to WI, joined a group of men (Wisconsin Gold Mine Co), then went on to Colorado in 1858 to become one of the historic pioneers. The 2nd son, James, is my ggrandfather.
Hope this helps....
thanks,
cat dailey

She is buried there at a local Catholic Church.
I know they had a son Martin as well.

What part of Wi was your Kenney family from?

Tim

KENNEY of Albemarle, VA

Looking to exchange information with anyone with KENNEY relatives in Albemarle, VA. I am particularly looking for "mulatto" persons, but who could at various times also be identified as "black." These KENNEYs are known to have been associated as former slaves with members of the Wingfield family, from about 1810-1812 up until 1865. Any assistance regarding white Kenney slave owners will be appreciated.
