I have found the Paper for Guardianship from Charles Kennon for Richard Ewing Kennon and his sister Julia (minors) in Harris County, Ga. That was in 1847. In that county I have found information about Charles Kennon and Charles L. Kennon (who could be charles' father ???) Either they are father and son - or they may be the same person.
When Richard was 12 years old, he lived with Mary Kennon (in the 1850 census) I don't know Mary's maiden name.
Mary died in Ft. Gaines, Ga. I don't know where she is buried.

Photo Assessment

Assuming the double photo is of Meriwether and Frances (Fretwell) it would have had to have been processed in or before August of 1854 (when Meriwether passed away). Without the original photo in hand, and otherwise limited information available, a professional assessment has been made by David Cycleback, a forensic scientist (cycleback.com). Here is David's brief reply to my inquiries:

"With the 1850s date, they definitely resemble salt prints, or salted paper prints. They often had a brownish red tint and could have fading. This was the first paper photograph process and is historically significant."

Here is David's assessment of the single photos:

"Okay, I have everything. The double photo definitely is more clear and detailed.

My guess is the two single cabinet card photos were made circa the 1880s to 1890s-- I assume this is later than the image subjects? The lesser image quality is likely a combination of them being made later and the images deteriorating with age. Photos from then can lose image quality. But the cabinet photos do look vintage-- not modern creations.

Even in the old days, people would want copies of family photos just as we do today.

As noted, the two single photos are cabinet cards, which was a popular style of photo at the time."

In Summary, the two individual photos are from a later time, likely duplicated from the original double photo. Some details to note as differences between the double and single photos:

The details in the single photos are not as clear (a common after-affect of reproducing photos)
The single photos show less of the subject
The photographic process used to produce the single photos (Cabinet Photos) dates several years later than the double (salted paper).

Cool stuff! I've seen Kennon's in that area while doing my research, but haven't made a connection yet. I suspect that your branch may have come from the group that initially went to North Carolina from Virginia, then branched out from there, that's just an initial guess. There's more to come!

Dave

The Mystery of Merriwether's Name Solved

After making a trip to Georgia and searching through court documents and records, I have verified that Merriwether's middle initial was an "L" vice a "Z". I surmise that whoever arranged for his wife's headstone to be fashioned was ignorant (not stupid, just uneducated to a point) as to how cursive letters were written, formally. A cursive capital 'L' in the early 1800's looks very similar to what one might think a "Z" would look like, except that a cursive "Z" looks very different than a printed version. Proof of Merriwether's middle initial can be found in his father's will (located in Lincoln Co, TN), the marriage license located in Newton Co, and other various court documents and records in Newton Co.

UPDATE! Death of William Kennon, son of Richard and Celia Ragland Kennon

After doing some more research based on documents acquired from Lincoln County TN archives, it appears that William survived well past 1839. My original assumption when including his death was based on the year of the will, however that was premature. He married Nancy Pack in 1841, and the following year she filed for divorce (more on that to come). Also, there is a record of William deeding land to some of his children listed in the 1839 will, as well as a listing of his name on the 1850 federal slave census for the area in Lincoln County, with one male and one female slave each. I'm confident this is the same William due to the age and location (70 years in 1850). I haven't been able to find a listing on the regular 1850 census for this area, but it may not be available at this time.

Where did the name 'Zeniford' come from?

I'm working on identifying the true name of Meriwether Kennon, husband of Frances Fretwell. The best resource for family names is the 1850 federal census taken while Meriwether lived in Newton County GA.

At question is whether or not Zeniford was part of his name. Although Zeniford may be found attached to several individuals in the 1800's, none appear to be associated with the Kennon name when researching historical documents.

I have come across references to 'Zeniford' associated with Meriwether, however these are not historical documents, but collections of word-of-mouth information. One such reference lists this name as Zenifor Merriwheather, as the son of William Lewis Kennon, the son of Richard Kennon and Celia Ragland. However, according to historical documents, a copy of William's will of 1839, and available period census records, Meriwether's name as listed is "Meriwether L. Kennon" with no reference to Zenford. The 1850 census, although valuable for other family names, does not provide a helpful resolution to this question, except to list Meriwether's state of birth as Tennessee. Meriwether is not listed on any 1860 census record I have found to date, and 1870 is speculative at best. I hope to be able to resolve this question as well.

Further research into Kennon's in Tennessee reveals that William Kennon, son of Richard and Celia Ragland Kennon, husband of Amelia Glass and "Polly" (more than one wife), had at least three sons, Meriwether L, Ellsworth R, and Richard J (as listed in his 1839 will, a copy is on his profile in my family tree).

I have also come across some family trees that list Meriwether as having been born in South Carolina, but if that holds to be true, then it must be a different person. Although there are numerous "Kennons" to be found in SC, I suspect that many are originally Cannon vice Kennon (there are several variations of how the name was spelled or transcribed).

Any information that might help to clarify these issues would be greatly appreciated.

- Dave Kennon
Leonard David Kennon III, son of Leonard David Kennon Jr, son of Leonard David Kennon, son of Francis Vandereau Kennon, son of Leonard Fretwell Kennon, son of Meriwether Kennon.

Re: Richard Kennon (1650) Virginia

Hi, I live in Virginia, not far from where the colonial Kennon's settled in what is now Henrico and Charles City counties (Charles City encompassed a wide area back then and included Henrico). I'm working on identifying additional sources for where Richard came from and who his parents might have been. Up to this point I have encountered mostly speculation and some assumptions, which I am not satisfied with. One fact I am sure of though, Richard did travel several times to/from England for a variety of reasons, but I suspect the most significant reason was to build up land. From historical references, for every trip made from England to the new world, a person was granted 50 acres of land from crown. These early Kennons amassed a large amount of land, and were prominent in the local society as Burgesses, judges, or militia officers, sometimes more than one at a time.

The legacy of judicial and military service carried on for several generations, however much of the original land in Virginia was either sold or given or taken away by 1800.

My number one priority at the moment is to get to the bottom of an ancestor's name, and as soon as I'm able to resolve that (hopefully in the coming weeks) I intend to pursue the Richard Kennon question. I have come across some inaccuracies in older published works and will be identifying those when I complete my research into how they are inaccurate (one must always substantiate such claims). Part of the problem is the use of common names, such as Elizabeth.

Best regards,
Dave Kennon

I have been looking for the parents of Richard Kennon 1650-1696 in Virginia married to Elizabeth Worsham 1656–1743. I found a person that posted that his mother was Elizabeth Bolling daughter of Robert Bolling and Elizabeth Clarke but it just did not seem correct. There are other listings that are questionable. Does anyone have Richard Kennon's correct parents with a source?

KENNON Mary Jane Hideg 1921-2011
After the last several years of living with the devastasting effects of Alzheimer's Disease, our mother is finally at peace.

Mary Jane Hideg was born on March 5, 1921 to Louis & Julia (Moody) Hideg in Cudahey, Wisconsin. She attended grade school there, and often starred in the school talent shows, as she was quite an accomplished gymnast.

When the family moved to Newark, Ohio (Licking County) in 1936, Mary found that the difference in high school curriculum meant she would need to complete 2 years of work in just one year if she wanted to graduate as planned. She did just that, and with honors.

In 1940, as a young woman who loved to dance, Mary dreamed of meeting a tall, dark handsome man who also loved to dance. Enter tall, fair, handsome William H. Kennon Jr with his two left feet. Well I guess "2 out of 4 ain't bad" as they wed on May 3, 1941
They were married for nearly 63 years, separated only during the 5 years in which Bill served in the Army during World War II.

In addition to being a housewife and mother of five, Mary was a talented seamstress who loved to make outfits for herself, and her three daughters.
She was also a great cook, with pork roast being a specialty. How I wish I learned the secret to the best pork roast gravy ever, before it was forgotten!

In the mid-sixties, Mary went to work in the Health & Beauty Aid Dept. of Arro Dept. Store.
She enjoyed helping customers for nearly 30 years, retiring from Value City in her mid-seventies to take care of her husband, who had became confined to a wheelchair.
She cared for him at home until his death in February of 2004.
She missed him terribly, until Alzheimer's took away her memory of him, and she stopped grieving. That was the one small blessing of the disease.

Mary came to live at SharonBrooke in March of 2008. Her mind was failing but her body was strong and so she began to dance again, accompanied by the piano stylings of the late John Rechel. Though she needed a walker and oxygen, "The Dancing Lady of Sharon Brooke" enjoyed "cutting a rug" until August of 2009, when her body began to fail as well.

Mary Kennon, "The funniest grandmother of all time" as quoted by grandson Adam, passed away on May 5, 2011 at SharonBrooke Assisted Living.

She is survived by sons & daughter-in-law, Bill (Vivian) Kennon Sr., Tom Kennon of Virginia Beach, daughters & sons-in-law, Cheryl (Dave) Dodson Sr., Kay (Todd) O'Dell, and Cathy (Ronnie) Messina; grandchildren, Debbie (Bob) Jutzi, Bill (Cynthia) Kennon Jr. & family, Susan (Jamie) Caudill & family, Tom (Paula) Kennon Jr. & family, Tammy (Greg) Gant & family, Matthew Kennon, Misty (Michael) Queen & family, David (Jen) Dodson Jr. & family, Kelly (Jake) Gayheart & family, Adam, Kayleigh, Lindsay O'Dell, Jason Kennon & daughter, step-grandson, Chris Sitarski & family; also her brother, Don (Lois) Hideg; and several nieces & nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill; her sister, Betty Board Holdren; and daughter-in-law, Maureen Kennon.

Our eternal gratitude to Hospice of Central Ohio and the nurses, aides, and other staff members at SharonBrooke.

I am the GGGGG Grandson of Samuel Watt, who came to western Pennsylvania, or was born there in early the 1740's. He fought in the revolutionary militia from Washington, Pa. had a son name William Watt, who eventualy migrated to Cadiz, OH, where William's son, Samuel Watt,(became a Physician). Samuel had a son, Samuel Watt, Jr., from whom Leroy came, and then my father Robert Samuel.

I need to know if Samuel was born in Pennsylvania (cannot locate in any records) or migrated. If so, from where?

Thanks, if you have any info. I can be reached at bobbyw1938@gmail.com.

Bob Watt

Re: All The Kennon Families Out There

Hi, my name is Dave Kennon (Leonard David Kennon III), and am working on my family genealogy not only regarding that name, but all others. I have researched the link to Pocahantas, and from what I have been able to find, a Richard Kennon (b. 1690, third son of Richard Kennon) married Mary Agnes Bolling, daughter of Robert Bolling and Jane Rolfe (daughter of Thomas Rolfe, son of Pocahantas). If there's any other direct blood link, I haven't come across it yet.

I would love to share any information you have. One of the roadblocks to finding good information about my line of Kennons is where they lived during the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Unfortunately the region is located in areas where there was much in the way of pilaging by Union soliers, and one of the key courthouses was in fact mostly destroyed along with several historical documents and records (for a freezing soldier, old papers do well to keep one warm). Such is life.

Feel free to contact me, I'm looking forward to sharing.

Dave Kennon

It looks like Anna Walters to me. Living with Robert Kennon .
In 1910 & 1920 census She is listed as Carrie Walters (servant/ housekeeper) living with Robert Kennon listed with the children born before 1920 exception of 1 Leonard Walters. 1920 census Leonard is listed as grandson with Samuel and Susan McIntosh. So Samuel most be Carrie’s father. Susan and Samuel had no children that I can find. Samuel McIntosh death Cert. lists John Mcintosh and Lowery Tipton as Parents.
Thanks Denise Kennon Montgomery ladydee_abcd@yahoo.com
Looking for Jeremiah Kennon, b in NC perhaps in 1711

Hello all,

I've done a LOT of searching, and I can trace the Kennons of VA to about the 1770's when Wm. Kennon's b. 1713 & Eliza Lewis Kennon's sons, Rchd.b.~1745, Chas. b.~1750, Wm. b. 1745/6, and John b 1752 went to North Carolina.

I can also trace my own Kennon line fairly reliably back to John Kennon b 1765 VA & Nancy Taylor b.1770, Marr 1793. then things get weird, and seem to lead back to a Jeremiah Kennon b 1711 in NC.

So, there's definitely a disconnect here, but I just haven't been able to bridge the gap.

Does anyone have information on either end of these lines that might prove/disprove a connections?

Thanks, Dannie

Have you been able to determine that this is, in fact, the Richard Kennon born to Charles Lewis KENNON and Mary Howell LEWIS? If so, would you be kind enough to let me have his particulars and that of his mother Mary. I am stumped as to her death and where she died and is buried.
Tks

Katrina;

WOW! Let's chat...my number is 314-920-9391. Call me anytime. I talked to the daughter for a brief second, but nothing came of it. I did find and interview someone who remember going to the funeral place. Who is putting on the reunion? I would love to attend and meet you and distance cousins. I was also hoping to visit the courthouse and library and look through old records. I live in St Louis Mo, where do you reside?

Carl
This is Katrina.

I did actually find out a little more information. My grandfather died earlier this year and I found myself in Lousiana meeting a lot of the Kennon family. Jim's daughter owns the Kennon Mortuary now and is a Minden official. His last surviving son died I believe in May. I know that is a family reunion scheduled for next year.

Re: Lucille Myrtle Kennon East

I'm not sure if this will help with your search for Lucy or not, but I
can give you some information I have found on Asariah Kennon/Cannon. I
have the following on Asariah.

Asariah Kennon (Cannon) born 1830 in NC
Son of Thomas Kennon and Susanna Hooper
Married 25 Aug. 1853 in Rockingham Co., NC to Martha Jane Lovelace (b.
NC 1834)
Daughter of John Lovelace and Cloe Ann Lovelace
Asariah died between the 1880 and 13 November 1886. That is the date of
the marriage of his and Martha's daughter Rosa Ellen Kennon to James
Marion Kennon and it states that the father of Rosa is deceased.

In the 1860 census for Rockingham Co., NC we find:

Dwelling No. 83, Family No. :
CANNON, Assa [Alsey], age 25, Male, White, Laborer in Factory, born
NC, cannot read or write
, Martha , age 22, Female, White, born in NC,
cannot read or write
, Martha A., age 5, Female, White, born in NC
, William, age 4, Male, White, born in NC
, Eliza, age 3, Female, White, born in NC

You have already listed the 1870 census in your post so I won't repeat
that here.

In the 1880 Rockingham Co, NC census we have:

Township: Oregonville, Dwelling No. 257, Family No. 261:
CANNON, Asariah, White, Male, age (prior to June 1st) 50, Married
, Martha, White, Female, 40, Wife, Married
, Caroline, White, Female, 15, Daughter, Single
, Britin (*writing very hard to read), White, Female,
14, Daughter, SIngle
, Robert, White, Male, 13, Son, Single
, Mollie, White, Female, 12, Daughter, Single
, Rosa, White, Female, 8, Daughter, Single
, Narmirr (*writing very hard to read), White, Female,
6, Daughter, Single
, John, White, Male, 4, Son, Single

Now, if you look at the ages given for Asariah in all three census,
there is obviously something wrong. Either they didn't know how old
they were or the census taker wrote it wrong. Also, note the age
differences on the children listed, particularly between 1870 and 1880.
I do think they all three Asariahs are the same man. I have never found
an older Asariah, but I have found one younger one. I think the Asariah
that married Sallie Pickeral is the same man that married Martha Lovelace.

Anyway, I don't know that this will help you with Lucy, but maybe it
will be of some help sometime.
Take care and good luck.
Blessings,
~*~
Laura

PS: Asariah is my ggg-grandfather through his daughter Rosa. :-)
Lucille Myrtle Kennon East

I am trying to find information on Lucille Myrtle Kennon.
(Lucille Kennon East, Born June 6, 1866--Died Nov. 21, 1931 Loving mother) Lucy is buried in the Ruffin, NC Community Cemetery.

Lucy married Robert Clifton East sometime after the 1880 cencus (Robert is buried next to Lucy-- RC East, Born March 21, 1853--Died Nov. 21, 1932 Peaceful father)

In 1900 and 1910, Lucy and Robert can be found living in Pellam, Caswell Co, NC. I am unable to find Robert and Lucy in the 1920 census, but by 1930, they are living in Ruffin, Rockingham Co, NC.

All census show Lucy as being born in NC, however I have been unable to find her family.

In the 1870 Census, I can find a Lucinda Cannon who is living with her parents but I am not sure if this is the right Lucy.

Robert was born in Halifax Co, VA in 1853, by 1880, he is 25 and living with his mother and syblings in Rockingham Co, NC.
----------------------------------------------
(I received the following help from someone is Caswell Co NC.)

I see that your Robert East is living in Rockingham Co., NC, Oregonville, in the June 1880 census, along with his mother and siblings. Also in that census is Lucey Kennon, age 19, keeping house in the G.A. Miller household.

Dwelling 3, 1880 census, Rockingham Co., NC, p. 1, Oregonville, June 1, 1880:
G. A. Miller, 67, physician
Mattie S. Miller, 41, wife
Lena Miller, 11, daughter
Insogene G. Miller, 4, daughter.
A. Perkins Miller, male, 32, son, merchant
Mollie Miller, wife (of A. Perkins), 26
Lucy KENNON, 19, keeping house, b. NC (is this YOUR LUCY?)

So Lucy and your Robert East were in the same county and town in 1880.

I also see a birth record in Catawba County, NC, for Albert Holland East, born June 12, 1900, to Robert Clifton East and Lucille Myrtle Cannon.

So, checking the CANNON spelling, I find who I think might be your "Lucy Kennon."

1870 US Census, Rockingham Co., NC, Oregonville:
Euriah (?) Cannon, 45, works tobacco factory, b. NC
Martha Cannon, 34, keeping house, b. NC
Martha A. Cannon, 15, at home, b. NC
William Cannon, 13, works tobacco factory, b. NC
Sallie Cannon, 12, works tobacco factory, b. NC
Lucinda (is this LUCY?) Cannon, 11, works tobacco fac., b. NC
Caroline Cannon, 10, at home, b. NC
Robert Cannon, 9, b. NC
Mollie Cannon, 8, b. NC

(I received the following help from someone is Caswell Co NC.)
I think his name was actually Azariah Cannon(nicknamed Assey in the 1860 census). By the 1880 census for Rockingham Co., NC, Oregonville, p. 52, Asariah and Martha Cannon only have Caroline, Bertie, Robert, Mollie, Rosa, Nannie and John at home. Lucey Cannon is working out and keeping house for the Miller family in Rockingham, Oregonville. I wonder if one of Lucey's sisters married a Miller man?

If Lucey was age 19 in the June 1880 census, and her first child was born August 1881 (John R. East), then I'd guess she and Robert East probably married about 1881 in Rockingham County, NC.

There is an Azeriah Cannon married Sallie Peckeral on Dec 31, 1847, in Rockingham Co., NC, so this might be the father of Azariah Cannon who married Martha and had a daughter Lucinda (Lucy) Cannon. It will take more research.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, I am trying to see if there is anyone out there who has any information that can help in my research, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks
