Kensington Y-DNA Project

I have recently started a Y Chromosome DNA project covering the Kenchington/Kensington family and I am looking for MALE members of the family who are willing to submit DNA samples for the study. I have much of the family history mapped out, based on documentary information, but there are questions that still cannot be answered and genetics promise a route forward. This is cutting-edge research for genealogy and an exciting way to explore the deeper relationships among branches of the family.

Anyone who is interested, either in submitting samples or in discussing the possibilities of the genetic approach, can contact me at Gadus@istar.ca or else go direct to the projects web page at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Kenchington/default.aspx. (Please do not reply to me through Ancestry. The message will go to my wife, who is studying her own family, not mine!) If you go to the web page in the next few weeks, you will not see any data posted. They are on their way but the testing is not instantaneous. In the meanwhile, I do have some preliminary information on the early origins of the Kenchingtons, based on my own DNA data.

Please note:

1: Testing samples for DNA is not cheap and I do not have a budget to pay for anyone else's samples. I can only appeal for volunteers willing to contribute both their own DNA and the cost of its analysis.

2: Only males can contribute to this project directly -- for the simple reason that there is no Y Chromosome in females! Y DNA tracks the male line from father to son (which makes it invaluable for studies of people carrying the same surname) but is not passed to daughters. Female members of the family need to find a close male relative (brother, father, uncle etc.) who is willing to contribute a sample.

3: I recommend that anyone interested in volunteering their DNA order a test kit through the project website and NOT through Ancestry DNA. I paid for the Ancestry route and now, after reviewing the services offered by the full range of testing companies, I am paying again to be re-tested under the standards of Family Tree DNA. Please save your money and do not repeat my mistake.

Hope to hear from many willing volunteers!

Trevor Kenchington
