I have a Charles R. Kerns in my family. Born about 1854 in Georgia, married Matilda between 1880-1882, died in Texas Sept 1935. In fact, I just printed out his death certificate. Says he was born 12 Oct 1853, wife was Matilda Hammock (deceased) Woo Hoo!! He was born in Maryweather County, Georgia.

p.s. He's my 2x great-grandfather on my mom's dad's side.

Hello,

I am looking for anyone with information on the family line of PA/WV Kerns that are part of my history. Any information concerning older Kerns generations beyond what I have or possible living relatives would be greatly appreciated. I have been reading many of the archived posts and I see numerous Kerns lines originating in Holland, Germany, Scotland … I hope to one day know the homeland of my Kerns.

The following lays out my Kerns ancestry (as I have been able to determine):

Rebecca Jane Kerns is my 3rd great grandmother - lived her entire life in Marion, West Virginia
b: 1847
d 12 May 1914
m: 18 Sep 1866 to Joseph H Conaway
Rebecca is the daughter of Elijah Joseph Kerns (below) and Ann Shupp
Rebecca’s siblings include – Cyrena, Emerial, Gerald, Zeri, Emeline, Rachel A, Nancy, and Mary Ann

Elijah Joseph Kerns is my 4th great grandfather
b: 26 Jan 1814 in Greene Co, PA
d: 29 Jan 1898 in Marion Co, WV
m: 1832 to Ann Shupp in Greene Co, PA
Elijah is the son of John J Kerns and Rebecca South
Elijah’s siblings (all female) include – Rachel, Minerva, Nancy, Emily, Louisa, and Keziah

John J Kerns is my 5th great grandfather (I think)
b: 5 May 1782 in PA
d: 30 Nov 1867 in Marion, WV
m: Jan 1827 to Rebecca South in Monongalia, VA(WV)

Any information you have would be greatly appreciated ...thanks for your time.

Jim Hastings
Hillsboro, VA.
Charley's son passed away December 9th, 2006. He was my grandfather--Clinton George Kerns. He was the son of Charley and Dora. I believe Dora died 4 years after he was born. Charley and Dora had 2 other children--Nina and Wanita. Nina passed away in 2007 (August). Charley remarried to Lula Mae West. They had 3 children together--Donnie, Earnest and Darlene.

I'd love to hear what you all have found! I have actually reached out to Fran via email.

They moved from Ohio to Iowa and are buried in Madison County, Iowa.
Any information would be greatly appreciated, since no one can find Isaac's father or mother, but suspect they were from Pennsylvania and possibly from Ireland, but can find no proof.
Thank you for your help.

Hi Tiggerkenwood,

Most people will disagree with me on this but I will tell you the truth about why the last name was changed. It was changed from: Kerns, Kearns, Carnes, Kern, and more, due to the native blood line we have and the way some people act towards us. I hope we can compare what we both have. I had a lady tell me at one time that the Kerns\Kearns were from England. Our line was not and a heated tempers flew, as I know who I am. I have taken our family tree back to my 8th. Great Grandpa he was born in West Virginia before 1722. Real hard to find info on him, but was told he was full blood Shawnee. Great Great Grandma was 3\4 to full blood Native American. So if you fall into my tree line like I think you just might. I may be able to help you out. If your interrested in sharing what we have to see if it is the same line, Please email me at usdidohiya@yahoo.com instead of messages here. Hope to hear from you. Oh yes do you have pictures of your line so far? I have a few but not many, maybe we have the same persons name and picture to compare our family lines. Hope to hear from you.. Bonnie Kerns\Kearns
It is hard searching the Kearns line, due to the Native American Blood line and last name changes.
I know this post is over 10 years old, but I'm hoping that you get this message:
I am also looking for information on Madison and Mary Kerns. My wife's Great Grandfather was Carles C. Kerns (or Carls, Carl). On his birth records, it shows Madison and Mary as his parents (his name was written as Carlos C., born in Roane County, WV). According to this record, he was their 1st child and his mother Mary was 18 years old.
Then many years later, on his marriage records, his parents were shown as Preston and Mary Kerns.
I cannot find ANY of these people that match correctly.
My only guess is that Mary was born as Mary Kerns (with Preston and Fannie F. Kerns as her parents) and she raised Carles as a single mom and Preston (his grandfather) was a father figure. Mary Kerns would later marry a Seabolt.
Hopefully someone can help. You can reply here, or email me:
joshuabmail@gmail.com
Thanks!

My family has been searching for many years to find any relatives of my grandfather. James Earl Barton, born December 24, 1900 in the Seattle area. He is now deceased but here is what we have based on his memory:

Father - William Edward Harrison Barton: Born in Tennessee. Was stabbed Dec. 24 1904 and died 3 days later in Seattle, King County.

Mother - Rose Ann (Kerns, Kearns) Barton: Born about 1879 in Kentucky. After William's death, she possibly married J.J. Hamilton and died in Lake Charles Louisiana in 1909. Rose's mother's maiden name may have been Brickey. It is thought that her grandfather was James Brickey.

Siblings -
Merle or Burl Barton born October 8, 1896???,
Della Mae Barton born January 3, 1894 or 1898. May have died in Seattle WA in the early 1920's,
Twin Brother James Edward Barton born December 24, 1900. He died in his early 20's from an illness.

If anyone has similar names with additional information I would appreciate you posting it.

Thank you!
My Kerns connection is from Jacob kerns of Frederick County, VA/Hampshire County, WV, to George Kerns Sr. to George Kerns, Jr. to Lemuel Kerns of Iowa and Kansas to Leonard LeRoy kerns of Kansas and later of MO. Wilmer Kerns recently published a book named "Kerns Family Roots of Virginia" about the descendants of Jacob Kerns. Jacob was of German ancestry. I can put you in touch with Wilmer if you are related to this line and want to buy his book. He also published a previous book avout various families from this area of Virginia including Kerns.

My grandmother's maiden name was Anna Jean Kearns. My sister and I have been searching for information on her parents and her grandparents. My uncles, my father and my sister are all dark skinned. I am light skinned. My sister has been told all her life that she looks native american. She is a lawyer and she just had a native american client tell her that her features are native american. Also, my dentist told me I have shovel teeth, which can only be found in Asians or Native Americans. We have tried to get information on our grandmother from our father and our uncle and they seem very reluctant to give it. I believe my grandmother lived in Maple Creek Saskatchewan before she moved to Duluth, Minnesota. If you think we are related in some way, please contact me. Thanks.

It would be quicker and easier to make a connection if you will give information on your lineages (earliest-known ancestor) rather than me writing all that I have to find a connection. My book deals with six different Kerns roots in Virginia, some in much more detail. If you will write to my email address wkerns4@verizon.net, we can discuss more fully.

Info on Flora P or Irving B Kerns

My grandmother (Ridgley Virginia Kerns) was raised in foster homes and my mother never really knew much about the circumstances - it just wasn't discussed when she was growing up. My grandmother passed in the mid 90's and with some help from my mom I was able to find her mother's name as Flora P (my mom thinks might be Pearl) Kerns. I found records of her, 1892-1970, daughter of Robert Aljourn Kerns and Barbara Keesecker. The family history I can find shows these Kerns as living mostly in western Virginia and West Virginia and Maryland.

My grandmother was listed on a 1920 census living with her mother Flora and two brothers (Ervin E and Theodore Russell) with an older couple listed as cousins. My mother knew her Uncle Russell, but did not know her mom had another brother.

I believe the father was Irving Benar Kerns, a 3rd cousin to Flora. He lived 1891-1974 and was the son of Jacob Calhoun and Alice Dailey. My mother believes that my grandmother had some limited level of contact with her father, but my mom never met him.

I believe Flora Kerns later married a man named Arthur Eshelman and had a couple more children.

I'd really like to get some information about the circumstances of my grandmother's childhood if there is anybody out there that might know something. Information on what happened to her father Irving B. Kerns is also appreciated. I'd also like to track down my mother's other uncle (Erwin) or his family. Russell died some time ago. Thank you.

Hello, I have recently found out that the Kerns/Kearns/Carnes line I have posted on here is of the Shawnee line, was told Shawnee and Cherokee line but that was wrong as I could not find a thing on Cherokee rolls. I thought also it was of Cherokee line. but new facts prove the Cherokee Blood to be wrong, there may still be some Cherokee Blood line there but most of my Kerns line is of the Shawano/Shawnee. If any one has names I have posted in previous post, you can email me and I will see if I can be of help. Just thought I would add this incase your search proves to be like mine was. for almost 30 years I had search for the Cherokee blood line and now find my search was not of the Cherokee but Shawnee. maybe your is also. Sincerely, Bonnie Kearns wbkearns@yahoo.com

Hello everyone,
I have been searching my Kerns/Kearns line for some time now and have been told by many including Family that Our family line is of Cherokee and Shawnee blood line. This is how my line runs as far as father and grandfathers:

Willard Kerns/Kearns (Father)
Chancey Kearns
Wilson kerns
William S. Kerns
Benjamin F. Kerns
John W. Kerns
Henry Kerns
Benjamin Kerns
Hugh Kerns

Alot of my information have been passed down to me by family and distand cousins. Hope I have the last names spelled correctly as the name changed so many time after birth so I have been told to hide from others due to native blood line. I have many more names but these are just father and grandfathers back as far as I know right now. If any of these names are in any of your family lines please contact me. Despertly searching for percent of my blood line so I will know. My family line from places that I have found for some have been: Southern Ohio, Maryland. Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Any help you can offer is appreceated more then all of you will ever know. I need help in finding answers and not sure where else to turn. My email address is: wbkearns@yahoo.com if anyone can help me out. Thank You
Sincerely, Bonnie Kerns/Kearns

Woops! I forgot to attach my Fathers particulars:
Clifford Denton Kerns served in two wars in his lifetime. During World War II he served aboard the USS Wasp, and continued service aboard the USS Mt. McKinley during the Korean War.
Mr. Kerns was born in 1914 in Conway, Iowa to Walter and Bernice Kerns. He graduated from Creston High School in 1932, enlisted in the Navy the same year, and served until 1934.
Mr. Kerns married Hazel Swan in 1935 in Long Beach, and re-entered the Navy in 1940. In 1959 he ended his service with the ranking of Lt. Cmdr. and went to work for Lockheed aerospace, retiring 11 years later.
