Eric,

Thomas Kerrigan was the oldest son of Martin and Alice (Mcguire) Kerrigan. Margaret was his sister and married John Mooney. I am not sure of the origin of Martin Kerrigan, but his grave stone and obituary show his birth 1828. I have Elizabeth Kerrigan marrying John Mooney, their son Martin Joseph money marrying Lillian Keeney. The had three sons: Dennis (1942-2011), Joseph (1934-1984)and Martin (1932-1979). Dennis has a son Eric (you? If so, we are 3rd cousins. I have a tree on ancestry to which I will send you an invitation (so you can see living folks).

Sincerely,

Tom Bautz

Delia's not the long form for Bridget, just a nickname. Supposedly Bridget is related to Bedelia, and Delia is short for Bedelia. Many of the Bridgets in my family tree went by Delia, especially if they came to America, where they apparently thought Bridget sounded too old-fashioned. Marys became Maes and Catherines Kittys. But we use nicknames today too.

Diane

Hello, my father passed away a few months ago and I am taking over his geneology stuff.

Looks like I "may" have a connection here. My father shows a Martin Kerrigan born "about" 1828 in Glennfinn Roscommon, Ireland.

It shows Martin had a daughter Margaret Kerrigan born in Thompson, N.Y. Margaret married Joseph J. Mooney and one of their children was Martin J. Mooney born 1893 in Monticello NY. My father's family is mostly from NY City but I know we had relatives in Massachusetts. He mentioned some aunts and uncles.

Anyway, let me know if you think there is something to go on here.

thanks

Thanks for the quick reply! I actually have did go onto the census sites, they are amazing, and I guess there is definitely a fit ( Anthony Gordon with Michael, Mary and Bridget on the first census, and then just Bridget on the last - about the right timing) - but do you know why Delia would be the long form for Bridget? My aunt, who was not really big on history, knows her mom (Della Beatrice) did not use her real name, but did not know what her name was in Ireland. It makes it particularily difficult to find people when they do not use their given names!
anyway , thanks again!

Look for the Gordon family in the 1901 and 1911 Irish census at nationalarchives.ie (I'd do it myself for you but my internet connection is running very slowly today). Anthony may appear as Tony, and Delia is a nickname for Bridget.

Diane

I am trying to find info about my fathers Mayo connections - His mother was called Della Gordon, but Della was not apparently her real name. Her mother, Maria Kerrigan, was married to Anthony Gordon, a stonemason, in Westport, about 1887? and had at least 2 other children (Michael and Mary) before dying in 1892? when my grandmother was born. I believe they lived near Westport, outside of Louisburg. And my grandmother came to Canada, sometime near 1915? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know when and where Owen was born, or how I got his name. Since he wasn't one of mine, I didn't save the paper trail. However, I did save James's entry in the 1897 death registry, which said he died in Edgewater, was 50 (or 56, hard to make out)years old, and born in Ireland.

Diane

Hello,
Hoping for info about Roger and Catherine KERRIGAN who lived in Bucksport at the time of the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Roger seems to have died by 1860 - he's not on the census, and I found a Hancock County Probate Index in which he is listed as dying in 1860. (Don't know what to do next with this info, though)
They had several children, including Roger, Dennis, and Mary (Can't find my copy of the census at the moment, but there were several more. I've also done research on Dennis and found out that he was from Westport, County Mayo, Ireland and was married to Mary McCoy in the late 1860s. He would have likely gotten married in Ontario since he lived in Plympton, Ontario at that time.

His daughter's name was actually Sarah (Sadie) and she died in 1960.

Hi Stephen. You and I have had conversations in the past. I have periodically checked your posts. I have done very little research on the Ireland side.... primarily I have spent the last 10 years finding all the descendants of my great great grandparents, Jame Kerrigan and Hanorah Gillespie, from Bundoran, Ballyshannon area and I am nearly done, 175 pages later in a Word document. There was a Hugh Kerrigan in Pennsylvania and Iowa in the late 1800's. I e-mailed a Joe Loughlin near Beleeck,Co Fermanagh and he said that a Hugh Kerrigan who lived in Pennsylvania had commissioned a head stone to be erected in a cemetery near Beleek, for some of his Kerrigan family.....and these Kerrigans were related to Joe. I still suspect yours and my Kerrigan families are related

I’ll post this email on the message board also just in case it jogs other people’s memories.
I just met a whole crowd of Kerrigan cousins for the first time at Heathrow Airport in London, and they are heading over to Dublin today to meet my Dad and some other cousins, and possibly pay a visit to their various ancestral towns and villages.
In particular, they want to visit the house in Dublin where their grandfather was born – his name was Hugh Kerrigan! ... the namesake of your grandfather and great grandfather.
I attach a family chart with some info that may be helpful. Maybe there is a connection. Their lineage is Hugh Aloysius Kerrigan b1896 Dublin, James Patrick Kerrigan b1855 Carrick Drummond, Co.Leitrim, and then a Patrick or James Kerrigan born about 1820 in Leitrim – is this the James who was a witness to your Hugh’s marriage to Anne? He would have been about 50 at the time. He had another son, Edward.
Here is the link to my Ancestry tree ... http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/22375741/person/1224670412
They married into the Shanley family.
Looking forward to hearing of any possible connection.
Regards
Maurice
Re: Update on Previous Posting for Hugh KERRIGAN, Bundoran

First, for those of us working on KERRIGAN and related surnames in the Kinlough--Bundoran--Ballyshannon region of Northern Leitrim and Southern Donegal: recently, I came across something interesting about the geographical area. The Ballyshannon Poor Law Union (est. 1840) included Bundoran and Kinlough in its administrative territory. This is a clue to understanding our ancestors moving back and forth between Leitrim, Donegal (and Fermanagh) if we realize that to the farmers living in the townlands, the County divisions were not "Borders" and even the administrative and economic units like the Parish of Innishmacsaint and particularly the Ballyshannon PLU encompassed groups of townlands in more than one County. They would have seen each other at market fairs. They went back and forth for work; over the years, several of my family worked at Belleek (Fermanagh) just a few kilometers from their townlands in Donegal.

I'm descended from the KERRIGAN Family of Dunmuckrum and the KEENAGHAN family of Rathmore, two adjacent townlands that are North of Kinlough, East of Bundoran and South of Ballyshannon. In particular, my great grandfather is Daniel Kerrigan (b.1846 Leitrim - d. 1906 Donegal), son of Hugh Kerrigan and ?? (Anne CLANCY ??) of Leitrim (likely Kinlough area, according to oral history). Daniel comes up to Dunmuckrum, acquires a farm and in 1878 at The Rock in Ballyshannon he marries Margaret Keenaghan (b. abt. 1853 Rathmore - d. 1923 Dunmuckrum)dau. James KEENAGHAN and Julia GALLAGHER. In this KERRIGAN branch, the given names repeatedly used are Hugh, Daniel and John. In fact, my great grandfather had a brother John (b. 1842 Leitrim - d. 1911 Dunmuckrum) who is listed as a separate farm householder in Dunmuckrum (censuses of 1901, 1911).

Of the children of Daniel Kerrigan and Margaret Keenaghan, Bridget (probably died young) and Daniel remained in Dunmuckrum where the family farm continued with him until his death in the 1950s. The other children Hugh, John, Mary and Anne emigrated to the Boston, Massachusetts area around 1900-1905.

For the person named "Reil50" above, we seem to have a connection by coincidence, if not marriage. John J. KERRIGAN (1881-1937), son of Daniel Kerrigan and Margaret Keenaghan lived most of his life in Belmont, MA. In fact, in our family that group were called the "Belmont Kerrigans". John J. married Margaret DOHERTY (b. Ireland abt. 1880) in MA in 1916 and had several children. He arrived in Boston in late 1902 and by 1907 he is living in Belmont and working as a chauffer for a private family. Your John Kerrigan (m. Catherine occupation watchman lived on Beech St.) and my John J.Kerrigan (m. Margaret occupation chauffer lived on Concord Ave.) both appear continuously through the Belmont records for many years. I had no idea that your John came from the same area of Donegal and had the same Leitrim/Donegal antecedents. I do know that there were some Keenaghan aunts (sisters of Margaret Keenaghan Kerrigan) who helped the girls get established with jobs as servants and cooks when they arrived. It's certainly possible that there could have been Kerrigan relatives in Belmont that got your John and mine started with jobs up there; that would explain John J. leaving his brother and sisters in Boston to take work in Belmont.

For anyone trying to contact me, in addition to Ancestry.com, I also have a permanent email address at tlkngstk@yahoo.com.

Cameron Chandler

Hello, I have been researching the Kerrigans of Woburn and have most of what you are looking for, I think. I do have some important updated info you may be interested in learning. I discovered Daniel Kerrigan and Mary Maguire's marriage record in Boston. It's Boston Marriage records Vol. 228, page 80, number 1435 in case you wish to obtain a copy. The name is spelled with a "C" instead of a "K" but it's the right person. Daniel was 30, a laborer, residing in Woburn. Mary was 22 and residing in Boston. They were married 12 May 1870 by Rev. James Fitton. This is the interesting part, Daniel's mother was not Catherine, but a Bridget, according to his info supplied when married. Mary's info is still Patrick and Bridget.
Daniel and Mary had seven children it seems:
Michael J., born 11 Feb 1871, died 30 Aug 1930 Lynn,MA
married Ellen E. Hennigan 2 Oct 1899. had issue: Charles b. 1903
John Kerrigan, born Feb 1873, died 3 April 1873
Patrick Francis Kerrigan, born 10 May 1874
married Margaret Gorman, you know your line..
Philip Lawrence Kerrigan, born 5 Jan 1876
unmarried in 1930 census aged 53
Daniel Henry Kerrigan (ancestor of Nancy Kerrigan Olympic skater), born 2 March 1879
married Betha Morton of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia 2 May 1898
Charles William Kerrigan, born 7 Sept 1881
married Ellen Veronica McHugh 8 June 1904
Margaret Mary (May) Kerrigan, born 15 April 1885
married Samuel Arbuthnot 28 July 1905

I have been working on your Patrick mostly, as my high school friend, is descended from Patrick's son Frank.
Can you tell me about Daniel's arrival? Might Catherne O'Hara be a second wife of Michael? Is there a connection between Michael (Daniel's father) and Cornelius Kerrigan who married Catherine Sullivan in September 1866, he seems to be the first of the Kerrigans in Woburn's records, so I am ssuming he was the family connection that brought Daniel and others to the city. They seemed to be all tanners, mostly curriers. There were quite a few firemen and fire chiefs I understand? Can youi tell me anything about the early history of the family in Woburn? Any idea where in Ireland they come from? Someone named Cavan Co, but I also think they were from Donegal. I found an intriqing piece of info in the Griffith Valuations..Kerrigans, Maguires and Devaneys were all tennants of a Thomas Connolly in three parishes in Donegal, it might be the family.
Another very interesting notation about the first son, Michael J. His marriage record says he was born in New York City...everyone was born and married in Woburn except Daniel and Michael, so I think that maybe the family came to NYC first and then went to Boston. Or maybe Michael was looking for work with family that had relocated in NYC. That's another mystery.
That's what I have so far, and I hope that it helps you! Anything you might know would be very helpful on the Gormans and Kerrigans origins and families too. I greatly appreciate your help.
Hope your family has a great 4th!
Richard Robertson

I am searching for the parents of George Laurence "Lucky" Kerrigan, who was my mom's step-father. She said that he was Italian and from New York. Based on his discharge papers from the U S Navy (WWII), he was born 18 AUG 1926 in Oceanside, Nassau, New York. He died 26 FEB 1975 in Slidell, St Tammany, Louisiana.

Lucky was my grandmother's second husband. I know that he was married at least once before, to a Christine D Daniels, in May of 1959 in Taylor, Florida. They divorced in October of 1962. He turned around and married my grandmother, Johnnie Dell Lynn Callahan, in November 1962 in Taylor, Florida.

My mom said that she thinks he was married before and had a couple of kids. I would like to at least find out who his parents are, along with any siblings and the possible family he had before marrying my grandmother.

Also, sometime in the late 60s, my grandmother and Lucky changed their last name to Kiernan to avoid debt collectors.

KERRIGANs from Clare-Galway Area

I'm looking for any descendants of Stephen Kerrigan, who lived near Gort on the Clare-Galway border, probably born around 1800. Know of two children--Fergus born about 1830 and Michael about 1835, but suspect there were more who emigrated.

Diane

Pat, do you know where in Ireland your Kerrigans came from and what Stephen's father's name was? I have a Stephen Kerrigan from near Gort in Galway, probably born around 1800, possibly a greatuncle?

Diane
