Key / Keys Family info FOUND

Ok, so .... I am in Henry County Tennessee. My grandfather had purchased a book before he had died and kept this book in his library. He was known to travel many states surrounding TN. When he died, I kept the book because it is subtitled "A Summary View of the Causes which led to the American Revolution" ... however, inside this book are handwritten Key Family notes typically found in a Bible. I am no appraiser, but to me this book is PRICELESS. It appears to be written when John Quincy Adams was president and DEFINITELY BEFORE copyright dates. The notes say (as shown):

(front) DAVID KEYS BOOK rote by Alfred Key 15th october 1834. ------------- Alfred Keys Name and Age in the year of our lord 1841 bornd June the 14th 1815.

(back) Where this you see remember me the many mile from this I be. Alfred Key
Alfred Key was married the 24 day of November 1836.
David Key was born the 24th of October 1837
Nancy Key was born the 14th of May 1839
Wm Key was born July the 15th 1841
Margaret Bruce Chalmers Keys born 12 May 1902 Aberdeen St Machar, Aberdeenshire (cert. 168/ 02 0914) to William Albert Keys, Schoolmaster, and Margaret Bruce Scott Chalmers (married as "Daisy" 6 Jul 1899 Kingskettle, Kettle, Fife). William Albert, born 1871 Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, (oddly) is with his parents in 1901 and there is no sign of his bride. I could not immediately identify Margaret/Daisy, but the marriage record says she was born c.1877 to Alexander Chalmers (deceased) and Maggie Ann Scott.

I am also researching the Keyes (Keys) line. My GG Grandfather, Andrew Keyes, born 1842, came to the US and settled in Brunswick, New York in 1884. I found an index for a birth record on Roots Web for 1872 for one of his sons, Arthur, and it listed his location as Ederny, Ireland. Andrew was married to Mary Bell, her mother is Marjorie Bell. I don't have any information for Andrew's parents, but possibly we may have a connection. Any information would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Patricia Lynn

Re: KEYS IN LOUISIANA

Shirley,a great aunt of mine, Sarah Rollings (1892-1935), married a William Rolla Keys, born ca 1893 in Louisiana (according to a 1920 census report). I do not know if he spelled it Keys or Keyes. They had two sons, William Rolla Keys, Jr (born ca 1914) and Edward Howell Keys (b ca 1917). I know that the family lived in New Orleans in the late 1920s and were living in Baton Rouge at the time of my aunt's death. I have not been able to find out what became of the boys after their mother's death. Your mention of a Keyes/Howell reunion made me wonder if these cousins are connected to your family. Do these names mean anything to you? I look forward to your response. Thank you.

Paul Nichols

Sydner I. Keys of Prince William Co VA - death by drowning 1914

Note: In the census, his name looks like Sydney J. Keys.
The Washington Herald
Washington, District of Columbia
31 July 1914
ONE DIVES, ANOTHER FALLS TO HIS DEATH
Sydner I. Keys Drowns in Potomac and J. William Bartlett Dies of Fractured Skull.
Alexandria, Va., July 30. – Sydner I. Keys, twenty-four years old, of Quantico, Va., was drowned in the Potomac off Wellington, four miles south of Alexandria, at 3 o'clock this afternoon when he dived overboard to recover a small boat which had drifted from a schooner loaded with lumber, of which he and his father were in charge.
Keys, when he dived, became entangled in the grass at the bottom of the river and never had a chance, despite the fact that he was an excellent swimmer. His father, Capt. Charles M. Keys, witnessed the drowning, but was powerless to give aid.
John M. Reed, who is spending the summer at Wellington, together with his brother, James Reed, set out in a small rowboat and in about an hour and a half succeeded in recovering the body. It was found in the grass near the point where Keys dived.
Magistrate Arthur Kerby gave a certificate of accidental drowning.
The body was removed to Wheatley's undertaking establishment. It will be sent tomorrow to his father's home at Quantico for burial.
Capt. Keys and his son left Quantico early this morning in a boat loaded with lumber for Washington, to which post they were bound at the time of the drowning. Young Keys was unmarried.
[I did not copy the part of the article about the other death.]

The Washington Post
1 August 1914 (page 11A)
Drowned Man's Body Shipped Home.
The body of Sydner I. Keys, who was drowned in the Potomac, about 4 miles south of this city, Thursday afternoon, when he leaped overboard in an attempt to recover a tender that had gone adrift, was yesterday shipped to Quantico, Va., for burial.
I have the obit for James Harvey Keys, son of Samuel and Mary Champ Keys. Would love to share with someone tracing the Keys family. For some reason this was in my grandfather's papers. James H. Keys was born 1833 and died 1899. The obit is from Williamsport, Indiana paper. My grandfather was in that area at that time. It is too long to copy, but I will be happy to snail mail a copy. It gives info on his 2 wifes and his children. He was a very wealthy man according to the article.
smgrah1@charter.net

Hi I don't know if you are still researching your family tree. My great aunt was Annie Haskell nee Rickman. She was born in 1885 in Bashley England. She was widowed in 1912 and emigrated to Canada on 30th May 1913 with her 10 month son Harold. I have photo of Annie outside a white clapboard house with 3 children circa 1915. I know Herman came to England to see my family. I have recently found that Annie may have married for a third time a Frank Knight and died in 1979 in Victoria British Columbia. Hope this is of help.

I believe we are connected through the Keys family of Richland Center, Wisconsin. My father was born there. His grandfather was Squire Keys, who may have been a brother to your James Keys. I will check to see what other information I can find for you. We have several geneologists in the family!
