Nabby, Charles and Hugh Kilday in Newark, NJ in 1860?

Hello.
In the 1860 census in Newark, NJ I think I've found my relatives Bridget and Mary Flanagan (mother and daughter) living with a family listed as "Killdale". All are born in Ireland.

I am wondering if the name wasn't really maybe Kilday or Kildea. Is anyone familiar with this family living in Newark in the 1860's?

Nabby, born ca. 1799
Charles, born ca. 1830 (found a later Newark Charles Kilday listing)
Hugh, born ca. 1822 (found a later neark Hugh Kildea listing)

I have found a passenger list that has the following group arriving in New York in 1849 from Liverpool:
KILDEL, Nabby - 50 (listed as a male laborer ?)
Brien - 21
John - 20
Hugh - 16

My interest in this family is to see if they are related to Mary Flannagan and hopefully find a maiden name and an Irish birthplace for her and Bridget.

Thanks!

My Kildays originate in Ireland and then were very early settlers in Hayfield Township, Crawford County, PA. I have no McFarlands in my records but I am happy to share what I have and perhaps you can find a connection.

Farmer in Hayfield Twp.--1880 census
Served in the Civil War (War of the Rebelion). Enlisted in Company H, 169th PA Volunteer Infantry 18 October 1862. Served nine (9) months and was honorably discharged.

James A. Kilday, farmer, P.O. Meadville, was vorn in Hayfield Township, this county, Dec. 6, 1834, son of Daniel and Sarah (Zarley) Kilday. His paternal grandparents were Daniel, Sr. and Martha (Eury) Kilday, early settlers of Hayfield Township, this county. Daniel Sr. was a native of Ireland and settled on the farm now owned by our subject. She was a school teacher and taught English and German. Sarah, the wife of Daniel Jr. was a daughter of Jacob and Mary (Evans) Zarley, early settlers of Hayfield Township, this county. Daniel Sr. had three children: Thomas, Robert, and Daniel Jr., all now dead. The children of Daniel Jr. were James A., Mary, Martha, Eliza (Mrs. Freeman Ford), Jane (Mrs. Thomas Ralh), and Lavina (Mrs. Ebenezer Clark). Our subject has been married twice. His first wife was Sarah A., daughter of Joseph and Eliza (Mason) Dickson, to whom he was married in 1858. By this union there were three children: Eliza, Wanda (Mrs. Howard Dowdell), and James A.. Our subject's present wife is Viola, daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Jones) Johnson, of Meadville to whom he was married on March 20, 1874. The issue of this union is three children: Maude M., Oscar, and Laura. Mr. Kilday served in the late War of the Rebellion. He enlisted in Company H, One Hundred & Sixty-ninth Penna. Volunteer Infantry, October 1862: served nine months, when he was honorably discharged. He has filled various offices in his township. In politics he is a Republican.

Source: History of Crawford County, PA by R.C. Brown, pg. 879

Hi, saw this post on the Kilday civil war letters noted some time back. I missed by a few days. That said my Kildays were from Pennsylvania Philadelphia. My great grandfather Thomas Kilday was in the 110th PA Infantry. He had a son James but I have seen this James A Kilday and have wondered about the potential connection. There was a James Kilday married to a Margaret McFarland in PA . I would be happy to share information with you to see what connection there may be here. Have been researching this family for many years..maybe we can see what connections would help you or I with researching this family.

Alas, I read the post too late. This is indeed my family and I would be most interested to know the name of the purchaser of these letters. I contacted the seller but he could not remember the name and had no interest in going back in his records to help me out. (Some people just do not understand the driving passion of genealogy). If anyone knows who presently owns these letters, I would appreciate being put in contact. I have not the funds or desire to own them myself, but would love to have access to any genealogical information they might contain.

The Martin I am related to was born in 1868 in Green County Wisconsin. His mother was Gertrude Gramm 1875 to 1954 and his father was James Kilday 1865-1955. Grandparents were John Kilday born in Ireland in 1829 no idea where and Katherine Scott born in Ireland no idea when or where. That is as far back as I have been able to find - no information at all from Ireland. I was in Dublin a few years ago but didn't have the information I have now and was unable to find anything. I don't see any Bridgets in the family.

I have a photo of James Sr, Arthur, James Jr and Martin Kilday. The mother was Gertrude Gramm. I am on my way out of town for a week but will try and scan the photo in the Kilday Family Tree when I return. Where are you from and how are you related to Arthur? Thanks,

Dee Kilday Ward

Hello, Michael - I don't recognize any of the names in your posting, but...my mother, Agnes Kilday, daughter of Robert Kilday (born 1878) and Sarah Paterson Kilday, told us that the family visited briefly with a Kilday cousin after landing in Boston in 1923 when the family emigrated from Dysart, Scotland. They (my grandmother and the children) then traveled to Pennsylvania where they settled. Might there be a connection between my Kildays and yours?
Nancy

Patrick Kilday settled in Sabinal Texas and married Mary Tallant in 1888. They later moved to San Atonio . Familysearch records it as P. Kilday and Mary Tallant married on May 23 1888. They had about nine children. Patrick's brother John settled in Boston (my ggrandfather) John Kilday married Catharine Otis. Would love to find thier marriage document. All I know is that they were married in Boston.

Hi,
I think your grandfather, Leo Kilday, might have been my great grandmother's brother. Her name was Catherine and she lived in Milford. I checked the 1900 Census and it lists Catherine, Annie, Margaret, James L. and Frances as brothers and sisters. Is it possible that your grandfather went by his middle name? It lists the DOB as 5/1892...does that sound right? If so, I might have some more information for you!

My gr.grandmother's sister was Sabina McManus, b.abt.1885 S.Roscommon, Cornafulla Athlone. and she Sabina married a Kieran J. Kilday, possible had 5 children together. Could this be the same? Not sure where she went, but most of Sabina's siblings (including my gr.grandmother) came to the Boston, MA area. I have info. on Sabina's family if they are one and the same. Thanks.

In reply to your request for information about Luzerne Hutchins Kilday:
I have been researching the Kilday family in Maine. Luzerne was married to Philip Kilday on May 23, 1925 in Portland ME..
She died on March 30, 1972 in Portland, ME, and was buried on April 3 in the Kilday plot (sec J, lot # 31) at Forest City Cemetery.
Philip predeceased her, his obituary (Portland Press Herald, November 11, 1967) makes no mention of children. I have accounted for all of the people buried in the family plot and none of them are children of Luzerne and Philip.
The Kilday ancestry includes women by the name of Maria, but I have not incountered the name since 1854.
I am in touch with Caroline Kilday she knows very little about the family history, but I will ask her if she knows about your Marie. There are Kilday's of this family living in Florida, I have not contacted them. I hope this helps you, Good luck.

Michael, I have been reading your postings. My ggrandfather Michael Kilday had many brothers and sisters. i believe his father's name was James Kilday or Patrick Kilday. He married Ellen (nee Ryan) who had first married Michael Martin. They lived in Foxboro MA and Boston, MA (Roxbury area- Suffolk Co.) The Kilday's were short statured people and loved horses. Michael worked in a livery stable, Then worked in an iron foundry in Fosboro and also drove a team of horses that pulled the streetcars for the budding Mass Transit Authority. My mother recalled him having thick iron grey hair and a vivid red moustache. He told her that was from his Irish & Viking heritage. Some of Michael Kilday's siblings were Leo, Patrick, Delia..that is all I can recall but I know there were a lot more. We may well be related. Some lived in Chicopee, MA.

Hi,

I believe that the Kildays came originally from County Roscommon, Ireland.

The name Kilday is derived from the old Irish name Macgilliedea which translates as Son (Mac) of the Servant (gillie) of God (Dea).

The name has several variations: Kilday, Gildea, Gilday, Guilday, so trying to trace ancestors can be very tricky. God luck with your search.
