Wow....and Hello Again!

Definitely keep me posted about Hope (I am going to send a message to my cousin right after this).

About the Browns--

If I had to guess, I am pretty sure that the black and white Browns are connected. Our family has roots/connections in Macon County and Sumter County as well--Macon County may be where we originated. My grandparents were born and raised in Schley County/Ellaville (my mother was born there as well, but she grew up in Columbus)--but our segment of the Brown family may have migrated to Schley County from Macon County sometime after the Civil War/Reconstruction.

As you know, it is much more difficult to trace the exact family tree for African-Americans. This is so great--finding out all of this information about Killebrews and Browns!

Keep me posted--I'll definitely keep in touch.

Hi!
Now I am very curious about Hope. I intent to go back to the farm to look for the other part of the headstone so perhaps we may have dates. Like I said earlier it appears to be the 1800's but the stone it broken in the date so it's hard to even begin to make out what it is. I know the stone appears to be made of white granite and has the imprint of a dove in the middle. It is very weathered so it does lead me to believe it was at the latest the 1800's..
About the Brown's.....my husbands family is a prominent family the originated in Dooly and Macon County. Most of their landholdings have been in those counties. We are the first to own land in Schley County to my knowledge. My husband's father was a large land owner and farmer and grew lots of peaches. He also owned a dry goods business. There are two families of Browns in Macon County(where we live). Our family is white the other family is black. As soon as I get a chance and the weather gets better, I will go back and look around some more for the other part of the headstone. I want to try to get to the courthouse also to see if there is any information about the cemetery we have been told is over there.... Keep in touch and I will too..

Good Morning! Thanks for the message.

If I had to guess, the headstone of "Hope Killebrew" is somehow connected and/or related to my fammily--considering that there are not many Killbrews and Schley County is pretty smail. I am thinking that Hope Killebrew is either the sister of my great-grandfather or the mother of my great-great grandfather (which would make her my great-great-great grandmother). I do not think Hope Killebrew is my great-great grandmother, since she and my great-great father would have been unable to marry (but maybe they somehow did anyway). I am going to see if one of cousins might have an idea about Hope. This is great information!

Another thing...you're last name is Brown and you own property in Schley County? Does your husband's family have deep roots in Schley County/Ellaville--or any of the other immediate counties?

The reason I am asking this is because I am also a Brown--my grandfather's family is from the "Greater Schley County/Ellaville" Area. The last name of this huge and expansive family: Brown. Tell me more.

Hi,
My husband and I own a large piece of property just south of Ellaville in Schley Co., Georgia.(right on Hwy 26) We have found a grave on the property that has a broken headstone. The name on the headstone is Hope Killebrew. The grave is made of brick and morter and has a granite headtone that is broken. We looked around and could not find the other part of the stone that would have the dates on it but the part we saw seems to have the imprint of the 1800's. The stone is broken just barely under the date which is of the death or birth, but we feel it definitely is the late 1800's. We have been told there is a cemetery on the property but we don't know where it is. This grave appears to be all alone and is near the border of our property. Any idea who this is, I assume this is a female.

I have both Killebrew and Taylor in my family tree and believe both were from that area. Would love to see if there are connections there somewhere. My grandmother Dove Killebrew told me she had "some Indian blood" but I've never been able to prove it. She met my grandfather, a Bruce, in Texas. My grandfather's mother was a Taylor and the Taylors and Bruces traveled from Tenn to Ark together in mid 1800's.

Rachel Killebrew b. 1780's

Rachel Killebrew is my 3rd great grandmother and I am trying to write her story. Because the Montgomery Co.,TN courthouse burned, I am having a hard time confirming her marriage date to George W. Neville. Dates that I have seen are 1802 and 1805, but no documentation. I believe that she was about 17 when married to George Neville and according to the writing of Mary Jane Barry Killebrew, a sister-in-law to Rachel, she married against her parents' wishes. The age although a clue is not definitive either because of the variance in birthdates that exist for her. I believe the date to be before 1795 and place to be in NC because according to the recollections of anothr prominent Killebrew, she was already born when the Killebrews came from NC to Mongomery Co. TN in the 1795-1796 time period. Because of the extensiveness of this family and their level of literacy, I am speculating that Bible records exist. If you know of such records or other documented evidence for the date of Rachel's birth or marriage to George W. Neville, I would love to know. Also, this Buckner and Mary Killebrew gave their other children middle names but I have not see none for Rachel. Does anyone have this piece of information? Thanks, Donna

Jeremy
I find a E.D. Killebru on the 1880 census of Holmes County, Ms.
E.D. Killebru age 25, N.C. age 25 wife, T. Rayford age 5 son, Ida ? age 3 daughter, Mary Elizabeth age 1 daughter.
On the 1900 census of Holmes county Mississippi listed in
the household of Raford and Timmie Killebrew is Nanie C. Killebrew June 1855 listed as his Mother. This census
says she was the mother of 8 children and that at the time
the census was taken 4 where still living.
After this I cant find no futher trace of Nanie.
Nanie I believe is Nancy C. Barrett.
Most records I find seem to indicate that E.D. Killebrew
wife was Mamie Coggins which I believe to be incorrect.
I would suggest that you get Raiford Killbrew death certificate in hopes that the informate listed his parents
names. I hope we can prove that these children are
Nancy Barrett Killebrew

Hello,
I read the quary on the message board. My Gradingtons are from Texas. My paternal grandm. was Jessie Gradington-Sanford. She was born in Elgin, Texas, Bastrop Co.,May 9, 1896. Her mother, Sally Ann Mathis, died in 1900. My Grandm.'s father was Elisha Gradington. I don't know if he was married to Sally. She told me that her father was Elisha and her step-brother was Patrick. I found Elisha in the Census of 1900,Elgin,Bastrop,Texas. His wife is Sarah. Patrick is listed as age 18and he's a son.
I found a Viola Gradington in Bastrop, Bastrop Co., Texas, in the 1930 census. She's listed as head-of-household, Negro, 64yrs, born abt. 1866, and is a midwife. There is a son-in-law, listed with her, named, Elisha 39yrs. Also Josephine, daughter,41yrs.,and son, Robert 16 yrs.
There are others, in different households, in Bastrop Co. My granm. only talked of her brother Pat and he lived in Austin, Tx. He was a veteran and died there. Her mother's mother raised her and her sister after she died. Her name was Emily Arnold. My grandm. passed Aug. 20, 1989.
If I can be of further assistance please let me know.
God's Blessings to you and yours, Rose

I could not find Rayford in my data because I had the name spelled "Raiford". The name Raiford/Rayford is found in at least two generations in your grandfather Rayford's family, Jeremy. He had an uncle named Thomas Raiford who was your grandfather Rayford's father's oldest brother. He also had a cousin Thomas Raiford Jr, son of his uncle, Thomas Raiford. Your great grandfather was Edwin or Edward "Eddie" DeLoach Killebrew. Your family line moved from VA to NC to TN to MS to TX.

Patricia Max
pam@lampinc.com

Can you find out his father's name? We might have to go back several generations from you to connect up to your family.

Patricia Max
